Chương 62: Hosu Burns
MHA: Scar Tissue Hero · JuliusA · 124 chương · ~39 phút đọc · Tạo 28/08/2026
The second rescue module began with a map of Hosu. Ren did not like that. He disliked it before anyone explained the exercise, before Thirteen turned toward the board, before Cementoss placed the first marker on the printed district grid, before Kurose's eyes moved to him with the careful precision of a teacher who knew exactly which city name had been living under his skin since the cafeteria. Hosu. Black lines for streets. Blue zones for public infrastructure. Red circles for recent incident areas.
Yellow marks for active patrol corridors. A hospital district labeled in clean type. Hosu General Hospital. Ren's right hand stayed flat on the table. No scar heat. No tension. No image. Only recognition. Thirteen stood beside the map.
"Today's seminar uses a live-city model based on public geography and historical incident planning, not current deployment intelligence" Kurose added "The chosen city is relevant to ongoing public safety discussion, which is why we are using a controlled version instead of letting rumor teach you badly" Sano, seated two chairs away, looked at Ren and then very quickly looked back at the map. Good. He was learning. Kenta sat with a pencil poised over his worksheet. Arai was not present, still in Support calibration.
Shinso was in regular classes until his Aizawa block later. The absence left the side of Ren's awareness too open. Thirteen continued "Urban rescue is not only rubble. It is movement through uncertainty. Villain incidents rarely wait politely in one zone. Civilians move, traffic locks, communications fail, responders overcommit, and visible danger can distract from emerging danger" Cementoss placed another marker.
"Your task is to identify where limited responders should establish priority points if an attack occurs across multiple locations" Ren looked at the map. Limited responders. Multiple locations. Hospital district. Known Hero Killer activity. Iida in Hosu. Manual's agency. No deviations. No concerns. Yet. Kurose said "Status" Ren did not look away from the map.
"Yellow. City trigger. No image. No heat. Stable" Thirteen waited. Cementoss did too. No one rushed him. That helped and made the room worse. Kurose said "Continue?"
"Yes" The exercise began. Scenario one was a subway incident with smoke and a minor villain threat. Scenario two was a traffic pileup after a support beam collapse. Scenario three added a hospital evacuation route and a conflicting rumor of a villain sighting near the river. Ren compressed orders. No entry until smoke source identified. Move civilians perpendicular to traffic flow, not through it. Protect hospital access roads before pursuing rumor. Cementoss corrected two overpacked statements.
Thirteen praised one priority sequence. Kurose made Ren report when praise created a pressure spike. Sano identified a crowd panic point before anyone else did and looked so shocked by his own competence that Thirteen had to remind him to breathe. The room functioned. That was the problem. It functioned while Iida was in the actual city. Ren wrote: A map is not a city. Then: A city is not permission. Kurose glanced at the sentence from her place near the wall. No comment. That meant she had seen it.
Halfway through the third scenario, the first alert came. It was not dramatic. A chime on Kurose's phone. Then Cementoss's. Then Thirteen's. Three adults looked down within one second of one another. The room changed before any words did. Ren's body knew. Not fragment. Not memory. Pattern. Kurose read first. Her face did not move enough for a classmate to notice. Ren noticed.
"Status" she said The question was for him before the news was given.
"Yellow-high. Alert association. No heat. No image. Ready for information" Thirteen's helmet tilted toward Cementoss. Cementoss looked at Kurose. Kurose said "Public safety alert. Multiple villain incidents reported in Hosu" Sano's pencil fell. Kenta went still. Ren's left forearm warmed. Mild. There. Not enough for lattice. Not enough for tension. Enough for the body to remember that the map had teeth now.
"Scar heat mild left forearm" Ren said "No activation" Kurose wrote with one hand while reading updates with the other. Thirteen's voice became very calm.
"All students remain in this room unless instructed otherwise" Cementoss moved to the door. Not because of immediate threat. Because adults who understood emergencies positioned themselves before teenagers decided whether to be heroic. Another alert. Kurose read. Her eyes sharpened.
"Nomu-type creatures reported" The word hit the room like pressure change. USJ. Black fog. Aizawa on the ground. All Might late. A monster built to answer a Symbol. Ren's hand pressed flat against the table. He did not stand. Good. Bad. Kenta whispered "Nomu?" Sano's face had gone pale. Thirteen said "Breathe. This is not USJ. You are at U. A. You are not deployed" Ren heard the words as if she had placed them directly on his chest. You are not deployed. Left behind. Protected. Useless. No. Not automatically.
Kurose looked at him. Ren reported before she asked.
"Yellow-red. USJ association. Hosu association. Iida in city. No clear image. No action" Cementoss said "Sit back" Ren realized he had leaned forward again. He sat back. The chair felt like an insult. His phone buzzed. Then buzzed again. Then again. Kurose said "Phones face down unless directed" Ren did not look. He placed the phone face down. That was harder than moving debris. Sano did the same, hands shaking. Kenta followed. The next alert came through the school system. A muted tone.
Then Principal Nezu's voice over the internal speaker.
"Students and staff, U. A. is aware of developing public safety incidents in Hosu City. Students on campus are to remain in assigned locations until further notice. Teachers will provide verified information when appropriate. Do not rely on social media feeds" Stolen story; please report. Kurose's mouth tightened at that last sentence. Nezu knew students. The map on the table now looked obscene. A controlled version of a city catching fire in real time. Thirteen stepped closer to the map.
"We are suspending the exercise" Ren's body rejected that before his mouth moved. No. Not now. Stopping meant helpless. Continuing meant using the map instead of running. He looked at Kurose. She saw the calculation. Of course.
"Report" Ren swallowed.
"Want to continue. Because stopping feels like losing access to usefulness. Continuing may help organize fear. Continuing may also become performance" Kurose nodded.
"Good report" Thirteen looked at the table. Then at the students.
"We continue only as an emergency information discipline exercise. No speculation beyond verified facts. No personal deployment planning. No fantasy rescue" Sano nodded too quickly. Kenta nodded more slowly. Ren said "Understood" Cementoss moved one chair closer to the door but did not leave. Kurose wrote on the board: VERIFIED UNKNOWN ACTIONABLE HERE Three columns. She said "Everything goes in one of these. Not in your stomach. Not in your legs. Not in rumor" Ren wrote the columns in his notebook. Verified.
Unknown. Actionable here. The first verified updates were sparse. Multiple villain attacks in Hosu. Several pro heroes engaged. Nomu-type creatures sighted. Public evacuation routes active. Endeavor Agency involved. Ren's hand tightened. Endeavor. Todoroki. Fire. City. No.
"Status" Kurose said"Yellow-red. Endeavor and Todoroki association. No heat increase. No image" Unknown. Todoroki's current location relative to incidents. Unknown. Midoriya's location. Unknown. Iida's location. Unknown. Ren hated the unknown column. It grew too fast. The actionable here column remained small. Stay in assigned room. Report fragment or physical change. Do not call deployed students unless instructed. Do not spread unverified information. Eat emergency snack if meeting extends beyond schedule.
Sano stared at that last one.
"Is snack discipline really actionable?" Kurose looked at him.
"You are pale and have not eaten since breakfast" Sano opened his mouth. Closed it. Ate the emergency cracker Thirteen handed him. Ren almost smiled. Almost. Then his phone buzzed again. Once. Twice. Longer this time. Kurose looked at the screen of her own phone. Her eyes sharpened.
"Akiyama. Phone" Ren turned it over. A message from Midoriya. Location sent. Then a second message. I found him. Then a third. Hero Killer. The room collapsed inward. Not physically. Ren's left forearm burned hot enough that he inhaled through his teeth. Kurose moved instantly.
"Status""Red spike. Scar heat left forearm. Fragment confirmation. Midoriya sent location and Hero Killer. Iida likely present. Need protocol" Cementoss was already at the door. Thirteen stepped toward Ren. Kurose held out her hand.
"Phone" Ren gave it to her. His fingers wanted to grip it. He released. Good. Terrible. Kurose read the messages once. Her face became still.
"Nezu" She called immediately. Ren heard the line connect. He heard Kurose's voice become the exact tone she used when emotion had no place to stand.
"Midoriya has sent Akiyama a location from Hosu and identified Hero Killer. Likely student contact. Initiating emergency chain" Ren's pulse hammered. Actionable here changed. Not enough. Too much. He could give the location. He had already given the phone. He could report. He could not go. He stood. Cementoss said "Sit" Ren did not sit. Kurose looked at him.
"Akiyama""They are there""Yes""I have location""Which you gave us""I saw this""You reported it""I can help""You are helping" His breath came too fast. Recovery Girl's voice came through Kurose's phone speaker, sharp enough to cut through distance.
"Ren Akiyama, sit down" The use of his full name struck like a hook. He sat. Not because he wanted to. Because that voice had dragged too many students back from stupidity to be ignored.
"Status" Recovery Girl said"Red decreasing. Scar heat left forearm. No lattice. No tension. Wanting to deploy. Strong""You are not deployed""I know""Say it""I am not deployed""Again""I am not deployed""Again like you are not planning an argument" Ren gripped the edge of the chair. Then released.
"I am not deployed" Recovery Girl said "Good" He hated everyone. He loved everyone. Both. Kurose was already forwarding Midoriya's location through official emergency channels. Nezu was on another line. Cementoss stood by the door. Thirteen had moved closer to the students, one hand raised slightly as if she could hold panic in place by posture alone. Sano whispered "Midoriya is with Stain?" Kurose snapped "Unknown" Sano flinched. Then nodded.
"Unknown" Kenta said "Actionable here?" His voice shook. Kurose looked at him.
"Good question" She turned to the board and wrote. Forward location. Notify staff. Stay secure. No student calls unless directed. Monitor Akiyama physical state. Prepare witness statements if needed. Ren stared at the board. Monitor Akiyama physical state. He hated being actionable. He hated more that it was correct. Thirteen said "Akiyama, what did Midoriya send exactly?" Kurose answered "Location and Hero Killer. No additional text" Ren's phone buzzed in Kurose's hand. Everyone looked at it. She read.
"Todoroki: Received Midoriya location. Moving with agency authorization" Ren closed his eyes. Todoroki. Moving. Agency authorization. Endeavor in city. Fire and ice. Alley. Blade. Iida. Midoriya. Stain. It was happening. The fragment had become weather. Ren said "Todoroki will go" Kurose said "He already is""Midoriya will not leave Iida""Known pattern""Iida may not accept rescue if revenge state persists""Report, not deployment" Ren forced the words into the room.
"Iida's likely failure point is identity lock. He may refuse rescue if he believes leaving means abandoning Ingenium's justice. Midoriya should focus on interrupting action, not arguing ideology. Todoroki can name family pain without revealing mine. Someone needs to make Iida choose being brother over being revenge" Kurose wrote while Nezu listened over the open line. Recovery Girl said "Good. Keep going if useful. Stop if spiraling" Ren breathed.
"Stain's ideology targets worthiness. He may judge students, especially Midoriya, by heroic purity. Midoriya is vulnerable to being praised for self-sacrifice. Todoroki is vulnerable to family injury becoming identity. Iida is vulnerable to vengeance wearing duty. Native or other heroes may be immobilized. Stain likely uses blood or injury trigger based public reports of paralysis" Kurose's pen moved faster. Nezu's voice came through now.
"Noted. Some of that aligns with public intelligence. Some does not. All treated as threat analysis" Ren nodded even though Nezu could not see him unless Kurose had turned the camera. Thirteen's helmet angled toward him.
"Breathe between sentences" He did. Sano stared at him with wide eyes. Ren looked away. This was the danger of being useful in front of classmates. Not all secrets could remain invisible once the emergency used them. Kurose saw his glance.
"Classified elements remain classified. Everyone in this room will follow confidentiality instructions after the incident" Sano nodded. Kenta nodded. The other students nodded too quickly. Good enough for crisis. Bad enough for later. Ren could not fix that now. Another update. Nomu engaging multiple heroes. Endeavor active. Civilians evacuating. Stain location not officially confirmed. Midoriya's location forwarded. Pro heroes rerouting. Ren stared at the board. Actionable here. Small column. Too small.
His left forearm cooled by degrees. Then warmed again when a fragment hit. Not visual first. Sound. A blade sliding across stone. A boy breathing through clenched teeth. Engines silent. Midoriya shouting a name. No. Ren's hand gripped air.
"Fragment" he said "Audio. Blade. Engines silent. Midoriya calling Iida. No new location. No additional tactical value" Recovery Girl said "Pain?"
"Forearm heat. Chest tight. No activation""Hands open" He opened them.
"Feet flat" He planted them.
"Do not make your nervous system become a radio antenna""I know""Do you?"
"Mostly""Good enough" Kurose kept one hand on the desk near Ren's phone. The screen lit again. This time it was not Midoriya. Todoroki. Message short. Found them. Then nothing. Ren's breath stopped. Kurose read it aloud only to Nezu, not the room. Ren heard anyway because his entire body had become attention. Found them. Verified. Todoroki reached location. Unknown. Condition. Actionable here. Nothing new. Nothing. Nothing. The next fifteen minutes were the longest Ren had ever spent sitting.
Longer than waiting for U. A. entrance exam results. Longer than waiting for Recovery Girl's verdict after Scar Lattice. Longer than the space between Todoroki's ice moving and Ren's body deciding wrong priority. Because in those moments he had something to do. Here, the correct action was not doing. Cementoss quietly moved the other students to the far side of the room with Thirteen. Kenta resisted for one second, then obeyed. Sano looked at Ren like he wanted to say something useful and could not find the signal.
Ren appreciated that he did not try. Kurose stayed. Recovery Girl stayed on the line. Nezu sent updates when he could. Ren reported every physical change. Heat down. Heat up. No thread. No lattice. Nausea. Water accepted. Snack refused, then accepted after Recovery Girl threatened to arrive through the phone by force. At one point, Ren stood again without deciding to. Kurose said only "No" He sat. The word worked because she had used it before the body became argument. Then the news came in fragments.
Students located by pro heroes. Hero Killer subdued. Injuries reported. No fatalities reported among students. Midoriya alive. Todoroki alive. Iida alive. Native alive. Stain in custody or incapacitated pending confirmation. Alive. Alive. Alive. Ren's body did not believe the first report. It waited for the second. Then the third. Then the official U. A. confirmation. When Kurose finally said "All three students are alive and receiving medical assessment" Ren's left forearm went cold so fast it hurt.
He bent forward with one hand over his mouth. Recovery Girl's voice softened by half a degree.
"Breathe" He breathed. Badly.
"Again" He did.
"Status""Yellow-red decreasing. Relief crash. Nausea. Scar heat gone. No activation""Good" Ren laughed once. It was not funny. No one treated it as funny. Thirteen returned to the table with water. Cementoss opened the emergency snack drawer built into the rescue annex cabinet. Apparently every adult in U. A. had one. Kurose looked at the board. Verified. Students alive. Hero Killer subdued. Nomu threat ongoing but contained by pro heroes. Unknown. Extent of injuries. Legal consequences. Media exposure.
Stain ideology impact. Iida's emotional state. Actionable here. Medical regulation. Debrief. Confidentiality. Food. Ren stared at that last word.
"Food is in every column eventually" Kurose said "Yes" Sano, from across the room, raised a shaky hand. Kurose looked at him.
"Is this a bad time to say that food logistics are emotionally consistent?"
"Yes" He lowered his hand.
"Understood" Ren almost smiled. Almost. Then his phone buzzed again. Kurose checked. She looked at Ren.
"From Midoriya" Ren held out his hand. She considered. Then gave him the phone. The message was only four words. Alive. Iida hurt. Sorry. Ren stared at the apology. Of course. Of course Midoriya apologized from a battlefield where he had probably kept someone alive. Ren typed slowly because his hands were still unsteady. Alive first. Explain later. No apology now. He sent it. A minute later, another message came. Todoroki. Alive. Iida conscious. Midoriya hurt but moving. Hero Killer down. Endeavor nearby.
Not alone. Ren read Not alone three times. Then replied. Good. Stay that way. Todoroki answered. Yes. Simple. Useful. Ren wanted to ask about Iida. He did not. Not through text. Not now. He placed the phone down. Kurose watched him.
"Good choice" Ren closed his eyes.
"I hate not asking""I know" Recovery Girl said "Hate it while eating" Thirteen handed him the snack. He ate. The students were eventually released under confidentiality instructions. Kurose gave them plain language.
"You witnessed emergency protocol. You do not discuss Akiyama's reports, physical reactions, messages, or any classified content. You may say the module was interrupted by verified public safety alerts and staff followed procedure. You may say you were scared. You may not make fear into gossip" Kenta nodded first.
"I understand" Sano's face remained pale.
"I understand" Ren looked at him. Sano said "Signal stays inside the room unless cleared" Kurose's expression shifted.
"Yes" Good. Arai would have approved. Ren was not allowed to walk home. That had already become clear before anyone said it. Hana arrived at U. A. with Daichi. Shinso arrived separately from Aizawa training, because apparently the food network had become an emergency notification network too. He looked at Ren. Then at Kurose. Then back.
"Hosu?" Ren nodded.
"Alive?"
"Midoriya, Todoroki, Iida alive. Injuries. Stain down" Shinso closed his eyes for one second.
"Good" No joke. No protest. Just good. Hana crossed the hallway and stopped before touching Ren.
"Status""Yellow. Relief crash. No heat. Ate. Need home" She nodded.
"Home" Daichi looked at Kurose.
"Anything we need tonight?" Kurose handed him a written aftercare sheet.
"No media. No replay footage. Food. Hydration. Warm shower if tolerated. Notebook limit fifteen minutes and no tactical reconstruction. Monitor for fever, scar heat, nightmares, compulsive messaging. If he asks to check news more than once, redirect to official summary" Daichi read it. Then nodded.
"Good" The word was everywhere. Ren leaned against the wall. Just for a second. Shinso moved closer but did not touch.
"Walking?"
"Yes""You look like wet paper with opinions" Ren almost laughed. Almost.
"Accurate" In the car, no one played the radio. Hana sat beside Ren in the back while Shinso took the other side, because apparently he was coming to dinner without anyone stating it. Daichi drove. The city outside looked normal enough to be offensive. People walked. Bikes passed. Convenience stores glowed. Somewhere in Hosu, streets burned and heroes bled and three students who should not have been in an alley had survived anyway. Ren stared at his hands. Open. Still. Not deployed. Useful. Not enough. Both.
Hana placed a wrapped rice ball in his hand.
"Do not argue with it" Ren looked at the rice ball.
"It has not spoken""It knows what it did" Shinso took his own rice ball without being told.
"Your mother has weaponized carbohydrates" Daichi said from the front "Longstanding doctrine" Ren ate. At home, dinner happened around the hole the day had made. Hana kept the television off. Daichi received one official summary through Kurose and read it silently before placing the phone face down. Shinso sat at the table with a blanket over his shoulders because he had arrived damp from a sudden rain and Hana had not asked permission before logistics occurred. Ren did not write until after dinner.
The notebook limit was fifteen minutes. No tactical reconstruction. No play-by-play. No alley. No blade. No imagining whether he could have changed anything if he had been there. Especially not that. He wrote: Hosu burned. Then stopped. Too broad. Too dramatic. He crossed it out. He wrote: The crisis reached the map. Then: I gave location and analysis. Then: I did not go. His hand paused. That sentence stayed. Then he added: Not going was not nothing. The pen trembled.
Shinso, across the room, looked up from his own notes.
"Status?" Ren breathed.
"Yellow. Writing hard sentence. No heat""Need witness?" Ren hesitated. Then turned the notebook. Shinso read. The crisis reached the map. I gave location and analysis. I did not go. Not going was not nothing. Shinso looked at the page for a long time. Then said "Correct" Ren closed his eyes.
"Crowded first action?" Shinso glanced at him.
"What?"
"In rescue module. I had five first actions. Too many" Shinso looked back at the notebook.
"This one is one sentence" Ren opened his eyes. Not going was not nothing. One sentence. A compressed order to himself. Ren nodded. Hana approached quietly and placed tea near him. Daichi sat in the armchair, silent, watching neither the news nor Ren too directly. The apartment held. Not perfectly. Enough. Later, after Shinso left with Bentaro because rain had become a personal challenge to the umbrella, Ren received one more message. Iida. It arrived at 22: 13. I heard it. Ren stared. Only three words. No apology.
No explanation. No name. No alley. No report. But Ren knew. If his name sounds like an order, stop. I heard it. He typed back. Good. Then stopped. Deleted it. Too little. He typed again. That mattered. Sent. Iida did not answer. That was fine. Maybe not fine. Enough. Ren placed the phone down and lay back against the pillow. The city outside was quiet. Hosu was not. Somewhere, Midoriya was probably apologizing to nurses. Todoroki was probably pretending he was less shaken than he was.
Iida was probably sitting with the ruins of a revenge he had not completed and the injury of a brother he still could not repair. Stain was alive. That mattered too. His ideology would not stay in the alley. Things like that rarely did. Ren touched the inside of his left sleeve where the scar had gone cool. Anchor. Not deployed. Not absent. Not enough. Maybe enough to keep one person from drifting completely into a wound. For tonight, he let that be a kind of usefulness.
For tonight, he did not ask his body to prove it.
