Qiu Yushi narrowed his eyes at Long Feng, knowing that his words might've not been heard. He stared deeply at the latter and didn't say anything more, simply walking away, vanishing down the peak. Long Feng continued his mindless walk, stumbling down the mountain and choosing a direction instinctively.
The head warden held Bai Zijun's corpse in his arms and paused at the back of the outer peak mountain, in a restricted area where several tombstones rose. He walked past many tombs without glancing at them, keeping his eyes straight ahead. He only right before three tombs that were extremely close together. The writings on two of the tombstones were blurry due to time, but the third one was in pristine condition, as though it was only placed recently. And the name written on it was none other than Bai Lixi.
The head warden stared at the three tombs for a full minute before he suddenly dropped to his knees, making a dull sound that echoed throughout the surroundings. He then laid the corpse in his arms down before the tombs slowly while lowering his head.
"Brother… I am sorry. I have failed you, and failed your family. I don't know how I can ever face you…" He murmured in a sorrowful voice. He kept his head lowered, staring at Bai Zijun's corpse till tears welled up in his eyes.
"I've failed you, Zijun. I'm sorry…" He clenched his fists till his nails pierced his skin and drew blood.
"I'm so useless… I know that I'm a spineless coward. I had him in my hands… I could simply clench my fists and avenge you both… yet I didn't dare to. I have let you down…" he closed his eyes while a two drops of tears rolled out of his eyes. He gingerly extended his arm to caress Bai Zijun's disfigured face, the shivered as he sensed the three energies still within his body. His arms shivered as his eyes flared with endless chill and hatred.
"I won't let you two die in vain… I promise you all, I will make sure he dies without a proper burial!" Vast murderous aura surged out of his body, clouding the entire graveyard. After he made that promise, he suddenly reigned in all that aura and clenched his fists again.
"But I can't let anyone find out… not even a rumor. I'll find a way to kill him, make him pay." He suddenly paused and looked up abruptly with a glint in his eyes.
"What did they say… he has the Dao heart…" he had already given up on wondering how it was possible. He simply accepted it as it was.
"Zijun must've gotten the Dao heart… that brat sneak attacked him and took it! That's right! This sword wound pierced through Zijun's body, so it must've been a sneak attack from behind…" his eyes began to burn with endless flames again.
"That bastard… he thinks he can walk away scot free after taking your fortune and killing you? Hmph!" He stood up and began to pace around, deep in thought.
"He will definitely try for the inner peak test in a month. It'll be fine if he fails… I can take my time and plot his perfect death. But If he succeeds, then things will get extremely difficult…" Even as the head warden of the outer peak, his status still wasn't equal to those of inner peak disciples. True, he was stronger than any inner peak disciple, but he would still have to lower his head before any of them. And to kill an inner disciple?
He would be crippled of his cultivation and treated to the most terrifying torture in the sect for years. The mere thought of that torture sent shivers down his spine. Did you know this text is from a different site? Read the official version to support the creator.
"He definitely wouldn't succeed… but in the off chance that he does become an inner peak disciple, then he'll become untouchable to me in normal means." He frowned, then grinned.
"The Dao heart is a treasure like no other. Not even I am truly sure of it's abilities, but who cares! If he becomes an inner disciple, then I'll spread the news of the Dao heart! I'll make sure all those top inner peak disciples who have gone through a few refinement stages would hear about it. They would absolutely kill to get their hands on anything that'll increase their chances of reaching the Dao realm, especially the Dao heart of a former powerful Dao realm master!" He smiled widely at this genius plan.
It would be fine if Long Feng failed to become an inner peak disciple. The head warden would have several ways of killing him outside the sect. One such methods was the mandatory monthly missions… But if Long Feng passed the test, then the head warden would essentially have to lower his head whenever they crossed path.
"It's unfortunate that I can't head to his pavilion and dig out his heart right now! Even without thinking, it would be clear that I did it, and that man doesn't care about reason. A single rumor is enough…" he shook his head and returned to kneel before the three tombs.
"Brother, Little Lixi, Zijun, I have already failed you all. But I swear, I will end that brat's life no matter what! I, Bai Xingsheng, swear on my Dao heart that I will avenge you! If I don't, then my Dao will crumble and I will lose my entire life worth of cultivation!" He swore viciously. Several minutes later, he dug up a hole and buried Bai Zijun's corpse before filling it up with sand.
After that, he stood there in silence for the entire day, staring at the four tombs with blood dripping from his clenched fists.
Long Feng walked for over two hours, shaking, staggering but never falling till he finally reached his pavilion. The several formations around didn't activate as he approached and pushed open the door. The moment he closed the door, he directly collapsed on the floor while the last bits of his consciousness drifted into darkness.
Days passed and the outer peak remained rather calm. The events of the Dao Heaven Hall remained hidden while Bai Zijun's death was revealed to be in the hands of a powerful deity level beast. While shocking to all the disciples, it was easier to believe and accept. As for those who actually knew what happened, they couldn't help but still feel shaken from the disbelief.
Many of them went into seclusion to digest the opportunities they got in the mystic realm, and in the next several days, the new deities solidified their foundations while forming their own true essence. Shocking, yet another new deity was born six days later, sending ripples throughout the outer peak. As for the original top ten deities, now reduced to nine, they all began to prepare for the inner peak test.
Each and everyone of them vigorously trained, returning to their peak states and even spared with each other occasionally to exchange pointers. As for Long Feng, no one heard anything about him any longer since he left the Dao Heaven Hall. It was as if he had died, but the defenses around his pavilion were still active. The deities didn't think he was dead though. Judging by the amount of injuries in his body, it made sense that he would seclude himself for so long.
In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if it took him a quarter of a year to heal completely. Two weeks passed since the serene heaven mystic realm closed, and the inner peak test was only two weeks away. The current generation of top ten geniuses were preparing to leave, allowing the new generation to take over. And in these two weeks, one more peak Imperial broke through his bottleneck and became a deity. And several more deities were sure to appear.
Over all, while the quality of the deities might not compare to the current generation, their quantity was likely to surpass them. None of that concerned Long Feng, who was only just opening his eyes for the first time in two weeks. He groaned as he blinked repeatedly to offset the brightness of the light in his eyes, then felt as though a stone was resting upon his forehead, causing great pain in his head. Another groan escaped his lips when he tried to move.
In addition to his extremely sore and weak limbs, his chest erupted with a pain that has been brewing for the past two weeks. It was so sharp and sudden that Long Feng's mind went blank for several seconds while pained scream left his mouth. His breathing became ragged as he lay there in silence while his memories rushed back at once.
"The head warden…" he murmured, narrowing his eyes. The immense killing intent he sensed from that man was overwhelming. For a second, he thought he was already dead back then. To think he didn't die in the end? Not even Long Feng could understand why the man didn't kill him.
"I can't let down my guard nor can I trust him at all. His killing intent was real enough. Even if there's a reason why he didn't kill me then, I don't believe that he's simply going to forget about this." He deduced, feeling helpless at the existence of such a huge threat. The head warden was a mid stage Dao realm master for crying out loud! He could kill Long Feng with the flick of a finger.
"Killing Bai Zijun really was a bit reckless…" Long Feng laughed and instantly flinched at the sharp pain that tore through his chest.
"When he held my neck, I really thought that was the day I finally got myself killed…" he couldn't help but giggle amidst the pain. He quickly focused and sensed the current situation of his body.
"Not good… all the minor injuries have recovered, except for my mangled meridians from using the true essence and the shattered ribcage…" he frowned slightly. These two injuries alone were enough to make life miserable.
"My Dantian is even drier than before. I'll have to heal my meridians before I can think about refining any energy, and my priority is to consolidate my foundation to avoid any future issues."
"As for my chest… the broken bones have actually regrown. They'll fully heal soon. But the shards of the broken pieces are still stuck in my body, causing so much pain. I need to get rid of them. I also don't know how long I've been unconscious for, but it won't be short. I don't know if I can still make it in time for the inner peak test." He sighed. While he was unconscious, his body had continuously healed everything it could, greatly shortening the time he required to heal.
If he had a full month, he was sure he would return to his peak state.
"If I wait to heal normally, it could take two or three months. I remember that I still have over two hundred heaven runes as well as hundreds of low grade essence stones. That should be more than enough to get some good healing pills and herbs to hasten my healing." He fumbled around his void ring and found his identity token before struggling to his feet, enduring the great pain in his chest.
"Let's find out how long I've spent and how much time I still have to prepare for the test, if any at all." He breathed out before pushing open the door and walking out. The sun hung in the sky, painting the world in light. Long Feng felt the sun on his face and some of the bone white paleness on his face reduced slightly. He smiled and backed in the sunlight for a minute before he slowly headed towards the shop near the peak, all the while keeping his guards up as much as he possibly could.
