Seris stood over the tactical display with one hand resting against the edge of the table, her fingertips tapping once against the metal before falling still. The usual hint of amusement around her eyes had disappeared sometime during the last five minutes. She traced one of the newest fracture markers without touching the screen. Violet light reflected across her face from the map, joining the occasional flashes coming through the command vehicle's windows whenever one of the remaining breaches outside pulsed.

"They're building it," Seris said at last. Her voice was quiet enough that nobody needed to be told to listen. The silence afterward was not peaceful. Outside the command vehicle, northwestern Saitama still looked like the battle might begin again if anyone breathed too loudly. Emergency lamps rotated over shattered storefronts, overturned buses, and the broken sections of Guild barrier scattered across the avenue.

Their red and white lights swept across black crystal embedded in the asphalt, making the remnants of dead monsters glisten like wet stone. The people who had survived the fighting looked only slightly better. Hunters rested wherever medics had found enough space to sit them down. Some leaned against ruined vehicles with weapons still across their knees, while others stared blankly at the fractured sky as healers worked around them.

A few had enough mana left to help stabilize the barricades, although the tremors in their arms made it obvious they should not have been standing. The Velmoran volunteers were mixed among them now. A demon soldier sat with his back against a cracked concrete divider while a human healer wrapped his forearm. Several meters away, a Velmoran woman held a bottle to the lips of a shield-user whose hands were shaking too badly to grip it.

Neither pair seemed particularly interested in what the other person had been three years ago. Yesterday, either sight might have drawn weapons. Tonight, nobody had enough energy left to find it strange. The fighting had slowed. The war had not. Inside the mobile command vehicle, exhaustion looked different. Aaron still wore both reinforced gauntlets, dried black blood filling the grooves between their plates.

One side of his coat had been torn almost to the waist, while a shallow cut near his temple had dried without anybody successfully convincing him that medical care also applied to Guild Masters. Hasegawa had at least accepted a bandage across her cheek. She stood on the opposite side of the tactical table with both hands braced against the console, her eyes following the pattern Seris had uncovered.

Matsuda stood beside her, looking as though he had decided the blood on his collar probably belonged to a monster and therefore did not require further investigation. Ruruka occupied the rear corner of the vehicle with her sword across her knees. She had retied her ponytail after the fight, although loose strands of dark hair still clung to her forehead while she cleaned black residue from the blade. Ria stood beside me.

Her silver hair had lost most of its usual neatness, and black monster blood marked one sleeve of her coat. She had not bothered wiping it away. Her crimson eyes remained fixed on the map instead, following every line Vael and Seris had drawn. Vael had stripped most of the ordinary city information from the display. Roads and district boundaries had disappeared first, followed by evacuation zones and building markers, until only spatial positions remained. Seven anchor sites glowed around the outer perimeter.

The active fractures formed a rough inner ring. Smaller markers showed where the coordinator creatures had appeared during the battle. At first, those positions had looked meaningless. Then Seris connected them according to an old Velmoran deployment pattern. The chaos became geometry. What bothered me was that the geometry was incomplete. Several lines curved toward the same empty region without reaching it. Others ended abruptly, leaving spaces wide enough for more fractures or more deployment points.

The creatures attacking the cities had not merely poured through whatever openings became available. They had been occupying positions. Aaron studied the pattern for another few seconds before looking toward Ria. His expression had become more tired since the last time I looked at him, although his voice remained steady when he spoke.

"You called this a sovereign approach," Aaron said. He glanced once toward Seris's connected lines before returning his attention to Ria.

"I would appreciate the complete version before another piece of the apocalypse introduces itself." Ria placed one hand lightly against the table. Her fingertips stopped near the blank center of the pattern, but she did not touch the glowing lines.

"A sovereign approach was never merely a road," Ria explained.

"Important Velmoran command installations could be removed from ordinary physical coordinates. During war, that allowed the command structure to remain unreachable even if an enemy captured the surrounding territory." Hasegawa leaned slightly closer to the display. The bandage on her cheek pulled when she frowned, but she ignored it.

"The route itself was hidden?" Hasegawa asked.

"Divided," Ria corrected.

"The approach would be separated across several spatial layers. An enemy could reach the first section and still find nothing beyond it because the next section did not occupy the same physical location." Vael stepped closer and expanded one of the outer anchor routes. The fresh bandages around his ribs had already darkened beneath his torn coat, but he remained standing with the stubborn dignity of somebody who apparently considered chairs a personal insult.

"Under normal circumstances, the command structure opened the approach from within," Vael said. He traced the path from the blank center outward, making the intended direction obvious.

"Someone already inside would authorize each layer until the entire route aligned." Matsuda folded his arms while studying the expanded section.

"Draeven is doing the opposite." Vael nodded.

"Exactly. The seven anchors are forcing the layers inward from outside the command structure. Every synchronized pulse brings their coordinates closer together." Matsuda stared at the map for a moment longer.

"Seven roads stacked on top of one another." Seris slowly turned toward him.

"That is an offensively crude description," she said. Her expression suggested she had suffered personally from the sentence. Matsuda looked back without apology.

"Can I understand it?"

"Unfortunately."

"Then it works." Seris narrowed her eyes.

"Your standards upset me." Matsuda glanced down at his damaged uniform.

"I was thrown through a convenience store tonight. My standards have adjusted." A faint sound escaped Ruruka from the rear of the vehicle. Matsuda looked toward her. Ruruka immediately lowered her head and resumed cleaning her sword with suspicious concentration. Aaron closed his eyes briefly. He looked like a man reconsidering every professional decision that had eventually placed him inside a strategy meeting with three former members of a demon kingdom. Then Aaron looked toward me. He did not ask anything.

He simply waited. Annoying habit. Also deserved. I had already started checking. Spatial Awareness expanded beyond the command vehicle and slipped through the damaged district. The city stopped being a city the moment ordinary perception became irrelevant. Buildings became fixed coordinates. Roads became measured distance. The remaining fractures became places where direction and location had stopped agreeing with each other. Beneath everything, the seven anchors pulsed. Forty-one seconds. Pause. Forty-one seconds.

Pause. Separate structures behaving like organs inside one body. Now that I knew what I was searching for, the sovereign approach became much easier to recognize. That did not make it pleasant. Seven currents of distorted space curved inward across the region. One carried the spatial imprint of Saitama. Another intersected from Chiba. A third passed through coordinates connected to Tokyo, while the others crossed areas separated by kilometers without ever occupying the same physical layer. They overlapped.

They did not meet. It reminded me of several transparent maps stacked over one another, each carrying only a portion of the same route. Draeven was forcing all of them into alignment. I withdrew Spatial Awareness before the synchronized pressure decided my damaged pathways looked like a promising eighth route.

"He's overlapping coordinates," I said, pointing toward the blank center of the map.

"The road already exists. It just exists in several places at once." Aaron's eyes sharpened.

"Can you reach wherever they converge?"

"Probably." Ruruka immediately stopped cleaning her sword. She slowly raised her head and gave me an expression that suggested the word had offended her personally.

"Nii-sama, you say 'probably' the same way normal people say 'absolutely.'" Ruruka rested the cloth across her knee and stared at me.

"Those are very different levels of confidence."

"That sounds complimentary."

"It wasn't."

"I'm keeping it." Ria turned toward me next. Her crimson eyes narrowed slightly before she asked, "Ren, can you force those separate layers together before Draeven completes the approach himself?" I studied the routes again.

"Probably." Ria's expression became flatter. I sighed.

"More probably than the first probably." Aaron stared at me with the exhausted disappointment of a teacher hearing a bad answer for the third time.

"That sentence contained no useful information."

"It contained optimism."

"It contained the same word twice," Aaron replied.

"Exactly. Twice the optimism." Ruruka rubbed her forehead.

"How have you survived twenty-seven years?"

"Skill." Ria answered at almost the same time.

"Luck." I turned toward her.

"You wound me." Ria's eyes dropped toward the blood already dried beneath my nose.

"You have demonstrated an impressive ability to accomplish that without assistance." Matsuda glanced toward Hasegawa.

"Is he always like this?" Hasegawa did not answer him. Instead, she looked toward Aaron as though the Guild Master might produce an official document proving my condition was chronic. Aaron looked toward the ceiling. Ria answered Matsuda with tired certainty.

"Yes."

"That was immediate," I said. Ria ignored me. Aaron raised one gauntleted hand before the conversation could turn into another national emergency.

"What happens if we destroy one of the anchors now?" Aaron asked. His expression had already returned to the map. That removed the humor. I looked back toward the network. The answer was straightforward. It was also terrible.

"Best case, one section of the approach collapses and the other six anchors absorb the displaced load," I said.

"The overall network becomes less stable, but it doesn't immediately fail." Hasegawa's eyes narrowed.

"You specifically said best case."

"Yes." Matsuda unfolded his arms.

"Then give us the worst one." I pointed toward the national displays still showing active fractures in several regions.

"The overlapping structure destabilizes while occupied spaces are still attached to it. That means breach zones, anchor chambers, and anything close enough to the boundaries when the layers separate." Aaron's jaw tightened.

"Anything meaning people."

"Potentially." Nobody spoke for a few seconds. A siren passed somewhere outside. Through the open doors, two medics hurried across the avenue carrying an injured Hunter between them while another group cleared debris from an evacuation route. Hasegawa looked toward the regional feeds.

"If an anchor collapses incorrectly, an active fracture could fold into a populated area."

"Or pull part of the populated area with it," I added. Matsuda swore quietly. Aaron stared at the seven anchor markers before exhaling.

"Then dismantling the network before controlling the convergence is unacceptable."

"Unless you're feeling adventurous." Aaron looked at me.

"Bad adventure," I clarified.

"I understood." Ria returned her gaze to the center of the map. Her expression remained composed, but I noticed the way her fingertips pressed more firmly against the edge of the table.

"Then we follow the road," Ria said. Nobody argued. The next question was who actually went. Aaron solved part of that before anybody volunteered.

"Hasegawa and Matsuda remain outside," he said.

"Tokyo and Chiba still have active manifestations. Neither regional command is disappearing into an unknown spatial corridor while the response network remains unstable." Hasegawa immediately frowned.

"You assume I intended to enter." Aaron met her gaze. Hasegawa stared back. Neither of them moved. Matsuda looked between them and apparently chose betrayal.

"She intended to enter," he said. Hasegawa slowly turned toward him. Matsuda immediately became deeply interested in one of the tactical screens. Seris smiled faintly. Hasegawa exhaled through her nose, visibly displeased that betrayal had happened so efficiently.

"Tokyo will maintain the eastern response and notify you immediately if the network changes." Matsuda nodded.

"Chiba will do the same." Aaron looked toward both Guild Masters.

"Good. I'll remain here and coordinate the national response."

"That sounded disappointingly responsible," I said. Aaron turned toward me.

"You should try it sometime."

"I do."

"Under coercion."

"Still counts." From the rear of the vehicle, Ruruka muttered, "Barely." I looked toward my sister. She immediately resumed cleaning her sword. Traitor. Aaron's attention shifted toward Kurose. Kurose had been leaning beside the open doors with one shoulder wrapped beneath his damaged combat uniform. He caught Aaron looking at him and immediately scowled.

"No," Kurose said. Aaron raised an eyebrow.

"I have not spoken."

"You were going to tell me to stay."

"I was." Kurose folded his arms.

"Then no." Aaron stared at him for several seconds before shaking his head.

"Impressive. You managed to disobey the order before I issued it." Kurose pushed away from the wall, frustration tightening his expression.

"You saw what came through those breaches. If Arclight is walking directly into the center of the network, he needs fighters." Aaron gestured toward the five of us.

"He has fighters." Kurose looked over the group with visible skepticism. His gaze passed from Ruruka to Ria, then moved toward Vael and Seris.

"He has his sister, his wife, and two demons." The command vehicle became quiet. Kurose noticed. Too late. Seris tilted her head, a pleasant smile appearing despite the exhaustion around her eyes.

"How flattering. Vael, apparently we have advanced from political refugees to military assets." Vael looked toward Seris with tired patience.

"I was already a military asset."

"You are ruining the moment." Kurose pinched the bridge of his nose.

"That was not what I meant."

"I know," Seris replied.

"That is why it was entertaining." Aaron glanced toward the ruined avenue outside and then back toward Kurose. Something changed in his expression, enough that Kurose stopped preparing whatever argument had been coming next.

"Kurose," Aaron said quietly.

"Look outside." Kurose followed his gaze. The combined defensive formation from the battle no longer existed as an organized line, but the people who had formed it were still scattered across the recovery zones. A human Hunter sat beside a Velmoran with both of their broken shields resting against the same concrete barrier. Neither spoke. They simply looked too exhausted to move anywhere else. A Guild healer was wrapping a demon soldier's forearm while another Velmoran held the medical bag open for her.

Several meters away, a support Hunter demonstrated how to use an emergency mana-restoration kit while two demons watched with tired concentration. Farther down the avenue sat Ardent's wielder. His curved sword rested across his knees. He happened to look toward the command vehicle. His crimson eyes met Kurose's. Neither smiled. Aaron stepped closer to the doorway.

"They need someone here who fought beside them." Kurose's expression shifted slightly.

"Hasegawa and Matsuda have regional commands," Aaron continued.

"I need somebody controlling this street whom the Hunters trust and the Velmorans have already watched bleed for them. If another wave comes, I don't want two formations deciding whether they should cooperate. I want one." Kurose looked outside again. A Guild medic had approached Ardent's wielder and was pointing firmly toward the stretcher beside him. The Velmoran shook his head. The medic pointed harder. Ardent's wielder responded with what appeared to be a very serious explanation.

The medic physically shoved him back against the car. Ardent's wielder looked deeply offended. Kurose's mouth twitched despite himself. Then he sighed.

"Damn it." Aaron almost smiled.

"Was that acceptance?" Kurose gave him an exhausted glare.

"That was resentment."

"It sounded suspiciously cooperative." Kurose jerked his chin toward the avenue.

"Call it whatever you want. I'm still complaining." Aaron nodded once.

"Excellent. Complain while holding the district." Kurose muttered something that would probably become a disciplinary issue under less apocalyptic circumstances. Aaron ignored him professionally. That left five of us. Me, Ria, Ruruka, Vael, and Seris. Small enough to move through unstable layered space without creating another logistical disaster. Dangerous enough that whatever waited at the other end should probably be at least mildly concerned. Aaron looked toward me last.

The irritation disappeared from his face.

"Master." That one word removed the humor from mine. Aaron had used the title plenty of times before. Usually he said it while irritated, or when he needed me to cooperate with something involving paperwork. This was different. Three years earlier, Aaron had watched Ruruka and me walk into the final battlefield of the Demon King Incident while every modern Hunter reading insisted whatever waited there should have killed us. He knew exactly how difficult I was to kill. That made the concern in his eyes worse.

"Come back," Aaron said. I held his gaze for a moment.

"That was already the plan." Aaron's expression did not soften.

"Make it a better plan than usual." I considered promising. That sounded irresponsible.

"No guarantees." Ruruka groaned behind me.

"Nii-sama."

"Fine. Reasonable guarantees." Aaron somehow looked less reassured. Probably fair. Before we approached the convergence point, Ria asked to pass through the Velmoran recovery area. The nineteen volunteers had been gathered near the western barricade. Several remained under active medical treatment. One man had his arm immobilized against his chest, while another was engaged in a losing argument with a Guild medic who refused to let him stand on an injured leg.

Talren stood nearby with a fresh bandage wrapped around his forehead. Nobody knelt when Ria approached. That had become one of the strangest signs of progress. Three years ago, most surviving Velmoran soldiers probably would have dropped to one knee before she reached speaking distance. Now they remained standing. Or sitting. Or lying on stretchers while arguing with human healers. Because Ria had asked them to. Talren noticed where our group had been heading. His expression tightened.

"Is it him?" Talren asked. Several nearby conversations faded as the other Velmorans looked toward Ria.

"Yes," Ria answered. Talren lowered his gaze toward the dried blood across his hands before speaking again.

"Commander Draeven held the western district for seventeen days after the capital fell. His forces were the reason thousands reached the migration corridors." Ria's face barely moved. The words landed anyway. An older Velmoran woman sat nearby with one arm secured in a sling. She hesitated before looking toward Ria.

"His soldiers found my daughters beneath the southern granaries," the woman said. Her voice wavered slightly as she remembered it.

"The roof collapsed during the retreat. We had been trapped beneath it for two days." A younger man beside her nodded. Heavy bandages wrapped his ribs beneath a torn shirt.

"Draeven kept the western route open after the royal command network disappeared," the younger survivor added.

"People followed his banners because there was nobody else left giving orders." Nobody said after you disappeared. Nobody needed to. Ria heard it anyway. Her fingers slowly curled against her palm. The older woman noticed the movement, and concern immediately crossed her face.

"Lady Ria, I did not mean to defend what he is doing now." Ria turned toward her.

"No. Do not take it back." The woman blinked. Ria stepped slightly closer, her crimson eyes moving across the wounded Velmorans around her. There was no anger in her expression now, only a painful kind of attention.

"If Draeven saved your daughters, remember that he saved them," Ria said.

"If he kept thousands alive after everything collapsed, remember that as well. Do not rewrite the man he was simply because you fear the man he has become." Talren's jaw tightened.

"And if the man who saved us is gone?" Talren asked. Ria looked toward him for several seconds before answering.

"Then we mourn him honestly." Talren swallowed. Something shifted across his face. Grief, probably. Maybe relief too. Ria looked toward the injured volunteers again and straightened.

"You have fought enough tonight. Remain here and protect the people beside you." Talren's eyes moved toward the humans receiving treatment across the barricade. Several hours earlier, the people beside you would have meant only Velmorans. Now it did not. He understood. Talren inclined his head. Not a bow to a queen. Just acknowledgement.

"Come back, Ria." She froze for the smallest moment. No Queen. No Majesty. No royal title. Just Ria. Her expression softened almost invisibly.

"I intend to." We returned to the middle of the ruined avenue. There was nothing visibly special about the convergence point. It looked like every other damaged section of the district: cracked asphalt, shattered windows, emergency lights, abandoned vehicles, and the pale glow of my Spatial Locks reflecting from the remaining fractures overhead. Ruruka looked around twice before turning toward me.

"So where exactly is this road?" I gestured vaguely toward the district.

"Everywhere." Ruruka stared. I added, "Technically."

"That did not make it better."

"It made it more accurate." Ria gave me a look. I sighed.

"Fine." I stepped into the center of the intersection and closed my eyes. Spatial Awareness expanded. The ordinary world disappeared. Seven routes moved beneath the region, each turning away from normal physical geography before intersecting the others at angles that should not have been possible. One carried the spatial echo of Saitama. Another intersected from Chiba. A third passed through coordinates connected to Tokyo. None of them met naturally. Something was forcing them together. I caught the nearest layer.

Then the second. Then the third. Pain crawled through the damaged pathways in my right arm almost immediately. Ignore.

"Spatial Interference." The avenue distorted. Ruruka inhaled sharply behind me while the streetlights stretched into pale vertical bands. Buildings duplicated, one copy remaining where it belonged while another slid several meters sideways through reality. The fractures above us multiplied into overlapping violet reflections. A Tokyo skyline shimmered through the buildings to our left. Chiba appeared beyond it. For one moment, an industrial district occupied the same location as a residential tower.

Seven pieces of Japan existed on top of one another. Even Vael looked unsettled. Seris slowly turned in place, watching incompatible cities overlap around her.

"I have seen convergence magic before, Ren, but never anything forced together like this." I tightened my hold on the first four routes.

"Congratulations." Seris looked toward me.

"That was not praise."

"Less congratulations." Ruruka pointed toward a duplicate building flickering several meters above us.

"Nii-sama, please stop making the city look haunted."

"Working on it." I pulled. Space resisted. Pain shot from my fingers toward my shoulder, hot enough to make two digits twitch without permission. The first three routes aligned, but the fourth slipped sideways the moment I caught the fifth. I dragged the fourth back. The sixth pulled against the second. The seventh tried separating everything. Very irritating.

"Stay where I put you," I muttered. Ria raised an eyebrow.

"Ren, are you threatening space?"

"It knows what it did." Ruruka sighed.

"Of course he is." I forced the final layers inward. This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere. The asphalt beneath us darkened. Not like shadow. Like absence. A strip of black stone emerged through the middle of the intersection, rising from somewhere that did not physically exist. Violet veins pulsed beneath its surface as the path extended farther than the avenue should have allowed. Then the first ruin appeared.

A stone arch materialized beside the road. Half of it was gone. Another structure followed: a broken wall, then the remains of a watchtower. Tattered banners appeared on poles that had never stood in Japan, their ruined cloth moving in a wind none of us could feel. The smell changed next. Smoke and engine fumes faded. Cold stone replaced them. Old ash. Damp earth. Something metallic. Behind me, Seris stopped breathing. Vael went completely still. Ria said nothing. I opened my eyes. The road stretched into darkness.

Pieces of another world stood along both sides. Ruruka stared past me, her earlier irritation disappearing completely.

"What is this?" Seris swallowed. The woman who could turn almost anything into a joke suddenly looked decades older.

"Home," Seris answered quietly. Ria stepped onto the black road first. Her boot touched the stone, and she remained there for a moment as if waiting to see whether the path would reject her. Nothing attacked. No alarm sounded. She took another step. Then another. The rest of us followed. Japan disappeared the moment we fully crossed. Not entirely. When I looked back, the ruined Saitama intersection remained visible through a wavering rectangular opening.

Aaron stood beyond it with Hasegawa, Matsuda, Kurose, and several Guild technicians watching us. But the road itself belonged somewhere else. Or perhaps nowhere. Beyond its edges there was no ground. Only darkness. Fragments of Velmora floated beside the path like memories that had forgotten what they were attached to. A staircase climbed toward nothing. Half of a courtyard hung in empty space without the palace it had once belonged to. A shattered statue stood embedded in black crystal, its face broken away.

Ruruka walked more slowly now. She had seen demonic ruins before. She had fought through ancient structures reconstructed inside dungeons. This was different. These were not ruins belonging to nameless people who had died centuries ago. Three people walking beside her remembered living here. Seris stopped near a broken roadside marker. Only half of the stone remained, but a faded emblem could still be seen beneath soot and cracks. Seris crouched and ran her fingertips over it with unexpected care.

"The western road," Seris said. Ria stopped several steps ahead. Her shoulders tightened. Vael looked toward the marker.

"Third district. This should have been near the old bridge." Seris nodded while clearing another layer of dust.

"The eastern support pillar would have been twenty paces from here." Ruruka glanced between both demons.

"You can recognize one broken road marker after three years?" Seris looked toward Ruruka with a faint smile. There was no humor inside it.

"I recognize it after thirty." Ria slowly walked back. She crouched beside Seris and brushed dust from one chipped corner of the marker. Her fingertips remained there for several seconds while something distant moved behind her eyes.

"There was a fruit stall beside this," Ria said. Seris turned toward her, and a little warmth returned to her expression.

"The old man who overcharged soldiers?" Ria looked mildly offended.

"He claimed armored boots damaged the bridge."

"He charged you more because you never checked prices."

"I checked." Seris raised one eyebrow.

"You once paid five silver for pears." Ria straightened slightly.

"They were good pears." Vael turned his head away. His mouth moved. Ruruka saw it.

"Commander Vael," Ruruka said, a small smile finally returning to her face, "were you laughing?" Vael immediately recovered his dignity.

"No. I was breathing." Seris looked delighted.

"You breathe with your mouth curved upward?"

"Occasionally." Ria looked between both of them with increasing irritation.

"All three of you are insufferable." For a few seconds, the road felt almost warm. Then Ruruka looked toward the marker again. Her smile faded before she asked, "Did the shopkeeper survive?" Ria's fingers stopped against the stone. The warmth vanished.

"No," she answered quietly. Ruruka lowered her gaze.

"I see." Ria stood without another word. She did not look back when we continued walking. The farther we traveled, the more fragments of Velmora appeared. A section of fortress wall floated beside the road, blackened by old fire, while a broken fountain stood without the courtyard it had once occupied. Part of a gatehouse leaned over the darkness at an impossible angle, one tower missing completely. Ria recognized almost all of them. Sometimes Vael named the place first. Sometimes Seris supplied a memory.

Other times recognition crossed Ria's face and disappeared before anyone spoke. She never stopped for long. That hurt more to watch than if she had. Ruruka eventually slowed beside a section of ruined wall. Three deep impact scars crossed the stone. Mana burns surrounded them. Not demonic ones. Human. Ruruka stared at the marks for several seconds before moving closer. Her hand slowly tightened around the hilt of her sword.

"We did this," she said. Vael stopped and followed her gaze.

"Yes." Ruruka touched the edge of one burn mark carefully. The stone beneath her fingertips had partially melted before cooling into a glassy surface.

"Hunter attacks," she said.

"There were people behind these walls." Vael remained silent long enough that Ruruka looked toward him.

"Yes," Vael answered. There was no accusation in his voice. That seemed to make it worse. Ruruka withdrew her hand and stared at the damaged wall. Her expression had gone tight around the eyes.

"We were fighting for our world." Vael looked toward her.

"So were we." Ruruka met his crimson eyes. Nobody apologized. There was nothing clean enough to apologize for. Both sides had been fighting to survive. Both sides had left graves behind. A scraping noise echoed farther down the road. All five of us turned. Black crystal crawled upward from the edge of the path and gathered around a glowing violet core. Limbs formed first, followed by the torso and an imitation of old Velmoran armor. A second construct emerged opposite it. Then three more.

Vael drew his sword before the final Warden had finished forming. His expression hardened as he studied the combination of Dungeon crystal and demonic energy beneath the armor.

"Wardens," Vael said.

"The outer design copies an old command construct, but the body is wrong." Seris drew her shorter blade and shifted toward Ria's flank.

"Those were never built from Dungeon material."

"No," Vael replied.

"Draeven rebuilt the pattern." Ria stared at the violet cores. Her crimson eyes narrowed as dark mana gathered faintly around her fingers.

"Then we dismantle it." The first Warden lunged. Ruruka vanished in a burst of wind. Gale Acceleration cracked across the road as she crossed half the distance in an instant. Lightning wrapped around her sword while she twisted inside the Warden's downward strike and drove her blade beneath its arm. Steel struck black crystal. The impact threw sparks across Ruruka's face and jolted her backward hard enough to lift one boot from the road.

She landed in a skid, immediately shifting her weight before the construct could capitalize.

"Hard shell!" Ruruka shouted. The Warden did not give her time to recover. Its blade swept horizontally. Ruruka dropped beneath it, loose strands of hair snapping across her cheek while the weapon passed close enough to stir the fabric of her jacket. She planted one hand against the road and kicked upward, driving both boots into the Warden's chest. The construct barely moved. Ruruka did. She used the recoil to flip backward and landed in a low crouch several meters away.

"Very hard shell," she corrected.

"Dungeon crystal," I said. I gathered an Arcane Blast. The road immediately trembled. A nearby ruin blurred, its upper half stretching sideways toward the darkness. I killed the spell before the distortion could worsen. Ruruka blocked another strike and glanced toward me while sparks scattered from her blade.

"Why did you stop?"

"The road doesn't like it." Seris ducked beneath another Warden's weapon, her blade scraping sparks from the weaker seam behind its knee.

"Ren, please define what the road not liking something actually means."

"If I release too much mana into the convergence, the road destabilizes." Ruruka twisted away from another attack.

"And if it destabilizes?" I glanced over the edge. There was still nothing beneath us.

"Unclear." Ruruka stared at me as if I had personally designed the problem.

"That is an awful answer."

"I agree."

"You're the Archmage!"

"Exactly. I should be allowed to solve this by exploding things." Ria slipped beneath the weapon of another Warden. A narrow blade of dark mana formed along her forearm, and she drove it into the softer gap behind the construct's knee before twisting away from its counterattack.

"Ren, you may complain after we survive," Ria said.

"That defeats the purpose of complaining." A Warden charged me. Fine. Precision. I waited until its blade came down, stepped half a pace sideways, and caught its wrist.

"Spatial Interference." Its arm moved ten centimeters to the right. Its shoulder stayed where it was. Crystal cracked. The construct froze. It looked down at the displaced limb. I almost felt sorry for it. Almost. I drove my fist into the exposed violet core and released a concentrated pulse of Arcane mana directly into it. The light inside the Warden burst, and its body collapsed into black fragments around my boots. Ruruka had just severed another construct's damaged neck when she looked toward me.

Her face became visibly offended.

"Nii-sama, did you just punch it?"

"It died."

"You are an Archmage."

"Versatility." Ruruka shook black residue from her sword.

"That is not what versatility means."

"It is now."

"You're impossible."

"Known condition." Ruruka groaned and returned to the fight. Vael and Seris had already fallen into a rhythm that looked older than any friendship I had watched them display in our condominium. Vael stayed directly in front of one Warden and refused to waste his sword against the reinforced plates. Every strike forced the construct to adjust its stance, gradually exposing the softer joints along its back. Seris circled outside its vision. The Warden committed both arms toward Vael. Seris moved.

Her blade entered the exposed spinal seam from behind, and the construct convulsed violently. Vael immediately stepped into the opening and drove his sword through the violet core from the front. Both withdrew their weapons at almost the same moment. The Warden collapsed between them. Seris looked toward Vael with visible satisfaction.

"Slow." Vael wiped black residue from his blade.

"You were late."

"I was allowing you to contribute."

"You nearly missed the opening."

"I created the opening."

"You exploited mine." Seris smiled.

"Good. Your memory still works." Vael opened his mouth to respond. Another Warden attacked him. Probably for the best. The final construct approached Ria. It raised its weapon. Then stopped. Everyone noticed. The violet light behind its smooth face dimmed. Its head tilted. Ria's expression changed. The weapon lowered several centimeters. Vael inhaled sharply.

"Royal authority." Ria stared at the Warden.

"It recognizes me." The construct lowered its head another fraction. Not quite a bow. Close enough. For one strange moment, the old command system seemed to remember exactly who stood before it. Then black veins appeared across the Warden's armor. The construct convulsed. Its violet core flashed violently, and the lowered weapon began to rise again despite the hesitation still visible in the movement. Vael's expression hardened.

"Override." The Warden attacked. Ria caught its blade between both hands. Dark mana erupted around her fingers while her boots slid several centimeters across the road. The construct forced downward, but Ria locked both arms and stopped the weapon. Real anger crossed her face. Not irritation. Something colder.

"Even this," Ria whispered. The construct strained against her. Ria looked directly into the violet slit across its face.

"You overwrite even this." She twisted both wrists. The crystal blade shattered between her hands. Ria stepped inside the Warden's guard and pressed her palm against its chest.

"Black Dominion." Dark mana detonated through the core. The construct broke apart from the inside, fragments flying around Ria before dissolving into black smoke. She remained standing among them after it died, breathing slightly harder than before. Vael approached carefully.

"The network accepted your authority." Ria stared at the fading fragments.

"Then rejected it." Seris crouched beside one piece that had not yet disappeared. She ran her fingertip over the black veins contaminating the crystal before lifting her gaze toward Ria.

"No," Seris said.

"It did not reject you." Ria looked toward her.

"Then what did it do?" Seris held the fragment up between two fingers. Her usual humor had disappeared again.

"It overruled you." That was worse. Vael's face became still as the implication settled over him.

"The command structure is already recognizing another sovereign authority." Ria slowly raised her gaze toward the darkness ahead.

"Draeven." We continued deeper into the convergence. The road gradually narrowed, and the fragments of old Velmora became less frequent. Broken fortifications gave way to smooth walls grown directly from black Dungeon crystal. Ancient stone became rarer with every hundred meters until the path stopped resembling a preserved piece of the old kingdom and began resembling something newly manufactured. The change was almost seamless. That made it worse. Old Velmora had cracks. Burn marks. Uneven stone.

Signs that people had lived there. The new structures had none. Seris ran one hand along a smooth crystal pillar and frowned when she found no familiar markings beneath the surface.

"This isn't reconstruction," Seris said. Vael studied the perfectly symmetrical structures surrounding us.

"No. There is almost nothing original left in this section." Ria did not stop walking.

"He replaced it." Her voice was quiet enough that the words almost disappeared beneath the faint pulse of the road. Nobody asked what she meant. The old approach. The old command structures. Maybe eventually the old throne. Draeven was not rebuilding Velmora. He was choosing which parts of it deserved to survive. Seris stopped near the left side of the road several minutes later. She crouched beside the base of a broken column and brushed away a layer of black dust.

Three diagonal scratches crossed the stone, with one vertical mark carved beneath them. Vael moved beside her instantly. Ria's eyes widened. I recognized it from the previous extraction route.

"Morcant." Seris touched the scratches carefully.

"Fresh. Not more than several hours." Ruruka approached and looked down at them.

"Same warning as before?" Vael nodded.

"The main route is compromised. Patrol pattern altered." Seris moved toward another section of the column and cleared away more dust. A second symbol waited there, smaller and deliberately hidden near the base.

"This mark identifies civilians," Seris said.

"He was directing anyone who recognized the code away from the main route." Ria moved immediately. Vael caught her forearm. She spun toward him so quickly that dark mana gathered instinctively around her free hand.

"Release me, Vael." Vael did not. His grip remained firm, but his expression was calm rather than confrontational.

"Ria, Morcant left the first warning specifically so we would not rush forward."

"He may be injured."

"He knew that when he made the mark." Ria's crimson eyes flashed.

"You do not know what condition he was in."

"No," Vael answered quietly.

"But I know Morcant. If he had wanted us to run toward him, he would not have carved a retreat code." The anger in Ria's face held for another second. Then she saw the blood. Several dark red drops stained the road beyond the symbol. Not monster blood. Demon blood. Fear replaced Ria's anger so quickly that she could not hide it. Her free hand slowly closed into a fist. Her nails broke the skin of her palm. I moved closer but left enough distance that she would not feel crowded.

"He left the second mark too," I said. Ria looked toward me.

"If Morcant had lost control completely, he wouldn't have wasted time telling us where civilians were. He was still thinking clearly when he passed this point." Ria's jaw tightened.

"That does not mean he is safe."

"No." I wasn't going to lie to her.

"But it means he expected someone to follow." Ria stared at the blood for several seconds before exhaling slowly. Vael released her arm. We followed Morcant's civilian mark. The side route remained invisible until Seris placed one palm against the broken column. Faint Velmoran script appeared beneath her hand, and a section of wall folded inward with a low grinding sound. The smell reached us first. Blood. Medicine. Sweat. Too many people breathing the same stale air. Ria stopped in the opening.

Dozens of eyes turned toward us. Velmorans filled the hidden chamber. Some carried weapons. Most did not. Families sat beneath weak temporary lamps with blankets spread over the floor. Injured soldiers rested against the walls, their bandages stained dark. Children slept against bags packed with whatever their parents had managed to carry from wherever they had been hiding before Morcant moved them. Nobody spoke immediately. Then a woman near the rear recognized Vael. Her hand rose to her mouth.

Another survivor stared at Seris. Then several people looked toward Ria. Recognition spread. Not because sovereign pressure filled the chamber. Because some faces did not require magic to remember. A man near the entrance tried to stand despite a heavily bandaged leg. Pain twisted his expression and forced him to brace one hand against the wall.

"Lady Ria?" Not Queen. Not Majesty. Someone had prepared them. Ria stepped inside. Something in her expression broke. Only slightly. I saw it anyway. So did Vael. Seris lowered her eyes.

"How many people are here?" Ria asked. The injured man straightened as much as his leg allowed.

"Twenty-seven in this chamber, Lady Ria. There are other groups deeper inside the maintenance routes." Vael moved closer to him.

"How many groups?"

"We don't know," the man replied.

"Commander Morcant separated them. He said if one route was captured, the others had to remain hidden." Ria's gaze moved across the chamber. A little girl stared at her from behind her mother's coat. Ria noticed. The child immediately hid farther back. Ria stopped before she frightened her more. Then she looked toward the injured man again.

"Where is Morcant?" The man looked away. Ria's expression hardened.

"Where is he?" The survivor swallowed.

"He came through here around six hours ago." Ria visibly lost color.

"Six hours?"

"Yes." Seris stepped beside the survivor.

"Where did Morcant go afterward?" The man hesitated before answering.

"The inner command levels." Vael closed his eyes. Of course. The worst possible place. Before Ria could ask anything else, an older voice came from deeper inside the chamber.

"Draeven knows." Everyone turned. An older Velmoran soldier sat against the wall with half of one horn missing. His left arm was immobilized in a rough splint, while several old scars crossed his face. Ria approached him slowly.

"What does Draeven know?"

"That Morcant is moving people." Vael's eyes sharpened.

"For how long?"

"Weeks." Seris stared at the injured soldier.

"And Draeven has allowed him to continue?" The older man laughed once. There was nothing amused in it.

"Allowed?" He lifted his splinted arm slightly.

"Morcant's soldiers have been arrested. Safe passages closed. Families relocated. Patrols doubled. Everyone suspected of helping him is watched." Ruruka frowned.

"Then why hasn't Draeven had Morcant executed?" The older soldier looked toward her.

"Because Draeven still calls him brother." The room became quieter. Ria looked away first. The younger injured man near the entrance shifted against the wall before speaking again.

"Commander Draeven is not trying to kill us, Lady Ria." Ria turned toward him. The man's throat moved nervously before he continued.

"He believes he is saving us." Vael's expression hardened.

"By constructing a false sovereign from the remains of our kingdom?" The survivor shook his head.

"There are no living sacrifices. Draeven forbade them. The Vessel uses Dungeon cores, abyssal reservoirs, residual demonic energy from the dead, and the surviving sovereign channels." Seris's face cooled immediately.

"I'm certain that distinction will comfort the humans whose cities he intends to erase." Several survivors flinched. Ria raised one hand toward Seris. Seris stopped. The injured man looked toward Ria again.

"Draeven says Velmora died because our survival depended upon a world that could be taken from us." Ruruka's expression tightened.

"He says we spent three years beneath ruins while humans rebuilt everything we damaged during the invasion," the survivor continued. His eyes briefly moved toward Ruruka, and regret crossed his face almost immediately. Ruruka did not become angry. She simply listened. The man continued more carefully.

"Draeven says no human nation will shelter demons forever without eventually demanding obedience, imprisonment, or surrender." Ria's expression hardened.

"So he intends to take territory." The injured man shook his head.

"He says he intends to make territory." That distinction mattered. I disliked that it mattered. The older soldier gestured weakly toward the pulsing wall outside the chamber.

"The anchors do more than open passages. Once the Sovereign Vessel fully integrates with the network, the convergence can stabilize a permanent region around the central domain." Ruruka looked toward him.

"What do you mean by stabilize?" I understood before he answered.

"Overwrite." Several Velmorans looked toward me. I stepped farther into the chamber.

"Draeven wants to superimpose the sovereign domain over a section of Earth. Once stabilized, it wouldn't behave like a temporary Dungeon or Gate. It would become territory." The injured man nodded.

"A place where Velmorans no longer need anyone's permission to exist." Ruruka's face darkened.

"On top of Japan." Nobody answered her. They didn't need to. Ria stood utterly still. The injured survivor looked toward her with desperation rather than defiance.

"He says nobody came when Velmora died." Ria closed her eyes. The man continued, his voice becoming quieter.

"He says we called through the old command network until the crystals failed. He says people waited for orders until the last receivers went dark." Ria's fingers tightened against her palm.

"He says if no world will shelter Velmora, then Velmora must become a world that cannot be taken." Silence settled across the chamber. The idea was monstrous. It was also coherent. That made it far more dangerous. Vael stepped beside Ria. His expression softened when he looked toward her, although his voice remained firm.

"Draeven chose this." Ria opened her eyes.

"Yes."

"Draeven chose everyone this plan will hurt."

"Yes." Vael hesitated before continuing.

"You were not here." Ria turned toward him. Vael held her gaze.

"Do not make his choices yours merely because his anger points toward you." Ria looked past him. Her eyes moved across the chamber. Families. Children. Wounded soldiers. People who had survived the collapse of a kingdom and then spent three years hiding beneath somebody else's world.

"I don't," Ria said. Vael remained silent. Ria looked toward him again.

"But responsibility is not the same thing as guilt. I can acknowledge what happened because I never returned without accepting every decision made in my absence as mine." Vael's expression changed slightly. Ria continued in the same quiet voice.

"If Draeven kept them alive when I could not, then that is part of the truth. If he turned that suffering into justification for destroying another world, that is also part of the truth." Vael lowered his head. Not a bow. Agreement. I watched Ria for a moment longer. Three years ago, she would have treated responsibility like an accusation somebody intended to use against her. Now she simply accepted its weight. That was probably harder.

We established a narrow communication thread with Aaron before leaving the chamber. His face appeared weakly above my palm, breaking into static whenever the convergence pulsed. Behind him, Guild personnel continued moving through the Saitama command area. Aaron looked past us. His expression tightened when he saw the families. Then he looked toward Ria.

"Shelter terms remain unchanged," Aaron said. He spoke loudly enough that the survivors nearest us could hear him. Several Velmorans reacted visibly. Aaron continued before anybody could ask.

"We'll establish an extraction route as soon as Master Arclight confirms that this side passage can remain stable. Until then, stay concealed. Do not engage unless this chamber is discovered." The older soldier hesitated.

"Guild Master Shanks?" Aaron looked toward him. The Velmoran lowered his head slightly.

"Thank you." Aaron immediately became uncomfortable. He was substantially better at punching monsters than receiving gratitude.

"Stay alive," Aaron replied. The connection ended. Ria remained near the entrance while Vael and Seris exchanged a few final instructions with the survivors. The little girl who had hidden behind her mother was still watching. This time, she stepped out. Only slightly. Ria noticed and stopped. The child looked at Ria's horns. Then her silver hair. Then her crimson eyes.

"Are you really Ria?" the girl asked. Ria crouched carefully to make herself smaller.

"Yes." The girl considered her for several seconds.

"My papa said you were scary." Seris made a suspicious choking sound behind us. Ria's eye twitched.

"Your father sounds intelligent," Ria replied. The little girl smiled. Ria stared at that smile longer than she probably intended. Then she stood. We left the chamber. Seris waited until the hidden entrance closed behind us before looking toward Ria with open amusement.

"Terrifying," Seris said. Ria continued walking, but a faint warning entered her expression.

"Seris, if you continue, I will demonstrate." Seris smiled.

"There she is." Vael sighed. Ruruka laughed softly. For a few minutes, the road felt less dead. Then it began to move. I noticed the pressure change beneath my boots first.

"Stop." Everyone halted immediately. One of the broken arches ahead blurred. Its outline doubled, and the second image slid several meters toward the darkness before snapping violently back into place. A ripple crossed the black road beneath us, bending the violet veins as though the stone had briefly become liquid. Ruruka's amusement disappeared.

"Nii-sama, what is happening?"

"The routes are drifting." Vael immediately planted his sword into the road when the entire path tilted beneath us. Seris caught the edge of a crystal column, her boots sliding dangerously close to the darkness before she recovered. I dropped onto one knee and pressed my right hand against the road. Spatial Awareness expanded. Pain hit immediately. The seven layers were separating. Not enough to collapse. Enough to become dangerous. I reached toward the nearest connection.

The nerves in my right arm lit up like somebody had poured molten wire through them. My fingers opened without permission.

"Damn." Ria turned toward me instantly. Her expression changed the moment she saw my hand.

"Ren, what happened?"

"Working." Another spatial pulse hit. The convergence slipped farther. My elbow gave. My knee slammed into the road, and Ruruka caught my shoulder before the rest of me followed.

"Nii-sama!"

"I'm fine." Ruruka's grip tightened.

"No, you're not." The sharpness in her voice stopped me. I looked up. My sister had gone pale. Not annoyed. Not teasing. Scared. Ruruka's eyes dropped toward my useless fingers before returning to my face.

"Stop saying you're fine like none of us can see what is happening." Ria was beside us almost immediately. She caught my wrist before I could make the extremely reasonable decision to put it in my pocket. Dark mana slipped gently beneath the skin while she checked the damaged pathways. Her expression worsened.

"You have almost no response below the elbow," Ria said.

"Temporary." Ria looked directly at me.

"You do not know that."

"I know enough."

"No, apparently you do not." I tried pulling my wrist free. Ria tightened her grip.

"Do not."

"That sounded commanding." Ria's eyes narrowed.

"I am considering breaking this arm so you can no longer misuse it." Ruruka stared at her.

"Ria, that seems counterproductive." Ria did not look away from me.

"He cannot damage what he cannot use."

"That is terrible medicine," I said.

"It is excellent discipline." Seris made a strangled noise behind us. Then the road lurched again. A piece of old stone wall tore away from the edge and disappeared soundlessly into the darkness. Fine. Marriage dispute later. I shifted the spell to my left hand. Arcane mana entered the healthier pathways while I caught the first two spatial layers. The third immediately tried slipping away. I forced it back. The fourth dragged the first with it. The fifth was worse.

"Hold still," I muttered. Ruruka blinked down at me.

"Nii-sama, are you talking to space?"

"Yes."

"Does space listen?"

"No." Ruruka stared.

"Then why are you talking to it?"

"Because it deserves criticism." Despite the fear still lingering in her face, the corner of Ruruka's mouth twitched. Better. I drew the layers inward slowly instead of forcing all seven at once. Pale Arcane lines spread beneath my left palm and crossed the road in a widening geometric web. The duplicated arch merged. The violet cracks faded. The path gradually leveled beneath us. One route remained unstable. I caught it. Pulled. Locked it. The road settled.

I stayed on one knee for several seconds after everything stopped moving. Mostly because standing immediately would have been suspicious. Ruruka still had one hand on my shoulder. Ria still had my wrist.

"I can still fight," I said. Ria stared at me with the exact expression of somebody hearing the wrong answer to a very obvious question.

"That was also not the question." I opened my mouth. No useful answer appeared. Annoying. Ruruka looked between us and slowly began smiling. I noticed.

"What?" Ruruka shook her head.

"Nothing."

"That was suspicious."

"I have facial expressions." Ria turned toward her. I looked toward Ria. Ruruka's smile widened. I understood.

"Traitor." My sister laughed. Just once. Enough to break the tension. Vael pulled his sword free from the road and inspected the stabilized surface.

"If the convergence shifts again, can you correct it?"

"I can." Ria's head snapped toward me. I sighed.

"With assistance." Her expression improved by approximately one percent. Probably the maximum available. We continued deeper. The road changed. Fragments of the old kingdom disappeared gradually behind us. Broken courtyards, ruined towers, and damaged stone markers became less frequent while smooth black crystal structures replaced them. The change was almost seamless. That made it worse. Old Velmora had cracks. Burn marks. Uneven stone. Signs that people had lived there. The new structures had none.

Seris ran one hand along a smooth crystal pillar and frowned.

The arch rose several stories above us, constructed from pale Velmoran stone fused with black Dungeon crystal. Ancient carvings covered the outer frame—stars, thorns, crescents, and old command symbols worn by age. Ria stopped first. Vael halted beside her. Seris lost every trace of humor. Ruruka looked toward me. Then I saw what they had seen. A royal crest occupied the center of the gate. Or what remained of one. Astrea's crest had been carved there once. Someone had cut through it repeatedly.

Deep gouges scarred the old symbol until most of its detail had been destroyed. Pieces of pale stone lay scattered beneath it, partly swallowed by black crystal. Over the ruined crest, another mark had been burned into the gate. Draeven's. Vael moved one step forward. The disciplined commander disappeared from his face.

"He defaced the sovereign crest," Vael said. His voice was so quiet that the anger beneath it felt sharper than shouting, and dark mana trembled around his sword hand before he forced it back down. Seris said nothing. She simply stared. That told me more than Vael's anger. Ria remained several meters from the gate. Her crimson eyes stayed fixed on the remains of her symbol. She looked strangely still, as though moving might turn the memory into something she could no longer control. I could have gone ahead.

Checked the seals. Inspected the spatial structure. Done something useful. Instead, I walked until I stood beside her. Not ahead. Beside. Ria noticed. Her eyes shifted toward me briefly before returning to the ruined crest.

"That stood above the eastern palace entrance," Ria said. Her voice had softened in a way I rarely heard outside the apartment. Seris's expression changed slightly.

"You hated it." Ria finally looked toward her.

"I did not hate it."

"You complained about it every time we entered the palace."

"The stars were too large." Vael turned toward Ria in disbelief.

"That is what you remember?" Ria looked mildly offended.

"They were offensively disproportionate." Seris exhaled a faint laugh.

"You threatened to have the sculptor redo them."

"I did not threaten him."

"You summoned him before the throne."

"To discuss artistic standards." Vael stared at both women.

"The western front was collapsing." Ria looked toward him.

"Bad art does not become acceptable during war." For a moment, even Vael's anger faltered. His mouth moved. Seris noticed. The ruined crest stopped being Draeven's insult for a few seconds. It became something the three of them remembered together. Then something clicked inside the stone. Every weapon came up. A small crystal embedded near the right side of the gate flickered to life. Static filled the road as the light disappeared, returned, and flickered again. Then a voice emerged through the interference. Weak.

Ragged. Familiar.

"You do not get to keep saying that." His laugh was barely audible this time.

"Apparently... I do." Seris covered her mouth with one hand. Vael looked as though he wanted to reach through the communicator and drag his old comrade back personally. Morcant's next breath rattled painfully through the crystal. Then his voice came through one final time.

"He has been waiting for you." The crystal went dark. Ria remained in front of it with one hand still pressed against the dead surface. She did not move even after the static disappeared, and nobody around her tried to hurry her. Seris wiped beneath one eye with the back of her wrist. She immediately pretended she had only been clearing dust from her face, although nobody believed her. Vael stared toward the ground with his jaw locked tight.
