"They aren't aiming anything."

"They will not need to be." Seris's expression remained dry, but I could hear the old intelligence officer beneath it.

"A firing line does not become comforting because everyone agrees to smile." Kurose, standing several paces away, made a quiet sound of irritation.

"They're not a firing line." Seris turned toward him.

Kurose glanced toward him.

"That's specific." Seris answered before Aaron could.

"Because people who have spent three years being hunted occasionally react badly when strangers run at them." Kurose's expression hardened, but he did not argue. That was progress. Perhaps. "You were offered shelter under conditions accepted by both sides. Humans remain armed. We remain armed. Neither side hides what it carries. If you violate the agreement before crossing the gate, you insult every survivor already inside who trusted it enough to arrive." The soldier looked toward me. He expected something. "I'll Warp back near the building," Ren explained.

"Take your car from the condo, pick up the girls normally, and stay with them. You drive Fluffy home when everyone here is finished." Ruruka immediately narrowed her eyes.

"Normally means you do not Warp into the school parking lot." Ren looked offended.

"I know what normally means."

"You once teleported into my kitchen because you forgot your wallet."

"That was different."

"It was twelve meters from the front door." Ren ignored her and pointed at Fluffy's keys now resting in her hand.

"Fluffy has room for everyone." Seris, who had developed strong opinions regarding the SUV after a single evening, muttered, "Unfortunately." Vael maintained his diplomacy.

"The vehicle is spacious."

"It is named Fluffy," Seris replied.

"Hikari named it."

"That continues not to improve the situation." Ren slid his hands into his pockets.

"See you at home." I caught his sleeve before he could leave. He looked back.

"Do not buy them unnecessary snacks." Ren's expression became suspiciously blank.

"I wasn't going to."

"Ren."

"I wasn't." Ruruka sighed beside us.

"Take it up with the paperwork." Kurose's expression suggested that paperwork had become his newest enemy. The third group arrived shortly after three in the afternoon. They came in two vehicles and carried fourteen survivors between them: three children, two elderly civilians, four former support personnel, and several combatants whose remaining armor had been repaired with pieces that had clearly never belonged to the original sets. "But do not hang it over this place as though we have claimed it." The survivor followed my gaze. His fingers tightened slightly around the banner as he considered what I had said.

"Then what is this?" he asked.

"A shelter." His eyes returned to mine.

"And what are we?" That question hurt considerably more. I looked beyond him. Talren was speaking quietly with one of the Guild medics. The woman who had told me she had not come for me sat beside her son while he received treatment. "Still inside." He did not need to explain where. The silver-haired woman closed her eyes and released a tired breath that almost became a laugh.

"Of course he is." Ruruka, standing nearby, looked toward Vael.

"You expected that?" Vael remained silent for several seconds before nodding.

"Morcant could have left before I did. He had routes, contacts, and enough authority to disappear if he chose carefully." Seris stared down into her cup.

"He didn't stay because of Draeven." The woman beside her shook her head.

"He stayed because there were people who couldn't leave." No one answered immediately. Morcant remained somewhere inside Draeven's sphere because children, wounded soldiers, civilians, and families still depended upon structures they could not simply abandon. Leaving would have saved Morcant. That had never been his priority. We had decided not to contact him yet because reaching his personal channels while Draeven's security was tightening could place him in immediate danger.

Yesterday, that decision had felt rational. Today, surrounded by people who had escaped because another door finally existed, rationality carried considerably more weight. The fourth and fifth groups had still not arrived by nightfall, but that was not immediately alarming. Their routes were longer, and Seris had already warned us that one group included several elderly survivors who could not travel quickly. "You sound like someone's mother." I turned toward her slowly. Her smile widened.

"Seris."

"I said nothing incorrect, Astrea." Ruruka laughed before she could stop herself. I looked between the two women and experienced the unpleasant realization that allowing Seris and Ruruka to become comfortable around one another might create consequences I had failed to consider. Before I could formulate an appropriate threat, the old receiver on Vael's table emitted three short pulses. Every Velmoran in the common room looked up. The atmosphere changed instantly.

Seris reached the device first, leaning over the small display as every trace of amusement disappeared from her face. Aaron approached from the doorway at the same time, while Vael moved around the table to read over her shoulder.

"What is it?" Aaron asked. Seris did not answer immediately. The first message was short. WESTERN PATH CLOSED. PATROLS MOVING. NAMES BEING CHECKED. A second line arrived several seconds later. THE GENERAL KNOWS PEOPLE ARE LEAVING. Nobody spoke. Aaron's attention shifted toward the command room. Vael's voice broke the silence once we reached the command room.

"He will react." Aaron looked toward him while the anchor maps illuminated the wall.

"How?" Vael did not answer immediately. His eyes moved from the coded message to the seven-anchor display, and for the first time that day the tension in his shoulders became plainly visible.

"That depends on whether he still believes he has time." One of the monitors sounded. The warning was soft. Almost unimpressive. Everyone turned anyway. The mana-output graph for the sixth anchor had begun climbing. Not dramatically. Not enough to trigger evacuation protocols. Enough that nobody could dismiss it as ordinary fluctuation. Hasegawa moved toward the display.

"How much?" The technical Hunter enlarged the graph.

"Eight percent above the previous baseline and rising." Matsuda came closer from the opposite side.

"Only the sixth?" The technician began to answer, then another indicator changed beneath his hands. He stared at it.

"Not anymore. Fourth anchor is responding." Aaron's expression hardened. Ruruka pulled out her phone.

"I'm calling Nii-sama." She had barely unlocked the screen when it rang. Ren. Ruruka answered immediately and placed him on speaker.

"Nii-sama?" Ren's voice came through beneath the faint noise of the television somewhere in the apartment.

"I felt it." Aaron stepped closer to the phone.

"From Chiba?"

"The spatial pressure changed." Kurose, who had entered after hearing the monitor alarm, stared at the phone with renewed irritation and disbelief. Aaron ignored him.

"Can you tell what changed?" There was a brief pause before Ren answered, and the easy tone he had used throughout most of the day had disappeared.

"Not yet. But if two anchors are rising together, don't assume they're independent anymore." Vael looked sharply toward the graphs. Seris did the same. Aaron's eyes narrowed.

"Synchronization."

"Probably." Ruruka glanced toward me while keeping the phone steady.

"Nii-sama, the girls?"

"With me. We're home." Hikari's voice came faintly from the background.

"Papa, Guild Master Uncle coming home too?" Ren moved the phone slightly away from his mouth, and his voice softened in the effortless manner it always did around the children.

"Not yet, Hikari." Then he returned his attention to us. Aaron looked across the seven graphs.

"What happens if a third one moves?" For several seconds Ren did not answer. When he finally did, his voice was quiet.

"That depends on what Draeven built them to do." The call remained open. Nobody in the command room relaxed. I looked through the windows toward the compound outside. Lights now glowed inside buildings that had been empty that morning. Through one window I could see the old Velmoran banner hanging beside rows of temporary beds. Through another, a human medic was speaking with Talren while the injured older survivor slept nearby. Thirty-three people had entered today. Thirty-three.

Not soldiers marching beneath royal colors. Not subjects returning because their ruler had summoned them. They had arrived wounded, hungry, suspicious, grieving, angry, and alive. The army that came home to me did not carry banners into battle. It carried medicine bottles, patched coats, frightened children, old swords, and everything that remained of lives interrupted three years ago. On the command display, the fourth anchor continued climbing. Then the indicator beside the seventh changed. Ruruka saw it first.

Her expression hardened as she stepped closer to the monitor.

"Aaron." Aaron followed her gaze. The seventh graph began to rise. A third anchor. Silence settled over the command room. From the phone in Ruruka's hand, Ren exhaled quietly. Aaron looked toward the speaker.

"Master?" Ren's answer came after only a moment.

"Yeah." The casualness was gone completely.

"Now it's synchronizing." I looked back toward the shelter beyond the glass. Somewhere outside those walls, Draeven had finally realized that the people he believed belonged to his future were walking away from him. And almost immediately, the system he had spent years constructing had begun to answer. The network had begun to move.
