Chương 22: Alive Before Useful

Ren Akiyama's mother found him in a hallway that smelled like antiseptic, dust, and institutional restraint. Not the medical observation room. Not the triage area. Not the secured interview space where Nezu had asked questions too gently and Recovery Girl had threatened appointments with the calm brutality of a professional who had spent decades watching children confuse injury with achievement. A hallway. U. A. had many of them, even in its emergency facilities. Clean white walls. Reinforced glass.
Soft floor markings. Directional signs. Staff moving quickly without running because running made civilians panic. Students wrapped in blankets. Parents stopped at checkpoints. Teachers speaking in low voices. Security officers trying to look like the situation was contained. Ren sat on a bench outside the observation room because Recovery Girl had allowed him to wait there under supervision after declaring that if he attempted to walk anywhere unapproved, she would classify him as a mobile hazard.
His forearm was bandaged. His ribs were wrapped. His cheek was cleaned and taped. His shoulder ached beneath the uniform blazer, which had been cut open at one sleeve and would not survive repair without looking like evidence. His old burn scar lay hidden beneath layers of gauze, quieter now but still present in the way a closed eye was present. Shinso sat beside him, elbows on knees, staring at the floor. Neither had spoken for seven minutes. Ren knew because he had counted.
He had stopped counting at four minutes, then noticed he had continued anyway. That was unfortunate. Then the doors at the end of the hallway opened, and Hana Akiyama saw him. For one second, she did not move.
She took in the bandage on his face, the sling he had refused until Recovery Girl looked at him, the torn sleeve, the way he sat too carefully, the blood that had been cleaned but not erased from the edge of his collar, the emergency blanket folded beside him because he had insisted he was not cold and then shivered so visibly that a nurse put it there anyway. Her face broke. Not loudly. Not dramatically. It simply stopped pretending that fear could be arranged into adult shapes. Daichi was behind her.
He saw Ren half a second later and went very still. Ren stood. Bad decision. His ribs objected immediately, sharp and bright enough that his breath shortened. Shinso's hand shot out and caught his uninjured elbow before Ren could either complete the motion or fail it publicly.
"Idiot" Shinso muttered Ren did not answer. Hana crossed the hallway faster than any staff member could stop her. She reached him and stopped short of touching. That hurt worse than the ribs. Her hands hovered near his shoulders, his face, the sling, the bandaged arm, as if every possible point of contact might cause pain and every failure to touch him might become its own wound.
"Ren" There were too many things in the name. He opened his mouth. The first word that tried to come out was sorry. He remembered. Not first. Not now. You do not give us sorry before alive.
"I'm alive" he said Hana made a sound that was not language and pulled him carefully into her arms. The hug hurt. Of course it did. Everything hurt. Her arms around him hurt his shoulder, his ribs, his forearm when the bandage pressed against her sleeve. The pressure made his body tense, then shake, then fail to decide whether to pull away or hold on. He held on. Because pain was not always instruction to leave. Sometimes it was simply the cost of being touched after surviving.
Hana cried against his hair without trying to hide it. Daichi reached them slower. Not because he was calmer. Because he was carrying calm like something heavy and breakable. He placed one hand on the back of Ren's head and one on Hana's shoulder, enclosing them both without squeezing too hard. Ren felt his father's hand tremble. That was worse. Daichi whispered "You can breathe?"
"Yes""Painfully?"
"Yes""Good" Hana made a broken laugh into Ren's shoulder. Then she pulled back enough to look at him. Her eyes went over every bandage again.
"You said not critical""Correct""This is not critical?"
"No" Her face tightened. Daichi said "Hana""No" she said Ren went very still. Hana's hand touched his cheek near the tape, light enough that it barely counted as touch.
"This is not me saying you lied. This is me learning that U. A. and my son both use words that make mothers want to destroy furniture" Shinso made a quiet sound beside them. Daichi looked over then, noticing him properly for the first time. Ren turned slightly.
"This is Hitoshi Shinso. Class 1-C. He helped keep students alive" Shinso's shoulders rose, defensive before the compliment even finished. Hana looked at him. Her face was still wet.
"Thank you" Shinso blinked.
"I didn't" Hana interrupted softly "Thank you" He looked away. Daichi extended a hand. Shinso stared at it for one second too long, then shook it awkwardly.
"Daichi Akiyama""Hitoshi Shinso""Thank you for staying with him" Shinso glanced at Ren.
"He's terrible at evacuation" Daichi's mouth twitched.
"Yes" Ren said "That assessment has become repetitive" Daichi looked at him.
"Good. Repetition helps learning" Recovery Girl appeared at the end of the hallway like punishment given form.
"No standing reunion speeches" Everyone turned. She pointed her cane at Ren.
"You. Bench" Ren sat. Immediately. Hana noticed that and stared. Daichi noticed too. Recovery Girl nodded once.
"At least he can learn from fear" Ren said "Respect""Fear is fine" She approached, looking at Hana and Daichi.
"You are the parents?" Hana straightened.
"Yes. Hana Akiyama. This is my husband Daichi" Recovery Girl looked between them with an expression that seemed to classify genetic blame.
"Your son is alive, conscious, medically stable, and infuriating. He has a forearm laceration that has been cleaned, a shallow facial cut, rib trauma that may include a minor fracture or severe contusion, shoulder impact, exhaustion, and a concerning response involving an older burn scar. He received limited healing. Limited means limited.
He is not cleared for training, heroics, independent investigation, self-testing, running, climbing, fighting, lifting, dramatic pacing, or pretending that writing notes counts as rest" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi said "Understood" Recovery Girl continued "He will need follow-up with U. A. medical staff and his Quirk specialist. He will need food, fluids, sleep, and observation.
He will also need someone to stop him from converting today into a research project before his body has finished surviving it" Hana opened her eyes and looked at Ren. Ren looked down. Daichi said "We can do that""I hope so" Recovery Girl said "He is practiced" That landed. Ren heard it hit both parents. Hana's face tightened, not with surprise but with the pain of confirmation. Daichi's hand closed slowly at his side. Recovery Girl was not done.
"His body is doing something unusual. I am not diagnosing it in a hallway after a villain attack. But I will say this once where all three of you can hear it. If this is a Quirk, it is not a blessing that works by ignoring cost. It appears to involve cost. Respect that or it will teach you badly" The hallway seemed to narrow. Hana looked at Ren. Ren did not look up. Daichi asked "Can it hurt him?" Recovery Girl's expression softened in the way a blade softened when cleaned.
"Yes" Hana's breath caught. Recovery Girl continued "So can denial. So can secrecy. So can hero society telling children that useful pain is noble. That is why follow-up exists" Ren looked at her then. She met his eyes.
"Do you understand?" He wanted to say yes. He did not know if he did. So he said "Not fully" Recovery Girl nodded.
"Better" Shinso muttered "That's her favorite word" Recovery Girl turned.
"You are still here" Shinso straightened.
"Waiting for guardian contact""I know. Sit properly" He sat properly. Daichi looked at him again, something quiet moving behind his face. Ren stored that too. Not analysis. Not now. Maybe later. Maybe never. A staff member approached with a tablet and spoke to Recovery Girl. She listened, frowned, and turned back to the hallway.
"Parents may remain for ten minutes before students are moved to observation and formal discharge processing. Akiyama will not be discharged immediately. He will be observed at least through evening. Shinso, they reached your listed contact" The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. Shinso's face closed.
"Coming?"
"No. They authorized school-supervised transport later" The words were professional. The meaning was not. Hana's expression changed. Daichi's too. Shinso looked at the floor.
"Expected" No one said anything. Expected did not make it harmless. Recovery Girl's eyes sharpened at the adults around him, as if daring anyone to pity incorrectly. Kurose arrived before the silence could rot. She carried a folder, a phone, and the expression of a woman who had spent the last hour preventing institutional failure from turning into student abandonment.
"Shinso. You will remain under school supervision until transport is arranged. I will contact your placement again after the first formal report. You are not waiting alone" Shinso's head lifted.
"What?" Kurose looked irritated that he had made her repeat the obvious.
"You are not waiting alone" His mouth opened. Closed. He looked away.
"Fine""Good" Ren looked at Kurose. She looked back.
"Your parents have been briefed medically?"
"Partially" Hana said Recovery Girl said "Enough for now. Not enough for them to sleep" Kurose nodded.
"That matches today" Hana looked at Kurose with the focus of a mother trying to identify who had been protecting her son and who had placed him in danger.
"You are his teacher?"
"Yes. Mizuki Kurose. Homeroom. General Studies 1-C" Hana bowed.
"Thank you for bringing him back" Kurose did not accept the thanks easily. She bowed back.
"I did not bring him back alone" Hana's mouth trembled.
"No. But thank you anyway" Kurose's face shifted. Very slightly.
"You're welcome" Daichi looked at Ren.
"General Studies, huh?" Ren blinked. Daichi's eyes were wet now. He smiled badly.
"Seems eventful" Hana turned on him.
"Daichi""What? I am processing terror through bad humor" Ren felt something in his chest loosen, then hurt because loosening moved ribs. He made a sound. Small. Almost a laugh. Bad idea. Pain spiked. Recovery Girl pointed her cane immediately.
"No laughing" Ren held his ribs.
"That seems medically unreasonable""Your sense of humor can wait" Shinso whispered "Can it?" Ren gave him a look. Shinso's mouth twitched. For one minute, the hallway almost became survivable. Then a stretcher passed at the far end. Everyone saw it. Aizawa. The stretcher was moving faster now, surrounded by medical staff and one security officer. His face was partially covered, one arm immobilized, IV line running, blood still visible despite rapid treatment.
He was conscious enough to turn his head slightly when someone spoke near him. Ren stood halfway before Recovery Girl's cane touched his knee.
"Do not" He stopped. Hana's hand found his shoulder. Daichi's hand covered hers. Aizawa's stretcher disappeared through double doors. Shinso stared after him.
"He went down for them" Kurose said "For you too" Shinso looked at her. She did not soften.
"Class 1-C was in that building. Do not reduce yourself out of the equation because you dislike needing protection" Shinso's jaw tightened. Ren looked down. The statement applied too broadly. Kurose probably knew. A few minutes later, the first Hero Course students passed through the adjacent corridor under staff escort. They were not walking like winners. That mattered. The public would eventually hear that All Might had arrived. That villains had been repelled. That students survived. That U. A. remained strong.
That the Symbol of Peace was still there. But this hallway contained the part before editing. Uraraka walked with a blanket around her shoulders, cheeks pale under dust. Iida followed beside her, glasses slightly crooked, hands clenched as if he had not yet forgiven himself for leaving even though leaving had saved them. Tsuyu moved slowly, damp hair clinging to her face. Mineta was crying openly and appeared too exhausted to be embarrassed. Izuku came after them. He was limping. Not catastrophically. Enough.
One hand was bandaged. His face had small cuts. His uniform was damp and dirty. His eyes found Ren immediately and filled with the exact emotion Ren did not want. Guilt. Again. Ren looked away. Too late. Izuku stopped despite the staff member beside him.
"Ren" The staff member said "Midoriya, keep moving" Izuku looked between them. Ren's mother's hand tightened on his shoulder. Ren looked back.
"Continue medical processing" he said Izuku flinched. Not because it was harsh. Because it was not enough.
"I'm glad you're alive" Izuku said The hallway quieted around them in the strange way people gave space to sentences they recognized as fragile. Ren's first answer was too technical. The second too cruel. The third too honest for parents, teachers, staff, and Shinso. He chose the fourth.
"You too" Izuku's mouth trembled.
"I couldn't" Ren interrupted because he knew where the sentence was going and could not bear it in public.
"Not here" Izuku froze. Then nodded.
"Okay" Uraraka looked between them, worried and exhausted. Iida bowed, less deeply than usual because his body had limits even if his etiquette resisted them.
"Akiyama. Shinso. I am relieved to see you both alive" Shinso blinked.
"You too, engine guy""Iida Tenya" Shinso glanced at Ren. Ren said nothing. Shinso sighed.
"Iida" Iida nodded, satisfied even now. Then the staff moved them along. Bakugo passed later with Kirishima and Kaminari. He had scrapes, torn fabric, and an expression sharp enough to cut through observation forms. His eyes landed on Ren's bandaged arm, then on Shinso, then on Hana and Daichi, then back to Ren. No insult came. No challenge. No dismissal. He looked away. That was worse. Kirishima saw Ren and gave a rough nod.
"Glad you're alive, man" Ren nodded back.
"Same" Bakugo clicked his tongue but did not correct the sentiment. They moved on. Hana watched every student pass. At some point, Ren realized she was seeing not future heroes, not famous classmates, not names from his notebooks, but children with dust in their hair and blankets around their shoulders. That was probably healthier. Harder. Better. Eventually, Recovery Girl ended the hallway reprieve.
"Observation room. Now. Parents can sit with him there until staff says otherwise. Shinso, Kurose has you" Shinso stood. Ren looked at him. There were many things to say. Good job. You saved people. Your Quirk was not villainous. Robots were stupid. Do not let today become the only proof you accept. None fit. Shinso solved it by speaking first.
"Don't start analyzing without me" Ren stared. Shinso looked away.
"Your notes will be worse" Ren said "Unlikely""Prove it later""Fine" Kurose's eyes moved between them. She said nothing. That was kind of her. Maybe. Ren was placed in a small observation room with a reclining medical chair, two visitor seats, a wall monitor turned off, and a window looking out over a courtyard that did not show USJ. That was intentional. U. A. understood sightlines too. Hana sat on one side. Daichi on the other. For several minutes, they did not ask for details.
Ren expected questions about villains, injuries, why he had been in maintenance corridors, why Nezu had interviewed him, what Recovery Girl meant by scar response, what exactly he had known before the exercise. They asked none of those first. Hana opened the food container someone had brought from the emergency family area and said "Eat" Ren looked at it. Rice. Soup. Protein. Soft vegetables. Too warm for institutional food. Maybe staff had reheated it. Maybe U. A. had a parent support protocol.
Maybe Lunch Rush was involved. The thought of hero society collapsing under villain attack while cafeteria logistics remained excellent was strange enough to be comforting.
"I am not hungry" Daichi said "You are not being asked for a preference" Hana lifted the spoon. Ren stared.
"I can feed myself""Can you lift that arm?"
"Yes" Recovery Girl's voice seemed to echo from outside reality. Do not perform posture at me. Ren looked at the spoon. At his mother. At his bandaged arm.
"No" he corrected Hana's expression shook. Then steadied. She fed him. The first spoonful tasted like humiliation. The second like salt. The third like exhaustion. By the fifth, his body realized food existed and became ravenous with embarrassing speed. Daichi looked away while Ren ate, pretending to examine the medical chair controls. That was also kindness. Hana fed him until the bowl was empty. Then she set it aside and wiped her hands slowly.
"Now" she said "you can tell us what you can tell us" Ren closed his eyes. There it was. Not accusation. Permission with fear behind it. He told them the sequence in a simplified form. The black fog. The staff member disappearing. The failed west corridor. The maintenance route. The villains. The shelter. The phone. Nezu. He did not name things he did not know. He did not describe the heavy combatant in detail because Hana's face was already pale enough.
He did not mention every cut, every decision point, every moment he had nearly split the group incorrectly. He did tell them he had warned Kurose before the exercise. Hana went very still. Daichi's face changed.
"You warned them""I reported a concern""Ren""I did not have evidence" Daichi leaned forward.
"You thought something might happen today""Yes" Hana stood abruptly. The chair scraped against the floor. Ren stopped speaking. She crossed to the window and put both hands on the sill. Her back shook once. Daichi looked at Ren, then at her. No one spoke. When Hana turned back, her face was wet again, but her voice was controlled.
"You went anyway""Yes""Because you thought if something happened, you should be there" Ren's mouth went dry. That was not how he had planned to explain it. It was worse. It was accurate.
"Yes" Hana closed her eyes. Daichi said "You promised you would move""I did""You moved inside the danger""I moved with students away from greater danger""That is not the same as away""No" Hana laughed once. It was not humor.
"Do you hear yourself?" Ren looked down. Yes. He did. That was the problem. Daichi's voice was quiet.
"Were you right to go?" Ren expected anger. That question was worse.
"I don't know" Hana pressed one hand to her mouth. Daichi nodded slowly.
"Good" Ren looked up. His father's eyes were red.
"I was afraid you were going to say yes" Ren had no answer. Hana came back to the chair and knelt in front of him despite the visitor seat beside her.
"You cannot become the family's emergency siren" The words struck strangely. He frowned.
"I don't understand""You cannot be the one who hears danger first and then thinks that means you belong closest to it" Ren's throat tightened. Daichi said "A warning system is not supposed to burn with the building" Ren looked between them. The room felt too small again. U. A. had not designed this one for interrogation, but family could make any room precise.
"I did not want anyone to die" Hana's face broke again.
"I know" That hurt more than disagreement. She put both hands over his uninjured one.
"I know, Ren. That is what scares me" Daichi leaned back, covering his eyes for one second before dropping his hand.
"You said you warned Kurose""Yes""Next time, you tell us too" Ren's first response was impractical. His second was you could not have acted. His third was it would only make you worry. All three died.
"Yes" Hana's fingers tightened.
"No careful loopholes" Ren looked at her.
"Yes. I will tell you too" A little of the terror left her face. Not enough. Maybe nothing would be enough tonight. A soft knock interrupted them. Kurose entered with permission from no one and apology to everyone.
"Sorry. Medical observation update" Ren noticed the way Hana straightened. Daichi too. Kurose saw it and did not pretend otherwise.
"He will stay under observation for three more hours minimum. If breathing remains stable and pain is controlled, he may go home tonight with restrictions. If not, overnight observation" Hana nodded.
"Thank you" Kurose looked at Ren.
"Also, public announcement preparation has begun. Parents will receive an official statement before the media cycle intensifies" Daichi's jaw tightened.
"Media cycle""Yes" Hana whispered "Already?" Kurose's face hardened.
"Already" Ren felt cold. The event had not finished hurting bodies, and society was already preparing to name it. Kurose continued "U. A. will state that a villain group attacked an authorized rescue training exercise, that students were evacuated under faculty protection, that injuries occurred, that no student fatalities are confirmed, that investigation is ongoing, and that further details are withheld for safety" Daichi asked "Will they mention General Studies?"
"Not in detail" Ren looked up. Kurose noticed.
"Good" she said before he could ask "Your names should not become public" Hana's face sharpened.
"Why would they?" Kurose paused. Because your son coordinated fourteen students through a maintenance route, provided operational assessments to the principal, and has unverified fragments relating to a villain attack. Because Shinso used a Quirk society likes to fear and saved people with it. Because hero society turns children into symbols quickly when frightened. Because useful stories are dangerous. Kurose said "Because students involved in crises can be misrepresented. We will avoid that" It was true.
Incomplete. Hana accepted it for now. Maybe she was too tired not to. Kurose looked at Ren.
"Nezu asked me to remind you of the instruction""Leave analysis to adults for a few hours""Yes" Daichi turned to Ren.
"That was an instruction?"
"Yes" Hana looked almost relieved.
"Good" Ren felt betrayed by everyone's approval of his forced rest. Kurose seemed to sense that.
"Also, Shinso is being kept under observation with school supervision. He asked whether your notes would be legible with one hand" Ren blinked.
"That is unlikely""He said you would say that" Ren almost smiled. This time he stopped before ribs objected. Kurose's gaze softened by a degree.
"He is not alone" Ren nodded.
"Good" After she left, evening began to enter the room in small ways. The light outside the window changed. Staff footsteps slowed. Alerts became less frequent. Hana texted relatives only the minimum. Daichi stepped into the hallway to speak with someone from U. A. administration and returned with forms he did not read immediately because paper felt obscene while his son had blood under his fingernails. Ren drifted in and out of shallow rest. Not sleep. Sleep required safety his body had not accepted yet.
Each time his eyes closed, black fog opened behind them. A door jammed. A knife moved. Aizawa hit concrete. The heavy combatant stood waiting. All Might arrived in light. Late. There. Not enough. Enough. He opened his eyes every time before the images finished. Hana noticed. Of course.
"You don't have to sleep""I should""Not everything useful has to happen immediately" That sounded like Recovery Girl. Or Kurose. Or Hana had always known and Ren had been slow. He looked at the ceiling.
"I keep seeing it" Hana's hand moved into his hair. This time he did not flinch.
"I know""You don't""No" she said softly "I don't. But I know what it looks like when something keeps replaying" Ren closed his eyes. Her hand stayed. Daichi returned to the room, saw them, and became quiet enough not to disturb the small truce. Later, Recovery Girl cleared him for discharge with the enthusiasm of someone releasing a problem into another jurisdiction. Restrictions were repeated. Hana recorded them. Daichi asked questions. Ren was not allowed to carry his own bag. He objected once.
Three adults looked at him. He stopped. On the way out, they passed a waiting area near the secured family entrance. Shinso sat there with Kurose, a bottle of water in one hand and an untouched food container beside him. His posture said he did not need anyone. The fact that he had not left said otherwise. Ren slowed. Hana slowed with him. Shinso looked up.
"You're leaving?"
"Yes""Alive?"
"Yes""Walking?"
"Slowly""Good. Try not to convert that into training" Ren said "Try eating" Shinso looked at the food container.
"I did""No""Annoying""Yes" Kurose watched them with the expression of someone deciding whether student attachment was a disciplinary issue or a survival factor. Hana stepped forward.
"Shinso" He stiffened slightly.
"Mrs. Akiyama""If you need anything tonight, even just someone to know where you are, Ren has my number" Ren looked at her. Shinso stared. Kurose's expression changed very slightly. Shinso said "That's not necessary" Hana nodded.
"Most good things aren't" He did not know what to do with that. No one rescued him from it. Good. Daichi added "Eat before the food gets cold" Shinso looked at him. Then at the container. Then muttered "Everyone's obsessed with food" Ren said "Recovery variable" Shinso pointed at him with the chopsticks he had not yet opened.
"Don't make me regret being concerned" Ren almost smiled again. Carefully. Then he left with his parents. Outside U. A., the air was cooler than it had been that morning. Evening lay across the campus with offensive beauty, soft gold on buildings that had not been attacked, long shadows across clean paths, security lights beginning to glow along fences and gates. In the distance, beyond the lines of campus, Ren could see nothing of USJ from where they walked. That made it unreal. His body argued otherwise.
At the gate, reporters had already begun gathering beyond security barriers. Cameras. Microphones. Vans. Speculation wearing makeup. U. A. security moved the families through a side exit before any camera could catch faces clearly. Still, Ren heard fragments through the air. Villain attack. All Might. Students injured. Hero Course. Symbol of Peace. Security failure. U. A. reputation. Children became narrative faster than wounds closed. Daichi noticed Ren listening.
"Don't""I wasn't""You were" Ren looked at him. Daichi shook his head.
"Not tonight" Ren wanted to argue that media framing mattered, that public narrative would affect U. A.' s response, that All Might's delayed arrival and Aizawa's injuries and General Studies involvement and Shinso's Quirk use and his own fragments all existed inside systems that would begin moving whether he slept or not. Then he remembered Nezu. Leave analysis to adults for at least a few hours. He remembered Kurose. Neither of you will decide tonight what today means for the rest of your life.
He remembered Hana. Alive before sorry. He said "Okay" Daichi looked surprised. Then grateful. The drive home was quiet. Ren sat in the back because reclining slightly hurt less. Hana sat beside him instead of in front. Daichi drove with both hands on the wheel, jaw tight, eyes forward. The city moved around them as if nothing impossible had happened. Convenience stores glowed. Bikes crossed intersections. A man in a business suit argued into a phone.
A child with a glowing Quirk drew shapes against the car window from a passing bus. Life continued with almost insulting confidence. Ren watched it until his eyes grew heavy. When they reached home, Hana helped him out despite his attempt to do it alone. Daichi carried his bag. The apartment smelled the same as morning and completely different. Shoes at the door. Kitchen light. Table. The chair where he had eaten breakfast before walking toward a dome he had half remembered.
Normal objects became cruel when they survived unchanged. Hana set up the couch with pillows because his bed would make getting up difficult. Daichi brought water, medication, and the printed discharge instructions. Ren changed with help he hated less than expected because exhaustion had sanded down pride to something blunt. When he finally lay down, ribs supported, arm elevated, blanket over him, the apartment quieted around his breathing. Hana sat near his feet. Daichi in the chair beside the couch.
Neither went to bed. Ren looked at them.
"You should sleep" Hana gave him a look. He stopped. Daichi said "We'll take shifts""That is unnecessary" Hana said "Most good things aren't" Ren recognized his mother's own phrase from Shinso and closed his eyes. For a while, there was only the hum of the refrigerator, distant traffic, and the quiet scratch of Daichi filling out a medication schedule by hand because writing things down made fear less shapeless. Ren should have slept.
Instead, he reached with his uninjured hand toward the small notebook Kurose had allowed him to keep only after removing his pen and replacing it with a soft pencil. Hana noticed. Of course.
"Ren""I am not analyzing""Then what are you doing?" He looked at the blank page. Good question. Not incident report. Not tactical map. Not villain classification. Not future prediction. Not cost table. Something else. He wrote slowly. USJ. Then stopped. His hand shook. Not from weakness only. He tried again underneath. Alive. Then: Not alone. The pencil hovered. His throat tightened. He added: Scar Tissue. The words looked wrong on the page. Too simple. Too ugly. Too true. Hana read them from her chair.
She said nothing. Daichi looked up but did not ask. Ren stared at the three lines until they blurred. USJ. Alive. Not alone. Scar Tissue. He did not write useful. He did not write functional. He did not write enough. For tonight, that was the only victory he could accept. Eventually, the pencil slipped from his fingers. Hana took the notebook gently and set it on the table where he could see it if he woke. Daichi turned off the brightest light.
Ren drifted toward sleep, resisted once when black fog waited behind his eyelids, then felt his mother's hand settle lightly against his ankle through the blanket, a small pressure that said the room was still here. The fog came again. This time, it did not arrive alone. A hallway. A shelter. Shinso's voice. Kenta's hand on his shoulder. Kurose saying not alone without using the words. Hana saying alive. Daichi saying painfully means yes. All Might arriving late.
Aizawa alive because alive had become the minimum miracle. The images did not become gentle. They became held. That was different. Ren slept badly. But he slept. And in the dark beneath bandages, where old scar and new wound lay close enough for the body to mistake one lesson for another, something quiet began the slow, painful work of remembering what had happened and deciding what to keep.
