Ren's POV There were probably more professional ways to prepare for first contact with a surviving officer from the Demon Queen's army than arguing over sandwiches at seven in the morning, but professionalism had never survived particularly long inside my household. I discovered this after entering the kitchen and finding Ria standing behind the counter with three food containers arranged in front of her like military supplies.

Morning sunlight had only begun climbing over the neighboring buildings, pouring through the windows in pale golden strips that caught against her silver-white hair. She had already dressed for the trip in dark trousers, boots, and a long black coat practical enough for the mountains, yet instead of preparing weapons or studying maps, she was cutting apples into annoyingly identical slices with the concentration of someone performing surgery on an enemy officer.

I stopped beside the doorway and examined the containers.

"Are we investigating Anchor Seven or opening a restaurant in the mountains?" Without looking up, Ria slid another perfect apple slice into place.

"We are taking lunch. Before you complain, you said the merged-dungeon investigation would take only a few hours, then returned injured, hungry, and several hours later than expected. Yesterday, you said almost the same thing before we spent most of the day underneath a dungeon that should have been dead. At this point, preparing food is simply accepting the evidence."

"That sounds unfairly logical." I moved toward the coffee machine and discovered a cup already waiting beside it, steam curling gently from the dark surface. I looked at the cup, then toward Ria.

"You made my coffee too." Ria finally raised her eyes. The tension she had carried since yesterday remained faintly visible around them, but her expression immediately sharpened when she realized what I was about to do.

"I prepared breakfast for this household. If you intend to turn coffee into evidence of something sentimental, I can still pour it away." I took the cup immediately.

"I appreciate the household." Her knife stopped for half a heartbeat. That was all. Ria returned her attention to the cutting board, but the tips of her ears had gained a faint trace of color.

"Drink quietly, Mage." Interesting. I wisely decided not to investigate further. She had been restless since Aaron showed us the seventh anchor. During dinner she had checked the regional map three times while pretending to look for something else on the tablet. Later, while the girls argued over which movie to watch, I caught her attention drifting toward the window whenever the room became quiet. Sometime after midnight, I woke briefly and discovered her side of the bed empty.

She had been standing near the window in her sleep clothes, silver hair falling over her shoulders while she watched Chiba's lights glitter beneath the dark sky. I had pretended to remain asleep. Sometimes even I knew when a joke would do more harm than good. This morning, however, she was cutting apples so evenly that I suspected the fruit was being punished for the crimes of her former military. I took a drink of coffee and leaned against the counter.

"You know, if you keep slicing them like that, eventually one of the apples might confess." Ria's knife stopped. She slowly turned her head, looking at me with open disbelief.

"Confess to what?"

"I am preparing food."

"Sounds exhausting." Ria exhaled through her nose, but the corner of her mouth twitched before she could stop it.

"Ignore your father. What did you need?" Hikari suddenly remembered her purpose and raised tiny spoon with both hands.

"Mama and Papa need safety blessing before mountain." Of course. Tiny spoon had officially become field equipment. I crouched beside Ria while Hikari tapped the spoon gently against my shoulder. Her sleepy expression became extremely serious as she announced, "Papa comes home."

"That's the plan." Her small brows pulled together. Apparently, plans did not meet current safety regulations. I corrected myself.

"Papa will come home." Hikari nodded in approval and turned toward Ria. The former Demon Queen lowered her head without even pretending this was ridiculous anymore. Tiny spoon touched her shoulder, and Hikari whispered, "Mama comes home too." Ria's lips parted slightly. For the briefest instant, something vulnerable crossed her face, softening her eyes as she looked at our youngest daughter. She placed one hand over Hikari's fingers and answered quietly, "Yes. Mama will come home."

"With Papa," Hikari added. Ria glanced toward me. I raised an eyebrow but wisely remained silent. She looked back at Hikari and squeezed her small hand.

"With Papa." Satisfied, Hikari immediately abandoned the sacred atmosphere and asked for an apple slice. I stood.

"I'm responsible."

"Hikari wants to meet Mama's friend," she explained.

"Can we keep one?" Karin asked.

"I'm capable of learning."

"That remains unproven. You repeatedly address dangerous individuals with 'hey,' you called the sealed dungeon a murder cave in front of a guild master, and when I once declared that I would take revenge upon you, your response was 'sure.'""That last one worked."

"It increased my desire to kill you."

"But did you?"

"That is not the measure of successful diplomacy, Mage." I smiled faintly. More importantly, I watched some of the stiffness leave her shoulders.

"Fine. You talk first. I remain quiet unless something goes wrong." Ria gave me a suspicious look.

"Define wrong."

"They attack you."

"I can defend myself."

"I know."

"Then why does that immediately become your responsibility?" I sighed and slowed Fluffy as the road tightened around a steep bend.

"You're doing that thing where you interpret 'I'll help' as 'I think you're helpless.' Those are different sentences." Ria's brows drew together.

"I have no need to be protected merely because the individual may have served me."

"Never said you did." I glanced toward her briefly before returning my attention to the road.

"I know exactly how dangerous you are. You tried to kill me personally. Very educational experience. But being able to protect yourself doesn't mean everyone who cares about you is supposed to stand around and watch." Her expression went still. I immediately regretted sounding competent. Ria looked back through the passenger window. Sunlight flickered across her reflection as forests rolled past outside.

For several seconds she remained quiet before murmuring, "You say reasonable things at extremely inconvenient times."

"Bad habit."

"You should stop."

"Working on it."

"You are not."

"I can lie if you'd prefer."

"No."

"Yes."

"The man who sealed you." Ren lifted one hand.

"You married him?"

"It began as a legal arrangement," I replied quickly.

"Paperwork," Ren added. I turned toward him.

"You are not helping."

"Whatever conclusions you draw about the last three years, understand this before anything else. Nobody forced me into my current life. Nobody controls me. I chose to remain where I am." Vael's suspicion faltered, leaving confusion behind. His gaze moved from me to Ren and back again.

"Then... why?" I should have possessed an easy answer. Instead, images arrived in no useful order: Hikari offering tiny spoon blessings, Ruri quietly adding water to our travel bag, Karin declaring war on cookware, Ren asleep beneath a pile of daughters, grocery arguments, family photographs, school meetings, a ridiculous shared bedroom, warm dinners, and mornings I had never intended to want.

"I have daughters," I said. Vael blinked. His expression became so empty that for several seconds I wondered whether he had suffered some internal injury.

"Daughters."

"Three." Slowly, painfully, his gaze moved toward Ren.

"The Archmage is their father?"

"It is complicated," I answered at exactly the same moment Ren said, "Yes." We looked at each other. Vael looked between us. Ren rubbed the back of his neck.

"Legally, practically, emotionally... yes. Biology is where the paperwork becomes weird." I closed my eyes briefly. Of course that was how he would explain our family. Vael continued staring until his gaze returned to me.

"You are a mother." Something in the way he said it hurt unexpectedly. Not accusation. Wonder. I remembered Hikari's sleepy voice promising that Mama would come home. Ruri's quiet trust. Karin's fierce certainty that I would protect their father. My expression must have softened because the remaining hostility in Vael's face changed.

"Yes," I answered.

"I am." For the first time since recognizing me, he seemed to see someone beyond the sovereign he remembered. He saw Ria. I did not know whether that was comforting or terrifying. Ren apparently decided the atmosphere had become too emotionally functional.

"Hikari already asked us to bring you home if you turned out nice." I turned toward him so quickly my hair moved across my shoulder.

"Mage." Vael blinked.

"Bring me... where?"

"Our place," Ren explained, completely ignoring my warning.

"Karin will probably ask to inspect your sword. Ruri will ask whether you've eaten. Hikari has a spoon." Vael stared at him.

"A spoon."

"Important spoon." I pressed two fingers against my forehead.

"Stop explaining my household."

"I think he should be warned." Against every reasonable instinct, laughter threatened somewhere beneath my ribs. I swallowed it. Barely. The absurdity helped. It gave me something familiar between the crushing relief of seeing Vael alive and the guilt already gathering behind every scar on his body. His expression eventually became serious again. He looked toward the ruined structure behind him, and the change in his eyes immediately killed what remained of the humor.

"Your Majesty, we should not continue speaking in the open. There are things you need to know." My shoulders straightened.

"About the anchors?" The slight tightening around his mouth was enough. Ren noticed too. The lazy softness disappeared from his posture so subtly that Vael probably missed it, but I had seen that transformation enough times now to recognize when the archmage beneath the tired father had awakened. Vael nodded.

"The anchors. The surviving factions. Everything that happened after the rift."

"Then take us somewhere secure." His gaze moved toward Ren. I saw the objection coming and ended it before he could speak.

"He comes with me." Vael's jaw tightened.

"Your Majesty, he is—""My husband, the father of my daughters, and the mage most capable of understanding the spatial structure we are investigating." I held Vael's gaze until his resistance slowly faded.

"Anything you tell me, Ren hears." The words left more easily than I expected. Ren looked at me. I refused to look back. Vael noticed both of us, though he had enough survival instinct not to comment. After a moment he lowered his head.

"As you command." I had not heard those words directed toward me in three years. The sound followed me toward the ruins. Vael pushed aside a thick curtain of ivy, revealing narrow stone stairs descending beneath the collapsed structure. Several faded demonic symbols glowed beneath his fingertips, sending muted violet light down rough walls slick with mountain damp. The air grew cooler as we descended, carrying the smell of stone, smoke, and old metal. The shelter at the bottom was painfully small.

A rough wooden table occupied most of the central room. Shelves against one wall held preserved food, salvaged human supplies, rolled maps, old tools, and weapons repaired beyond any reasonable lifespan. Three bedrolls lay in one corner, although two had gathered a thin layer of dust. I stopped. Vael noticed where I was looking.

"Seris and Morcant are elsewhere." My head turned sharply.

"Alive?"

"Yes." Relief passed through me so quickly my knees almost felt weak. Three. Only three from eleven. But three. I closed my eyes for a single breath before following Vael toward the table. Ren placed our travel bag near one of the chairs, and something inside shifted with a small metallic clink. Vael glanced toward the sound. Tiny spoon. I ignored it. We sat down. Vael remained standing until I finally looked up at him with enough irritation that instinct overcame protocol.

"Sit, Vael. You are making me feel ancient." He almost smiled.

"Begin with the rift." Vael's face changed at once. The reunion disappeared behind memory, and his shoulders seemed heavier as he folded his scarred hands together.

"When the passage destabilized, entire units were separated in seconds. Some reached this world directly. Others emerged inside dungeon territories. Command crystals failed one after another because the dimensional distance became too unstable, but those of us who retained contact attempted to regroup."

"Who held senior command after we were separated?" I asked, though a part of me already feared the answer. Vael hesitated.

"General Draeven." My breath caught. Across the table, Ren glanced toward me but remained quiet. Draeven had commanded my western forces. He had served my father before my coronation, and despite an infuriating belief that nearly every strategic problem could be solved by increasing troop numbers, he had been one of the kingdom's most experienced generals.

"He survived the crossing?"

"At least initially," Vael said.

"He gathered the largest concentration of survivors and established temporary routes between several dungeon territories." Relief came first. Unease followed immediately behind it.

"What happened after that?" Vael lowered his gaze.

"We searched for you." The answer landed with such force that my fingers stopped against the table. He continued carefully, explaining that every surviving unit they reached had received the same priority order: locate Queen Astrea, confirm whether I lived, follow any trace of sovereign mana. They monitored human guild movements, followed rumors of unusual dark magic, entered unstable dungeons, and crossed human territory beneath concealment. Some died following false traces.

Others disappeared while trying to force damaged gates open. I listened without interrupting until one question became impossible to hold.

"How long did you search?" Vael looked up.

"Two years." For a moment, the violet lamps blurred. Two years. Two years while I existed inside a seal unable to hear them, answer them, or know they remained alive. I looked down at my hands. Vael's voice became quieter.

"During the first year, most believed you survived. Some thought humans had captured you. Others believed the Archmage had imprisoned you beyond any route we could trace. A few insisted you had somehow been thrown back into our world." His eyes moved briefly toward Ren. Ren leaned back slightly.

"The imprisonment theory was technically the closest." I should have been irritated. Instead, the blunt honesty helped keep the memory from swallowing me completely. Vael continued.

"By the second year, every theory began dying because none produced evidence." I forced myself to ask, "And you?" His expression softened with a loyalty that suddenly hurt to see.

"I believed you would return." I looked away. Vael lowered his eyes again, his voice becoming rough.

"I told them our Queen would not abandon us. Whenever another unit lost faith, I told them to wait. Whenever Draeven questioned whether continuing the search was worth the lives it cost us, I told him you would return." The pressure inside my chest became almost unbearable. For three years, I had filled silence with hatred. They had filled it by waiting for me. I swallowed and made myself continue.

"What happened to the survivors while you searched?" Vael's face darkened. He explained that demons discovered outside dungeons were attacked almost immediately, sometimes by hunters and sometimes by terrified civilians before guilds arrived. Those trapped inside active dungeons fought both native monsters and hunter teams. Supplies vanished. Communication collapsed. Some smaller groups turned against each other.

Several attempted unstable crossings back toward our world rather than remain trapped here and were never seen again.

"How many?" I asked. Vael's mouth tightened.

"I cannot give you an honest number." My nails pressed against my palm beneath the table.

"Then do not give me a dishonest one."

"I would never." A quiet movement came from beside me. Ren placed his hand on the table near mine. He did not touch me. He simply left it there, close enough that if I moved my fingers even slightly, they would meet his. I stared at his hand for a second before raising my eyes. His face held none of the pity I would have hated. Only quiet attention. I hated how much that steadied me. Vael noticed. Something changed behind his eyes, but he continued.

"Eventually, survival changed people. Waiting changed them more. By the end of the second year, some stopped asking where you were and began asking why you had not returned." I felt cold despite the stale underground air.

"That is a reasonable question."

"Your Majesty..."

"Continue." His jaw tightened painfully.

"Some believed that if you were alive, no prison should have held you forever. Some argued that if the Archmage truly defeated you, perhaps the Queen they followed was gone regardless of whether your body survived." Dark mana moved beneath my skin. I suppressed it before it could spread. Ren's hand remained beside mine. Vael watched me with obvious pain.

"Others continued believing you would return. That disagreement divided the surviving forces. Then grief did what grief often does when it has nowhere useful to go."

"It became anger," Ren said quietly. Vael nodded. I already knew the next part.

"At humanity," I said.

"Yes."

"At Ren." Vael looked across the table toward him.

"Very much." Ren gave the smallest shrug.

"Understandable." I turned my head and glared at him. He lifted both hands slightly.

"Objectively." Despite everything, I almost struck him. Then I looked back toward Vael.

"And eventually that anger turned toward me." He could not answer immediately. That silence hurt more than a shouted accusation.

"Say it," I ordered. Vael closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were wet.

"Some believed you abandoned us." The room became impossibly quiet. Water continued dripping beyond the wall. Violet lamps burned without movement. Somewhere inside our travel bag sat an enchanted spoon packed by my daughter. And in front of me sat a man who had spent years defending me from people who had finally decided I was not coming back. My chest tightened until breathing itself became difficult.

"I did not abandon you." The words came too quickly, stripped of the dignity I usually used to protect myself.

"I was sealed. I could not hear you. I could not sense you. I could not return." Vael's face crumpled with grief.

"I know that now."

"I believed all of you were gone." My voice wavered, and the weakness infuriated me enough that I clenched my jaw.

"When I escaped, I believed the rift had destroyed everything. I thought there was nothing left of my kingdom in this world except remnants inside dungeons. I did not..." My vision blurred. I blinked hard and hated that it did nothing.

"I did not know anyone was waiting." Warm fingers closed gently around mine. Ren. He did not pull me toward him or say anything foolish. He simply unfolded the hand I had clenched into a fist and held it beneath the table. I let him. Vael stared at our hands. Then back at my face. Whatever lingering suspicion he carried toward Ren changed again. Not gone. But altered. I breathed until I trusted my voice.

"You suffered because I disappeared. The fact that my absence was unwilling does not erase that suffering." Vael shook his head immediately.

"You cannot blame yourself for a prison you did not choose."

"I can acknowledge what happened without claiming I chose it." I held his gaze, refusing to let him kneel beneath the guilt gathering between us.

"You were my people. You lost your Queen without explanation. Whatever followed from that matters to me." His mouth tightened. Tears slipped down his face again, but he did not lower his head this time. For several seconds, nobody spoke. Then I straightened. The past could hurt later. Right now I needed answers.

"Tell me what happened after they stopped waiting." Vael's expression changed. That was the first moment I saw fear. Not fear of me. Fear of what he was about to tell me. Ren noticed too. His thumb stopped moving against the back of my hand, and the exhaustion in his face sharpened into attention. Vael inhaled slowly.

"The surviving forces divided into factions. Some continued searching. Others concentrated only on survival. Draeven increasingly argued that our people could not remain scattered indefinitely. He believed waiting for you had cost too many lives." My stomach tightened.

"And what did he propose instead?"

"At first, reopening a stable route home." Vael's eyes drifted toward one of the old maps on the shelf.

"The first experiments were crude. They tried restoring damaged military gates using dungeon cores because those cores were the only stable concentrations of spatial mana available in this world." Ren leaned forward.

"The anchors."

"Yes. Not all seven existed initially. They added them gradually as they learned how human dungeons behaved." The unusual rank jumps. The Special Variant. The merged dungeon. Yesterday's conclusions settled into something uglier. I felt Ren's fingers tighten once around mine before he asked, "And the old dungeon became the receiver because it still contained residue from Ria's original passage." Vael looked at him sharply.

"You discovered that."

"Yesterday." Vael exhaled.

"Then you already know more than I hoped." I leaned forward.

"Did Draeven construct the network?" Vael's silence lasted only a second.

"Yes." Anger rose inside me like black flame, but I forced it down before it could touch the room.

"All seven?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. The seventh anchor was originally a hidden observation point. This shelter became useful because the Association had already dismissed the region as harmless contamination." The cruelty of that practicality made my stomach turn.

"Then Draeven is trying to reopen the passage to our kingdom." Vael looked at me. He did not answer. My anger changed into dread.

"Vael." His gaze dropped.

"That was the original purpose." Beside me, Ren became completely still. I leaned back slightly.

"Original." Vael rubbed both palms against his knees, and for the first time since our reunion he looked like an officer who wanted desperately not to deliver the report in front of him.

"The longer we remained here, the less certain anyone became that there was still a kingdom to return to. Attempts to reach our world produced nothing. No response from old territory markers. No stable resonance. Draeven began arguing that opening a passage home would solve nothing if our homeland no longer existed as we remembered it." I felt the words like ice beneath my ribs.

"Then what does he want the network for now?" Vael's expression tightened.

"A sovereign." I stared at him. Ren's brow furrowed.

"That needs more words." Vael looked from him back to me.

"Our army did not fracture only because supplies failed. Demonic command structures were built around sovereign resonance. Your presence stabilized contracts, military formations, territorial magic, even certain species whose mana responds instinctively to a ruler of sufficient rank. Without you, everything deteriorated." I knew that. I had never considered what it meant if thousands of people were stranded in another world without the mana hierarchy their society had depended upon.

Vael continued, each word heavier than the last.

"Draeven told the survivors that if Queen Astrea were dead, then mourning her forever would kill the rest of us. If she were imprisoned permanently, the result was the same. If she had abandoned us..." His face tightened at the word, but he forced himself onward.

"... then waiting for her was weakness." My jaw clenched.

"And his solution?" Vael looked directly into my eyes.

"To create another sovereign." For a heartbeat, I did not understand. Then every discovery of the last few weeks rearranged itself. Monster mutations. Dungeon cores pushed beyond natural limits. Special Variants. Merged territories. The old dungeon feeding inward. My residual mana inside the receiver. I slowly withdrew my hand from Ren's, not because I wanted distance from him, but because both of mine had begun trembling.

"You cannot manufacture a sovereign," I said. Vael's expression told me I was wrong.

"Not naturally." The cold spreading through me deepened. Ren's voice became very quiet.

"What did they use?"

"I do not know the full process. I left before the final stages." Vael swallowed.

"But I know Draeven collected demon cores from our dead, dungeon cores from this world, high-density abyssal creatures, fragments of old military rituals..." His gaze moved toward me, and shame entered his face.

"... and remnants of your mana from the original crossing." The dead dungeon recognizing me. My old resonance buried inside the receiver. I understood. They were not merely opening a gate with my mana. They were using it as a template. A wave of nausea struck so suddenly that I had to steady one hand against the table. Ren noticed immediately. His chair shifted closer, but he did not touch me until I reached toward him first. My fingers caught his sleeve. He let me hold it. Vael's voice dropped.

"Your Majesty, I do not know what they have created. Only what they intended. Draeven believed that if the demons stranded here could no longer have Astrea..." His next words arrived reluctantly.

"... they would build a king powerful enough to replace her." I closed my eyes. Not Queen. King. Perhaps deliberately. Perhaps because the figure humanity feared three years ago had been remembered as the Demon King. Perhaps because Draeven wanted a symbol untouched by the sovereign he believed had failed him. The irony was disgusting. When I opened my eyes, Ren was watching me carefully. No jokes now. No lazy smile.

His entire face had sharpened into the expression I had once seen from the opposite side of a battlefield. I remembered why the demons hated him. I also remembered why standing beside him made me feel safer. Vael looked toward me again.

"I tried to stop them. So did Seris and Morcant. Others joined us initially, but the closer Draeven came to producing results, the more desperate demons followed him. They were tired, Your Majesty. Some had lost everyone. He offered them a ruler, a road home, and someone to blame."

"And you left," I said.

"Yes. When I learned they intended to use your remaining mana as the foundation, I refused to participate. Draeven called me a servant waiting for a ghost." Pain crossed his face.

"I told him I would rather wait for my Queen than kneel to something built from corpses." My vision blurred again. This time I did not immediately fight it. Vael was alive. Seris and Morcant were alive. Others were alive too, even if some had become enemies. My people had not vanished. They had broken. There was a difference. And broken things could sometimes be repaired. Not always. But sometimes. I released Ren's sleeve and rose from the chair. Vael immediately started to stand as well, but I lifted one hand.

"Stay seated." He obeyed, watching me carefully. I walked toward the small shelf of maps because I needed several breaths before trusting myself to speak. The chamber walls were rough beneath the violet light. Every repaired weapon, every ration container, every salvaged human tool told the same story of three years spent surviving in silence. I had not abandoned them deliberately. That truth mattered. It did not erase this room. When I turned back, both men were watching me.

Vael with the loyalty of someone who had waited too long. Ren with the patience of someone who knew better than to rescue me from an emotion I needed to face.

"I cannot undo the years I was gone," I said.

"I cannot return the dead, and I will not insult them by pretending my explanation makes their suffering meaningless. But Draeven does not get to turn that suffering into permission to destroy another world." Vael's face tightened with emotion. I continued before he could bow.

"The demons who followed him because they were frightened are still my people. Those who simply want to survive are my people. Even those who resent me have the right to demand answers from their Queen." My voice hardened as dark mana stirred faintly around my shoulders.

"But anyone using civilians, dungeons, my dead soldiers, or my mana to manufacture a sovereign will answer to me personally." For the first time, Vael smiled properly. It was exhausted. Wet-eyed. But unmistakably proud.

"There she is." I stared at him. Vael's smile faltered as old survival instincts returned.

"Forgive me, Your Majesty." Ren covered his mouth. I turned toward him.

"Do not."

"I said nothing."

"Your face did."

"That sounds familiar." I glared until he looked away. Annoying man. The knot inside my chest loosened just enough to breathe. Vael stood more carefully this time.

"There are additional records here. Routes, probable locations of loyal survivors, the anchors I managed to observe, and names of officers who joined Draeven. I can show you everything."

"You will," I replied.

"Then you are coming with us." He blinked.

"With you?"

"Yes." His gaze moved toward Ren, then back to me.

"To the human city."

"To my home." Vael looked genuinely alarmed now.

"Your Majesty, I can remain here. Bringing a demon into a residential area creates unnecessary risk, especially if humans discover—""Hikari already decided you may come for dinner if you are nice." Vael stopped. I stopped too. I had not intended to say that. Ren's face lit with immediate betrayal. Slowly, I turned toward him. He smiled.

"You remembered."

"Silence." Vael looked between us with growing confusion.

"Hikari is one of your daughters?"

"The youngest," I replied, recovering what remained of my dignity. Ren leaned back in his chair and added, "She speaks in third person, carries the spoon, and has already given you conditional dinner clearance. Honestly, you're doing well." Vael glanced toward our travel bag. A faint metallic clink came from inside when the fabric shifted. His eyes narrowed.

"Is the spoon actually in there?" Ren and I looked at the bag. Then at each other. I sighed.

"Yes." For several long seconds, Vael said nothing. Then, unexpectedly, his mouth twitched. A small laugh escaped him. It sounded rusty. Unused. But real. That sound did more to convince me he had survived than any scar or mana signature. Ren pointed toward him.

"See? He'll fit in."

"I have not agreed to anything," Vael protested, although the grief in his face had finally eased.

"You knelt. Hikari will consider that excellent manners."

"Why would she—""Do not ask," I told him.

"It will only create additional questions." Vael stared at me. Then at Ren. Then back at the worn shelter where he had spent years waiting for a dead Queen. His expression slowly changed.

"You truly have a home here." The words were quiet. Not accusatory. That somehow made them harder. I thought of Ruri preparing our supplies, Karin planning imaginary battles, Hikari standing half asleep in the kitchen while tiny spoon blessed us. I thought of shared dinners, grocery arguments, Ruruka laughing on our couch, and Ren lying beside me in a bed that no longer felt like enemy territory no matter how much I pretended otherwise.

"Yes," I said. Vael lowered his gaze.

"And your kingdom?" The question cut much deeper. I walked back toward the table and stopped beside him.

"I do not know what remains of it. That is a truth I will eventually have to face. But if my people survived here, then they are not disposable simply because I found another home." Vael looked up. I held his gaze.

"I will not choose one by abandoning the other." Something in his expression broke again, although this time the tears came with a faint smile. He bowed his head. Not kneeling. Better.

"As you command, Your Majesty." Ren rose beside me and stretched his shoulders carefully.

"Great. We found our demon, uncovered a conspiracy, discovered someone is manufacturing a replacement Demon King, and now we're bringing an intelligence officer home for dinner." I looked at him.

"That summary was offensively casual."

"It's how I process trauma." Vael glanced toward him.

"Is he always like this?"

"Yes." Ren looked wounded.

"You answered too quickly."

"Three years of combat experience."

"We haven't been fighting for three years."

"Marriage counts." Vael's eyes moved between us. Then, to my surprise, he laughed again. The sound filled the tiny stone shelter, mingling with dripping water and the faint hum of old demonic lamps. For the first time since hearing Your Majesty again, the weight inside my chest did not feel entirely like grief. One of my people was alive. Somewhere beyond this mountain, more might be waiting. Some might hate me. Some might follow Draeven. Some might have done things I could never forgive. But they existed.

I had believed there was nothing left of the kingdom I lost. I had been wrong. And when the time came to face what remained of my past, I would not do it as the woman who disappeared three years ago. Astrea was still their Queen. But Ria Arclight had a husband waiting beside her, three daughters expecting us home, an injured swordswoman who would undoubtedly demand every detail, and an enchanted spoon currently hidden in our lunch bag. It was an absurd life. A complicated life. A life I had never intended to build.

And I was going back to it. With one more demon for dinner, apparently.
