Ria's POV I had seen Ren angry before. I had watched him endure Guild paperwork with the expression of a man being slowly murdered by bureaucracy. I had seen him irritated when somebody threatened the girls, furious when our home became involved in matters he wanted nothing to do with, and once personally offended enough by the destruction of an anime studio that an invading army eventually discovered the consequences. None of those memories helped me understand the man standing several meters away.

Ren stared at the dead communication crystal in his left hand while the Sovereign Vessel screamed behind us. Blood ran from his nose, crossed his upper lip, and reached his chin before falling onto the shattered floor. He did not wipe it away. His right hand closed slowly at his side, and that small movement frightened me more than the blood. Minutes earlier, I had felt those pathways myself. His arm had been failing from the elbow downward.

The nerves barely responded, his fingers had lost most of their strength, and every use of Spatial Interference had damaged the channels further. Now pale Arcane light moved beneath his skin. The pathways were reopening. They were not healing. They were tearing themselves open because Ren had apparently decided the restrictions imposed by his own body were no longer relevant.

"Ren." He did not look at me. The artificial sovereign pulsed again. Black crystal spread across the throne chamber, swallowing more of the old Velmoran stone while the half-formed creature inside the Vessel pressed harder against its shell. Draeven remained beside Morcant's body, blood covering both of his hands, while Vael and Seris had barely begun moving the surviving soldiers away from the expanding conduits. Ren dropped the communication crystal. It struck the floor with a faint metallic crack.

Then he walked toward the exit. I moved immediately and caught his wrist. The instant my fingers closed around him, Arcane pressure slammed through my arm hard enough to numb my fingertips.

"Ren, stop." He kept walking. My boots slid across the stone. I tightened my grip and forced more dark mana through my legs to anchor myself.

"Ren." This time he looked at me. I wished he had been mindless. I wished rage had emptied his eyes or turned his expression wild enough that I could convince myself he no longer understood what was happening. Instead, Ren looked completely lucid. Calm. Too calm. His face carried none of the irritation I knew, none of the exhausted sarcasm that usually survived even the worst situations. There was no humor in his eyes and no uncertainty in the way he looked through me toward the road beyond the throne chamber.

"The girls are there," I said quickly.

"I know. We will reach them, but if you force the network apart now, you could destabilize every connected route." Ren's gaze did not change.

"Move." One word. Quiet. Not shouted. My grip tightened around his wrist.

"No." The air around him changed. It was not a threat directed specifically at me. That somehow made it worse. His mana simply stopped distinguishing between the environment and anything else occupying his path, and the stone beneath my boots fractured under pressure that had not even been aimed downward. Behind me, Ruruka inhaled sharply.

"Nii-sama..." Ren turned his eyes toward the corridor again. I stepped directly in front of him and placed both hands against his chest.

"Ren, look at me." Nothing. No reaction. No embarrassment. No annoyed comment about personal space. He simply looked past my shoulder.

"Get out of the way." My stomach dropped. Ren had never spoken to me like that. Not even when we were enemies. Not even while sealing me. The man standing in front of me was not confused enough to forget who I was. He simply considered everything except reaching his daughters secondary. Ruruka moved beside me. Fear had drained most of the color from her face, but she still reached for her brother's arm.

"Nii-sama, listen to us. Ruri, Karin, and Hikari are alive. Aaron said the shelter was still intact. We just need to reach—" Ren vanished. The displacement struck us a moment later. Space snapped inward where he had been standing, releasing enough force to throw Ruruka backward. I caught her shoulder before she hit the floor, while Vael raised one arm against the blast of dust and broken crystal rushing from the corridor. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then another explosion echoed somewhere ahead.

Ruruka looked toward the empty passage, her expression tightening as a second impact shook dust from the walls.

"That's bad."

"Yes," I said. Seris slowly turned toward the corridor when a third explosion followed, this one sounding far closer to an entire section of architecture collapsing than any spell I recognized.

"How bad?" I released Ruruka and summoned darkness around my feet.

"Run." We ran. I used Void Step first. Darkness folded around me and collapsed the distance between two points. I emerged almost sixty meters farther down the sovereign approach, expecting Ren to be somewhere ahead. He was already disappearing around the next bend.

"Ren!" He did not look back. Two Anchor Wardens emerged from the wall ahead of him. The first never finished forming. Ren raised one hand, and its body twisted ninety degrees while the core remained where it had originally been. Crystal, armor, and demonic conduits tore themselves apart when the construct's anatomy suddenly stopped agreeing with reality. The second Warden charged. Ren continued walking toward it. No spell name. No visible preparation.

When the creature reached him, he caught its face with his right hand. The hand that had been nearly paralyzed. The Warden convulsed. Its entire body compressed inward until armor, Dungeon crystal, and internal conduits collapsed around the core like metal crushed beneath an invisible fist. Ren released it. The remains hit the floor. He walked over them without looking down. I emerged behind him through another Void Step and seized the back of his coat.

"Ren, your pathways are breaking. If you continue forcing that much mana through your right arm, you will destroy it completely." No response. He continued pulling me forward.

"Ren!" He stopped. For one hopeful instant, relief entered my chest. Then I realized he had not stopped because of me. Another group of constructs had appeared ahead. Three Wardens filled the width of the road, violet cores shining through their black armor. The first raised its weapon while the second opened its chest around a gathering beam. Ren looked at them.

"Move." They attacked. Ren disappeared. One instant he stood beside me. The next, he was among them. The first Warden's head separated from its shoulders before the air finished reacting to his movement. Ren stepped past the falling body and drove his palm through the chest of the second. Arcane light flashed once inside the construct, and the entire torso burst outward behind him. The third released its beam. Ren walked directly into it. My heart stopped. The violet attack struck him. Then bent.

Space curved around Ren's body, forcing the entire beam sideways until it carved through the corridor wall instead. Black crystal exploded into darkness, but Ren never turned toward the destruction. He simply reached the Warden. It raised both arms.

"Die." Mana Crush descended. There was no dramatic explosion. The construct simply lost enough structural integrity that its legs collapsed beneath it, its torso folding inward around the ruined core. Ren walked past the wreckage. Ruruka finally caught up in a burst of wind. She stopped beside me, breathing harder than I had ever seen after Gale Acceleration, and stared at her brother's back.

"Nii-sama!" Nothing. Ruruka's face changed.

"He isn't even answering."

"I know." Vael and Seris arrived several seconds later. Vael looked from the broken Wardens to the Arcane light crawling beneath Ren's skin, then toward me.

"Can you restrain him?"

"No." Seris stared at me. I met her eyes.

"No." That ended the discussion. Another spatial pulse traveled through the road. The Sovereign Vessel had begun forcing the overlapping layers toward Earth. A Japanese avenue appeared through the left side of the corridor, replacing darkness with emergency lights, abandoned cars, and the upper floors of several apartment buildings. The image flickered twice before stabilizing. Ren turned immediately. I understood what he had seen.

"The shelter." He stepped toward the incomplete opening. Vael's eyes widened.

"That route is not fully aligned." Ruruka ran after him.

"Nii-sama, wait! If you force that layer before the convergence stabilizes, you could tear the entire section apart!" Ren raised his right hand.

"Move." Space obeyed. The incomplete route snapped into alignment with enough force to make every surface around us scream. Buildings on the other side shifted several meters sideways while the sovereign road tore through the boundary separating both locations. Concrete cracked. Streetlights bent. Several abandoned vehicles lifted from the asphalt and slammed onto their sides. Then the opening widened enough for Ren to cross. I stared at the damage. Seris did too.

Vael whispered something deeply inappropriate beneath his breath. Ruruka looked toward me.

"He's forcing the whole route."

"Yes."

"Can he do that?"

"He is doing it." Ruruka gave me an exasperated look.

"That isn't what I meant."

"I know." We followed. The moment I crossed onto Earth, the smell changed. Smoke. Concrete dust. Burned mana. Blood. Northwestern Saitama had already suffered badly during the earlier fighting. Ren made it worse within thirty seconds. The first group of monsters emerged from a fractured intersection ahead—six Abyssal hounds, three armored creatures, and one aerial construct circling over the rooftops. Ren continued toward them.

A Guild Hunter farther down the street spotted him and shouted something I could not hear through the battle noise. Ren raised one hand. The monsters vanished. Not all in the same way. One disappeared inside a spatial fold. Another flattened into the road beneath invisible gravity, while three more were cut apart by compressed wind before reaching the sidewalk. Ice consumed the armored creatures from the legs upward before lightning crossed the frozen bodies and shattered them across the street.

The aerial construct tried to climb. Ren looked up. It stopped moving. Then fell. The impact crushed an abandoned car. Ren walked past it. The Guild Hunters nearby stopped fighting. One stared openly. Another slowly lowered his weapon. The third began backing away. I reached the intersection several seconds later and immediately understood why. A technician beside one of the emergency vehicles stared at a portable resonance scanner while the display flickered repeatedly between warnings. "Shanks, the boundaries are expanding. We should be reinforcing containment, not abandoning the forward positions." Aaron answered without hesitation.

"No. Withdraw everyone." Matsuda came through next, confusion overtaking the exhaustion in his voice.

"No? The Vessel is opening the domains."

"I am aware." Another explosion rolled across the district. Ren had encountered something else. Aaron heard it through the channel.

"Minimum withdrawal two kilometers. Actually, make it three." Kurose's voice entered almost immediately.

"Three kilometers from every fracture?"

"Yes."

"Because of the Vessel?" Aaron was silent for half a second. Then he said, "Because Master Arclight lost contact with his daughters." Nobody answered. The silence lasted long enough that distant destruction became clearly audible through the network. Hasegawa finally spoke.

"What does that have to do with us retreating?" Aaron's voice became grim.

"Everything." I looked toward the next street. Ren was already there. A massive crystal wall had erupted across the avenue. He did not slow. He placed one hand against it. The entire structure disappeared. Not shattered. Gone. The building behind it lost part of its lower façade because the spatial removal had apparently included several meters more than necessary. Aaron's voice returned through the command channel while Guild personnel around us began moving with considerably more urgency.

Four meters tall, layered in black crystal armor, with a ring of violet command symbols rotating behind its head. The pressure released when it landed drove several nearby Hunters to one knee and cracked the asphalt beneath its feet. Ren did not stop. The Guardian raised its weapon.

"Get out of the way." The creature charged. Ren stepped forward. The collision never happened. Gravity Press struck first. The Guardian slammed into the ground so violently that the intersection cratered beneath it. Ren continued forward and stepped onto the construct's enormous hand when it tried to push itself upright. The Guardian released a pulse of sovereign pressure. Windows exploded along both sides of the avenue. Ren looked down at it. No irritation. No smile. Nothing.

"Die." Mana Crush descended. The road collapsed. The Guardian disappeared beneath several meters of broken asphalt and crystal. A shockwave tore outward and ripped street signs from their poles, folding one storefront inward while another lost every remaining window. I threw up a dark barrier around the Hunters still evacuating behind us. When we lowered them, the intersection was almost unrecognizable. Seris stared at the crater.

"He did not need that much force."

"No," I answered. Vael watched Ren disappear through the smoke.

"Does he know that?"

"Yes." Ruruka looked toward me sharply. I met her eyes.

"He knows. He simply does not care." Nobody spoke after that. We followed. Aaron's retreat order spread faster than Ren. Guild vehicles pulled away from active zones. "Arclight! The evacuation route ahead isn't clear. Stop!" Ren continued walking. The commander held his position.

"Arclight!" Ren looked at him. That was enough. The commander froze. Ren's face remained blank.

"Move." The man hesitated. Arcane pressure increased. Hairline fractures appeared across his barrier. Ren took another step.

"Get out of the way." The commander moved immediately. Ren walked past. The man remained there for several seconds afterward, staring at the cracks spreading through a defense that had not even been directly attacked. Ruruka arrived beside him and placed one hand briefly on his shoulder.

"Good decision." The commander looked toward her.

"How dangerous is your brother?" Ruruka watched Ren disappear around the next block. Her expression lost all humor.

"Right now? I don't know." That answer spread among the Hunters faster than any official warning. By the time we reached the next district, people were no longer merely retreating from the fractures. They were retreating from Ren. I hated seeing it. I also understood. He tore through every obstacle between himself and the shelter. Abyssal creatures died before completing attacks. Crystal structures disappeared or collapsed.

Sections of road broke beneath spells released without the slightest concern for preserving them. Ren no longer chose the smallest correct answer. He chose the fastest one. A monster emerged from beneath an office building. Ren used Earth Spike. The creature died, and half the building's entrance disappeared with it. Another group attacked between abandoned evacuation vehicles. Chain Lightning burned the monsters. It burned three vehicles too. A flying beast crossed above a residential street.

Wind Cutter removed both wings. The attack continued into the structure behind it and opened a long diagonal wound across the concrete wall. I finally reached him again near the western evacuation corridor.

"Ren!" No response. I stepped into Void Step and emerged directly in front of him. He stopped less than a meter away. I could feel his mana pressing against my skin. Too much. Far too much. The pathways beneath his neck and right arm glowed faintly blue-white. Blood stained his mouth, but his breathing remained perfectly steady. That terrified me. I grabbed his coat.

"The girls are alive. Aaron confirmed the shelter remains intact." His eyes shifted toward the fracture beyond me.

"Ren, listen to me. You are destroying everything around you." His gaze finally moved toward mine. Still calm. Still empty of everything except purpose.

"The girls are there."

"I know."

"Move."

"No." Arcane pressure rolled outward. My silver hair lifted around my shoulders. I held my ground.

"You will kill yourself before reaching them." No reaction.

"You could destabilize the shelter." That reached him. Very little. Enough. His expression did not change, but his eyes focused on me properly for the first time since the throne chamber. I pushed immediately.

"The network is connected. If you tear through the wrong boundary, the shelter could collapse with it." Ren stared at me. For several seconds, I thought I had reached him. Then a scream echoed from several streets ahead. Ren disappeared. I nearly screamed myself. Ruruka arrived beside me a moment later.

"He listened for almost three seconds."

"That is not comforting."

"I know." Seris and Vael emerged from the smoke farther behind. Seris took one look at my expression and wisely said nothing. We followed again. The shelter perimeter finally appeared through another widening fracture, and the sight of it made my stomach tighten. Three defensive lines surrounded the reinforced underground evacuation complex. Human Hunters held the eastern approach while Velmoran volunteers fought along the western barricades, their formations already bent around several collapsed barriers.

Emergency lights flickered beneath smoke, healers dragged wounded people toward the lower entrances, and the violet fracture hanging over the district continued widening despite every attempt to contain it. Monsters crowded the avenue between us and the shelter. Dozens of them. Possibly more. Ren saw them and stopped. Not because he hesitated. Because he had finally found what stood between him and the girls. The first wave noticed him almost immediately.

Abyssal beasts poured through the intersection, several armored constructs advancing behind them while flying creatures circled over the broken rooftops. The Hunters behind the barricades froze, weapons still raised, because the battle they had been fighting for several minutes had disappeared in less than a breath. Lightning crossed both groups, and compressed wind tore through whatever remained after the combined impact. The final creature fell before Ren reached the midpoint of the avenue. Ren walked through the bodies without looking at any of them. The portable Guild scanners near the shelter began screaming almost immediately. One technician stared at his display while the numbers climbed beyond the normal range, then disappeared beneath warning messages. OUTPUT INCREASING — CLASSIFICATION FAILED A second scanner went black. The technician looked toward Ren, then down at the device, and visibly decided not to strike it despite whatever instinct told him that doing so might help.

That frightened me. Normally, Ren would have noticed. Normally, he would have told the poor man not to abuse the machine because it was trying its best. Ren did not even look in his direction. Aaron's face appeared suddenly on one of the larger emergency displays above the barricade.

"MASTER!" he shouted, but Ren continued forward as though the screen did not exist. Aaron's expression changed at once, irritation disappearing beneath something far closer to fear.

"Master, the girls are alive. Ruri confirmed all three are inside the secondary barrier." Ren kept walking. I reached the defensive line several seconds later, and Aaron's eyes moved toward me through the screen.

"Mrs. Arclight, can he hear me?"

"Yes," I answered, watching Ren pass the second barricade.

"He simply does not care what you are saying." Aaron stared at him for a moment. For once, he had absolutely nothing sarcastic to add. Then the underground structure shook. The western fracture widened abruptly, opening another black seam above the evacuation complex. Several Hunters shouted warnings as chunks of crystal began falling from the distorted sky. Ren turned toward it. The remaining restraint around him disappeared. Arcane light spread through the air in widening ripples.

Buildings trembled without being touched, loose debris rose several centimeters from the road, and every surviving barrier around the shelter flickered as his mana pressure crashed against them. Hasegawa's voice came through Aaron's command feed.

"Shanks, his output just doubled." Matsuda answered immediately.

"That isn't possible."

"It just doubled." Kurose sounded genuinely alarmed now.

"What is he doing?" Aaron looked from the readings to Ren and swallowed.

"Preparing something."

"What?"

"I don't know." That answer frightened everyone more than a precise one would have. Aaron seized another channel.

"ALL PERSONNEL, GET AWAY FROM ARCLIGHT. NOW. DO NOT APPROACH HIM. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ASSIST HIM." Hunters reacted instantly. Velmorans followed. Nobody questioned the order anymore. Ren stepped toward the expanding fracture and raised both hands. The air around the shelter distorted. Space began folding inward. My blood went cold when I understood what he intended to do. He was not preparing to destroy the monsters coming through the fracture. He was preparing to destroy the path itself. The fracture.

The surrounding command structures. The section of the sovereign network feeding it. Possibly several city blocks along with everything connected to them.

"REN!" He did not react. I ran. Ruruka triggered Gale Acceleration beside me, wind bursting around her legs as she shot across the ruined avenue. We were still too far away. Then the shelter doors opened. Three small figures emerged from behind the Guild personnel stationed inside. For one terrible second, my heart stopped. Ruri came first, her blue hair disheveled and a bandage wrapped tightly around one forearm.

Karin followed with soot across one cheek, gripping Hikari's hand while the youngest still held that ridiculous tiny spoon in her free hand. All three stared toward the battlefield. Then they saw him. Ren stood in the middle of the destroyed avenue surrounded by enough Arcane pressure to warp the air around his body.

Blood covered the lower half of his face, pale mana burned beneath the skin of his right arm, and the path behind him was filled with shattered barriers, broken roads, dead monsters, collapsed structures, and craters deep enough to swallow vehicles. He looked nothing like the father who complained whenever anyone asked him to get off the sofa. Ruri's eyes widened.

"Papa?" Ren did not hear her. Not yet. The fracture above the shelter expanded again. A massive shard of black crystal broke loose overhead and began falling toward the evacuation line. Hunters shouted immediately.

"GET BACK! EVERYONE INSIDE!" The girls looked upward. Karin reacted first and grabbed Hikari's arm. Ruri caught both of them. For one instant, I thought she was going to drag them back into the shelter. Instead, Ruri pulled them forward. Toward Ren. Panic exploded across the barricades. Several Hunters lunged after them. A healer screamed for the girls to stop, while Aaron's face went completely white on the command screen.

"MASTER!" They kept running. Through the damaged barricade. Across the shattered street. Straight toward the man every combat unit in the district had just been ordered to flee. My breath caught.

"RURI!" She did not stop. Karin pulled Hikari around a fallen piece of concrete, and Hikari nearly lost her tiny spoon before tightening her grip around it. Then something moved inside the smoke to their left. A surviving monster. It had been buried beneath the wreckage earlier and forced itself upright the moment the girls passed. Black limbs unfolded behind them, its jaws opening as it lunged toward Ruri's back. Ruri saw the shadow. She turned and pushed Karin and Hikari forward. Ruruka moved. I moved.

Ren was faster. His head turned. He saw them. Everything changed. The Arcane storm vanished so suddenly that the silence left behind almost hurt. Ren disappeared from the center of the avenue and reappeared directly in front of the girls. Spatial distortions sealed themselves, the pressure forcing Hunters backward vanished, and the cracking buildings around us finally stopped trembling.

Ren lowered himself onto one knee while holding all three girls against him. For several seconds, he did not speak. Ruri clung around his neck, her fingers twisted into the back of his coat. Karin had both arms wrapped around his side, while Hikari buried her face against his chest and held the tiny spoon between them. Ren stared at them. Really stared. His breathing changed. "No! You don't get to say anything yet! You're Papa. You're supposed to tell us not to get hurt!" Several nearby Hunters stared in disbelief. None of them appeared brave enough to interrupt a six-year-old scolding the man they had just evacuated three kilometers to escape. Ren looked behind himself. For the first time, he seemed to actually see what he had done. The district was in shambles. Roads had split open beneath gravity fields. Storefronts had collapsed.

Several buildings carried deep cuts from elemental attacks, three major craters marked places where Sovereign Guardians had once stood, and an overturned bus rested against a broken barrier while a streetlight had somehow become embedded in the side of a completely unrelated structure. Ren stared at the destruction for several seconds. Karin pointed toward it.

"You made a mess!" He remained silent. Hikari finally raised her head from his chest. Her golden eyes were swollen from crying.

"Hikari was scared." That reached him more deeply than Karin's anger. Ren looked toward her.
