Internships did not end when students returned to campus. That was the first thing Kurose wrote on the board. The second was worse. RETURN IS PART OF THE FIELD Class 1-C sat in silence. Not because they had all understood. Because by this point, every sentence Kurose wrote in capital letters had developed the ability to cause structural damage. Sano stared at the board with visible suspicion.
"Is this going to become emotional paperwork?" Kurose did not turn around.
"Yes" Sano folded his hands on his desk.
"I respect the warning""Good" The class groaned. The word had survived Hosu and become worse. Ren sat beside Shinso with his notebook open and his left sleeve light over cooling scars. The heat responses had faded after two days without further fragment activation. Recovery Girl had called this good. Ren had called it suspicious. Recovery Girl had called him predictable. Both statements had entered the medical record because she believed in documenting anything that annoyed him effectively.
His internal modules had continued. Hazard assessment. Compression drills. Scar Tension release observation. Not activation. Release. Always release. He had moved a smooth disk seven times without triggering the thread beneath his fingertip. On the eighth, the heat had begun, and he had dropped the disk before his body could decide helping meant holding. Recovery Girl had nearly smiled. A terrifying event.
Shinso had returned from Aizawa's observation block with sore forearms, a deeper hatred of chairs, and a new ability to identify when his feet wanted to leave a conversation before his mouth admitted it. Arai had spent two days with Support calibration and now looked at every tool in the classroom as if she were deciding whether it had been designed by someone with hands. Kenta had observed rescue coordination and developed an unsettling fondness for flowcharts.
Sano had attended communication logistics and now carried colored cards in his pocket with the solemnity of a boy entrusted with national secrets and snack distribution. None of them had gone to Hosu. Hosu had come back with everyone anyway. Kurose faced the class.
"Today's debrief has three parts. What went out. What came back. What must not be carried alone" Ren wrote the headings. Beside him, Shinso muttered "That last one is propaganda" Kurose said "Corrective propaganda""Worse""Better" Sano whispered "She can counter anything" Arai said "That is why she teaches civics" Kurose lifted a folder.
"Several Hero Course students will join part of today's debrief. This is not a spectacle. This is not testimony for curiosity. This is controlled peer learning because your paths now intersect institutionally" A ripple moved through the room. Not excitement. Not exactly fear. Weight. Ren's right hand flattened on the desk. Shinso noticed.
"Status?"
"Yellow. Anticipation. No heat""Same without heat and with regret""About?"
"People""Broad""Accurate" Kurose opened the door. Aizawa entered first. He looked like a man who had slept badly for a decade and considered that everyone else's problem. Behind him came Midoriya, Iida, Todoroki, Uraraka, and Yaoyorozu. That was unexpected. Ren's attention moved to Yaoyorozu. She had not been in Hosu. But internship experiences were not only Hosu, and leadership consequences did not require an alley to become dangerous.
Uraraka looked tired in a way Ren recognized from people who had learned something useful and disliked the cost. Midoriya's shoulder was bandaged beneath his uniform, his fingers supported but not broken open in the old catastrophic pattern. Todoroki's arm had a light wrap. Iida moved carefully, posture still formal but less perfect. Less perfect was better. Aizawa stood near the wall. Kurose gestured to the front seats. The Hero Course students sat facing 1-C rather than standing before them. Good. Not testimony.
Conversation. Aizawa's eyes moved across the room and stopped on no one for too long. That was his version of tact. Kurose began.
"This is a peer debrief. No one is required to disclose medical detail, disciplinary detail, classified information, or anything not cleared by staff. You may speak in categories. You may refuse questions. You may correct framing. You may stop" Aizawa added "And if anyone turns this into gossip, I will know" Sano's hand rose halfway, then lowered itself. Growth. Kurose looked at the visiting students.
"Each of you will answer one prompt. Not a full report. One return statement. What did the field send back with you?" She turned first to Uraraka. Uraraka blinked, then nodded. Ren watched her sit straighter. Not performative. Choosing. She said "The field sent back my body knowing more than my pride did" The room went quiet. Uraraka looked at her hands.
"I trained with Gunhead. I thought I was going to learn how to fight better, and I did. But mostly I learned that being close to danger changes the way fear moves. I used to think wanting to support my family made me selfish sometimes. Then I realized money is not separate from rescue when people need homes, hospitals, food, and time to recover" Kurose nodded.
"Good. Category?" Uraraka thought.
"Motivation clarified. Body humbled" Kurose wrote it on the board. Motivation clarified. Body humbled. Midoriya watched the words as if they were a new kind of notebook entry. Kurose turned to Yaoyorozu. Yaoyorozu's hands rested perfectly on her lap. That was the first warning with her. She said "The field sent back uncertainty about competence" Several students looked surprised. Yaoyorozu continued "My internship was not a crisis like Hosu. I should be grateful for that, and I am.
But I also realized that my training has rewarded preparation in controlled contexts. In professional spaces, expectations shift quickly. Social performance, public image, strategy, etiquette, and practical decision-making overlap. I found myself competent in many pieces and uncertain in the sequence" Ren's pen moved. Competent in pieces. Uncertain in sequence. That was not only her. Kurose wrote. Competence fragmented by context. Aizawa looked at Yaoyorozu for half a second. Approval hidden as fatigue.
Kurose turned to Todoroki. Todoroki looked at the board before speaking.
"The field sent back the fact that useful people can still be unsafe" No one spoke. Todoroki's voice remained even. Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
"My father helped Hosu. He fought well. He also remains a person whose attention can become pressure. Both are true. If I ignore either one, I make worse decisions" Ren looked down. Good and insufficient. Todoroki did not look at him. That was better. Kurose wrote. Useful does not equal safe. Aizawa's eyes narrowed slightly. Not in correction. In interest. Kurose turned to Midoriya. Midoriya swallowed. His hands moved toward his notebook. Stopped. Stayed open. Progress.
"The field sent back that small control is not cowardice" All Might's influence. Ren's influence. Gran Torino's shoe-shaped terror, probably. Midoriya continued "I still acted recklessly. I sent location, but not correctly enough. I entered danger before the right adults could arrive. I got hurt. But I also did not break myself the way I used to. I thought before using power. Not every time. Not enough. But more" He looked at Ren for one brief second. Then away.
"I used to think if I did not give everything, I was holding back from saving someone. I am trying to understand that sometimes giving everything all at once leaves less to save with" Kurose's pen paused. Then wrote. Small control preserves future action. Ren copied it. Shinso whispered "Disgustingly useful" Ren whispered "Yes" Kurose turned to Iida last. The room changed. Iida sat with both hands on his knees. His glasses reflected the board light. For several seconds, he said nothing. Kurose waited.
Aizawa waited. Everyone waited. Iida finally spoke.
"The field sent back my brother's name" Silence. Not empty. Not safe. Present. Iida continued "I carried it badly. I used it as an order. I used it as a weapon. I forgot that Ingenium meant people finding help. I remembered too late. But not never" Midoriya's eyes lowered. Todoroki's face remained still. Ren's hand pressed flat against his page. Iida's voice shook once. Then steadied.
"I am not ready to carry that name. I may not be for a long time. But I do not want Stain to be the last person who shaped what I do with it" Kurose wrote slowly. Name recovered from weapon. No one breathed loudly. Then Sano raised his hand. Aizawa's eyes moved to him. Kurose said "Sano" Sano looked like he regretted all previous life choices.
"This might be wrong""Say it carefully" He looked at Iida.
"Is a name allowed to rest?" The room went still again. Sano's face reddened.
"I mean. If everyone keeps asking what survives it, what it means, how to carry it, how to repair it. Does it ever just get to sit somewhere without being used?" Iida stared at him. Ren stared too. Sano looked like he wanted the floor to rescue him. Iida's answer came quietly.
"I do not know" Sano nodded.
"Me neither" Kurose wrote another line. A name may need rest before repair. Aizawa looked at Kurose. Kurose did not look back. The lesson had grown teeth of its own. Then Kurose turned to Ren.
"Cross-course perspective. Voluntary" Ren expected the request. That did not make it easier. He stood because sitting felt too protected and standing too dangerous, which meant either choice would be partly wrong.
"The field sent back proof that I was useful while not deployed" The words sounded ugly. He let them.
"I forwarded Midoriya's location. I reported threat analysis. I stayed in the room. I did not go to Hosu" He looked at the board.
"Not going was not nothing" Midoriya looked up sharply. Todoroki's eyes moved to him. Iida's hands tightened. Ren continued "I hated that. I still hate it. Part of me envied the people who were physically there even while they were in danger. That is ugly. It is also true" Kurose did not write immediately. Good. Let the sentence be what it was before making it useful. Ren breathed.
"Approved distance can be care. It can also feel like being left behind. Both are true. The part I have to train is not turning the second truth into proof that the first is false" Kurose wrote. Distance as action. Envy reported. Not deployment ≠ absence. Shinso leaned back in his chair.
"Unbearably precise" Ren sat. Kurose looked at Shinso.
"Your turn. Cross-course perspective. Voluntary" Shinso's face went blank. Betrayal. Then he stood.
"The field sent back that I was not in the field either" Aizawa's eyes shifted. Shinso did not look at him.
"I observed. I trained. I learned that people not answering me is not an emergency. I learned that moving without my Quirk is worse than I want to admit. I learned that being useful later requires being bad at things now" He looked at Iida for one second. Then at Ren.
"I also learned that not being told everything is not always exclusion" That sentence landed with more weight than most people in the room understood. Ren did. Kurose did. Todoroki maybe did. Shinso continued "It still feels like it" Kurose wrote. Not knowing can be care. Still feels like exclusion. Shinso sat down as if the chair had become a moral enemy. Aizawa spoke then.
"This is what return is for" Everyone looked at him. He looked annoyed that attention had consequences.
"You go out. You come back with bad habits, useful habits, injuries, overconfidence, guilt, and incomplete conclusions. If school does not make you unpack them, the field decides what they mean for you" Kurose wrote that too. Aizawa looked at Midoriya.
"Small control does not erase reckless entry" Midoriya bowed his head.
"Yes""Iida. Honest confession does not erase misconduct" Iida nodded.
"Yes""Todoroki. Correct boundaries with your father do not replace training your own control""Yes""Uraraka. Motivation clarified does not mean pressure solved" Uraraka nodded.
"Yes""Yaoyorozu. Competence fragmentation means train sequence, not self-disgust" Yaoyorozu's eyes widened. Then she nodded.
"Yes" Aizawa looked at Ren.
"Akiyama. Being useful at distance does not mean you are cleared to chase distance until it becomes fieldwork" Ren closed his eyes.
"Yes""Shinso. Being bad at movement is not evidence you should retreat into your Quirk" Shinso grimaced.
"Yes" Aizawa looked at the whole room.
"Return debrief ends when your behavior changes. Not when you feel understood" He stepped back. Apparently done. Kurose looked almost pleased. Almost. The debrief continued with structured pair work. Because of course it did. No one escaped emotional paperwork. Pairs were assigned by Kurose, which meant no one trusted coincidence. Ren was paired with Yaoyorozu. Shinso with Uraraka. Iida with Kenta. Midoriya with Arai. Todoroki with Sano. That last one made several people look alarmed. Kurose ignored them.
Ren sat across from Yaoyorozu at a side table. She folded her hands. He opened his notebook. The worksheet prompt read: What is one incomplete conclusion you brought back? Yaoyorozu read it and smiled without humor.
"Kurose-sensei is efficient""Yes" She looked at her page.
"My incomplete conclusion is that hesitation proves I am not ready" Ren wrote it down. Then looked up.
"That is a dangerous one""I know""Do you?" She gave him a faint look.
"Mostly" Ren almost smiled. The word had traveled. She continued "I am used to solving problems by preparation. When preparation does not cover a social or professional variable, I feel as though I failed before acting" Ren nodded.
"Competence fragmented by context""Yes" He thought of five first actions on one card.
"Mine is that not being deployed means I was less involved" Yaoyorozu considered.
"That is also dangerous""Yes""Do you believe it?"
"Partly""Then it will shape your next decision if untreated" Ren stared. She blinked. Then said "I apologize. That sounded like Kurose-sensei""Do not apologize. It was accurate" Yaoyorozu looked relieved and pained.
"Unfortunate""Yes" They wrote their corrected conclusions. Yaoyorozu wrote: Hesitation indicates a sequencing need, not proof of unfitness. Ren wrote: Distance reduced harm and preserved function. It did not erase involvement. He disliked how clinical it sounded. He added: I was not absent. Better. Across the room, Shinso and Uraraka were in discussion. Uraraka said something with both hands moving. Shinso looked at her as if she had turned gravity into emotional architecture. He wrote something reluctantly.
At another table, Iida sat across from Kenta. Kenta spoke slowly, hands folded, giving Iida time to answer without filling the silence for him. Good pairing. Kurose was terrifying. Midoriya and Arai were bent over a worksheet, Arai apparently explaining that overcomplicated notebooks could become inaccessible in crisis and Midoriya looking personally injured by the idea that information needed design.
Sano and Todoroki sat in a silence that looked like a hostage situation until Sano said something and Todoroki blinked. Then, unbelievably, Todoroki answered. Sano wrote it down with the expression of someone handling volatile material. Ren desperately wanted to know what had been said. He did not ask. Growth. Probably. After the session, Kurose collected only the corrected conclusions, not the original ones. That mattered too. Some truths needed to be known. Some needed to be processed and not archived forever.
At lunch, the groups mixed again. Not fully. Carefully. Midoriya sat beside Ren after asking with his eyes first, which was progress so dramatic Ren considered alerting All Might. Todoroki sat near Iida without crowding him. Uraraka sat between Shinso and Yaoyorozu, forming a social bridge through sheer warmth and stubbornness. Sano had somehow ended up near Todoroki again, possibly because he was studying him as a rare quiet species. Midoriya opened his lunch and looked at Ren.
"You said you envied us" Ren swallowed.
"Yes" Midoriya's expression tightened.
"I envied you" Ren stared. Midoriya looked down at his food.
"You were safe. I know that is not fair. I know safe is not easy for you. But in the alley, when I realized Stain was actually there, part of me thought you had warned us and were not there to be cut by it. I was glad. And I envied that you were not there" Ren did not know what to do with that. Shinso said from two seats away "This table has become psychologically hazardous" Uraraka said "It is still better than pretending" Shinso pointed at her with chopsticks.
"That optimism is why you are dangerous" She smiled faintly.
"Thanks?" Ren looked at Midoriya.
"Both can be true" Midoriya nodded.
"Yes" Iida, from across the table, spoke quietly.
"I envied neither of you. I wished none of you had come" Midoriya flinched. Iida continued "And I was grateful you did" Todoroki said "Both" Iida nodded.
"Yes" Sano looked down at his food.
"Is this what debriefing does to people?" Kurose, passing behind them, said "If successful" Sano whispered "Horrifying" Todoroki said "Useful" Sano stared at him.
"You participated" Todoroki looked at his tray.
"I am told this happens now" Ren almost smiled. Lunch survived. That was becoming a theme. In the afternoon, Hero Course students returned to their own classes. 1-C returned to cross-course planning. Normal schedules resumed around the damaged places. At the end of the day, Kurose called Ren and Shinso to her office. Ren expected another file. There was always another file. This one was thin. That meant dangerous. Kurose placed two pages on the desk.
"Cross-Course Track adjustment" Shinso leaned back.
"I dislike thin documents""Reasonable" Ren read the first page. Continued internal modules approved. Scar Tension release training continued. Hazard assessment advanced observation pending. No external internship clearance. Then a new line. Peer integration exercises with selected Hero Course students authorized under supervision. Ren looked up.
"Selected?"
"Yes. Midoriya, Todoroki, Uraraka, Iida, Yaoyorozu, and others as appropriate" Shinso looked at his page.
"Why?" Kurose answered "Because your trajectories now intersect whether we pretend otherwise or not. Because Hero Course students need structured exposure to cross-course candidates without making you symbols. Because you need structured exposure to field-return students without turning them into proof against yourselves" Ren read the line again. Peer integration. Not transfer. Not internship. Hallway. Always hallway. Shinso asked "Aizawa involved?"
"Yes""Good or bad?"
"Yes" Ren almost smiled. Kurose continued "This is not a social club. It is not remedial. It is not Hero Course charity. It is controlled mixed training, ethics, scenario compression, and field-debrief integration" Ren looked at the page.
"Can this support transfer evaluation?"
"Yes" There it was. The old hunger. Still alive. Quieter now. Not gone. Ren reported.
"Yellow. Hope spike. No heat. Wanting to make this mean door" Kurose wrote. Shinso looked at his own page.
"Same except resentment spike and no heat" Kurose wrote that too.
"Good reports" Shinso closed his eyes.
"I hate the hallway" Kurose's voice softened by a fraction.
"No. You hate that it is real enough to matter and narrow enough to hurt" Shinso opened his eyes. Ren did not speak. Because yes. The chapter of their lives that came after Hosu had not become peace. It had become infrastructure. That evening, the Akiyama apartment held one of the larger dinners without calling it anything large. Hana cooked too much. Daichi fixed the lamp successfully enough that everyone agreed not to test it emotionally.
Shinso arrived with homework and the expression of a person who had stopped pretending the invitation was temporary but had not yet accepted the category aloud. Ren explained the mixed training adjustment. Hana listened with one hand on the rice pot. Daichi leaned back.
"Real hallway" Ren nodded.
"Yes" Shinso looked at his worksheet.
"Narrow enough to hate" Hana said "Most real doors begin that way" Shinso stared at her.
"Must everything be thematically accurate in this house?" Daichi said "No. Sometimes the umbrella is just an umbrella" Silence. Everyone looked toward Bentaro. Daichi sighed.
"Bad example" Ren laughed. Small. Real. No rib pain. Hana smiled into the rice pot. Shinso looked betrayed by warmth again. After dinner, Ren opened his notebook under no special restriction for the first time in days. Normal notebook use. That felt dangerously like freedom. He wrote: What returns from the field? Then: Injuries. Skills. Guilt. False conclusions. Useful habits. Names that changed shape. Then: What returned to me? Distance. Envy. Proof that distance can act.
Proof that action at distance still wounds. He paused. Then wrote: The hallway is real. The sentence looked too small for how much it hurt. He added: Real enough to matter. Narrow enough to hurt. He closed the notebook. Across the city, Iida Tenya sat beside his brother's hospital bed for the first time since returning from Hosu's alley. Tensei slept. Machines hummed. The Ingenium name rested between them, neither weapon nor route for the moment, only a name beside a bed.
Iida placed one hand on the blanket near his brother's fingers. Not touching. Close.
"I will begin with one step" he whispered Tensei did not answer. That was all right. The name could rest. At U. A., Midoriya sat with his notebook and wrote small control preserves future action three times before All Might found him and told him sleeping also preserved future action. Todoroki looked at a message from Fuyumi and answered with one honest sentence instead of three controlled ones. Uraraka called her parents and talked about money without apologizing for caring.
Yaoyorozu rewrote a training plan around sequence rather than perfection. Sano made three signal cards and labeled one silence can be support. Kenta drew a route map and placed the word help at the end instead of proof. Arai redesigned Midoriya's note layout in her head and decided not to mention it until asked. Shinso, back home later than usual, wrote only one line before sleeping. Not knowing can be care. Still feels like exclusion. He hated it. He kept it.
Ren placed the Anchor card back in his notebook and turned off the light. The field had returned many things. Some useful. Some infected. Some still unnamed. Tomorrow, the hallway would continue. Not a door. Not a wall. A real place to walk. For now, that was enough to make the next step both possible and painful. Which probably meant it mattered.
