Chương 44: Chapter 43: Household Function

The road back from the Saitama Branch Guild felt quieter than the road going there. Not peaceful. Quiet. There was a difference. On the way to the guild, I had spent most of the drive coaching a former Demon Queen on how not to accidentally reveal that she was a former Demon Queen. That alone had been stressful enough to qualify as light cardio.

On the way back, the coaching was over, Aaron had met Ria, Ria had somehow survived the meeting without saying "my kingdom" directly in front of him, and we had left with more questions than answers. Which was impressive. We already had too many questions. The sealed dungeon was fluctuating again. The pillars from the first anomaly used ancient demonic scripture. The merged dungeon had two cores. The Chiba school gate had produced a Soul Reaper Special Variant.

The Saitama dungeon had overlapped Arcane Structures with an Abyssal Domain. And Ria, who was currently sitting beside me in the passenger seat with the posture of a queen evaluating public transportation, had looked at the symbols and understood them. That was good. That was also very bad. Good because we finally had someone who could read the evidence.

Bad because the evidence apparently belonged to the same general category of things that had dragged her kingdom into this world, forced her forces into a war, and eventually led to me sealing her for three years. Awkward history. Very awkward. The late afternoon sun cut across the road in warm strips. Traffic had slowed near an intersection, giving us just enough time to be stuck with our thoughts. I hated that. Thoughts were worse when trapped in a car. They had nowhere to go, so they circled.

Ria broke the silence first.

"The meeting was inefficient." I glanced at her.

"That's your first comment?"

"Yes."

"I thought it went well."

"It went better than expected because the guild master is not entirely incompetent."

"That's your compliment?"

"It is generous."

"He'd be honored."

"He should be." I sighed. Ria looked out the window again. Her reflection in the glass looked calm, but I knew better now. Calm for Ria did not always mean relaxed. Sometimes it meant she was arranging information behind her eyes like soldiers on a battlefield. She was thinking about the symbols. The pillars. The sealed dungeon. Her kingdom.

"So," I said, "about what Aaron showed me."

"The sealed dungeon fluctuation."

"Yeah."

"You said it may connect to my arrival."

"It might." She did not answer immediately. Her fingers rested lightly on her lap, but the tips had gone still.

"That place," she said after a while, "is where your world first touched mine violently."

"That's one way to put it."

"It is the accurate way."

"Fair."

"When the rift opened, it did not feel natural. I said this before, but your meeting with the guild master made it clearer." She turned her head slightly toward me.

"You speak of dungeon anomalies as if the normal ones are understandable. Rank elevation, terrain distortion, boss mismatch, special variants. To me, the existence of dungeons itself is already an anomaly." I nodded slowly.

"Honestly, you're not wrong."

"I am rarely wrong."

"Let's not ruin the moment." She ignored that.

"A dungeon is not merely a space. It is a folded territory. A pocket of rules that insists on existing inside another world. Monsters, terrain, cores, reward structures, exits, pressure limits. Your society has normalized the absurd because it has lived beside the absurd long enough to assign paperwork to it."

"That might be the most accurate description of the Hunter Association I've ever heard."

"It is an insult."

"Still accurate." Ria's gaze returned to the road ahead.

"If someone can alter dungeons, merge domains, or use them as anchors, then they are not simply manipulating monsters. They are manipulating rules." I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

"Yeah."

"And if those scriptures truly involve summoning vessels, origin binding, and domain stabilization, then whoever is behind this may be attempting to connect places that should not touch." Like her kingdom. Like the sealed dungeon. Like whatever had created that old breach. I did not say it aloud. She did not either. A moment passed. Then her stomach made the smallest sound. Very small. Barely noticeable. I noticed. Ria went completely still. I looked forward. Very carefully. Very wisely.

"Dinner," I said. Her eyes shifted toward me.

"What?"

"What should we get for dinner?" She stared. I kept my face neutral. I was not smiling. I was absolutely not smiling. I wanted to continue living.

"The children will expect food," I added.

"Ruruka too. If we go straight home with nothing planned, Karin will suggest cookies as a side dish, Hikari will agree because tiny spoon likes cookies, and Ruri will try to build a balanced meal out of crackers and guilt." Ria's expression remained dignified. Her stomach had betrayed her, but her pride was rebuilding defenses at remarkable speed.

"We can stop for ingredients."

"Grocery?"

"Yes."

"Together?" Her eyes narrowed.

"Do not make it strange."

"I was not making it strange."

"You sounded like you were preparing to."

"I'm impressed you can hear future stupidity."

"It is loud around you."

"Fair." The turn signal clicked as I moved into the lane toward a supermarket.

"What should we make?" I asked.

"Something warm. The swordswoman is recovering. Soup would be practical."

"We had soup recently."

"Recovery does not care about variety."

"The kids do."

"Karin cares about crunchy things, Hikari cares about softness and emotional spoon compatibility, and Ruri cares about everyone eating properly. A stew would satisfy more requirements." I thought about that.

"Cream stew?" Ria considered it like we were discussing military logistics.

"Acceptable."

"With chicken?"

"Yes. Vegetables. Mushrooms. Bread on the side."

"Karin will ask for something crunchy."

"Then we buy salad toppings."

"Are croutons a weapon?"

"In Karin's hands, perhaps." I pulled into the supermarket parking lot. For a second after turning off the engine, neither of us moved. Then I realized something. We had gone from discussing domain manipulation, demonic scripture, and sealed dungeon fluctuations to debating whether croutons counted as a tactical hazard. That was my life now. Ria opened the door.

"Come, Mage. Dinner waits for no one."

"You're really committed to that phrase."

"It is useful."

"It sounds like something written on a battlefield banner."

"Perhaps it should be." We entered the supermarket together. And immediately became a normal couple. Terrifying thought. Not actually normal, of course. I was a retired archmage with too many secrets, and she was the former Demon Queen wearing a legal identity I had helped forge while hidden under Arcane Concealment. But from the outside, we probably looked like a tired husband and a frighteningly elegant wife shopping for dinner on a Sunday. That was somehow more surreal than fighting two bosses.

Ria took the shopping basket from me. I looked at my empty hand.

"I can carry it."

"You carry poorly."

"How does someone carry a basket poorly?"

"You place heavy items without structural awareness."

"It's a basket, not a fortress."

"Anything can collapse if handled by fools."

"This is about the melon from last time, isn't it?"

"You crushed the bread."

"The melon rolled."

"Because you placed it like an idiot." I decided not to argue further. Marriage, even fake-paperwork marriage, apparently had grocery jurisdiction. We reached the vegetable section first. Ria inspected carrots with the cold focus of a ruler choosing generals. She rejected three.

"What's wrong with those?"

"Texture."

"You touched them for half a second."

"That was enough."

"You can judge carrots by touch?"

"Can you not?"

"I usually judge by price." She looked at me like I had confessed a crime.

"Of course you do."

"Price matters."

"Quality matters."

"Budget matters."

"Children eating properly matters."

"Grocery bills also matter." She placed selected carrots into the basket.

"Then earn more." I stared at her.

"I was an archmage."

"Were. Now you are a father."

"That pays worse."

"Then improve household finances."

"You sound like the tax office."

"I sound correct." We moved to potatoes. Ria chose them efficiently. Too efficiently. She had become disturbingly competent at groceries in a very short time. I remembered when she first looked at supermarket shelves like they were arranged by uncultured peasants. Now she compared sizes, checked freshness, and scolded me when I reached for discounted produce too quickly. Character development was terrifying. At the mushroom section, we encountered disagreement.

"Not those," Ria said.

"They're cheaper."

"They look tired."

"Mushrooms always look tired."

"These look defeated."

"I relate to them."

"Do not feed the children your emotional kin."

"That was ruthless."

"Accurate." She picked the better mushrooms. I watched the price difference and felt spiritual pain. Ria noticed.

"Do not make that face."

"This face is grief."

"It is weakness."

"It is grocery economics."

"It is unbecoming."

"You used to rule a kingdom. Did you not have budgets?"

"I had treasurers."

"So you outsourced grief."

"Naturally." At the meat section, I chose chicken. Ria examined it.

"This is fine." The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

"Only fine?"

"Acceptable."

"I'm honored on behalf of the chicken."

"Do not speak for the dead." A nearby old woman slowly turned toward us. I bowed slightly.

"My wife is serious about ingredients." Ria's head turned toward me with terrifying slowness. The old woman smiled.

"That's good. A wife who takes food seriously keeps the family healthy." Ria froze. I froze. The old woman continued happily, "You two have children?"

"Three daughters," I said before thinking. Ria's eyes moved toward me. Not angry. Just caught. The old woman beamed.

"Oh my, then you need plenty. Children eat more when the food is made with care." Ria recovered first.

"They do." Her voice was softer than expected. The old woman nodded in approval and moved along. For several seconds, we stood in front of the chicken like idiots. Then Ria placed another pack in the basket. I blinked.

"That's more than we need."

"The old woman said children eat more when food is made with care."

"You listened to a stranger?"

"She was correct."

"You just liked being praised as a good wife." Ria's eyes sharpened.

"Mage." I held up both hands.

"Sorry. Good paperwork wife."

"That is not better."

"Good mother?" She paused. Only a fraction. Then placed the chicken in the basket with unnecessary force.

"Acceptable correction." I looked away before my face betrayed me. Dangerous. Very dangerous. We bought bread, milk, cream, salad vegetables, croutons after negotiating a quantity limit, and fruit because Ruri would ask if we had any. Ria added jelly cups for Hikari without comment. I added a small pack of spicy crackers for Karin. Ria noticed.

"Snack bribery?"

"Morale maintenance."

"Hm. Acceptable." She added tea. I added coffee. She looked at it.

"No."

"What do you mean no?"

"You have enough coffee."

"That sentence makes no sense."

"You are recovering."

"Coffee helps recovery."

"Lies."

"It helps morale."

"Your morale is over-caffeinated." I placed the coffee back with the despair of a man burying a friend. Ria watched, satisfied. Then, after three steps, she picked a smaller coffee pack from another shelf and placed it in the basket. I stared at it. Then at her. She did not look at me.

"For emergency use." I tried not to smile. Failed slightly. She noticed.

"Do not make that face."

"What face?"

"The one that suggests gratitude."

"Would you prefer resentment?"

"Yes."

"Thank you." She lightly smacked my arm with the shopping list.

"Mage." By the time we reached checkout, we had argued about carrots, mushrooms, coffee, bread integrity, crouton risk, whether children needed dessert on a Sunday, and whether Ruruka should be allowed spicy food while recovering. Ria said no. I said probably no. That counted as agreement. The cashier smiled politely as we placed everything on the belt.

"Family dinner?"

"Yes," Ria said before I could answer. Again, too natural. I looked at her. She looked away. The cashier smiled wider.

"That's nice." I paid. Financial pain returned. Ria carried one bag. I carried two. She judged my posture all the way to the car.

"You are leaning."

"The bags are heavy."

"The heavier one is mine."

"I'm injured."

"You keep using that selectively."

"It's all I have."

"Pathetic."

"Still carrying."

"Barely." We got back into Fluffy and drove home. The entire detour had been so domestic that it began feeling suspicious. There should have been a monster attack or a sudden guild call. Nothing happened. We just drove with groceries in the back and a silent agreement that dinner mattered more than thinking about ancient dungeon scripture for at least the next few hours. When we reached the condominium, the sound of chaos greeted us before the door fully opened. Not disaster chaos. Household chaos.

Important difference.

"We're back," I called. Hikari's voice answered first.

"Papa! Mama!" She ran into the entrance hall with tiny spoon in one hand. Karin followed, holding what appeared to be a cardboard shield. Ruri came after them with a notebook. Ruruka appeared last from the living room, moving too casually for someone still recovering. Ria noticed immediately.

"Swordswoman." Ruruka froze. I froze too, mostly out of sympathy. Ruruka straightened slowly.

"I was only walking to greet you."

"You were told to rest."

"I rested."

"For how long?" Ruruka glanced at Ruri. Ruri checked her notebook.

"Twenty-three minutes." Ria's gaze sharpened.

"That is not enough." Ruruka looked betrayed by documentation.

"Nieces should not be this precise." Ruri smiled politely.

"Mama told me to record properly." I placed the grocery bags down.

"Ria, you weaponized Ruri."

"She was already sharp. I merely gave her structure." Karin raised her cardboard shield.

"I guarded Auntie."

"With that?"

"It is hospital defense prototype."

"No weapons indoors."

"It is cardboard."

"Cardboard becomes weaponized through intent." Karin lowered it slowly.

"…Fair." Hikari lifted tiny spoon.

"Hospital director says Auntie needs sitting." Ruruka looked at the spoon.

"Director is strict today."

"Hikari thinks Director learned from Mama."

"Then I fear for us all," I said. Ria walked into the living room, set down her bag, and surveyed the entire household like a commander returning to a frontline base. Then she clapped her hands once. Everyone went still. Even me. Especially me.

"We are establishing recovery house rules." I blinked.

"We are?"

"Yes." Ruruka sat down immediately. Wise. The children gathered around the carpet. Hikari sat beside tiny spoon. Karin crossed her legs and looked ready for orders. Ruri opened her notebook to a fresh page. I stood near the grocery bags and considered quietly escaping to the kitchen. Ria looked at me.

"Do not move." I stopped. Terrifying. Ria stood in front of the low table, arms crossed, elegant and severe.

"Rule one. The swordswoman cannot stand without permission unless the building is burning, the children are endangered, or the mage has collapsed." Ruruka opened her mouth. Ria lifted one finger.

"Complaints will be ignored." Ruruka closed her mouth. Ruri wrote it down. Hikari nodded seriously. Karin raised her hand.

"What if Auntie needs bathroom?" Ria paused.

"Permission granted for necessary biological functions." Karin nodded.

"Good rule." I murmured, "Glad we clarified." Ria looked at me.

"Rule two. The mage cannot say 'I'm fine' unless verified by me or by visible evidence agreed upon by Ruri." Ruri looked up.

"Me?"

"You are observant." Ruri's cheeks pinked.

"I will do my best." I raised a hand.

"What if I am actually fine?" Ria stared. Ruri stared. Karin stared. Hikari stared. Ruruka stared. I lowered my hand.

"Okay." Ria continued.

"Rule three. Karin cannot build hospital defense weapons indoors." Karin frowned.

"What about defensive architecture?"

"Define."

"Walls, safe zones, emergency snack bunkers."

"Allowed if made from soft materials and not blocking walkways." Karin considered this.

"Acceptable."

"Rule four. Hikari's tiny spoon has no medical authority unless supervised by an adult." Hikari gasped.

"Hikari thinks tiny spoon is responsible."

"Tiny spoon lacks medical certification."

"Hikari can supervise tiny spoon."

"You are six."

"Hikari is careful." Ria softened slightly.

"Then tiny spoon may provide emotional authority, not medical authority." Hikari thought about it, then nodded.

"Hikari accepts."

"Rule five. Ruri is allowed to rest too and cannot manage everyone all day." Ruri froze.

"I am not tired." Everyone looked at her. Her shoulders lowered.

"…Maybe a little." Ria's voice became quieter.

"Then you will rest." Ruri nodded.

"Yes, Mama." Ria cleared her throat and immediately resumed her queenly tone.

"Rule six. I am not worried. I am maintaining household function." Ruruka looked at her. I looked at her. The children looked at her. Karin raised her hand.

"That sounds like worried."

"It is not." Hikari tilted her head.

"Hikari thinks Mama worries beautifully." Ria froze. Ruri wrote something in her notebook. Ria's gaze snapped to her.

"What did you write?" Ruri smiled innocently.

"Rule six: Mama worries beautifully."

"That is not what I said."

"It is what Hikari said."

"Do not record enemy propaganda." Ruruka covered her mouth. I tried. I really tried. I failed. A laugh escaped. Ria turned toward me slowly.

"Mage."

"I'm injured."

"That excuse expires in two hours."

"Can we extend it?"

"No." Karin grinned.

"Papa violated something."

"I didn't."

"You laughed at Mama."

"That's survival instinct failing, not violation." Ria's eyes narrowed.

"Rule seven. The mage cannot check guild reports before dinner." My body went cold.

"Wait."

"No."

"I need to see if Aaron sent the files."

"You may check one message after dinner."

"What if it's urgent?"

"If it is urgent, the guild master will call."

"He might message first."

"Then his urgency is poorly designed."

"That is not how phones work."

"It is how this household works." Hikari pointed tiny spoon at me.

"Emotional director says Papa rest." Karin stood proudly.

"I'll enforce Rule Seven." Ruri looked at my tablet on the shelf, then quietly picked it up and held it against her chest.

"Sorry, Papa. Mama said no reports before dinner." I stared at my daughters. Then at Ruruka. Ruruka smiled from the couch.

"Nii-sama, your authority is gone."

"It left months ago." Ria nodded.

"Good. It was poorly maintained." The household accepted that without objection. Pain. Deep, administrative pain. Dinner preparation became an organized disaster. Ria led the cooking. I chopped vegetables under supervision because apparently my knife work was"safe but spiritually lazy." Ruri rested at the table while still somehow giving helpful suggestions. Karin tore lettuce leaves with the seriousness of a soldier preparing battlefield supplies.

Hikari arranged spoons and assigned tiny spoon a safe observation post away from hot surfaces. Ruruka remained seated on the couch. Mostly. "Papa."

"What?"

"Reports."

"I was checking the time."

"The clock is there." She pointed to the wall. I looked at the clock. Defeated by architecture.

"Right." Ria called from the stove, "Do not make me confiscate your eyes, Mage."

"That is not medically possible."

"Do not test my creativity." I returned to chopping. Ruruka laughed quietly from the couch, then immediately clutched her ribs and muttered an apology before Ruri could scold her. Dinner smelled good. Too good. Chicken cream stew, warm bread, salad with controlled croutons, fruit, and jelly cups for dessert. The table filled slowly, and with every dish placed down, the house felt less like it was recovering from danger and more like it was simply living. That mattered. Maybe more than reports. Maybe.

We ate together. Ruruka was allowed to sit at the table after passing Ria's movement inspection. Hikari sat beside her and reminded her to eat slowly. Karin tried to negotiate for extra croutons and lost to Ria in under five seconds. Ruri finally ate without checking everyone else's plates first because Ria placed food in front of her and said, "You are not staff." Ruri smiled.

"Yes, Mama." Halfway through dinner, Karin looked at me.

"Papa."

"Yeah?"

"Did you defeat the reports?"

"No." She frowned.

"Why not?"

"Reports cannot be defeated. Only delayed." Ria took a sip of water.

"Pathetic enemy."

"You say that now, but wait until they ask for incident timelines."

"I would answer properly."

"That's why they fear you."

"They should." Hikari held her spoon carefully.

"Mama protected Papa from paperwork monsters?" Ria glanced at me.

"Temporarily."

"Hikari thanks Mama."

"You are welcome." Ruruka looked between us with that dangerous expression again.

"So the administrative mission went well?"

"It was a guild meeting," I said. Ria said, "It was tolerable." Ruruka smiled.

"Together." I pointed my spoon at her.

"Recover quietly." She smiled wider.

"Yes, Nii-sama." After dinner, the girls helped clear the table. Ria allowed it because everyone had eaten properly, and because the children insisted that family dinner meant family cleaning. I washed dishes. Ria dried. Ruri carried safe items. Karin carried spoons because plates had been deemed too dangerous after last week's "plate transport mission." Hikari supervised tiny spoon's emotional authority from the chair. It was stupid. It was warm. It was ours. Later, the house settled.

Ruruka rested on the couch with a blanket. The girls played quietly near her, building a softer version of the hospital castle using cushions instead of cardboard defenses. Ria finally allowed me to check one message from Aaron. One. She stood over me while I opened it.

"No hovering," I said.

"I am supervising."

"You are hovering with authority."

High-resolution, better angles, restored contrast. I opened one. Ria leaned closer. Her expression changed almost immediately. Not much. But enough.

"What?" She took the tablet from my hand.

"Hey." She ignored me, zooming into one symbol near the base of the pillar. I leaned closer too. It looked similar to the ones from earlier, but not identical. A curved mark intersected a vertical line surrounded by smaller binding strokes. Ria's eyes narrowed.

"That one does not mean summoning." Ruruka looked over from the couch. The girls continued playing, unaware. I kept my voice low.

"Then what does it mean?" Ria stared at the symbol for a few seconds longer.

"Invitation." The room seemed to dim by one shade. Ruruka's expression turned serious. I felt my stomach tighten. Invitation. Not summoning. Not forcibly dragging something in. Inviting it. That was worse in a different way. Ria closed the tablet before I could look longer.

"Dinner is over. You checked one message." I stared at her.

"Ria."

"No."

"That was important."

"It will remain important tomorrow."

"That's not how danger works."

"It is how recovery works." Ruruka, from the couch, spoke quietly.

"She's right, Nii-sama." I looked at my little sister. She held my gaze.

"You said next week. Let your body last until then." That was unfair. Reasonable. But unfair. Hikari looked up from the cushion castle.

"Papa?" Her voice pulled the room back. I looked at her.

"Yeah?"

"Is Papa doing reports?" Ria answered before me.

"No. Papa is resting." Karin pointed at the cushion fort.

"Then Papa can inspect the hospital castle." Ruri smiled.

"Only if he sits." I looked at the tablet. Then at Ria. Then at Ruruka. Then at the girls. The symbol waited inside the closed screen. Invitation. The old sealed dungeon was fluctuating. Someone was knocking. Or someone had been invited. I hated waiting. But I also hated the look Hikari got when she thought I might leave again. So I placed the tablet on the table.

"Fine." Ria's shoulders eased slightly. Victory for the household. Defeat for me. A reasonable trade. I sat on the carpet beside the girls and inspected the cushion hospital castle. Karin explained the defensive layout. Hikari showed me tiny spoon's emotional office. Ruri reminded me to sit properly. Ruruka watched from the couch with a soft smile. Ria stood near the kitchen for a moment, arms crossed, pretending she had only won an argument. But I saw the way she looked at the girls. At Ruruka. At me. Not worried.

Maintaining household function. Sure. If that lie helped her sleep, I would let it live. For now. Astrea's POV The mage was worse than a wounded beast. A wounded beast knew when to retreat. Ren Arclight, however, had the survival instincts of a man who believed exhaustion could be negotiated with.

He would bleed, heal others first, fight bosses, hide injuries from children, attend reports, and then attempt to read dangerous files before dinner as if his body had submitted a written agreement to continue functioning. Foolish man. Useful. Powerful. Protective. Foolish. The household needed rules. That was obvious. The swordswoman was no better. Ruruka claimed to be recovered while moving like broken glass trying to imitate a sword.

She smiled when the children worried, apologized when pain showed, and attempted to stand whenever anyone carried something heavier than a spoon. Clearly, Arclight blood carried a defect. The children watched too closely. Ruri tried to manage everyone. Karin wanted to defend everyone. Hikari wanted everyone to stay where she could see them. Without structure, this house would collapse into concern. So I made rules. Naturally, they resisted. Naturally, I won.

The mage complained the most, which meant the rules were correct. Ruruka pretended to accept them while searching for loopholes, which meant she required monitoring. Karin immediately began converting the rules into military command language, which was expected. Hikari accepted tiny spoon's reduced authority with impressive dignity. Ruri wrote everything down, including the slanderous phrase "Mama worries beautifully." I would remove that line later. Perhaps. Dinner helped. It always did, irritatingly enough.

Food settled frightened children. Warm dishes softened sharp silences. Shared meals reminded everyone that the house still existed after dungeons, hospitals, reports, and dangerous symbols. I had ruled armies and sat in war councils, yet somehow a table with three daughters, one injured swordswoman, and one exhausted mage required more delicate management than a battlefield. At least battlefields did not ask for extra croutons. Karin asked twice. I denied twice.

The mage, of course, attempted to use humor as a shield. He joked about reports. He acted lazy. He made his tired eyes half-lidded and careless so the children would not see the weight behind them. I saw it. The swordswoman saw it too. Even little Ruri, though she tried not to stare. When Aaron's message arrived, I allowed the mage one glance because forbidding everything would only make him more restless. He opened the high-resolution pillar images, and I looked because the matter did concern me.

The symbol was clear this time. Too clear. The earlier photographs had been poor, cracked, angled badly, and handled by someone with no respect for ancient inscription preservation. The mage had apparently taken two of them. That explained much. But this one… This one was not summoning script. It was older. More formal. An invitation mark. A request written into space.
