Ren's pov I woke up expecting the end of the world. That probably said something unfortunate about how the last several weeks had gone. My phone was still on the bedside table where I had left it sometime after two in the morning.

The screen showed nine unread Guild notifications, three messages from Aaron, one from Ruruka despite the fact that she had slept approximately twelve meters away, and an automated weather advisory that had somehow survived being buried beneath reports concerning seven synchronized dimensional anchors. I stared at the ceiling for several seconds before reaching for the phone.

There were no emergency sirens outside, no missed calls stacked across the screen, and—perhaps most encouragingly—no messages containing the words catastrophic, breach, or Master, please answer your phone before Japan becomes geographically inconvenient. That was promising. Probably. I opened Aaron's latest report. 02: 44 — All seven anchors remain synchronized. Forty-one-second interval unchanged. The next update had come less than two hours later. 04: 13 — No measurable dimensional expansion.

No monster displacement observed. And finally: 05: 57 — Still stable. I dislike this. That made two of us. The mattress shifted beside me as I lowered the phone. Ria remained asleep. Considering she had returned from the survivor facility sometime well past midnight, I was mildly surprised she had made it all the way into bed before losing consciousness.

Her silver hair had spread across the pillow in complete disregard for the dignified image she normally tried to maintain, and one pale hand rested close to the place where my arm had been before I moved. At some point during the night, she had probably attached herself to me again. I had no evidence. Except experience. I put the phone down and sat up carefully. Ria did not so much as stir, which was unusual enough that I glanced over my shoulder twice before standing.

The woman who had once commanded armies could apparently sleep through the possible activation of a dimensional war machine provided she had spent the previous day receiving refugees from a kingdom everyone thought was dead. Fair. I pulled on a shirt and left the bedroom as quietly as possible. The living room was dim, the city beyond the windows still washed in the soft gray light that came just before sunrise.

Vael was already awake, because apparently former intelligence commanders did not believe in reasonable sleeping schedules. He sat at the dining table with a stack of printed shelter reports beside one elbow and the old field receiver positioned within easy reach. Seris sat opposite him with a mug cupped between both hands. She looked considerably less enthusiastic about being conscious.

"You people rise offensively early," Seris muttered when I entered the kitchen. Her silver-gray eyes followed me with the unfocused irritation of someone who had not yet decided whether the morning deserved forgiveness. Vael glanced toward her without lifting his eyes completely from the report.

"You were awake before I was."

"That is irrelevant."

"It is directly relevant." Seris narrowed her eyes at him over the rim of her mug.

"Your personality has become worse since discovering domestic employment."

"I am not domestically employed," Vael replied, dignity entering his posture as though she had accused him of treason. I opened the refrigerator and examined its contents.

"He isn't employed at all." Vael slowly raised his head. I closed the refrigerator before his stare developed legal consequences.

"Good morning." His gaze followed me toward the stove. I found eggs, rice, and enough vegetables to construct something that would qualify as breakfast provided nobody became overly ambitious. The apartment remained relatively peaceful while I started preparing food, apart from the occasional rustle of paper behind me and Seris demanding to know why human bureaucracy required three separate forms to record the same injured person. Apparently paperwork had survived the Great Emergence. A tragedy.

Ruruka emerged several minutes later wearing a loose shirt and sleep pants, her ponytail still undone. She stopped near the dining table when she noticed Vael working through another page.

"You slept, right?" she asked, suspicion already creeping into her expression. Vael looked genuinely confused by the question.

"Yes." Ruruka planted one hand against the back of a chair.

"For how long?"

"That is not operationally relevant." She stared at him. Seris took another sip and murmured, "Approximately three hours." Vael's head turned sharply toward her. Seris looked delighted with herself. Ruruka sighed and continued toward the kettle.

"You and Nii-sama are going to become friends for all the wrong reasons."

"I heard that," I said from the stove. Ruruka glanced over her shoulder.

"You were supposed to." The bedroom door opened behind us. Nobody reacted immediately. Then Seris stopped drinking. Vael's hand froze over the report. Ruruka, halfway through reaching for a cup, looked toward the hallway. I turned. Ria had appeared. She looked terrible. Not sick. Not injured. Just catastrophically tired. Her silver hair was slightly disordered, several strands falling loosely across one side of her face, and her crimson eyes were only half open.

The regal posture she wore as naturally as clothing had apparently not finished loading yet. She remained in the hallway for several seconds with the distant expression of someone remembering which world she currently occupied. Then she started walking. Seris watched her pass. Vael watched her pass. Ruruka watched her pass. Ria ignored all three. She entered the kitchen, walked directly toward me, and wrapped both arms around my waist from behind. I stopped moving.

The spatula remained suspended above the pan while her forehead settled against the middle of my back. Her embrace was neither tentative nor particularly light. She simply attached herself to me with the quiet certainty of someone whose body had made a decision several minutes before the rest of her mind arrived. I glanced down at the two pale arms locked around my waist.

"Morning," I said. Ria made a small sound against my shirt.

"Mm." That was it. No complaint. No insult. No declaration that physical proximity was necessary to maintain household efficiency. She simply stayed there. I looked over my shoulder. Her eyes had already closed again. Then I looked toward the dining table. Vael was frozen. Completely.

His expression had achieved the particular emptiness of a man whose years of battlefield training, intelligence work, and service under the Demon Queen had somehow failed to provide instructions for what to do when said Demon Queen sleepily hugged her husband from behind while breakfast cooked. Seris, on the other hand, looked as though someone had personally delivered the greatest morning of her adult life. She slowly lowered her mug.

"Astrea." Ria did not move.

"What." Her answer came muffled against my back. Seris's mouth curved.

"Nothing." Ria's eyes opened. Slowly. Suspicion apparently functioned before consciousness. I felt her head lift from my back. Her gaze moved past my shoulder, landing first on Vael, then Seris, and finally Ruruka, who had already covered her mouth with one hand. Ria looked down. At her arms. Around me. Her entire body went still. Then she released me so quickly that I nearly shifted forward into the stove.

"This is not what it appears to be," Ria said, straightening with whatever fragments of sovereign dignity she could recover on short notice. I turned toward her.

"You were hugging me." Ria's crimson eyes sharpened.

"I am aware of the physical configuration, Ren." A strangled noise came from the dining table. Seris had attempted not to laugh. She failed badly. Ria's attention snapped toward her.

"Seris."

"I said nothing," Seris replied, although the grin spreading across her face undermined the defense immediately.

"You are making a face."

"I have a face."

"That particular face is offensive." Ruruka finally surrendered and laughed openly. Ria turned toward her. That was a mistake. My sister had always been at her weakest when survival depended on self-restraint.

"She does that in bed too," Ruruka announced. The kitchen died. Seris's eyes widened. Vael quietly closed his. Ria stared at Ruruka with the remarkably calm expression of someone calculating the minimum amount of force required to remove a sibling from reality without damaging the apartment. Seris leaned forward over the table.

"She does?" Ruruka nodded before wisdom could intervene.

"Like a koala."

"Ruruka," Ria said. My sister noticed the faint dark flicker gathering at the edge of Ria's mana and immediately became more cautious. Not cautious enough.

"She wraps around Nii-sama when she's asleep," Ruruka continued, unable to resist.

"I have photographic evidence." Seris placed her mug down with almost religious reverence.

"Show me."

"No," Ria replied immediately. Ruruka's hand moved toward her phone.

"Absolutely not," Ria repeated, this time with enough weight in her voice to make the air around her feel marginally colder. Ruruka pulled the device halfway from her pocket anyway. Vael reached across the table and calmly placed one hand over it. Ruruka looked at him. Vael's expression had regained the solemn gravity of a commander assessing battlefield casualties.

"Lady Ruruka," he said quietly, "for the preservation of household stability, I strongly recommend against continuing." Ruruka blinked at him. Seris looked personally betrayed.

"You used to lead intelligence operations." Vael kept his hand firmly over the phone.

"Which is why I recognize preventable casualties." I turned back toward the stove before the eggs burned. Behind me, Ria inhaled slowly through her nose. The apartment remained quiet for approximately seven seconds before small footsteps approached from the hallway. Hikari appeared first, carrying the tiny spoon in one hand and dragging a blanket behind her with the other.

Her golden hair stuck out unevenly from sleep, and she stopped at the entrance to the kitchen when she noticed every adult looking unusually alert for this hour. Hikari blinked. She looked at Ria. Then at me.

"Mama hugged Papa again?" Seris turned so quickly that her chair creaked.

"Again?" she repeated, delight returning instantly. Ria closed her eyes. Karin appeared around the corner next, rubbing one eye with the back of her hand.

"Mama hugs Papa all the time when sleeping." Ria opened her eyes again.

"Karin." Karin lowered her hand and looked at her mother with complete innocence.

"What?" Ruri arrived behind both of them already far more awake than either sister. Her calm gaze took in Seris's expression, Ruruka's half-drawn phone, Vael's hand protecting it, and Ria's increasingly obvious desire to abandon civilization altogether. Ruri sighed softly.

"Mama is probably just tired." Ria looked toward her eldest daughter. For one beautiful second, relief appeared across her face. Then Ruri continued in the same gentle, helpful tone.

"Mama usually holds Papa tighter when she is very tired." The relief died. Seris lowered her forehead toward the table, shoulders trembling helplessly. Ruruka had to brace one hand against the counter to keep herself upright, while Vael stared toward the ceiling with the disciplined determination of a soldier refusing to bear witness to the destruction of his sovereign's dignity. Ria looked at all three girls before slowly turning toward me. I raised both hands.

"I didn't say anything."

"You exist too loudly," she replied.

"That seems difficult to fix." Hikari wandered toward Ria and lifted the tiny spoon with both solemnity and purpose.

"Mama needs spoon." Ria looked down at her. Hikari's expression was completely serious. After a long moment, Ria bent slightly at the waist. Hikari gently tapped the spoon against her forehead.

"Better." Ria remained there for half a second, staring at the tiny utensil as though wondering how her life had reached this point. Then she straightened and managed a small, genuine softness in her voice.

"Thank you, Hikari." Hikari smiled proudly. Seris had stopped laughing by then. Mostly. Her gaze moved from Hikari to Ria, lingered there, and then shifted toward me. Something in her expression changed. The humor remained, but underneath it appeared something more thoughtful. She had known Astrea before crowns, before armies, before war. She had probably seen more versions of Ria than anyone still alive. Apparently she had never seen this one. I caught Seris looking at me.

"What?" Seris studied me for another moment before lifting her mug again.

"Nothing." This time she meant something different by it. Breakfast eventually happened despite the household's repeated attempts to turn it into a diplomatic incident. Vael helped set the table without being asked. Ruri carried plates from the kitchen. Karin stole one piece of egg while believing nobody was looking and was caught immediately. Hikari positioned the tiny spoon beside her bowl as though it belonged naturally among normal cutlery.

Ria disappeared into the bedroom long enough to restore sufficient dignity for public function. When she returned, her silver hair was neat, her posture straight, and her expression once again belonged to a former sovereign who had absolutely never hugged anyone in her life. Seris watched her sit down.

"Sleep well?" she asked sweetly. Ria settled into her chair without looking at her.

"I will kill you." Seris lifted her tea.

"There she is." My phone rang before the assassination could continue. Aaron. Of course. I answered and put the call on speaker.

"Morning." Aaron sounded like he had personally fought the night and lost.

"Master."

"That isn't a morning."

"It stopped being morning for me around four." Ruruka winced sympathetically while reaching for her drink. Aaron continued, his tone flattening into professional exhaustion.

"All seven anchors remain synchronized at forty-one-second intervals. No measurable dimensional expansion, no changes in dungeon boundaries, no abnormal monster migration, and no new signal from the central structure." Across the table, Vael lowered his chopsticks. Seris's attention sharpened immediately, while the last traces of embarrassment disappeared from Ria's expression beneath the colder focus of command.

"So nothing changed," I said. This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon. Aaron released a tired breath through the speaker.

"Nothing has changed for six hours. I hate it."

"Same."

"Do I need you at headquarters?"

"No." The silence that followed carried Aaron's displeasure clearly enough that I could imagine his expression without seeing it. I continued before he began an argument.

"Sitting in your office doesn't make Warp faster. I'll stay available. If the spatial pressure changes, I'll feel it." Aaron sounded deeply dissatisfied.

"I dislike the sentence 'you'll feel it' being part of our national emergency plan."

"It's worked so far."

"That does not improve it." Ruruka hid a smile behind her cup. Aaron continued with the rest of the report.

"The shelter is stable. All fifty arrivals are accounted for. No violence overnight. Medical personnel say the serious cases are responding to treatment." Ria's shoulders loosened by a fraction. It was barely visible, but I felt the tension leave her beside me. Then Aaron added, "There has been no further contact from Morcant's suspected route." Vael's jaw tightened instantly. Seris glanced toward Ria. Ria remained silent for several seconds, one fingertip resting against the edge of her cup.

"Any sign the reroute mark was discovered?"

"None that we can verify," Aaron answered. Ria nodded once, more to herself than to the phone.

"Then that is enough for now." Aaron seemed to understand what she meant.

"Agreed." The call lasted several more minutes, mostly because Aaron insisted twice that I remain reachable and I reminded him twice that my phone currently worked. When the screen finally went dark, I checked the clock. School. Karin noticed at the same time. Her face immediately became tragic.

"Do we have to go?"

"Yes," I replied. She stared at me as though I had betrayed her personally.

"But there might be a war." Ruri frowned at her sister while gathering the empty dishes.

"That is not a reason to skip class."

"It is a very good reason," Karin argued, sitting straighter as though the logic should have been self-evident. Hikari raised the tiny spoon.

"Hikari can bring spoon to school." Ria looked toward me. The question was already in her eyes. I understood it. She waited until the girls had begun gathering their bags near the hallway before stepping closer and lowering her voice.

"Ren. Should they go?" There was none of the command authority she had used yesterday with survivors or Hunters. This was different. This was Mama. I looked toward the girls. Ruri was checking Hikari's bag to make sure her notebook had actually made it inside. Karin was trying to conceal something suspiciously shaped beneath one of her books. Ruri found the wooden practice knife almost immediately and pulled it out. Karin protested. Normal. Completely normal.

Outside our walls, seven dimensional anchors were pulsing together every forty-one seconds like parts of a single machine. I hated that. But there was no breach. No evacuation order. No confirmed attack. Nothing that justified turning the girls' lives into a bunker before the danger even arrived.

"If something happens," I told Ria quietly, "I'll get to them." She watched my face. She knew what Warp meant in my hands. More importantly, she knew I wasn't saying it because reassurance sounded nice. I would get to them. Ria exhaled slowly, then glanced toward the girls again.

"If we keep them here because something might happen," I added, "then Draeven has already changed their day." Her expression softened. Not much. Enough.

"You are occasionally sensible."

"Rare condition." The corner of her mouth almost moved. Then Karin shouted from the hallway, "Ruri stole my emergency weapon!" Ruri's patient voice followed immediately.

"It is a wooden knife."

"It still counts!" I pushed back my chair.

"School." Karin groaned like someone had announced an execution. We took the girls together. The morning air outside was cool enough that Hikari insisted on holding my hand with both of hers, the tiny spoon safely tucked into an outer pocket of her bag. Ruri walked beside Ria and explained a classroom assignment involving plants, while Karin continued presenting increasingly elaborate arguments for why a wooden practice knife was objectively responsible emergency equipment during a dimensional crisis.

Nobody agreed with her. At the school gate, Hikari stopped before following her sisters inside and tilted her head back toward me.

"Papa comes fast if Hikari calls?" The question erased whatever humor Karin's argument had left in me. I crouched in front of her.

"Very fast." Hikari studied my face as though determining whether the answer met acceptable contractual standards. Then she reached into her bag, retrieved the tiny spoon, and held it between us.

"Papa promise?" I touched one finger lightly against the spoon.

"Promise." Her smile returned immediately. Ria stood beside me watching the exchange. For just a moment, an emotion crossed her crimson eyes that was difficult to separate into individual pieces. Fear, probably. Hope too. The girls waved before disappearing through the gate. Ria and I remained outside longer than necessary. When the last glimpse of golden hair vanished into the building, Ria released a slow breath.

"I dislike this."

"So do I." She turned toward me, brows drawing together slightly.

"That was not reassurance."

"Wasn't supposed to be." Ria studied me for a moment. Then, surprisingly, she nodded. We stopped at a small café on the way home. It was nothing remarkable: two tables outside, cheap coffee, pastries behind a glass case, and a bored employee who clearly had no idea that one customer had once ruled a demon kingdom while the other had once joined the final stage of an invasion because the demons destroyed the studio producing the anime he was watching. I considered that an ideal level of public awareness.

We chose a table near the window. Ria sat opposite me, both hands resting around a paper cup that had stopped steaming several minutes earlier. People moved beyond the glass in ordinary patterns: office workers hurrying toward stations, a cyclist weaving carefully around pedestrians, an old man walking a dog that seemed significantly less interested in arriving anywhere. For several minutes, Ria said nothing. I let her. Eventually her eyes lowered toward the coffee.

"Fifty," she murmured. I knew what she meant without asking.

"Yeah." Ria's fingers tightened faintly around the cup.

"Fifty people answered."

"And arrived," I reminded her. She remained silent long enough for a car to pass outside before speaking again.

"Do you know what I keep thinking about?"

"Probably." Her eyes lifted toward me. I took another drink despite the coffee having reached the temperature where it was neither warm enough to be pleasant nor cold enough to surrender completely.

"The people who didn't," I said. Ria looked back toward the window.

"There were settlements Vael never found," she said quietly.

"Units that disappeared after the rift. Families who may still be hiding. People who followed Draeven because he was the only person offering them food, shelter, direction, or simply something that resembled tomorrow." She paused, and the next name came softer.

"Morcant." I did not answer immediately. Ria watched the dog outside stop to investigate something near a planter, her expression distant enough that I doubted she actually saw it.

"Fifty is not enough," she said.

"Probably not." Her gaze snapped toward me, perhaps expecting disagreement. I shrugged slightly and placed my cup down.

"Yesterday, those fifty people didn't have somewhere safe to sleep." Ria's expression tightened.

"I know."

"That doesn't make the others disappear."

"No," she agreed, and something tired moved behind her eyes.

"I didn't say it did." She stared at me for several seconds. Then the tension in her shoulders loosened just enough to notice. Not because I had fixed anything. I hadn't. There were problems even magic couldn't turn into something neat by saying the right sentence. Sometimes the best available option was simply admitting that the weight existed and sitting beside someone while they carried it. Ria shifted in her chair until the distance between our hands on the table became smaller. She did not touch me.

Neither did I. The space between us was comfortable enough that it didn't need correcting. We remained there until our coffee went completely cold. When we returned to the condominium, Vael and Seris were still discussing the mark discovered along the extraction route. Ruruka had already left for a short Guild debrief, and several old Velmoran maps now occupied half the dining table. Seris looked up when Ria entered.

"Nothing." Ria removed her coat and hung it near the door.

"No additional signal?" Vael shook his head, his expression more troubled than his carefully controlled voice suggested.

"No second reroute mark. No dead-drop confirmation. No direct channel." Seris leaned one shoulder against the sofa.

"If yesterday's sign was Morcant, then he knew enough to open one road and deliberately stopped there." Ria's hand remained on the back of a chair for a moment. Vael watched her carefully before adding, "If he wanted us to answer, he would have left a channel." Ria looked at him.

"You believe that?"

"I know him," Vael replied, and the certainty in his voice came without hesitation. Seris folded her arms, though a tired smile touched one corner of her mouth.

"Unfortunately, so do I. Morcant has never been particularly subtle when he wants someone to argue with him." Vael gave her a flat look. Seris ignored it. Ria glanced down at the maps before releasing a quiet breath. Everything in her posture suggested that waiting was the last thing she wanted to do.

"We wait," she said anyway. Vael lowered his head.

"Yes." Seris did not make a joke. That alone said enough. By afternoon, the girls were home, and whatever remained of the apartment's solemn atmosphere lasted approximately three minutes. Karin dropped her school bag near the sofa and immediately complained that mathematics had been invented by cruel people. Ruri corrected her twice, first regarding where the bag belonged and then regarding mathematics. Hikari placed the tiny spoon beside her workbook and announced that it would be assisting with arithmetic.

I observed the first few problems. There was no measurable improvement. Vael, meanwhile, had somehow forgotten to eat lunch. Ruri discovered this. That was worse than being caught by me. She appeared beside him carrying a small plate in both hands while Vael examined another shelter report. Her expression remained polite, but something about Ruri's quiet seriousness made resistance surprisingly difficult.

"Uncle Vael," she said. Vael looked up immediately.

"Princess Ruri?"

"You didn't eat." His eyes flicked once toward the plate.

"I was occupied." Ruri placed it carefully in front of him.

"Please eat before it gets cold." Vael stared at the food. Then at Ruri. His shoulders lowered with the resignation of a man who had already lost the engagement.

"Yes, Princess Ruri." Seris, sitting nearby with a book open across one knee, slowly lowered it.

"You commanded the Ninth Intelligence Division," she reminded him. Vael picked up his chopsticks.

"Correct." Seris continued, increasingly offended by the situation.

"You survived a dimensional collapse."

"Yes."

"You spent three years avoiding Hunters, hostile monsters, and Draeven's people."

"Yes." Seris pointed toward Ruri.

"And she tells you to eat once." Vael looked at Ruri. Ruri gave him a small, encouraging smile. Vael returned his attention to the plate.

"Princess Ruri is persuasive." Ruri blinked, clearly confused by the accusation.

"I just said your food was getting cold." I nodded gravely from the other side of the table.

"Terrifying." Ruri looked mildly offended. Karin abandoned her homework long enough to drag her chair closer to Vael.

"Did the Ninth Division use curved swords?" Vael had barely swallowed before answering.

"Some operatives did." Karin's eyes brightened.

"Dual blades?"

"Occasionally."

"Can you teach me?"

"No," I said from across the room. Karin turned toward me with immediate betrayal.

"Papa wasn't part of conversation."

"Papa heard conversation." Vael looked suspiciously relieved. While Karin began arguing that listening without invitation should not grant veto authority, I pulled several emergency bags from the storage closet and placed them near the wall. Hikari noticed immediately. She abandoned mathematics to begin conducting tiny-spoon inspections. Ria, seated near the end of the sofa, watched me open the first bag. Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"You are checking those again."

"Reorganizing."

"You checked them yesterday."

"Things move." Ria looked toward the closed bags.

"Inside sealed compartments?"

"Very advanced phenomenon." Her stare lingered on me for another few seconds before she stood. I continued checking supplies while she approached: medicine, bottled water, flashlights, emergency identification cards, spare clothes for the girls, simple food, and several portable mana batteries. Ria crouched beside the second bag without another comment and added an extra packet of medicine. Neither of us acknowledged what we were doing. Ruri noticed anyway.

She quietly retrieved a notepad, sat nearby, and began writing a checklist in neat handwriting. Karin noticed that too. Five minutes later she returned holding the wooden practice knife from that morning. I looked at it. Then at her.

"No." Karin stopped.

"I didn't ask yet."

"You were going to." Her cheeks puffed.

"But—""No." Karin planted both hands on her hips.

"How many monsters can Karin fight during emergency?"

"Zero." Her expression transformed into genuine horror.

"Zero?"

"Correct."

"That is unreasonable!" Beside me, Ria turned her face away. Her shoulders moved. Karin noticed immediately.

"Mama!" Ria composed herself before turning back.

"Your father is correct." The betrayal on Karin's face deepened.

"Both of you?"

"Unfortunately," I said. Hikari approached Karin's emergency bag and tapped the spoon against it with careful ceremony.

"Bag safe." She moved to Ruri's.

"Ruri bag safe." Then Karin's again.

"Karin bag extra safe." Karin looked down at the newly blessed bag and immediately saw an opportunity.

"Can extra-safe bag have knife?"

"No," I replied. Hikari considered the matter seriously, tiny brows drawing together.

"Hikari says maybe." I looked at her.

"No." She accepted the ruling with surprising dignity and nodded.

"Papa stronger than spoon today." Ria laughed outright this time. Karin looked appalled at the collapse of parental solidarity. Ruruka returned before dinner carrying her sword case and enough fatigue around her eyes to suggest the debrief had involved more administrators than monsters. She barely had time to sit down before Seris made the mistake of mentioning something about Ria's childhood. The girls heard her. That was the end of peace. Hikari immediately abandoned her crayons and leaned closer.

"Was Mama cute?" Seris looked across the room toward Ria. Ria's expression became suspicious before Seris even answered.

"Extremely," Seris said. Karin dragged herself closer as well.

"Did Mama fight people?" Seris blinked.

"As a child?"

"Yes." Seris considered the question with great seriousness.
