Ria's POV The first thing Seris did after stepping into our home was stop. Ren had barely finished unlocking the door when she crossed the threshold behind Vael, one hand resting near the sword at her hip out of habit rather than immediate suspicion. I removed my shoes and placed them beside Ren's.

"They should be asleep." Ren closed the door behind us and gave me the weary look of a father who had already learned that bedtime was less an established fact and more an optimistic proposal.

"Should." Seris glanced toward him before her attention shifted to the framed photograph standing on the cabinet. It had been taken beneath the tree after the legal wedding photographs. Ren looked mildly uncomfortable in formal clothing, I looked as though I had accepted photography under protest, and the girls looked delighted enough for all five of us. "And you're the Archmage's sister," Seris replied. Ruruka gave a small nod.

"Ruruka. We've never met."

"No." Seris's mouth curved faintly.

"But I heard about you." Ruruka returned the expression.

"I heard about you too." The silence that followed contained more history than either sentence. Three years ago, they would have stood on opposite sides of a battlefield. Ruruka had fought beside Ren against my forces. Seris had carried intelligence through routes Hunters desperately tried to break. They had never personally crossed blades, never exchanged threats, and never stood close enough to know the other's face. But each understood perfectly well what the other had represented. Seris folded her arms.

"There were reports about a wind swordswoman operating near the Archmage during several engagements. Irritatingly difficult to predict." Ruruka raised one eyebrow.

"Funny. We had reports about the Demon Queen's intelligence officers somehow never being where they were supposed to be whenever we finally reached them." Seris glanced toward Vael.

"That was frequently him." Vael, standing beside the door with perfect dignity despite wearing one of Ren's shirts beneath his coat, inclined his head.

"Frequently." The answer cracked the tension enough for Ren to sigh and move toward the kitchen. Vael continued watching both women for another moment before speaking with the solemnity of someone issuing a military clarification.

"For the record, there is currently no war occurring inside this residence." Ruruka looked mildly offended.

"I wasn't planning anything."

"Neither was I," Seris replied. Ren stopped halfway to the kitchen and looked over his shoulder.

"Somehow that made it worse." A laugh almost escaped me. Almost. Then another sound came from the hallway. Ruri appeared first. She wore pale blue pajamas and carried herself with the solemn dignity of someone who had been awakened because the household had clearly failed to maintain proper order in her absence. One side of her hair was slightly tangled, and she rubbed an eye before noticing the unfamiliar guest.

"Papa?" Ruri asked softly.

"Mama?" Ren's entire expression softened.

"Sorry. We woke you." Ruri shook her head, then looked toward Seris. I stepped closer.

"Ruri, this is Seris. She is an old friend of mine." Something passed through Seris's expression. Brief. Small. "Why is everyone awake?" Her gaze passed over Ren, me, Vael, and Ruruka before stopping on Seris. Sleep disappeared instantly.

"Another demon?"

"Karin," I warned. Karin stepped closer anyway, studying Seris with the direct intensity of a child who believed every unknown adult existed primarily to answer important questions.

"Is she strong?" Seris stared down at her. I watched the moment she realized that redirecting Karin would require considerably more effort than simply answering.

"Yes," Seris said. Karin brightened.

"How strong?"

"Karin."

"I was asking."

"You were beginning an interrogation." Karin opened her mouth to dispute the distinction when the smallest footsteps came from the hallway. Hikari appeared with both hands empty. Her hair had completely surrendered to sleep. One cheek carried the faint crease of a pillow, and her eyes remained half closed as she shuffled toward us. She looked first at me, then at Ren, then down toward my coat.

"Mama?"

"Yes?" Hikari rubbed one eye.

"Spoon safe?" I stared at her. Of everything that had happened tonight, this apparently required immediate verification. I reached into my coat and withdrew the tiny spoon she had entrusted to me before we left. Hikari's face brightened.

"Spoon came home."

"Apparently." She accepted it carefully with both hands, examined it for damage with the seriousness of a quartermaster inspecting a sacred weapon, and only then appeared satisfied. That was when she noticed Seris. Hikari stopped. Seris looked down. They stared at one another. Hikari blinked once before her sleepy expression brightened.

"Pretty demon." Seris's lips parted. No answer came. Ren covered his mouth suspiciously. Hikari shuffled forward another two steps, spoon held against her chest, then raised both arms toward Seris.

"Up." Seris turned toward me. I offered no assistance. She looked toward Vael instead. Vael's expression became remarkably solemn.

"Pick up the Princess." Seris frowned.

"Why?" Vael folded his hands behind his back.

"Resistance has proven ineffective." Ruruka made a choking sound that she disguised as a cough. Seris looked down again. Hikari continued holding her arms up with complete confidence that reality would eventually cooperate. Eventually, Seris surrendered. She bent and lifted Hikari carefully, one arm supporting her back while the other settled beneath her legs.

Hikari immediately rested her cheek against Seris's shoulder, tiny spoon still clutched in one hand, as though this arrangement had been approved long before Seris arrived. Seris froze. Ruruka stared. I noticed. Ren noticed. Vael noticed too and demonstrated excellent survival instinct by becoming extremely interested in the opposite wall. For several moments, Seris merely held my daughter.

Her expression shifted gradually as she studied Hikari's sleepy face, and something distant moved behind her eyes, something older than war, crowns, and ruined kingdoms. Then she looked at me.

"She is as cute as you were when we were young, Astrea." Every trace of amusement vanished from my face. Ren's head turned so quickly that the collar of his shirt shifted. Ruruka's eyes widened with immediate and dangerous interest. Karin stepped closer. Hikari lifted her face from Seris's shoulder.

"Mama was cute?"

"You are tired," I told her.

"You should return to bed." Hikari considered my answer and rejected it.

"Mama was cute?" Seris smiled. I knew that smile. I had known it when we were children. Nothing good had ever followed it.

"Very," Seris said.

"Seris." She ignored me.

"When diplomats visited the western palace, Astrea occasionally disappeared behind the long curtains near the council chamber because she hated formal greetings." Ren slowly leaned against the wall, visibly invested now. I turned toward him before he could speak. He spoke anyway.

"Continue."

"No." Ruruka covered her mouth, but the movement of her shoulders betrayed her. Karin stared at me with the fascination of someone discovering that her mother had once existed at an age where embarrassment was possible.

"Mama hid from people?" Karin asked.

"I was a child." Karin nodded thoughtfully.

"That means yes."

"It means this conversation is finished." Seris looked far too pleased with herself. Hikari, apparently satisfied that the historical record had been corrected, settled against Seris again and murmured, "Auntie Seris." Ruruka stopped laughing. Her eyes shifted toward Hikari, then toward Seris, and finally back toward Hikari as if confirming that she had heard correctly.

"Auntie Seris." Ren looked at his sister. I looked at Ren. Vael remained committed to not involving himself. Ren made the fatal decision.

"Competition." Ruruka turned toward him with a smile so pleasant that anyone unfamiliar with her would have mistaken it for warmth.

"There is no competition, Nii-sama." Ren glanced pointedly at Hikari curled comfortably against Seris.

"Sure."

"Nii-sama." I decided that whatever conflict had just begun was not yet my responsibility. Seris, apparently unaware that she had crossed a territorial boundary more dangerous than anything remaining from Velmora, looked between them with genuine confusion. For once, I allowed her to remain ignorant. Morning arrived with unacceptable speed. Aaron's encrypted call came shortly after breakfast, confirming that the restricted regional conference had been arranged.

Three neighboring Guild branches had agreed to send representatives, along with several senior Hunters responsible for disaster response and high-rank dungeon containment. Officially, the meeting concerned the seven-anchor network, recent dungeon anomalies, and the possibility that surviving demons remained active within Japan. Unofficially, Aaron was about to ask Hunters who remembered the invasion to help shelter the people who had come through those rifts. That required honesty.

At least enough of it to make negotiation possible. Ruruka stood beside the dining table while Ren checked the secure communicator Aaron had provided. Ruri was clearing breakfast plates. Karin was attempting to convince Vael that washing dishes counted as an excellent opportunity to discuss knife techniques. Hikari sat beside Ruruka with her tiny spoon restored to its rightful place, using it to move pieces of fruit from one side of her plate to the other without any apparent intention of eating them.

I watched Ren for several seconds before speaking.

"Remove it." Ren looked up from the communicator.

"Remove what?"

"The Arcane Concealment. Only the layer hiding what I am." The room became quieter. Seris turned toward me. "I should be attending."

"You should," Aaron replied.

"You're low S-rank, you were inside the merged dungeon, and you personally witnessed several relevant anomalies. Unfortunately, unless Master has learned how to manufacture trustworthy babysitters, someone still needs to remain with the children." Hikari had now balanced a grape on the end of her tiny spoon and seemed deeply invested in whatever scientific principle she believed she was testing.

"I'll stay." Karin immediately brightened.

"Can we train?" Ruruka looked at her.

"No." Karin frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I'm babysitting, not opening a combat school."

"That doesn't answer whether—""It answers everything." Seris watched Ruruka handle the exchange with the expression of someone quietly reevaluating a former enemy's most dangerous qualifications. Then Ren, Vael, Seris, and I left. "I understand." Seris folded her arms.

"I have no desire to announce Astrea's history to a room full of Hunters." Aaron visibly decided not to address the old name.

"Good. Also, nobody kills Kurose." Ren frowned.

"Who's Kurose?" Aaron closed his eyes briefly.

"Hopefully somebody you don't need to remember." That answer should have warned us. Ren opened the door. The room beyond was already occupied. Three Guild Masters sat around a long conference table while senior Hunters occupied the remaining chairs or stood behind them. Maps of the seven suspected anchor zones filled the wall displays, alongside fluctuation graphs, evacuation routes, dungeon-density projections, and casualty estimates nobody appeared eager to discuss. Every conversation stopped when Aaron entered.

Then they saw me. Several expressions hardened immediately, though surprise came first. I understood why. Humans liked their demons simple. Ugly things with claws were easier to hate. "Vael Ardyn. Former intelligence commander among the invading forces. He separated from General Draeven after confirming that Draeven had moved beyond survival operations and into construction of an artificial sovereign." Several Hunters stared openly. Aaron continued, indicating Seris.

"Seris. Former intelligence officer. She has operated independently and retains knowledge of survivor routes, old field channels, and several groups outside Draeven's immediate control. Both are cooperating." Guild Master Hasegawa, a narrow-faced woman whose expression had remained severe since our arrival, turned toward me.

"And her?" I answered before Aaron could.

"Ria Arclight." Hasegawa's eyes shifted toward Ren. Then back to me.

"Arclight?" Ren leaned back in his chair.

"My wife." Silence settled over the room with almost physical weight. Matsuda blinked.

"Your wife is a demon."

"Yes."

"And you're a Hunter." Ren nodded.

"I already dislike this meeting." Aaron muttered, "Get in line." Hasegawa ignored both of them. Her attention remained on me.

"What position did you hold during the invasion?" Aaron answered immediately.

"I held command authority." Matsuda's eyebrows rose.

"How much?"

"No." Kurose's gaze narrowed.

"Then why should we trust you?"

"You should not trust me because I married Ren. You should decide whether the information I provide is accurate and whether the conditions we establish are honored." Kurose gave a humorless laugh and leaned farther toward the table. His eyes passed over my horns and face with open contempt before settling on Ren for an instant.

"Convenient. Three years ago, demons came through those gates and slaughtered people. Now you take a human family name, live in a Hunter's home, and we're expected to pretend that makes you civilized." The room tightened. I did not move. Neither did Vael, though his jaw hardened visibly. Seris's eyes became noticeably colder. But Aaron was no longer looking at any of us. He was looking at Ren. That was when I felt it. Ren's posture had not changed dramatically. That was precisely the problem.

The boredom had disappeared from his face. The lazy slouch was gone. He sat completely still beside Aaron, eyes resting on Kurose with none of his usual tired humor. "You're low S-rank. Congratulations. Stop talking." Matsuda looked sharply between them.

"Shanks." Aaron ignored him. Kurose's jaw tightened.

"I don't need protection from—""Daigo." Aaron's voice sharpened just enough to cut him off.

"If you value your continued existence, do not insult Master Arclight's wife while Master Arclight is sitting three meters away." The word Master landed harder than the warning. Several people looked toward Ren. Ren inhaled slowly. The pale mana vanished.

"I could have handled him." Ren met my gaze immediately.

"I know." There was no implication that I required rescue, no assumption that I was weak, and no attempt to claim authority over me. "You expect people who have spent three years hiding from Hunters to surrender the only weapons keeping them alive?" Her voice remained controlled, but the muscles along her shoulders had tightened. Aaron shook his head.

"I said declare. Not surrender. Weapons remain sheathed unless the site comes under attack. No active combat spells inside the shelter without authorization. No concealed preparation for violence. Human security remains armed too, because asking my people to walk in helpless would be equally stupid." Seris studied him for several seconds, and although distrust remained plain in her eyes, some of the tension in her shoulders eased.

"And identification?"

"Preferably names."

"So you can catalogue us." Aaron leaned back in his chair.

"So I know who I'm sheltering." Seris's reply came quietly.

"Those sentences have a habit of becoming the same thing." Several people around the table became noticeably less comfortable. Aaron did not dismiss the concern. He considered it, glanced once toward the documents in front of him, and then nodded.

"No Association registry. My branch keeps coded identifiers only—enough to verify who enters, who leaves, whether somebody violates the agreement, and whether we accidentally shelter the same person under three aliases. Real names remain with Ria, Vael, and Seris unless the individual chooses to provide them." Hasegawa frowned.

"You're asking us to shelter unidentified former enemy combatants."

"Some are former combatants," Aaron replied.

"Some are civilians. Some are wounded. Some never served Draeven. We do not know which until they come in, which is exactly why we need a process instead of treating every demon we see as an active soldier." Seris watched him more carefully now. For the first time since entering the room, her hostility eased by a measurable amount. Kurose remained unconvinced.

"And if one of them walks in armed and decides to use it?" Ren finally spoke.

"Taking the weapon won't solve that." Several heads turned toward him. Ren rested one elbow against the table, looking far more tired than threatening now that his mana had disappeared.

"If you strip weapons from people who already believe you might kill them, they'll assume you're proving them right. They'll either refuse to come or arrive expecting betrayal. Neither option helps." Kurose's mouth tightened.

"Your solution is letting demons remain armed inside Guild-controlled territory?"

"My solution is not pretending the sword is what makes a dangerous demon dangerous." Ren glanced briefly toward Vael.
