Ren's POV I knew something was wrong the moment I woke up to the smell of properly cooked breakfast. That conclusion might have sounded unfair considering four other people lived in the apartment with me, but experience had established reliable patterns. If Ruri cooked, she usually asked for help reaching something first. If Ria cooked, cupboard doors opened with enough authority to sound personally offended. If Karin attempted breakfast, the smoke detector eventually became involved.

Hikari did not cook because, according to Hikari, she was "too cute for stoves," which was not a recognized safety regulation but had somehow become household law anyway. This morning, however, the apartment was suspiciously quiet. There were no small feet racing through the hallway, no argument about stolen food before breakfast reached the table, and no irritated Demon Queen informing someone that six-thirty in the morning was too early for combat practice.

Instead, the aroma of grilled fish, rice, soup, and coffee drifted upstairs with the deeply unsettling competence of an organized household. I opened one eye and found the other half of the bed already empty. Ria had folded her side of the blanket neatly instead of leaving it wrapped around my legs like evidence from a nocturnal wrestling match, while sunlight filtered through the curtains and illuminated the book she had apparently fallen asleep reading the previous night.

One of Hikari's hair clips lay beside the pillow, probably smuggled into the room during another unauthorized bedtime visit. For several seconds, I considered going back to sleep. Then I remembered we had acquired a demon commander yesterday. That got me moving. By the time I reached the dining room, freshly changed and mostly conscious, the source of the suspicious order had revealed itself.

Vael stood beside the table arranging breakfast with the same concentration I had seen him use while explaining military formations. Bowls sat at equal distances from the edge. Chopsticks were aligned. Cups formed a nearly perfect line. Even the sliced fruit in the center had been arranged symmetrically enough that I suspected he had measured it. The man himself looked considerably different from the exhausted survivor we had brought down from the mountains.

His long black hair had been washed and tied neatly behind his shoulders, and the patched military coat was gone, replaced by one of my black shirts and a pair of spare trousers. The shirt was tight across his shoulders because my wardrobe had not been designed for former intelligence commanders built like siege equipment, but somehow he still managed to look more formal than I did in clothes that actually belonged to me. Ria sat at the table with tea between both hands, watching him with narrowed eyes.

That alone told me Vael had been doing this for long enough to concern her. Ruri had her notebook open beside breakfast but was paying more attention to him than her writing, while Karin wore the delighted expression of a child who had discovered a new source of household chaos. Hikari sat beside Ria with tiny spoon resting beside her bowl like an official ceremonial instrument. Vael noticed me almost immediately.

His posture straightened, one hand moved behind his back, and he inclined his head with perfect seriousness.

"Good morning, Sire. Your coffee is ready." I stopped at the bottom of the stairs and stared at him for several seconds before glancing over my shoulder, just to confirm nobody else had materialized behind me during the night. The stairs were empty. When I looked back, Vael was still waiting with complete composure.

"Who exactly are you talking to?" I asked. A faint crease appeared between his brows.

"You, Sire." I closed my eyes and released a sigh that felt older than I was. Karin immediately leaned across the table demanding to know why Vael had called Papa that, while Ria suddenly found the surface of her tea extremely interesting.

"Because Vael made a mistake," I told Karin as I continued toward the kitchen.

"I did not," Vael replied. His tone carried the calm confidence of a man defending military law rather than destroying my morning.

"Her Majesty is Queen Astrea. You are Her Majesty's lawful husband. In the absence of a formal title established for the Queen's consort in this country, 'Sire' is an appropriate form of address." I looked toward Ria for assistance. She took a slow sip of tea and refused to meet my eyes. Traitor.

"You don't even like me," I reminded Vael.

"That is irrelevant to protocol."

"I liked you better when the hatred was uncomplicated." His expression did not change.

"The hatred remains uncomplicated, Sire." Karin folded forward over the table laughing, Ruri pressed her lips together with visible effort, and Hikari made absolutely no attempt at restraint. Our youngest hugged tiny spoon against her chest while giggling at the discovery that Papa could apparently be defeated without combat. I rubbed the bridge of my nose.

"Long morning." Before I could reach the coffee, Ruri looked toward one of the upper cabinets and politely asked Vael if he could retrieve the blue cups because she could not reach them. Vael moved before I did, opened the cabinet, and answered with exactly the same formality he had used toward me.

"Of course, Princess Ruri." Ruri froze with both hands around her pencil. Color rose from her neck to the tips of her ears. Karin stopped laughing. Hikari gasped. Even Ria's teacup paused halfway to her mouth. I pointed toward Vael.

"See? He's spreading." Vael placed the cups on the counter and looked genuinely confused by everyone's reaction.

"Princess Ruri is the acknowledged daughter of Her Majesty. The title is technically correct." Ria finally set down her tea.

"Vael, I strongly recommend that you stop applying royal protocol to my daughters before Karin decides she possesses executive authority." Too late. Karin had already straightened in her chair.

"Wait. If Mama was actually a queen, then we really are princesses?" Ruri immediately buried her face in both hands, while Hikari lifted tiny spoon with delighted solemnity and declared herself "Spoon Princess." Ria's expression tightened with the unmistakable realization that she had lost control of the conversation before breakfast had properly begun. "He makes good coffee."

She held out one hand, and after reading the message her amusement disappeared almost instantly. Her eyes moved toward Vael before returning to me.

"He knows," she said.

"Probably figured it out yesterday." Vael frowned from beside the table until realization passed across his face. Yesterday he had spent nearly two hours sitting in our dining room addressing Ria as Your Majesty while discussing generals who once served beneath her. For an intelligence commander, he looked remarkably innocent about the consequences. Karin immediately wanted to know what Guild Master Uncle knew.

Ria informed her that it was an adult matter, while Hikari tilted her head and helpfully asked whether Uncle had discovered Mama was Queen. Nobody answered. Hikari smiled and resumed breakfast. Vael offered to accompany me, but I rejected that idea before he finished.

"You're most of the evidence."

"I merely addressed Her Majesty correctly."

"Aaron likely suspected the truth before he left yesterday. He was too professional to confront us while the children were present and we were discussing Draeven." That sounded right. Aaron was loud when he wanted to be, irritating whenever paperwork was involved, and occasionally enjoyed intimidating inexperienced hunters, but he was not careless. If anything, yesterday's strange silences made considerably more sense now. I finished the coffee and stood.

"Guess I'm being interrogated." Ria lifted her cup again.

"Try not to ruin the lies we already told him." That made me pause. She was right. Aaron learning who Ria really was did not mean he could learn everything else. As far as Aaron knew, Ria and I had been married for years. She had spent long periods overseas. Ruri, Karin, and Hikari were our biological daughters, and their sudden appearance in my life had merely been the consequence of me being exceptionally private and apparently terrible at telling people I had a family.

The truth contained dragon eggs, rapidly growing children, concealment magic, emergency legal paperwork, and a marriage that had begun as a practical arrangement. None of that was entering Aaron's office.

"I know," I said. Ria narrowed her eyes.

"That answer does not reassure me."

"It wasn't supposed to." Her glare followed me all the way to the door. The Hunter's Guild was unusually busy by the time I arrived. Several new dungeon notices had appeared on the main display since yesterday, and groups of hunters moved through the lobby carrying equipment cases while receptionists answered calls almost continuously.

She recognizes military ritual modifications that even Association specialists cannot identify, knows the structure of demonic command formations, and reacts to the possibility of surviving invasion forces as though the subject is personal." I rested one elbow against the chair. Aaron stood and began pacing slowly beside his desk.

"Then yesterday, a high-ranking demon officer entered your home, addressed Mrs. Arclight as 'Your Majesty,' spoke of General Draeven as a former commander beneath the same sovereign, and deferred to her whenever the old army was discussed. At that point, continuing to pretend I had not noticed would have required brain damage."

"Good to know you're healthy." Aaron stopped walking. I stopped helping. He studied me for several seconds before his voice lowered.

"Who is Ria Arclight?" There was no value in pretending anymore.

"Her original name is Astrea." The room seemed to become quieter. Aaron did not react immediately. Then I watched recognition travel across his face, not because of the name alone, but because it opened a door three years old. His eyes lost focus for a moment. "Yeah." His jaw tightened.

"And now she is your wife."

"Technically she was already my wife." Aaron stared at me. I realized immediately that I had somehow found the worst possible way to phrase that. His hands settled against the edge of the desk.

"Master."

"Yeah?"

"Your wife is the Demon King."

"Queen." Aaron slammed both palms against the desk hard enough to rattle a pen holder.

"THAT IS NOT THE IMPORTANT PART!" Someone outside the office went silent. I waited. Aaron stared at me with the expression of a man who had discovered the answer to one mystery only to uncover six more underneath it.

"You are telling me that the woman I personally watched you seal during the invasion was already your wife?" I leaned back slightly. This was the dangerous part. Not Astrea. The family cover. One careless sentence and everything we had built around the girls would collapse.

"We'd already been married for a long time," I said, keeping my tone as ordinary as possible.

"Things between us were... complicated." Aaron looked as if the word had personally offended him.

"Complicated."

"We were separated for a while."

"She became the ruler of an invading demon army."

"That contributed." Aaron walked away from the desk and pressed both hands against his hips.

"You consider that a contributing factor?"

"Major factor." His face twitched. I let him process it. Aaron knew I had kept almost my entire private life hidden before the girls started appearing at the Guild. He already believed I had somehow managed to conceal a wife and children from everyone around me. "Ruri, Karin, and Hikari are Astrea's daughters?"

"And yours."

"Last I checked." He dragged one hand slowly down his face.

"You had three daughters with the Demon Queen before the invasion."

"Queen."

"Master."

"Sorry." His eyes narrowed as he tried to rebuild my supposed family history from the pieces I had given him over the past months. I could almost see every earlier conversation returning: his disbelief when he learned I was married, the explanation that their mother spent time overseas, the girls' normal appraisal results, Ria eventually appearing as my wife. "So when you told me their mother had been overseas..."

"Technically true." His eyes sharpened. I shrugged.

"Very overseas." He looked toward the ceiling. For several seconds, I genuinely thought he might pray. Instead, he muttered something about needing stronger coffee before facing me again. When he returned to the desk, the humor had mostly left his expression.

"How much of the seal remains?" Better question.

"Most of it. She can currently access around fifteen percent of what she had before." Aaron became still. Unlike someone hearing that number without context, he did not need an explanation of what one hundred percent meant. He had seen it. The memory passed through his face again: the oppressive black mana, shattered terrain, Ruruka barely standing, my own body pushed far beyond what it could safely handle while the seal took shape. The number did not make him question my strength. It explained Ria's.

"That is why she feels wrong," he said quietly. I raised an eyebrow. Aaron continued, more to himself than me.

"Strong enough that every instinct tells me she is dangerous, but nowhere near the pressure I remember from that battlefield. I thought she was suppressing herself."

"She is. Just not voluntarily." His eyes moved back toward me.

"You are maintaining the restrictions."

"Most of them."

"Of course you are." There was no surprise in the words. Only exhaustion. Aaron had stopped trying to understand my life several revelations ago. His attention sharpened again.

"How long has she been active in Japan?" I gave him enough truth to answer without touching the things that mattered: she had been back for some time, the seal limited her, I had kept track of her, and circumstances changed gradually. "Does Draeven know Astrea survived?"

"Vael doesn't think so."

"Can the other survivors sense her?"

Most importantly, when Vael revealed that some survivors hated humanity and blamed her for abandoning them, she had not responded by declaring those demons automatically justified.

"She wants to find them before Draeven turns desperation into something worse," I finished.

"That doesn't mean she'll choose humanity over them." Aaron's gaze sharpened. I already knew what he was going to ask.

"She won't choose them over humanity either," I added. That stopped him. I remembered Ria standing on the balcony the previous night, looking across Chiba while admitting that her people had suffered during the years she spent believing them dead.

"She told me she won't abandon one home just to prove she still loves the other." Aaron remained silent for a while. Then he stood and reached for his coat.

"I want to hear that from her." I sighed. Aaron gave me a flat look.

"You have concealed the identity of the Demon Queen, your supposed years-long marriage to said Demon Queen, and the fact that the children I have met repeatedly are apparently princesses. I am being extremely calm."

"They're going to hate that last part."

"I do not care."

"You will when Karin hears you." Aaron paused. Apparently, even he respected certain threats. Vael opened the condominium door when we returned. Aaron stopped before entering. Vael stood there carrying neatly folded towels. They stared at each other. Aaron slowly looked toward me.

"He lives here now."

"Temporary." Vael inclined his head.

"I have been permitted to remain within Her Majesty's household." Aaron's expression suggested he regretted asking. Inside, the apartment looked painfully normal considering the conversation we had just survived. Ruri was doing homework at the low table. Karin sat beside her trying to negotiate access to a better pencil despite having several of her own. Hikari lay on her stomach nearby, drawing a castle where one tower appeared to be shaped like tiny spoon.

Ria emerged from the kitchen carrying tea and stopped when she saw Aaron beside me. Her eyes moved between us.

"You told him."

"He figured it out."

"That is more believable." Aaron entered fully, removed his shoes, and stood near the dining table. Yesterday he had looked at Ria and seen an unusually knowledgeable hunter who happened to be my wife. Now the same face carried an entirely different history. He had never seen Astrea clearly beneath the armor and distorted voice three years ago. But he had felt her. That was enough.

"Astrea," he said. The name changed the room. Vael straightened near the wall. Ruri's pencil slowed. Karin looked up immediately, while Hikari rolled onto one side and watched with open curiosity. Ria placed the tea tray on the table before sitting opposite Aaron.

"You wanted answers."

"I do." What followed was not another interrogation so much as two people measuring where the other stood. When he asked about the surviving demons, she did not claim automatic authority over them merely because she had once been their Queen.

"I intend to find them," she said, fingers resting lightly around her cup.

"Those who want peace deserve the opportunity to have it. Those who have committed crimes will still answer for those crimes. Those who continue attacking civilians will be stopped, regardless of whether they once served beneath me." Aaron studied her closely.

"And Draeven?" Something colder entered her expression.

"Draeven was once one of my commanders. That does not grant him permission to turn my people's suffering into justification for another war. If he continues, I will stop him myself." Vael lowered his gaze slightly. Pride flickered across his face. Aaron noticed. He leaned back.

"Why should I trust you?" Ria did not answer immediately. Her attention drifted toward the living room. Ruri had returned to her homework but was very obviously listening. Karin was making no attempt to pretend otherwise. Hikari had resumed drawing, though her eyes periodically lifted toward the adults. When Ria finally spoke, her voice was quieter.

"Because my life is no longer divided cleanly between demons and humans. The people Draeven endangered include humans I know. The survivors he manipulates include people who once depended upon me. My daughters live here. My husband lives here. My sister-in-law nearly died because of one of his experiments." Her fingers tightened slightly around the teacup.

"If you require me to choose which half deserves to survive, then you misunderstand what I intend to do." Aaron's eyes moved toward me.

"That is essentially what he said." Ria looked over. I shrugged. Her expression softened for barely a second. Aaron noticed that too. He eventually exhaled and rested both forearms against the table.

"Officially, I should report you immediately. An original invasion commander—especially its sovereign—remaining unregistered inside Japan is not something I am authorized to ignore." Vael's posture tightened. Ria remained calm. Aaron raised one hand.

"I said should. I am not doing it yet." That surprised me enough for him to notice.

"Do not look pleased, Master. This is not approval." His attention returned to Ria.

"If the Association learns Astrea is alive before we understand the anchors, we could trigger national mobilization, political interference, panic among hunters, and retaliation against every surviving demon we have not yet identified. Draeven would also learn immediately that the Queen he believes gone has returned." Ria gave a small nod.

"Then secrecy serves both sides."

"For now." Aaron's expression hardened.

"If I believe you have become a threat to civilians, I report everything." Ria did not take offense. Instead, she inclined her head.

"As you should." The simplicity of the response changed something in Aaron's face. Not trust. Not forgiveness for a war three years past. But perhaps recognition that the woman across from him understood the condition and accepted it. The atmosphere finally began to loosen. Naturally, that was when Ruri destroyed it. She looked toward Vael and politely asked whether he could retrieve her blue folder from the upper shelf because Karin had apparently moved it while searching for crayons.

Karin immediately denied the accusation, but the fact that she refused eye contact made the defense unconvincing. Vael crossed the room without hesitation.

"At once, Princess Ruri." Aaron stopped moving. His head turned toward Ruri. Then toward Vael.

"Princess?" I covered my eyes with one hand. Karin immediately abandoned the pencil dispute and hurried over.

"Mama is Queen, so Vael says we're technically princesses." Ruri's face became bright red.

"Please don't explain it like that." Hikari arrived next, tiny spoon raised proudly above her head.

"Hikari is Spoon Princess." Aaron stared at all three of them. Then his eyes shifted toward Ria. Then toward me. I already knew.

"So if Astrea is Queen," he said slowly, "and those three are her daughters..."

"No." Aaron's mouth twitched. I pointed at him.

"Don't."

"What does that make you?" Vael returned with Ruri's folder and supplied the answer with complete composure.

"Sire." Silence settled around the dining room. Aaron looked at Vael. Then at me. After an entire day of absorbing hidden marriages, demonic royalty, sealed sovereigns, and the realization that three girls he thought were ordinary children were apparently daughters of the Demon Queen, his self-control finally failed. He laughed. Not politely. Actually laughed. I stared at him with complete betrayal while Ria tried unsuccessfully to hide the twitch at the corner of her mouth.

"I preferred the interrogation," I muttered. That only made Aaron laugh harder. Vael handed Ruri her folder with another small bow.

"I withheld this yesterday," Vael explained, "because I had not decided whether your Guild could be trusted with information capable of exposing surviving demon cells. After today, that concern has lessened." Aaron accepted the criticism without reacting.

"What does it say?" Ria leaned closer. Her eyes moved across the script once, then again more slowly. The warmth disappeared from her face."'Sovereign Vessel stabilization.'" The words settled heavily in the room. Vael nodded.

"I copied this from one of Draeven's internal reports shortly before I defected. At the time, I believed stabilization referred to a stage he had not yet reached." He unfolded another sheet containing seven locations and several handwritten measurements. Six displayed values within a similar range. One had been circled repeatedly. Aaron leaned forward.

"The oldest anchor?"

"Yes." Ria's eyes narrowed.

"Yesterday it was drawing twelve percent above the others." Vael looked toward her.

"According to the Guild data Aaron brought yesterday." Aaron's expression tightened.

"And now?" Vael reached for the tablet on the table, where the latest readings Aaron had brought were still open.

"Nearly twenty percent." The apartment became quiet. Not because anyone demanded it. The change in our faces was enough. Karin stopped whispering to Hikari. Ruri lowered her pencil. Even Hikari seemed to sense that tiny spoon had temporarily lost jurisdiction over the problem. Aaron looked toward Ria.

"Can that increase happen naturally?"

"No." Her answer came immediately, though she remained focused on the map.

"Not at that rate. Someone is actively feeding the convergence." Vael nodded once. The confidence he had carried all morning was gone, replaced by something far older and less comfortable.

"When I left Draeven, I believed he was still attempting to create a stable vessel capable of receiving sovereign-level power. If these readings correspond to the report, then stabilization has already begun." I looked at the circled anchor. Yesterday, Draeven had been building something. Today, that something was feeding. Aaron rested both hands against the table.

"How long?" Vael's jaw tightened.

"I cannot say. The project changed after I defected, and I do not know how much progress he made without me." Ria looked toward him. There was fear in his eyes now. Not panic. The kind of fear only someone who understood the project could possess.

"He may already have one." Outside the windows, Chiba continued beneath an ordinary afternoon sky. Cars moved through intersections, pedestrians crossed beneath traffic lights, and distant buildings reflected warm sunlight as though nothing beneath the city had changed. Inside our dining room, the seven-anchor map lay between a retired Archmage, a Demon Queen, a Guild Master, and one of her last surviving commanders. I looked toward Ria. Her expression had gone cold. Not frightened. Focused.

The same woman who had spent breakfast trying to prevent Karin from declaring herself a princess was gone for the moment. In her place sat the sovereign Aaron had watched me seal three years ago, staring down at a battlefield beginning to take shape beneath our feet.
