Long Feng strolled through the hundreds of corpses, pausing sometimes to observe some formations. Most of them were completely destroyed, leaving nothing, which showed the great power that swept through the place. But a few of them were barely harmed or even untouched completely. This was weird, considering that the formations should have impeded upon the enemy's path. What were the chances that the attacker was a powerful cultivator and a powerful soul master at the same time?
Long Feng paused before the corpse of a youth and knelt down beside it. The corpse was already beginning to decay, but Long Feng could still see the fear and disbelief on the youth's face as he died. His void ring was gone — same as all the other corpses they had passed. Long Feng stood up to move ahead even he suddenly noticed something. On the robes of the youth, there was a symbol of a mountain with clouds at its peak.
The symbol was soaked with the youth's blood, making it unclear, but Long Feng could still make it out. He investigated the other corpses and realized that they all had the same symbol engraved on the chests of their robes.
"That must be the symbol of the clan." He deduced and moved on.
"I can't sense any remnant aura from any of the corpses, so I can't determine their cultivation before they died." After death, the cultivation of those below the Dao realm would disperse, returning their bodies to it's fully mortal state as it rotted. Only the corpse of a Dao realm master would keep some remnant of it's aura long after it died, but it would still rot. Only a true spirit realm master's corpse wouldn't decay for a decade.
He knelt down beside another corpse and carefully lifted it's rotting arm to send his soul power into it's body.
"This one was killed by a powerful impact… likely a shockwave that crushed his heart." He moved to another corpse and did the same thing.
"This one as well." After a few minutes, he realized that most of these people died from a powerful impact that crushed their organs.
"If I'm not wrong, then most of them here were Imperials or spirit realm warriors. The shockwaves from the collision of deities and Dao realm masters is more than enough to slaughter half of the clan if they're below the deity realm.
"Long Feng! Night is approaching! We need to leave here before nighttime. Quit acting all mysterious and come scout the way!" Ren Ji's voice sounded, causing a deep frown to etch itself upon Long Feng's face.
"Hehehe. What a coward. He's moving around like he's actually deducing something, while all he's actually doing is stalling for time!" Zhou Zheng mocked. They had all tried to investigate the corpses, but the sight of so much corpses and the pools of blood stopped them dead in their tracks. No matter how they searched, they couldn't find a single detail. Seeing Long Feng moving around with a focused gaze made them feel like he was faking it.
His soul power wasn't even as powerful as his cultivation, and he was the weakest among them. How could he figure out something they couldn't? Long Feng gave up his search and walked towards the core of the clan while glancing at the sky. Through the light curtain of blood fog, he noticed that night really was fast approaching. The aura of resentment was likely to grow more potent at night, and even cultivators would be terrified to be here at night.
"You should go in first and scout the surrounding fifty meters. Come back out and tell us if there's anything strange." Ren Ji's heart couldn't rest easy as he stated at the thick fog of blood mist ahead. Not knowing what was behind it, he didn't dare to step in. There was no issues with sending Long Feng in to scout the place first. If he returned, then fine. If not, they would have sufficient time to flee. Long Feng didn't reveal any changes in his expression as he approached the fog.
He paused before it and extended an arm in, only to sense an overwhelming chill rush up his spine. This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. The aura of resentment surged towards his arm, actually sucking out a tiny bit of his life source and trying to infiltrate his body. Long Feng quickly drew back his arm and stared at it with a frown.
The arm looked slightly shriveled after just a few seconds in the fog, and there were some drops of blood on it that didn't belong to him. His arm recovered almost instantly though, and the tiny vitality that was lost didn't matter to him at all. A thousand times more of that amount would need to be lost to truly affect his life source. His vitality after tempering his body to the peak Imperial realm was far greater than that of anyone else here.
He was able to recover instantly, but he didn't know if the same would apply to them. Even Long Feng couldn't help but hesitate greatly, unwilling to enter this place. It was simply too unusual for his heart to be calm.
"Long Feng! Are you trying to defy my…"
"Shut the hell up!" Long Feng cut Ren Ji off coldly and glared at the latter who was startled before abruptly walking into the dense fog. Everyone's expressions tightened and Ren Ji didn't even bother about Long Feng's reaction as they waited for any signs of movement or something to signal danger. A minute passed, then another, then a third. Nearly ten minutes passed and all of them were extremely tense, ready to flee at any moment.
All of a sudden, the fog before them churned violently and Long Feng walked out calmly. His robes were drenched in blood and even his hair was glued to his body by thick blood, but it clearly didn't belong to him. There wasn't a scar on him and his energy was stable as he approached them. The blood soaked robes gave him a strangely eerie appearance, causing the four youths to retreat as he approached.
"W-what did you find?" Ren Ji asked in as much of a stable voice as he could form.
"Buildings. Corpses. More blood. Nothing else." Long Feng responded. Ren Ji instantly looked suspicious.
"You didn't hover around here briefly before coming back out, did you?"
"Why don't you all come in and take a look?" He stepped aside, making way for them to pass. After a great hesitation, Ren Ji agreed to go into the fog. Even then, he asked Long Feng to take the lead. Long Feng expressionlessly went ahead, vanishing into the fog again. To those behind him, it looked like the fog had swallowed him whole. They swallowed loudly before they followed. Instantly, their expressions changed as a terrifying chill surrounded them, stealing tiny portions of their vitality.
A sense of terror gripped them as their blood circulation slowed down drastically.
"What's this?" Hua Zhi exclaimed as he formed a true essence shield around his body.
"So much resentment!" Chen Zhaofeng gasped as he also protected himself. Even with their protection, they couldn't do much about their vanishing vitality. They could only prevent the aura from invading their bodies. Long Feng stood by the side, watching them calmly. The first time he entered, he was just as overwhelmed as they were now, trying different methods to keep the resentment at bay. But then his demon energy began to surge, directly devouring the resentment.
Right now, he was standing without any protection, allowing the aura of resentment to stream into his body for his demon intent to devour. Compared to the other four who were extremely conspicuous within the fog, he was nearly invisible due to the lack of any energy fluctuation from his being.
"Damn it!" Ren Ji stared ahead and gritted his teeth, unwilling to ever return here again.
"Let's move ahead and get this over with! Long Feng, scout ahead!" Long Feng rushed ahead. Due to the extraordinarily dense blood fog, moving was akin to walking in a sea of blood. They were all drenched in blood within minutes, causing their hearts to fill with unease. Long Feng was relatively calm as he spread his soul power to observe his surroundings. The amount of corpses on the ground made him pale all over again.
They were practically stacked upon each other, rotting and releasing an awful stench into the air. The blood fog severely restricted their sights, and even his soul power was suppressed to less than half it's range, and the deeper they went, the greater the suppression.
"The formations in here are mostly untouched. It's like they were never activated and the core of the clan simply gave themselves up to be slaughtered." Long Feng observed.
"Where exactly are we headed to?" Hua Zhi couldn't help but ask.
"Our destination is the central building, where the clan chief should have been. If we want clues, that's where we should check." Ren Ji replied. Long Feng listened without interrupting, walking tens of meters ahead of them.
"We're not far from the palace." He curtly stated, afraid that they would be tempted try to flee soon.
"What can you see, Long Feng?" Ren Ji questioned. Long Feng rolled his eyes and couldn't be bothered to reply. How could he possibly see anything when they couldn't? The all pervasive blood fog had restricted their eye sights to just a few meters ahead of them. They couldn't even see each other. The only thing he could do was sense a few meters ahead using his soul power. But it was currently too weak to sense anything worth mentioning.
"See…?" He suddenly froze and facepalmed himself.
"How could I forget!" He stood still while his mind churned, rapidly recalling the specific details of this exact technique. A few seconds later, his eyes glimmered as he smiled.
"It's been so long I forgot it even existed." He lifted his head and swept his gaze around, before muttering, "Immortal's Sight." A faint silver glow surfaced from the depths of his pupils. At once, he exuded a faintly different presence than before, but the change was too subtle for even him to notice. His vision improved by over ten times, and even the dense fog might as well not exist. Those silver glow looked like they could peer through anything and everything.
Moreover, his soul power perception and range suddenly increased, surpassing the normal limit. Everything within half a mile appeared in his mind, including the structure of the entire Teng clan.
"Hey! Long Feng! Stop standing around and keep moving! If you stop one more time, I'll relay to the deacons that you contributed nothing and you won't get a share of the reward!" Ren Ji shouted with a dark expression as they closed the distance again. His only comfort was sensing Long Feng tens of meters away, scouting the way for them. Whenever Long Feng paused, his heart would shiver uncontrollably, wondering if there was danger ahead.
Long Feng heard Ren Ji's words and glanced back casually, his silver pupils focusing on Ren Ji. At the same time, he tried something else, driving his soul power into the technique. Ren Ji's body instantly trembled as he felt a soul chilling wind blow over him. His clothes, flesh and bones were completely non existent as a gaze seemed to pierce directly into his soul. The surroundings blurred as his soul was helplessly drawn into the soul dimension without being able to put up the slightest resistance.
Within the soul dimension, Ren Ji's eyes were colored with terror as he stared at the pair of emotionless silver eyes in the sky gazing down at him with an indescribable presence. An otherworldly pressure enclosed the soul dimension, causing his soul to feel infinitely tiny, as though the eye could exterminate him with a thought. The pair of eyes merely lasted for a split second before it vanished and the soul dimension crumbled.
All of this took a mere millisecond in reality, yet Ren Ji's entire body was drenched in cold sweat.
"W-what was that…?!" He didn't even realize that he was still alive while the eyes were staring at him. His body collapsed to the ground with a weakness that stemmed from his very soul as he breathed with tremendous difficulty.
"Ren Ji!" The others were extremely confused as they watched him sprawled on the ground, gasping for breath. One moment he was speaking to Long Feng and the next moment, he was laying down and staring at the sky with a terror only he could understand.
"What's wrong?" Chen Zhaofeng asked with caution, wondering if there was a threat nearby. Ren Ji slowly returned to his senses and struggled back to his feet before forcing an ugly smile to his face.
"It's nothing." He uttered in a hazy tone. The others stared at him with different thoughts as they continued moving.
