Ren's POV Aaron arrived at my condominium at nine in the morning carrying enough paperwork to make me briefly reconsider whether saving his life in the past had been a good investment. I knew it was him before I even reached the entrance because the intercom had already rung twice, my phone had vibrated three times against the kitchen counter, and Hikari was running through the living room announcing that "Guild Master Uncle" had arrived as though an important foreign dignitary were visiting.

Apparently, Aaron had met my children enough times to earn a permanent family title without anybody bothering to consult him. I stood in the entrance hall with coffee in one hand and stared thoughtfully at the closed door. There were several possible responses to this situation. The responsible option was opening it. The intelligent option was listening to whatever disaster Aaron had brought before it became a larger disaster.

The personally attractive option was teleporting somewhere warm and leaving Ria to explain why her husband had mysteriously vanished three seconds before a scheduled meeting. Unfortunately, marriage had given my terrible decisions a witness. Ria stepped out of the kitchen carrying a plate of sliced apples and immediately stopped when she saw me staring at the door instead of moving toward it.

Her silver hair was tied loosely behind her shoulders, and she wore a simple white blouse with dark trousers, but the disappointed expression on her face carried enough authority to make the entrance hall feel like a courtroom.

"If you teleport away to escape paperwork, Mage," she said calmly, "I will personally tell the guild master where you went." I looked at her over the rim of my mug.

"Marriage confidentiality should protect me from this."

"That concept does not protect cowardice," Ria replied, placing the fruit on the nearby table. When I argued that it absolutely should, she crossed her arms and gave me the kind of stare normally reserved for disappointing subordinates.

"Open the door before your guest concludes that the supposedly great archmage has been defeated by a doorbell." Before I could defend myself, Hikari came running down the hallway with tiny spoon raised like a ceremonial weapon. Ruri followed at a much more reasonable pace, while Karin appeared behind them carrying her wooden practice sword despite being repeatedly informed that indoor diplomacy did not require armaments. Hikari reached toward the lock and announced, "Hikari will open the door!"

but I caught her gently around the shoulders before she could manage it.

"Papa opens doors for suspicious guild officials," I told her. Hikari looked up at me with enormous golden eyes.

"Guild Master Uncle is suspicious?"

"Yes." From the other side of the door came Aaron's muffled voice.

"I can hear you, Master." I closed my eyes. Behind me, Ria's lips twitched before she immediately restored her composure, while Karin nodded as though Aaron had just proven my accusation.

"Very suspicious," she whispered.

"Good hearing." Ruri, already looking tired despite the day barely starting, asked me to please stop bullying the visitor and open the door. There were moments when being an SSS-level archmage mattered. This was not one of them. I finally opened the door and found Aaron standing outside in a dark coat, a leather document case in one hand and a tablet tucked beneath his other arm.

His usually neat red hair had been combed back, though a few strands had already escaped, and faint shadows beneath his eyes suggested he had spent most of the previous night doing something irresponsible like working. His gaze settled on me first.

"Good morning, Master."

"Debatable," I replied. Before Aaron could answer, three small heads appeared around me. Hikari greeted him brightly as "Guild Master Uncle," which made the man pause long enough to glance at me for explanation. I only shrugged and informed him that he had apparently been promoted. Ruri offered a polite, "Good morning, Uncle Aaron," while Karin immediately ignored social convention and pointed toward the document case.

"Did you bring dangerous information?" Aaron looked down at the case, then back at her.

"Possibly." Karin's eyes lit up.

"No," I said immediately. She frowned at me.

"I haven't asked anything."

"You were going to."

"That's unfair."

"That's experience." Ria approached from behind us before Karin could file a parental complaint. Aaron's posture straightened almost imperceptibly when he noticed her, his gaze sharpening for only a heartbeat before professional courtesy settled over his face.

"Mrs. Arclight," he greeted with a small inclination of his head.

"Guild Master," Ria replied. Her eyes dropped to the document case, then moved back to him with visible disapproval.

"You brought work into my house." I nearly inhaled coffee. My house had quietly become my house when she was complaining about something and our house when defending it from paperwork. Interesting development. Aaron blinked once before recovering.

"I'm afraid the circumstances required it." Ria looked at me.

"He arranged this with you?"

"I was asleep when he messaged." Aaron's expression flattened.

"Master, you replied to me."

"Sleep texting."

"You wrote, 'Fine. Nine. Bring coffee if you value your life.'" I considered that for a moment.

"That does sound like me." Without changing expression, Aaron reached down and lifted a paper carrier I had somehow failed to notice beside his leg. Two cups sat inside it.

"I brought coffee." I stepped aside immediately.

"Welcome to our home." Ria stared at me with open disappointment as Aaron entered. The meeting had originally been intended to take place quietly around the dining table. That idea survived for approximately four minutes. Hikari wanted to know why Aaron's projected map contained seven glowing dots. Karin asked whether the red lines represented enemy supply routes.

Ruri had to move the plate of sliced fruit twice because both Karin's elbow and Hikari's tiny spoon repeatedly wandered dangerously close to Aaron's papers. By the time everyone finally sat down, tiny spoon had somehow acquired its own place beside one of the regional maps. Aaron stared at it for a moment.

"Should I ask why there is a spoon attending the meeting?"

"No," I answered.

"Hikari brought tiny spoon because tiny spoon is listening," Hikari explained anyway. Aaron looked at her solemn expression, then at the utensil, before giving a slow nod.

"Of course. My mistake." I liked him slightly more for adapting without resistance. Ria sat across from Aaron with a cup of tea in both hands, looking far too dignified for someone seated at a dining table surrounded by colored pencils, half-finished homework, and a spoon with unofficial military clearance. I took the seat beside her and opened the coffee Aaron had brought, already feeling significantly more cooperative.

Ruri, Karin, and Hikari were technically supposed to be in the living room doing schoolwork and drawing, but all three had positioned themselves close enough to hear everything. I looked at them pointedly.

"Children. Living room." Three suspiciously innocent faces turned toward me. Karin was the first to protest, pointing toward Aaron's map and insisting, "But this is strategy." When I explained that it was adult strategy, her expression became deeply offended.

"That sounds discriminatory."

"You are six."

"Age discrimination." Ria slowly turned her head toward her. Karin stared back for approximately two seconds before grabbing her notebook.

"The living room sounds peaceful." Ruri took Hikari by the hand and led both sisters away before the debate could evolve into a constitutional crisis. They settled on the carpet only several meters from us, which was technically compliance and therefore difficult to challenge without creating more work. Aaron watched them for a moment with an expression hovering somewhere between amusement and disbelief.

When I asked what he was looking at, he shook his head and said, "I was remembering the man who once told me his ideal retirement involved doing absolutely nothing for the rest of his life."

"I was young then," I replied.

"That was three years ago."

"Tragedy ages people." Ria took a measured sip of tea before adding, "He still attempts to accomplish nothing. The household simply refuses to cooperate." Aaron's eyes moved between us, and a faint smile appeared.

"You seem to have adjusted remarkably well to married life, Mrs. Arclight." Ria's cup stopped halfway toward the table. The pause was tiny. Barely noticeable. I noticed. Aaron probably noticed too. Then she lowered the cup gracefully and replied, "Someone in this household must provide competence."

"She means Ruri," I said. Ria kicked me beneath the table. I kept drinking coffee. Experience had improved my pain tolerance. Aaron cleared his throat before our marriage derailed his investigation. He opened the tablet and projected a regional map above the dining table, pale blue light spreading across the room and illuminating seven marked locations.

"The reason I wanted to discuss this personally is that the anchor sites form a pattern much more deliberate than we initially realized. I spent most of last night comparing the spatial lines Master mapped inside the old dungeon with historical dungeon records, unexplained mana spikes, and Association archives going back three years." At first glance, the seven locations looked scattered. Chiba, Saitama, Tokyo, and several points positioned between urban areas and mountain regions.

Nothing formed a perfect circle or recognizable symbol on a flat map. But when Aaron adjusted the projection, adding dungeon depth, mana direction, and spatial distortion rather than simple surface coordinates, the picture changed. The map tilted until it became three-dimensional. Seven luminous threads descended through invisible layers of space, each angled toward the same hidden center. I leaned forward without realizing it. There went my peaceful morning.

Aaron enlarged the first marker and explained, "Anchor One is the Chiba educational district. The physical inscription you found near the girls' school corresponds almost perfectly with one of the spatial lines connected to the receiver beneath the old dungeon. Based on weathering and mana erosion, the inscription is at least several months old, perhaps significantly more."

Beside me, Ria's fingers tightened slightly around her teacup at the mention of the school, though her voice remained controlled when she said, "Meaning whoever placed it selected that location long before Hikari's dream." Aaron nodded.

"Correct. Anchor Two corresponds to the merged dungeon where Ruruka was injured. Anchor Three matches the Saitama farming gate that rose from D-rank to B-rank and produced the Demon Knight. Anchor Four is the Tokyo E-rank gate that suddenly became C-rank and generated the Spectral Wolf." I studied the remaining markers, tracing the lines with my eyes.

"What about Five?" Aaron changed the projection.

"An older B-rank gate north of Chiba. Nothing visibly catastrophic occurred there, which is why nobody associated it with the recent incidents. Six months ago, however, its core registered a thirty-percent mana increase over approximately six hours before returning to normal." I frowned.

"Any boss mutation or terrain change?"

"None."

"Monster abnormalities?"

"None recorded." Ria leaned toward the projection, silver eyes narrowing thoughtfully.

"Then perhaps that anchor was not used to test creatures. It may have existed solely to determine whether a dungeon core could transfer energy without destabilizing." Aaron nodded.

"That is increasingly my interpretation." The fifth marker dimmed while he highlighted the sixth. His expression grew more serious.

"Anchor Six corresponds to an abandoned C-rank dungeon in western Saitama. It collapsed nearly two years ago. The core was officially destroyed, but spatial residue around the site never fully dissipated. Small mana fluctuations have continued ever since, all below the threshold normally required for investigation." I rubbed one hand over my face.

"Of course they were." Aaron gave me a tired look.

"You say that often."

"Reality lacks originality." While we complained, Ria continued examining the formation in silence. Her eyes moved carefully from one point to another, following angles I could not yet see. The longer she studied it, the more her expression changed. Confusion slowly gave way to recognition, and the fingers resting against the edge of the table became completely still. I turned toward her.

"You recognize it." Aaron stopped speaking. Ria did not answer immediately. Instead, she reached into the projection and rotated the map, changing the angle until geography became almost meaningless. The seven anchor points shifted around the central receiver. From this perspective, they resembled seven long petals curling inward—or seven blades pointed toward a single heart. Ria's lips pressed together.

"I have seen the underlying structure before," she finally said. Aaron straightened.

"What is it?"

"A Sovereign Convergence Formation." Even the name sounded expensive. Aaron's expression became grim.

"What was its purpose?" Ria kept her gaze on the projection.

"Large-scale territorial invasion." The room seemed quieter after that. Even I stopped drinking coffee for a moment. Aaron leaned forward, both forearms resting against the table.

"How does it work?" Ria hesitated, apparently deciding how much could be explained without accidentally saying when I commanded armies across dimensional borders. Eventually she lifted one finger and traced the first anchor line through the projection.

"An ordinary gate exploits an existing weakness between two territories. It opens because the boundary is already thin enough to be forced. A convergence formation creates that weakness artificially. One anchor tells space where the connection begins. Several anchors working together force a larger region to behave as though two distant territories are adjacent." Aaron frowned.

"Force space to agree?"

"A crude description, but adequate," Ria replied.

"Reality resists contradictions. A single anchor can be rejected or collapse. Seven synchronized positions reinforce one another until the central receiver becomes difficult for the boundary itself to deny." I leaned back in my chair.

"That seems rude." Both Aaron and Ria looked at me.

"To reality," I clarified. Ria stared at me for several seconds before her expression collapsed into tired disbelief.

"Yes, Mage. Ancient demonic invasion rituals were notoriously inconsiderate toward the emotional wellbeing of space."

"Glad we agree." Aaron briefly closed his eyes as if silently requesting patience from whatever deity monitored guild masters. When he opened them again, he looked toward Ria.

"You said this resembles the formation. You did not say it is one." That was the correct question. Ria's humor disappeared.

"Because the original design did not use dungeons." She enlarged one of the anchor sites, then another.

"Traditional formations used territory stones, ritual towers, large obelisks, or other fixed conduits designed specifically to withstand transfer pressure. Whoever constructed this version replaced those components with dungeon cores." I stared at the seven points again. Something clicked. The rank jumps. The mutated bosses. The Special Variant. The merged dungeon with two separate domains and two bosses. The inconsistent terrain. None of them had been random.

Aaron reached the same conclusion almost simultaneously. His eyes widened slightly before narrowing with grim understanding.

"The anomalies were experiments." Ria nodded.

"If someone intended to substitute dungeon cores for proper ritual anchors, they would need data. How much mana could a core absorb before collapsing? How dramatically could a creature mutate while remaining stable? Could foreign monsters survive inside another dungeon's territory? Could two separate dungeon domains overlap without destroying each other?" My thoughts returned immediately to the merged dungeon where Ruruka had almost died. Arcane Structures woven into an Abyssal Domain. Titan Guardian.

Abyss General. Separate cores occupying the same dungeon space. Not a malfunction. A test. Worse, a successful one. Aaron enlarged the incident report, his jaw tightening.

"Then the merged dungeon was probably their most advanced trial."

"Successful trial," I corrected quietly. Aaron looked at me. Unfortunately, neither of us needed to argue about the distinction. Ria folded her arms, her face becoming colder as she studied the data.

"Both domains remained coherent. Both bosses manifested. Neither core rejected the other before outside interference destroyed them. Whoever orchestrated the incident proved that two independent dungeon territories could be forcibly combined." Aaron's gaze moved toward the old sealed dungeon at the formation's center.

"Which means the final objective may involve merging something much larger than two dungeons." The thought sat heavily between us. For several seconds, only the faint hum of the projection filled the dining room. Then Karin's voice floated in from the living room.

"If the enemy has seven bases, we should destroy all seven before they finish the super weapon." Ruri sounded exhausted.

"Karin, you are supposed to be doing mathematics."

"I am doing strategic mathematics." Hikari joined them cheerfully.

"Hikari thinks seven is very many." All three adults at the dining table slowly looked toward the living room. Karin had her notebook open. There were no numbers visible. Only a drawing of seven circles surrounding what appeared to be a giant monster. I rubbed my forehead.

"They hear everything." Ria sighed.

"They inherited poor respect for boundaries from their father." I turned toward her.

"Excuse me?" Her expression remained perfectly calm. I briefly considered reminding her which one of us had recently crossed most of a mattress while asleep. Then I remembered my interest in continuing to breathe. Aaron's shoulders shook once before he disguised the reaction as a cough. He returned his attention to the projection and changed the subject before I could create a domestic incident.

"There is still Anchor Seven." The final marker glowed yellow rather than blue. Unlike the others, no registered dungeon icon appeared beneath it. I frowned.

"The spatial line terminates in a mountainous region near the Saitama-Gunma border. There is no active registered dungeon at the location, nor any known core." Ria leaned forward.

"Because yesterday afternoon, one of our remote observation stations detected living demonic mana there." The room became still. The distinction mattered. Dungeon contamination lingered. Residual mana clung to stone. Dead monsters left signatures for hours or sometimes days. Living mana moved. I set my coffee down slowly.

"How recent?"

"The signature was less than twelve hours old when detected." Ria's posture changed beside me. It was subtle. Her spine straightened. Her chin lifted by a fraction. The warmth that had settled naturally into her expression during breakfast vanished, replaced by something older and sharper. For one moment, I saw Astrea beneath Ria Arclight. Aaron expanded the observation report.

"The signature appeared for approximately two minutes and fifty-eight seconds. It moved roughly four hundred meters through the forest, stopped near the presumed anchor site, and then vanished."

"Vanished how?" I asked.

"Teleportation?"

"We cannot confirm. There was no detectable gate or conventional spatial fracture." Ria's gaze had fixed on the mana graph.

"Show me the raw resonance." Aaron looked at her, then tapped the screen. A dark waveform appeared over the map. Ria stopped breathing for a second. I saw it. Her eyes widened only slightly, but something changed behind them. Recognition struck first. Then disbelief. Then a tiny, dangerous fragment of hope she clearly did not want anyone to see.

"Ria?" I asked quietly. She did not respond immediately. Her eyes remained locked on the waveform, and when she finally spoke, her voice came lower than before.

"I know this resonance." Aaron immediately focused on her.

"You recognize the individual?" The question seemed to pull her back to the room. Ria's expression closed, pride snapping into place like armor. I stepped in before our increasingly fragile overseas-hunter story died beside Hikari's fruit plate.

"From your work overseas?" Ria's eyes flicked toward me. Understanding passed between us.

"Yes," she answered after a beat.

"I have encountered mana structured like this before." Aaron watched both of us with the expression of a man collecting evidence for a future conversation I did not want to have. Thankfully, he chose the immediate danger over interrogating my marriage.

"Can you tell what produced it?" Ria leaned closer to the projection, using the movement to conceal the emotion still lingering in her face.

"A high-ranking demon. Intelligent. Highly disciplined. The mana suppression is too precise for a beast and too stable for ordinary dungeon-born creatures. Whoever produced this knew exactly how much presence they were allowing to escape."

"A military officer?" Aaron asked.

"Possibly." I looked at Ria rather than the map. One of her hands rested against her knee beneath the table, fingers curled tightly into the fabric of her trousers. She was controlling herself so carefully that someone unfamiliar with her might have mistaken her for calm. I knew better. Hope frightened her. That realization surprised me. Anger was easy for Ria. Pride was practically a natural resource. Embarrassment could be converted directly into violence.

But hope meant allowing the possibility that someone from her old life had survived, and possibilities could disappoint you. I turned back toward Aaron.

"Who else knows about this?"

"Myself, two analysts, and the monitoring station chief."

"Keep it that way." Aaron nodded.

"Already done." Ria finally pulled her gaze away from the waveform and looked at me.

"You intend to investigate the location."

"Obviously." Her eyes narrowed faintly. I smiled.

"Your word."

"That does not make hearing it from you less irritating." Good. Still Ria. Aaron closed the waveform and folded his hands together.

"Before either of you decides to disappear into the mountains, we need an approach plan. If that signature belongs to a surviving officer from the Demon King's forces, then we have no guarantee the individual is friendly." Ria's expression hardened immediately.

"If this individual wished to attack your monitoring station, Guild Master, there would likely no longer be a monitoring station." Aaron paused, visibly deciding whether that was reassurance.

"That did not help."

"It was not intended to." I leaned back with my coffee.

"Mrs. Arclight diplomacy." Ria gave me a cool sideways look.

"Would you prefer I lie?"

"I'd prefer another coffee."

"You have already had two."

"One existed before the meeting."

"It remains coffee." Aaron looked from Ria to me and then toward the living room, where three children were pretending not to listen.

"Should I perhaps return when your household is less... occupied?"

"No," Ria and I answered at exactly the same time. We stopped. Aaron's eyebrows rose. Ria looked at me. I looked at her. Then we both looked away with suspicious synchronization. From the living room, Karin whispered far too loudly, "They did the married thing again." Ruri immediately hissed, "Karin, please stop listening to them."

"Hikari likes the married thing," Hikari added happily. Ria's cheeks developed the faintest pink tint. Aaron lowered his face toward his tablet, but the corners of his mouth were clearly fighting against him. I sighed.

"This meeting has lost professionalism." Ria kicked me beneath the table again.

"It never possessed any." The investigation somehow continued. Hikari eventually decided Aaron had been working too long and carried over a small plate of apple slices. She placed it beside his tablet and informed him that "Guild Master Uncle needs energy because dangerous paperwork is strong." Aaron accepted the fruit with the solemn gratitude of a warrior receiving supplies during a siege. Karin appeared next, carrying her notebook. I immediately became suspicious. She pointed toward the yellow seventh marker.

"If six anchors are inside dungeons but one is hidden without a dungeon, then maybe the hidden one is more important." The room became quiet. Aaron looked at Karin. Ria looked at Karin. I looked at my daughter. Karin slowly lowered her pencil.

"Why is everyone staring?" Ruri hurried over and placed both hands on her sister's shoulders.

"Because you are supposed to be solving multiplication."

"I solved something else."

"You did." Ruri gently steered her back toward the living room while Karin protested that strategic thinking should count as extra credit. Once they were gone, Aaron looked at me.

"She has your instincts." I sighed.

"Ria says that too."

"Because it is true," Ria replied. Unfortunately, Karin was right. The other six anchors had either occupied existing dungeon sites or manipulated known gates. The seventh had no registered dungeon, no obvious core, and no recorded anomaly strong enough to attract attention. Yet someone had hidden it for years. And yesterday, a living demon had visited it. Aaron reopened older records.

"There is one more thing. The seventh location has been surveyed before. Two years ago, the Association investigated a minor mana fluctuation in that region. They found no dungeon, no monsters, and nothing dangerous enough to justify long-term monitoring." He brought up an old aerial photograph. Dense forest covered the mountainside. Dark green trees crowded an abandoned road half-swallowed by vegetation, while the ruined remains of what might once have been a small shrine or military outpost stood near a clearing.

Moss-covered stones protruded through the undergrowth, their shapes softened by rain and time. Aaron zoomed in. A broken pillar stood beside the ruins. Ria leaned closer. Her expression changed immediately.

"Enlarge that." Aaron did. The image blurred slightly under magnification, but faint carvings became visible along the weathered stone. Time had worn away most of the inscription, yet the angular structure remained recognizable. Ria's lips parted.

"That is not Japanese." Aaron's face hardened.

"Demonic script?"

"Yes." The answer escaped too quickly. Ria realized it a fraction later.

"The same script family as the ones we examined," she corrected. Aaron looked toward her. Then toward me. I drank coffee. The cover story was developing holes large enough to classify as windows. Still, the discovery mattered more. This was the first physical evidence we had found outside an active dungeon. Not a mutated monster. Not mana residue. Not a damaged core. Someone had built something in those mountains. Someone who knew Ria's language. Someone whose living mana had appeared there yesterday.

The lazy part of my soul quietly packed a suitcase. So much for retirement. Aaron closed the photograph and spoke with renewed seriousness.

"I recommend a limited reconnaissance operation. Myself, Master, Mrs. Arclight, and possibly Ruruka once she receives medical clearance."

"No," Ria said immediately. Aaron blinked.

"Mrs. Arclight?"

"The swordswoman remains injured."

"She is recovering quickly."

"She remains injured," Ria repeated, the finality in her tone leaving little room for debate.

"If she tears those wounds open because you require another sword, I will hold you personally responsible." I looked toward Ria. Interesting. Aaron did too. After a brief pause, he adjusted.

"Then the three of us." I considered it. Aaron's Clairvoyance would be extremely useful. He was also strong enough to protect himself if things became violent. But if the person hiding there genuinely belonged to Ria's old army, walking into their refuge with a human guild master beside us could convert a conversation into a battle before anyone spoke. I looked toward Ria. She was already looking at me. Same conclusion.

"We go first," I said. Aaron's expression immediately flattened.

"Master."

"Ria and me. Quiet approach."

"I dislike that plan."

"I assumed you would."

"The target may be hostile." Ria answered before I could.

"And seeing three armed human hunters approaching may ensure that hostility. If the individual belonged to the invasion force, the last clear memory they may possess of humanity is warfare." Aaron went silent. There was something in Ria's expression when she said it. Not theory. Memory. I continued more carefully.

"We make contact first. You monitor from outside the region. If the situation is safe, we bring you in. If it isn't, you'll already have our location." Aaron rubbed his jaw, obviously disliking every part of this while recognizing the logic. Eventually, he exhaled.

"You realize I hate when you make reasonable arguments."

"Everyone does." Ria gave me a warning glance.

"Do not become proud."

"Too much effort." Aaron reluctantly accepted the plan on the condition that I carry a live coordinate beacon, emergency transmitter, and recording crystal. I told him that sounded excessive. Ria looked at me in disbelief.

"You enchanted a spoon." I paused. Aaron slowly looked toward tiny spoon, which remained positioned beside the regional map like evidence for the prosecution.

"That was different," I said.

"How?"

"Hikari carries it everywhere." Ria's expression became unbearably satisfied. Aaron looked away. Traitor. By the time the meeting ended, nearly three hours had passed. Aaron packed his reports while Hikari supplied him with two additional apple slices "for guild energy." Ruri thanked him politely for visiting, and Karin asked if she could examine his gauntlets next time. Aaron made the fatal mistake of saying, "Perhaps." His future suffering was no longer my responsibility.
