Ria's POV The artificial pulse continued every forty-one seconds. There was no sound attached to the graph on Aaron's tablet, yet after staring at the repeating rise and fall for long enough, my mind had begun supplying one anyway. A dull, imaginary beat accompanied each spike, unsettling precisely because Ren had already explained that nothing beneath the seven anchors possessed a heart. Not yet. The Sovereign Vessel was not conscious.

It had no identity, no will, no awareness of the stolen power being forced through its artificial channels. Draeven had merely reached the stage where his creation could endure repeated circulation without tearing itself apart. That should have made the problem feel smaller. Instead, it made it worse. A thing did not need to be alive if someone was patiently teaching it how. Vael sat at the dining table surrounded by objects from a life I had once known better than the one around me now.

Three narrow metal plates lay beside a strip of dark cloth bearing the faded insignia of the Ninth Intelligence Division. Their surfaces were scratched with tiny markings that would have appeared meaningless to anyone unfamiliar with old Velmoran field codes. Vael had spent nearly twenty minutes arranging them into a pattern while carefully feeding controlled traces of demonic mana between the pieces. Across the room, Ren stood near the balcony door with his phone pressed against one ear.

His gaze periodically moved toward the living room, where our daughters had returned to the less threatening concerns of homework and whatever architectural catastrophe Hikari had created with crayons.

"You busy?" Ren asked into the phone. Ruruka's answer was loud enough that I heard the suspicion even without understanding every word. Ren's expression remained flat as he looked toward the girls and explained that we needed her to watch them for several hours. The suspicion on the other end immediately became accusation. Ren sighed.

"Probably dangerous." I looked toward him. He noticed and gave me the smallest shrug, as though probably dangerous was somehow the responsible description. Ruruka said something much sharper.

"Vael found a way to contact another survivor," Ren continued.

"Seris. Ria needs to be there personally." The voice on the phone quieted. That was enough to tell me Ruruka understood.

"How long?" she asked, more clearly this time.

"Don't know." Another short pause followed before Ren nodded to himself.

"Yeah. Thanks." Then, because apparently an Arclight conversation could not end without somebody deliberately irritating somebody else, he added, "And you're not fighting anything while you're here." Ruruka's answer came through the speaker immediately.

"I'm babysitting, Nii-sama!"

"You make ordinary activities unnecessarily athletic."

"That happened once!"

"You jumped off the balcony with Karin."

"She wanted to see if I could land!" I closed my eyes. Across the table, Vael slowly looked up from his signal plates. Ren remained unimpressed.

"Still not normal."

"I landed!"

"That was not the important part." I recognized that argument well enough to know it would continue indefinitely if someone did not end it. Ren evidently reached the same conclusion and told his sister to come over before disconnecting the call. Vael watched him put the phone away with the careful expression of a man who had survived years inside enemy territory only to discover that the Arclight household presented dangers no intelligence training had prepared him for.

"Your sister frequently leaps from balconies while carrying Princess Karin?" he asked.

"No," Ren replied as he slipped the phone into his pocket.

"Frequently would be concerning." Vael's expression did not improve.

"That explanation has somehow made the incident worse, Sire."

"Stop asking questions."

"For once," I said, returning my attention to the old signal equipment, "I agree with him." Ren looked offended. I ignored him. Vael's hands resumed moving through the coded arrangement, but my attention remained fixed on the scratched insignia beneath his fingers.

"How long until Seris answers?" His movements slowed slightly.

"I cannot promise that she will." I looked at him. Vael exhaled before continuing.

"Seris stopped using our regular channels roughly a year after I left Draeven's main faction. She occasionally answered emergency signals afterward, but never on a pattern anyone could predict. Eventually she stopped wishing to be found at all." That was different from saying he had simply lost her. I understood the distinction. I disliked it anyway. My gaze dropped toward one of the Ninth Division symbols. Seris had always memorized codes faster than anyone else. Mostly because she cheated.

The memory arrived with such clarity that, for a moment, the dining room disappeared. Two girls sat beneath an old cedar tree in the western palace courtyard, both younger than either had any right to remain inside my memory. A training booklet rested across my knees. Seris sat beside me with an answer sheet hidden beneath one sleeve while insisting that she had merely been blessed with superior retention. I had threatened to report her.

She had reminded me that doing so would require admitting I had been looking at her answers. Neither of us told the tutor. I became aware that Vael was watching me.

"What?" He immediately returned his eyes to the signal plates.

"Nothing, Your Majesty." I narrowed mine. His posture somehow became more formal. Coward. The doorbell rang twenty minutes later, saving him from further interrogation. Ruruka arrived carrying a small overnight bag despite having received no estimate for how long we might be gone. The girls abandoned whatever they were doing almost immediately.

Karin reached her first and nearly collided with her legs, Ruri followed at a more reasonable speed with a bright smile, and Hikari emerged from beneath the coffee table carrying tiny spoon like a ceremonial staff.

"Auntie!" Ruruka barely had enough time to put down her bag before Karin wrapped both arms around her waist. She laughed, ruffled Karin's hair, then opened one arm for Ruri as well. Hikari arrived last and simply raised both hands toward her. Ruruka picked her up without hesitation. I had never needed to question whether she could care for them. The very idea would have been absurd. I had watched Ruruka barely conscious from injuries while still asking whether her nieces had eaten dinner.

She doted on them shamelessly, defended them instinctively, and possessed enough violence in reserve that anyone threatening those girls under her supervision deserved whatever happened next. Ruruka eventually looked past Hikari toward the table. Her expression changed when she recognized Vael's equipment and the maps that had remained scattered from Aaron's visit.

"You're leaving already?" she asked, adjusting Hikari against her hip while the child immediately began playing with the end of her ponytail.

"Yes. Vael believes the signal has a reasonable chance of reaching Seris tonight."

"Seris..." Ruruka glanced toward Vael as though searching through yesterday's debrief.

"She was one of the three who survived from your old unit, right?" Vael inclined his head.

"Yes. Lady Seris served alongside me for many years." Ruruka's attention returned to me. She studied my face for a moment before asking, more carefully, "And she was close to you?" There were many technically correct answers. Officer. Confidante. Companion. Someone who had known me before the crown had outweighed my own name. In the end, I simply said, "We grew up together." All teasing vanished from Ruruka's expression.

She did not ask whether I was prepared for the reunion or offer any meaningless promise that Seris would welcome me. Instead, she gave me one firm nod.

"Then go. I've got these three." Karin immediately looked offended.

"Why do people keep saying that like we're difficult?" Ruruka slowly looked down at her.

"Do you want the complete list or the short version?"

"The short version."

"You're difficult." Karin gasped. Ruri hid a smile behind one hand, while Hikari, apparently assuming the accusation did not include her, patted Ruruka's shoulder and announced, "Hikari is easy." Ren passed behind them while fastening one of Aaron's emergency beacons inside his jacket.

"You named a wild boar Bobo and tried to bring him home." Hikari's head snapped toward him.

"Bobo was nice."

"That wasn't the problem."

"Bobo liked Hikari." Ruruka looked at Ren.

"You know she's going to keep defending Bobo until she's thirty."

"I know." Hikari nodded solemnly.

"Bobo is friend forever." I decided immediately that this conversation had gone far enough. Vael offered me my beacon, a small black device stripped of every standard Association registration function and connected only to Aaron's private channel. I examined it briefly before noticing Ren very carefully pretending not to watch me. I clipped it beneath the inner fold of my coat. His shoulders relaxed.

"Are you satisfied?" I asked. Ren looked down at his own jacket as though the zipper required intense study.

"Wasn't my idea."

"You nearly threatened the man whose idea it was."

"I didn't threaten him."

"Your hand began glowing."

"Coincidence." I stared. Ren looked away. Ruruka, unfortunately, had heard enough to become interested.

"Wait. What did Nii-sama do?"

"Nothing," Ren answered immediately.

"Aaron suggested putting an emergency tracker on me," I said at the same time, "and your brother began unconsciously gathering Arcane in his hand." Ruruka's eyes widened before an enormous grin appeared.

"Nii-sama." Ren sighed.

"Don't."

"That is adorable."

"It was workplace safety equipment."

"You almost vaporized your friend over workplace safety equipment."

"I was calm."

"Your hand was glowing!"

"Lots of things glow." Vael wisely secured his own beacon and stepped away from the discussion. Before Ruruka could enjoy Ren's discomfort further, Hikari wriggled from her arms and came directly toward me with tiny spoon held carefully between both hands. Her expression carried the solemnity she usually reserved for injuries or household emergencies.

"Mama needs safety."

"Hikari, I am capable of protecting myself," I reminded her. She nodded readily.

"Hikari knows."

"Then why do I require the spoon?"

"Because tiny spoon helps extra." There was no hesitation whatsoever. Behind her, Ren abruptly became interested in checking whether the front door was locked. Coward. I accepted the utensil and slipped it into the inside pocket of my coat. Hikari immediately smiled and added, "Mama brings Mama's friend home too, okay?" The request caught me more effectively than it should have. I looked down at her. Hikari knew nothing about what Seris might feel toward me.

She did not know whether three years had converted affection into resentment or whether the girl I remembered would even want to hear my voice. She knew only that Mama had a friend who was missing. Therefore Mama should bring her home.

"I will try," I told her. Hikari considered the answer, then corrected me with childish certainty.

"Mama will try very hard." My mouth almost curved.

"Yes. Very hard."

"That's better." Ren opened the door before I could ask how exactly my daughter had begun supervising sovereign diplomacy. The old Ninth Division dead drop lay far enough north that Chiba gradually disappeared behind us. Apartment blocks gave way to scattered houses, then isolated roads bordered by forest. Vael directed Ren away from the main highway twice until Fluffy finally reached a neglected service route whose pavement had surrendered much of itself to weeds and potholes.

The SUV struck one hard enough to jolt Vael in the rear seat. Ren immediately patted the steering wheel.

"Sorry, Fluffy." I turned toward him.

"You apologized to the vehicle."

"Hikari named her."

"You keep saying that as though it explains why you believe the automobile possesses emotions." Ren gave me a brief glance.

"You accepted medical advice from a spoon twenty minutes ago."

"That was different."

"How?" I had no answer that improved my position. From the back seat, Vael looked from Ren to me and released a slow breath.

"Our Queen married an insane man."

"I have become aware." Ren's eyes shifted toward the rearview mirror.

"I'm still driving you."

"A fact for which I remain grateful, Sire."

"You don't sound grateful."

"I am maintaining dignity."

"Try harder." The abandoned maintenance station appeared between the trees shortly afterward. Broken windows faced the overgrown service road, moss consumed much of one exterior wall, and part of the metal roof had collapsed inward. An old dungeon route extended beyond it, officially sealed and inactive according to Aaron's records. Vael changed the instant he stepped outside. The man who had prepared breakfast, washed dishes, and addressed children as princesses disappeared.

His shoulders settled into an older posture as Commander Vael Ardyn inspected the clearing, scanned the windows, and checked the surrounding forest before approaching a rusted marker near the road. Ren watched him place one gloved palm against the metal.

"How far does the signal travel?"

"Far enough if Seris is still checking the network," Vael replied.

"Not far enough to announce our presence to every demon in the prefecture."

"Reassuring."

"It was intended to be." Three carefully spaced pulses of demonic mana moved through the clearing. I recognized the old pattern immediately: Ninth Division, alive, uncompromised, requesting contact. When Vael withdrew his hand, Ren glanced around the empty station and asked, "And now?"

"We wait." Ren stared at him. Vael stared back.

"That's the entire plan?"

"That is generally how requesting contact works, Sire." Ren sighed and leaned against Fluffy.

"I dislike intelligence work." Vael's brow rose.

"Because it requires patience?"

"Mostly because nothing explodes." I folded my arms.

"A remarkable standard for a man who complains whenever anything actually explodes."

"I contain multitudes."

"You contain laziness."

"That too." Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Wind moved through the trees while Ren's Spatial Awareness expanded quietly around the station. Vael remained near the marker with the patience of a man who had once made a profession of waiting for information. I was the one who began pacing. Ren noticed first. Of course he did.

"You're wearing a path into the road."

"I am standing."

"You've crossed the same six meters twelve times." I stopped and glared at him. His expression did not change. Vael made the mistake of hiding a faint smile. I turned toward him instead.

"Seris used to do this deliberately." Vael's expression betrayed immediate recognition.

"Arrive late?"

"To everything. Lessons. Meals. Training. Formal meetings. She claimed it made people appreciate her arrival." Ren looked interested.

"I like her already."

"You have never met her."

"She sounds reasonable."

"She was unbearable." Vael cleared his throat.

"Lady Seris once told Master Halven that predictable schedules increased assassination risk." My head turned slowly toward him.

"She told me the western courtyard clock had been calibrated incorrectly." Vael hesitated.

"That was not true, Your Majesty." I stared at him in silence. Ren laughed.

"Do not encourage this," I warned.

"I didn't do anything."

"You laughed."

"That's not encouragement. That's appreciation." I was preparing an answer when steel suddenly appeared against Vael's throat. Every trace of humor vanished. Dark mana gathered instinctively around my fingers. Ren straightened beside Fluffy, his posture changing so completely that the forest itself seemed to become more attentive. Vael alone remained still. Behind him stood a woman I had not sensed approaching. Her pale hair had been cut unevenly to her jaw.

A worn charcoal cloak covered light armor stripped of every familiar insignia, and thin scars crossed one eyebrow and disappeared beneath the collar of her clothing. She was leaner than I remembered, harder around the edges, altered by years I had not witnessed. Her eyes remained the same. Deep crimson. Sharp enough to make childhood tutors reconsider assigning homework. Alive. Seris kept her blade lightly against Vael's throat.

"You're getting careless." Vael did not even blink.

"You always did enjoy dramatic entrances."

"I was behind you for twenty-three seconds."

"I knew you were there for eighteen."

"You're getting old."

"So are you." Her eyes narrowed.

"I could cut you."

"You have said that since we were fifteen."

"And one day I may finally mean it." For one impossible moment, I almost smiled. Then Seris looked past him. She saw Ren. Everything changed. The blade left Vael's throat and swung toward the Archmage in a single smooth movement. Ren's hands remained loose at his sides, though I knew him well enough now to recognize the sudden stillness. Seris's face hardened.

"You." Ren studied the sword pointed toward his chest.

"Hi." Her expression somehow became worse.

"Ren," I said.

"I was being polite."

"That was not polite enough to justify how irritating it sounded." Seris's gaze snapped toward my voice. And stopped. The sword remained raised, but her entire body seemed to forget what came next. I had imagined this moment since Vael first spoke her name inside our apartment. I had imagined anger. Tears. Disbelief. Perhaps even hatred. I had not imagined refusal. Her eyes found my face, moved over it once, then again, as though searching for the flaw that would prove I was an illusion.

Her grip on the sword trembled slightly.

"Seris." Her breath caught.

"No." I took one step forward. She immediately moved one back. The gesture hurt more than I expected.

"Seris, it's me."

"Don't." Her voice emerged almost soundless. She swallowed, visibly trying to rebuild the discipline that had brought her silently through the forest.

"Don't say my name like that." I stopped. Seris's jaw tightened.

"Do not look at me and speak as though you left yesterday, Astrea. Do not say my name in the same voice you used when we were children and expect three years to disappear because you finally decided to stand in front of me." Ren remained completely silent. Vael lowered his gaze. Neither attempted to interfere.

I looked at the woman before me and saw, beneath every scar and defensive movement, pieces of the girl who once climbed onto my balcony because using the palace doors would have required admitting she had missed curfew.

"What would you prefer I call you?" I asked quietly. Pain crossed her face.

"That isn't fair."

"I wasn't trying to be."

"Then stop sounding like you." The answer silenced me. Seris looked away for several seconds, breathing carefully, before finally forcing herself to meet my eyes again.

"Where were you?" There was no title. No rank. Just the question. I answered it as plainly as I could.

"Ren sealed me during the final battle. The seal cut me away from everything outside it. I had no way to communicate with our forces or even confirm what remained. When I eventually returned properly, the positions we occupied were empty. The structures were abandoned. I searched what traces I could find, but I found no organized survivors." Seris's lips tightened.

"I thought all of you were dead," I finished. She stared at me before asking, "How long did you look?" I hesitated. Wrong choice. Her eyes immediately hardened.

"How long, Astrea?"

"Long enough to find nothing reliable."

"That wasn't my question."

"I know."

"Then answer it." I forced myself not to look away.

"Months." Seris laughed once, and the sound contained no amusement whatsoever.

"Months."

"I believed—""No." She raised one hand sharply.

"Do not tell me what you believed yet. I want to know when we became dead enough for you to stop." My chest tightened.

"It was never like that."

"Then what was it like?"

"I was alone. The army was gone. Every place I knew had either collapsed or been claimed by dungeons and hunters. I had no reason to believe—""No reason?" The words cracked through the clearing. Seris took two steps toward me before stopping herself.

"We waited eleven days at the western crossing because one dying soldier said he felt your mana. Eleven days. Draeven had food for five. He ordered us to move on the sixth and nearly half the survivors refused because they were convinced you would appear before sunset." I said nothing. Seris's voice dropped.

"One of them died there." The forest seemed to shrink around us. She looked directly at me.

"Do you know what his last words were?" I already knew I did not want the answer.

"No."

"He asked Vael whether you would be angry that he couldn't stand when you arrived." My fingers curled inside my sleeves. Vael closed his eyes. Seris noticed and turned on him.

"You remember."

"Yes."

"Yes."

"And then we buried him before morning." Vael's voice softened.

"I remember." Seris looked back at me, and suddenly the anger in her face seemed too exhausted to sustain itself.

"That was eleven days, Astrea. Do you want to know what three months looked like?" I swallowed.

"Tell me." Her expression flickered. Maybe she had expected a defense. Instead, she gave me the memories. A child hidden beneath collapsed masonry while a hunter patrol passed overhead. A wounded officer who refused treatment because medicine had become too scarce to spend on someone old enough to die without leaving children behind. Three soldiers who walked almost forty kilometers after hearing that a silver-haired woman had appeared near a dungeon.

"They never returned," Seris said. Her hands were shaking now, though her voice remained controlled.

"We found one weapon two weeks later. Nothing else."

"What happened to the others?"

"We don't know." She continued before I could respond. Families separated during forced relocations. Survivors sleeping inside abandoned dungeon passages because humans controlled the roads above them. People killing monsters for food because there was nothing else available. Children learning to remain silent whenever hunters passed nearby. Every few weeks, another rumor appeared. Someone had seen the Queen. Someone had felt sovereign mana.

Someone had seen a battlefield destroyed by magic no ordinary hunter could produce. Seris laughed bitterly.

"Do you know how many times I packed my things because somebody said you were alive?" I could not answer.

"Seven," she told me.

"Seven times. The first time, I ran ahead of the others. The second time, I took supplies. By the fifth, I stopped telling anyone I was going." Her eyes shifted toward Vael.

"He kept believing." Vael's expression tightened. Seris pointed toward him.

"This idiot kept saying you were alive long after everyone else began accepting the obvious." Vael did not argue.

"I had reasons."

"You had faith."

"I had both."

"I hated you for it." His eyes lowered slightly.

"I know."

"No, you don't." Seris's voice softened in a way that hurt worse than shouting.

"Every time you told me she might still be alive, I believed you. Just for a moment. And then I would go wherever the rumor led, and there would be nothing. No Astrea. No message. No sign that she had ever been there." She pressed one hand against her eyes, furious at herself for needing the gesture at all.

"I had to lose you every time, Astrea." There it was. Not Queen. Not kingdom. Me. I stepped forward without thinking. Seris immediately lowered her hand and warned, "Don't." I stopped. Her breathing remained uneven.

"You don't know what that was like." There were a dozen ways I could have defended myself. I could have explained what the seal had done to me, how completely it had severed my awareness of everything beyond it, how impossible it had seemed that anyone from Velmora could still exist after the invasion collapsed. All of those things were true. None answered her pain.

"No," I said.

"I don't." Seris stared at me. I held her gaze.

"I know what happened to me. I know why I could not return while sealed, and I know what I believed after I escaped. But I was not standing beside you at that crossing. I did not bury the people you buried. I did not follow seven rumors hoping to find someone who never appeared." Her anger faltered.

"So no," I continued.

"I do not know what that was like for you." Seris's lips parted slightly, but she said nothing. I took another careful breath.

"Tell me. If you need to tell me tomorrow, tell me tomorrow. If you are still angry next month, then be angry next month. I will not use the seal as a weapon to make your grief unreasonable." The sword in her hand lowered completely. Seris looked at me as though she had expected to find someone else standing in my place.

"You changed."

"Unfortunately." A quiet snort came from Ren. I turned. He was looking at the trees with suspicious concentration. Seris noticed.

"Was that him?"

"Yes."

"I said nothing," Ren replied.

"You made a sound."

"Could've been wildlife." Vael looked toward him.

"There are no animals immediately behind you, Sire." Ren gave him a flat look.

"Traitor." The absurdity broke something. Seris stared at Ren, then at Vael, and a breath escaped her that almost became a laugh. She stopped it quickly, but not quickly enough. I saw. So did Vael. Neither of us mentioned it. Seris finally sheathed her sword, though her attention remained suspiciously fixed on Ren.

"He sealed you."

"Yes."

"And you are simply... standing beside him now." Ren looked down at himself.

"That does appear to be what I'm doing." Seris glared.

"I was speaking to her."

"I know."

"Then stop answering."

"Sure." I pinched the bridge of my nose. Apparently, I had brought exactly the wrong husband for a delicate childhood reunion. Seris ignored him and looked at me again.

"Did he force you to stay after you escaped?"

"No."

"Did he threaten you?"

"Frequently with house rules." Ren frowned.

"Those apply to everyone."

"Your refrigerator has legislation."

"Because nobody respects civilization." Seris stared between us in disbelief.

"What happened to you?"

"I ask myself that every morning." Ren nodded.

"Same." I glared at both of them before answering the actual question.

"No, Seris. Ren did not force me to remain with him. I am not his prisoner, nor have I been for some time." She studied my face.

"Then what is he?" That question proved more difficult than the others. I looked at Ren. For once, he contributed nothing. There were dozens of irritatingly accurate descriptions available: the Archmage who defeated me, the man who sealed me, the father who somehow allowed three dragon children to turn his apartment into a kingdom of crumbs and crayons, the fool who had nearly frightened Aaron senseless because someone proposed attaching a safety beacon to me. I settled on the simplest.

"My husband." Seris froze. Vael looked away immediately. Ren scratched the side of his face. Several seconds passed before Seris finally said, very carefully, "I am going to ask you one question."

"That statement usually precedes several."

"Be quiet, Astrea." There she was. I almost smiled. Seris pointed at Ren.

"You married him?"

"Yes."

"The Archmage."

"Yes."

"The Archmage who sealed you."

"You have established his profession." Her eyes widened.

"That was not the part I was emphasizing!" Ren glanced toward Vael.

"Sounds familiar." Vael nodded gravely.

"Guild Master Aaron had a comparable reaction, Sire." I closed my eyes. Seris looked toward Vael.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Since yesterday." Her disbelief somehow deepened.

"Yesterday?"

"Her Majesty's domestic circumstances were revealed to me rapidly." Ren nodded.

"That's one way to describe it." Seris stared at Vael.

"And you are simply accepting this?" Vael folded his hands behind his back.

"I have learned that attempting to understand every event inside the Arclight household is detrimental to operational efficiency."

"You have been there one day."

"A highly educational day." That did it. Seris actually laughed. Only once, short and incredulous, but it was real. Then she immediately looked irritated that we had heard it.

"Do not interpret that as forgiveness."

"I wasn't planning to," I said.

"Good." Her eyes remained on me for another moment before she muttered, "You still have terrible judgment."

"You cheated on every intelligence examination we took before age fourteen."

"I had excellent judgment. I simply disliked unnecessary studying." Ren looked interested.

"See? I like her." Seris pointed toward him without looking away from me.

"Your husband is irritating."

"I know."

"Why did you marry him?"

"That discussion would require alcohol and several hours." Ren shrugged.

"She thinks I'm charming."

"I have never said that."

"Implied."

"I have never implied that." Vael quietly observed, "Your Majesty, perhaps we should return to Draeven." I turned toward him with genuine gratitude.

"Yes. Immediately." The change in Seris when Vael mentioned the Sovereign Vessel was immediate. Whatever remained unresolved between us did not vanish, but it moved aside for an older instinct: the ability to compartmentalize until a mission was complete. Vael unfolded the copied report across the rusted hood of an abandoned maintenance vehicle and began with the earliest anomaly.

"The first structure we can confidently connect to Draeven's research was a C-rank labyrinth investigated by the Archmage. Its original Ogre King had already been defeated, yet a concealed core remained active behind the throne. "Yes." The car became quiet. Ren did not interrupt this time. Neither did Vael. Outside, streetlights appeared more frequently as the forest gradually surrendered to the outskirts of Chiba. Eventually Seris released a slow breath.

"I do not know what I am supposed to feel about that."

"You do not have to decide tonight," I told her. She looked toward me.

"I am still angry."

"I know."

"I may remain angry tomorrow."

"I expect you will."

"And next week."

"That would be remarkably consistent of you." Her mouth twitched despite herself.

"There. You did it again."

"Did what?"

"You answered like the girl I remember while I am trying to remain furious with the woman I don't." That left me without an easy response. So I gave her the simplest one.

"I am both." Seris looked at me for several seconds. Then she nodded faintly.

"I suppose that is the problem." Perhaps. Or perhaps eventually it would become the solution. The silence that followed contained pain, but no longer demanded that either of us fill it immediately. Several minutes passed before Seris glanced toward my phone once more.

"What are they like?" she asked. I blinked.

"Who?"

"Your daughters." Seris gave me an impatient look.

"The three children you apparently planned to hide from me until I found photographic evidence." Ren answered immediately from the driver's seat.

"Terrible." I struck his shoulder. He flinched.

"Again?" Seris stared at him. Ren rubbed the spot with exaggerated suffering.

"Wonderful children. Deeply loved. Occasionally catastrophic."

"That," I admitted, "is considerably more accurate." Seris smiled faintly.

"Which one named Fluffy?"

"Hikari."

"The mysterious one."

"The youngest."

"What is she like?" I considered the question longer than necessary. Explaining Hikari accurately without making her sound fictional was surprisingly difficult.

"She speaks in third person," I began.

"She believes tiny spoon possesses legitimate medical authority, inspects unfamiliar visitors, and once rode a wild boar inside a dungeon." Seris stared at me. Ren added helpfully, "The boar was Bobo."

"His name is Bobo," I corrected automatically. Silence followed. Ren's eyes slowly moved toward me in the mirror. I realized what I had done. Seris noticed too. Her smile widened.

"You corrected him."

"It matters to Hikari."

"Astrea."

"What?"

"You corrected your husband on the proper name of a wild boar because it matters to your daughter."

"Yes." Seris looked delighted. I narrowed my eyes.

"Do not make that face."

"What face?"

"The same one you spent half the drive accusing me of making."

"I have no idea what you mean."

"You are enjoying this."

"A little." Ren nodded approvingly.

"She'll fit in." Seris immediately pointed toward him.

"Do not become comfortable. I still dislike you." Ren remained completely unbothered.

"You have mentioned that."

"Repeatedly."

"I remember."

"And your vehicle is still named terribly." His mouth curved.

"I'll tell Hikari." Seris hesitated. Only for a fraction of a second. But I saw it.

"You would not."

"Definitely."

"She has never met me."

"She takes criticism of Fluffy seriously." Vael nodded beside her with absurd solemnity.

"The Princess possesses very strong opinions on the matter." Seris looked from Ren to Vael, then finally toward me.

"Why do both of them sound completely serious?"

"Because they are." She sank farther into the seat.

"Agreeing to spend one night with you may have been a tactical error."

"Probably," Ren said. Seris glared toward the front.

"You are doing very little to improve my opinion of you."

"Wasn't trying." For the next stretch of road, something almost normal settled inside Fluffy. Not the normal Seris and I had known before the rift. Something new. She sat beside Vael inside a vehicle named by a child she had never met, arguing with the Archmage she had probably imagined killing more than once while I defended the dignity of a boar named Bobo because Hikari would absolutely object if I failed to do so. Three years ago, none of us could have imagined it.

Three hours ago, Seris probably would have hated the idea. Now she was smiling. Barely. But she was. I glanced toward her. Naturally, she caught me.

"Astrea," Seris said, narrowing her eyes again.

"You are doing the face."

"I am not."

"You were looking at me."

"I deeply regret that your observational skills survived." Seris lifted her chin.

"You did not teach me observation. I was always better at it."

"You cheated during every intelligence assessment we took as children."

"That was intelligence gathering."

"You stole the answer sheets."

"Preemptive intelligence gathering." Vael sighed beside her, though the corner of his mouth had begun to rise.

"Some things truly do survive dimensional catastrophe." Seris turned toward him.

"Was that criticism, Commander?"

"An observation, Lady Seris."

"Careful." Vael inclined his head.

"Of course." Ren laughed quietly from the front. This time, Seris joined him. She did not immediately stop herself. The sound was softer than I remembered, slightly rusty from disuse, but familiar enough that something inside me tightened and loosened at once. I remembered hearing that same laugh beneath the western cedar tree. In palace corridors. During lessons we were absolutely supposed to be taking seriously. The anger between us remained. So did the grief.

Tomorrow, Seris might wake inside my home and resent every ordinary thing she found there. She might ask where I had been again, and I would answer again. She might decide one night was enough and leave before breakfast. I would let her. If she remained angry, she could remain angry. If she left, at least this time I would know she was alive. This time I would know where to begin looking. Ahead, the lights of Chiba grew brighter, apartment towers appearing beyond the highway as the city gathered around us again.

Somewhere beneath the region, Draeven's Sovereign Vessel continued enduring its forty-one-second circulation. Somewhere within his territory, Morcant remained beside Velmorans who still depended upon him. Several kilometers ahead waited the apartment I had once considered merely Ren's home. Ruruka was there with our daughters. Vael's belongings had already begun appearing beside the couch after barely a day.

My clothes occupied enough of Ren's room that continuing to call half of it his was becoming increasingly dishonest. And tomorrow, Seris would meet the girls. I already suspected I would regret allowing anyone who remembered my childhood within conversational range of Hikari and Karin. The thought should have troubled me more than it did. Instead, when Fluffy turned toward home and Seris made no request for Ren to stop the vehicle, something inside me finally eased.

For three years, Seris had waited for someone who never returned. I could not give those years back to her. I could not restore those she buried or erase every road she followed because someone claimed to have seen me. But I could open the door when we arrived. I could let her see what had survived. And perhaps, eventually, she would let me see what had survived in her too. One of the people I had believed lost was coming home with me.
