One soldier went down immediately, and the second creature raised its weapon toward the civilians before anyone nearby could intercept it. Draeven reached them first. His sword caught the strike. "Your arm?"

"Temporarily unavailable."

"Nii-sama."

"I can still cast."

"That was not my question."

"It was the useful answer." Ruruka stared at me for another second, her expression tightening in the way it always did whenever she wanted to argue but knew somebody else currently required stabbing. "He also has damaged ribs, overstrained pathways, mana exhaustion, and whatever stupidity causes him to answer medical questions like that." I looked toward her.

"That last one may be congenital." Ruruka stared at both of us. Then she smacked me on the top of the head. Before Ria could react, Ruruka leaned over and hit her too. Ria's crimson eyes widened.

"Excuse me?"

"That was for making me watch the two of you nearly die repeatedly," Ruruka said, folding her arms after administering justice.

"Neither of you gets to complain." I looked toward Ria. Ria looked toward me. For once, we reached the same conclusion immediately. Neither of us complained. Vael and Seris approached a short while later, moving considerably more slowly than Ruruka had. Vael's armor had been cut open across one shoulder, while Seris had lost her original weapon somewhere during the final engagement and now carried a short Velmoran blade that clearly belonged to someone else.

Seris stopped when she saw us sitting beside the barricade. Her gaze moved over Ria, then me, then Ruruka standing over both of us like an irritated nurse.

"I assume congratulations are premature," Seris said.

"Very," Ruruka replied. Vael's mouth moved faintly, but whatever response he intended disappeared when his attention shifted farther down the avenue. Draeven had not followed them. "Yes," she answered. Draeven's gaze remained on Morcant.

"He would have complained that it took us this long." The sound Seris made began as a laugh. It broke halfway through. She covered her mouth, but that did nothing to stop the tears that had already started falling. Vael lowered his head beside her, his grip tightening around his sword while his face struggled to remain composed. Ria slowly knelt opposite Draeven. For several moments, she simply looked at Morcant. Then she reached forward. Her fingers brushed carefully across his face before closing his eyes.

Draeven watched the motion without speaking.

"What happens now?" he eventually asked. Ria looked toward him. Draeven finally raised his head, and there was almost nothing left of the commander who had stood beside the throne. "After that, the dead are honored. The civilians will be given somewhere safe to stay, and the Guild's shelter terms remain exactly what they were before this battle." Draeven listened with his head lowered. Ria continued, her tone calm but firm.

"Those who want to remain together will be allowed to remain together. Those who want to leave will not be treated as traitors. Those who want nothing to do with Velmora anymore will be allowed to choose that too." Draeven's eyes closed briefly.

"And me?" Ria's expression hardened, but there was no cruelty in it.

"After the wounded are safe and Morcant is buried, you will answer for what you did." Draeven nodded once.

"I expected that."

"You are not absolved because you helped us in the final minutes," Ria told him.

"People died because of your decisions, and fear does not erase responsibility."

"I know." Ria studied him before continuing.

"But I will not decide your fate today simply because I am angry enough to want an easy answer. I have had enough rulers deciding what everyone else deserves without asking them." "He would have told everyone he personally defeated Draeven, saved the kingdom, saved Earth, and probably carried all of us home afterward." A weak breath escaped Vael that might have been a laugh.

"He would have added ten enemies every time he told it."

"Twenty."

"By next year, fifty." Seris wiped her cheek.

"And somehow he would still insist the story was accurate." Ria closed her eyes. Draeven lowered his head. Nobody spoke for a while after that. Morcant had spent his final moments making sure everyone else understood what Velmora needed. The least we could give him was silence. Eventually, the healers found us. "This is not the time to defend your wife's title!" Ria slowly turned toward me.

"You are correcting my title during a national emergency?"

"The emergency is mostly over."

"That does not improve your decision." Kurose looked between the two of us, then toward the ruined skyline. His face became increasingly concerned.

"How dangerous is your household?" I considered the question. Aaron immediately pointed at him.

"Do not ask that." Probably wise. Then three much smaller problems broke through the cluster of Guild personnel.

"PAPA!" Hikari reached me first. The healers had done nothing to prepare my ribs for her. She collided with my stomach at full speed, and whatever sound left my mouth caused Ria's head to snap toward me. Ruri arrived immediately behind her with panic across her face.

"Papa, did Hikari hurt you?"

"No." My ribs disagreed. I ignored them. Karin reached us next, saw the bandages across my torso, and went from relieved to furious in approximately half a second.

"You got hurt again!"

"Technically, I never stopped being hurt."

"That is worse!" Ruri carefully took my right hand between both of hers. She waited for my fingers to move, and when nothing happened, her expression became frighteningly similar to Ria's whenever I attempted to hide an injury.

"Papa cannot move his hand."

"Temporary." Ruri looked directly into my eyes. I had been judged. Karin crossed her arms.

"You said you were going to stop doing stupid things after we found you."

"I stopped destroying buildings." Karin immediately pointed toward the skyline.

"There are fewer buildings!"

"Those were mostly the Sovereign."

"Mostly?!" I decided not to continue that line of argument. Hikari raised both arms toward me.

"Hikari wants up." I looked at my ribs. Then at my immobilized right arm. Then toward Ria. She smiled. The woman had no mercy. I bent carefully and lifted Hikari with my left arm. She settled against my chest, tiny spoon still clutched in one hand, and studied my face with enough seriousness that I briefly wondered whether she was about to diagnose me herself.

"Papa hurts?"

"A little." Hikari frowned. Then she kissed my cheek.

"Hikari heals Papa." I looked toward Ruri.

"Medical opinion?" Ruri thought carefully before answering.

"Probably not." Hikari gasped as though betrayed. Karin started laughing. Ria covered her mouth, shoulders shaking. Even Aaron turned away. The world was probably going to survive. The evacuation finally began moving properly once the last unstable areas were sealed. Draeven remained with Morcant. Vael stayed beside him with the damaged sword. Seris refused to leave either of them alone. Ria and I followed more slowly. "You needed legal guardianship. School records, medical authority, emergency documents. Being married solved everything without us explaining why three children appeared in my apartment one morning." Ria watched me quietly. I looked down at the ring around my finger. It was scratched now. Probably from the fight.

"But somewhere along the way," I continued, "I stopped thinking of it as paperwork." Ria's crimson eyes widened slightly. This was considerably worse than fighting the Sovereign. At least the Sovereign had been predictable. Mostly.

"I know we are already married," I said. Ria raised one eyebrow.

"An excellent start to a proposal."

"I'm working on it."

"You fought an artificial king with more confidence."

"That required less emotional preparation." The corner of her mouth moved. Good. Maybe. I breathed out slowly and looked directly at her.

"I don't want us to stay married because the girls needed signatures." The faint amusement disappeared from Ria's face. I continued before cowardice became persuasive.

"I want you complaining about my laundry. I want you stealing the blanket and pretending you didn't. I want breakfast arguments, school pickups, Guild problems, Karin setting something on fire, Hikari asking questions nobody should ever ask, and Ruri worrying about everyone while pretending she isn't." Ria's eyes had become wet. That made this much harder. Still, I kept going.

"I want ordinary days with you. Annoying days. Boring days. Days where nothing tries to destroy the world and the biggest problem we have is deciding what to eat." Ria swallowed. I looked toward her and felt my remaining courage rapidly approaching zero.

"I want you there because you want to be there," I said.

"Not because we needed a legal solution." For several seconds, the only sound between us came from emergency vehicles farther down the avenue. Then I asked the question.

"Can we make it real?" Ria stared at me. Her eyes widened. Then narrowed. Then became suspicious again. Apparently my proposal had several stages.

"Ren Arclight," she said slowly, "did you wait until both of us were covered in blood to ask me this?"

"When you phrase it that way, it sounds poorly planned."

"It was poorly planned."

"Probably." Ria started walking toward me. I briefly wondered whether the proposal had failed badly enough that she intended violence. Then she stopped directly in front of me and raised both hands. Her palms settled against my face. I froze. Ria's thumbs rested carefully beneath my eyes, avoiding the bruises and dried blood. The anger had disappeared completely from her expression, leaving something far more dangerous behind. Affection.

"You truly are an unbelievable fool," Ria whispered.

"That doesn't sound encouraging."

"Be quiet." Reasonable. Then Ria kissed me. Her lips met mine softly at first, almost cautiously, before her fingers tightened gently against my face. The entire ruined city seemed to disappear for several seconds, along with the pain in my ribs, the useless arm hanging against my chest, and every intelligent thought I had ever possessed. Apparently kissing was significantly more effective than healing magic. Potentially worth researching.

When Ria finally pulled away, she stayed close enough that our foreheads almost touched. Color had reached her cheeks and the tips of her ears, while tears remained bright enough in her crimson eyes that pretending they were not there would have been insulting.

"I already married you, dumbass," Ria said. I stared at her. There were probably several intelligent responses available. None arrived. Ria smiled faintly and brushed one thumb across my cheek.

"You gave me somewhere to return to when I thought I had lost everything. You gave me three daughters who decided I was their mother before I understood what being a mother meant. You gave me your name, your trust, your terrible habits, and enough paperwork to make me reconsider whether conquering countries was actually easier."

"The paperwork wasn't entirely my fault." Ria gently squeezed my face. I stopped talking.

"So if you are asking whether I want this marriage to become real," she continued, voice trembling despite the smile on her face, "you are several months too late." Something tightened painfully in my chest. Probably not the ribs this time. Ria looked directly into my eyes.

"You better make me happy for the rest of our lives." For once, there was nothing to hide behind. No sarcasm. No excuse. No magic.

"I will." Ria's smile softened.

"Good." We remained there for a few breaths, close enough that neither of us seemed interested in moving yet. Smoke drifted slowly through the avenue behind her, and the distant voices of our daughters carried from farther down the road. Objectively, this had been a terrible time to propose. I had one functional arm. Several questionable ribs. Ria had nearly exhausted the portion of her core I had released. The city was damaged. Morcant was dead. Draeven still had consequences waiting for him.

This was not remotely romantic. Which made the next question important. I leaned closer toward Ria's ear.

"Was proposing while on the brink of death cool?" She became completely motionless. Very slowly, Ria pulled back enough to look at me. Her expression moved through disbelief, irritation, affection, and what appeared to be a serious reconsideration of the marriage she had just accepted emotionally.

"Only you could think of that." I considered the answer carefully.

"So moderately cool?" Ria's eyes narrowed.

"Ren."

"Right." Karin's voice suddenly carried down the ruined avenue before Ria could decide whether to murder me.

"PAPA! MAMA! WHY ARE YOU TAKING SO LONG?!" We both turned. Farther ahead, Karin stood beside Ruruka with both hands cupped around her mouth. Ruri immediately grabbed one of her wrists and looked mortified.

"Karin, stop yelling!" Ruri scolded.

"They can hear you!"

"That makes it worse!" Karin shouted back.

"They can hear me and they're still standing there!" Hikari bounced beside them and waved the tiny spoon over her head.

"Mama! Papa! Hikari is waiting!" Ruruka looked toward us. Then her gaze dropped toward how close Ria and I were standing. Her expression changed. Slowly. Oh no. She smiled. I knew that smile. Ria noticed it too.

"We should leave immediately," she muttered.

"Agreed." Ruruka raised her voice from farther down the street.

"Nii-sama! Did Ria just kiss you?"

"No," I called back. Ria turned her head toward me. I reconsidered.

"Yes." Ruruka's laughter echoed across the ruined avenue. Ria covered her face with one hand, and I made the strategic decision not to mention that her ears had become bright red again. Eventually, she lowered her hand. Her eyes moved toward the girls. Ruri was attempting to convince Karin to stop shouting. Karin was not listening. Hikari continued waving the spoon while calling for us, and Ruruka looked far too pleased with the situation. Something gentle settled across Ria's face. She reached toward my left hand.

Her fingers slipped between mine and held on.

"Our daughters are waiting for us," Ria said. I looked toward them. Three years ago, I had retired because I believed I was finished saving things. I wanted a quiet apartment, enough money to avoid working too often, food, sleep, and enough free time to watch anime without civilization becoming my responsibility. Apparently, I had misunderstood retirement. Somewhere along the way, three dragon daughters had appeared on my doorstep. The Demon Queen I sealed had become my wife.

My younger sister had become an increasingly aggressive babysitter, Aaron had refused to stop calling me Master, and the remnants of a kingdom I once fought now knew where I lived. There was also a concerning amount of property damage. Objectively, my life had become much more complicated. Probably more expensive. I looked at Ria beside me, then toward Ruri trying to restrain Karin while Hikari bounced impatiently between them. For most of my life, power had been simple. Enough mana solved problems.

Enough control defeated spells. Enough strength stopped enemies. Home had never worked that way. There was no formula for becoming Papa. No spell for making someone choose to stay. No technique that could force three children to trust me, or make a former Demon Queen look at a ruined apartment and decide it belonged to her too. It happened quietly. Breakfast after breakfast. Argument after argument. Ordinary day after ordinary day.

Until somehow the place I had once considered nothing more than somewhere to sleep had become the one thing I would destroy kingdoms to protect. Ria squeezed my hand. I squeezed back. Karin shouted again from farther ahead, "PAPA!" Ruri groaned loudly enough for us to hear.

"Karin, please stop!" Hikari immediately joined her sister instead.

"Papa hurry! Hikari is hungry!" Ria laughed softly beside me. I sighed. Then we started walking toward them together, our hands still interlaced as the distance between us and our daughters slowly disappeared.

"Coming," I called.
