"It was the door." The words left my mouth quietly, but the ruined avenue seemed to hold them longer than it should have. Behind us, the Colossus lay half-buried in shattered asphalt, four enormous arms sprawled across the intersection while the last traces of violet energy faded beneath its black crystalline armor.

Dust rolled slowly between overturned cars and broken storefronts, catching the pulse of emergency lights and turning the entire street red, white, and purple beneath a sky that no longer looked like night. Above the avenue, the fracture I had forced into a Spatial Lock remained trapped inside pale Arcane geometry. Thin lines crossed over one another like stitches drawn across a wound, trembling whenever the pressure beyond them pushed against the seal.

If that had been the only problem, I might have considered the evening merely inconvenient. It wasn't. Another violet stain appeared beyond the western skyline. A black line cut through the center of it, widened, then held. Farther north, a second rupture shimmered above the city, distorting the clouds around it until nearby buildings seemed to lean toward something that was not physically there.

Somewhere east, another fracture opened with the same forty-one-second pulse that had begun when all seven anchors synchronized. Aaron's radio erupted almost immediately. Reports from different districts trampled over one another through the speakers—external manifestations in Chiba, another rupture near a Saitama evacuation route, Gunma requesting reinforcement, Tokyo confirming monsters outside registered Gate boundaries.

Aaron closed his eyes for perhaps half a second before opening them again, and the exhaustion beneath his usually composed expression had become impossible to miss.

"Can you close them?" Aaron asked, looking directly at me. I expanded Spatial Awareness across the region. Ordinarily, space behaved itself unless somebody gave it a reason not to. Buildings occupied fixed positions, roads joined predictable coordinates, and a kilometer remained a kilometer unless I decided otherwise. Tonight, the entire region felt like cloth being stretched from several directions at once.

Each fracture occupied a different place, but beneath all of them I could feel the same pressure moving through the seven-anchor network. They were not separate wounds. They were separate openings being forced through reality by one structure.

"Some of them," I said, flexing my right hand while numbness still crawled through two fingers from the previous Spatial Lock.

"The smaller ruptures should be manageable. Bigger ones too, if I stay with them long enough." Aaron's brows drew together.

"You said that like there was a second half."

"There is." I glanced upward when the Arcane lattice trembled again.

"Closing one doesn't remove the pressure. It just forces the network to redistribute it somewhere else. I shut a door here, and the same thing starts looking for another wall." Hasegawa approached from the opposite side of the mobile command vehicle, blood dried along one cheek and dust coating the shoulder of her combat jacket. Despite the damage, the Tokyo Guild Master still carried herself with rigid control.

"Then individual suppression only buys time."

"Exactly." Matsuda folded his arms beside her and studied the spreading violet marks above the skyline.

"How much time?"

"That depends on how intelligently the network is moving the load." I flexed my hand again when sensation briefly vanished from my smallest finger.

"And if I personally wrestle every dimensional rupture in Japan until sunrise, my damaged pathways are eventually going to decide they've had enough of me." Kurose had been listening from several steps away. His gaze dropped toward my hand, then toward the dried blood beneath my nose. Yesterday he probably would have challenged the statement. Tonight, after watching me bend a Colossus attack through space and hold a low S-rank-level breach in place, his expression only tightened. Aaron noticed too.

"Then you are not chasing every rupture."

"That wasn't the plan."

"You have a history of developing bad plans without informing anyone."

"They're efficient."

"You once solved a Guild summons by turning your phone off," Aaron reminded me, irritation briefly overpowering exhaustion.

"It stopped ringing."

"It caused me to drive to your condominium."

"Still solved the summons." Aaron stared at me long enough that I could practically see him measuring whether murder counted as emergency administration. Eventually he turned back toward the tactical display instead.

"You handle catastrophic fractures, structural collapses, and anything our response teams cannot contain. Everyone else handles whatever has already crossed until we understand the network itself."

"That sounds inconvenient." Aaron's eye twitched.

"I said inconvenient," I added.

"I didn't say no." Ria stepped toward the tactical map before Aaron could develop a second crisis. Violet light from the fractured sky caught along the edges of her silver hair, while faint traces of dark mana still evaporated from her fingers after the Colossus battle. Her crimson eyes moved across the display quickly, but she was not only watching fracture markers. She studied roads, civilian movement, Hunter positions, side streets, bridges, and the spaces left between them.

"Where are your weakest deployments?" Ria asked. Aaron immediately enlarged the regional map.

"Northwestern Saitama lost one A-rank unit. Two serious injuries, no confirmed deaths. Chiba has three manifestations but Matsuda still has local reserves. Tokyo is pulling personnel from inactive Gate patrols. Kanagawa declared emergency mobilization two minutes ago." Ria leaned closer.

"You have too many people on the widest avenues." Matsuda glanced at her.

"That's where the largest monsters can move."

"That is where ordinary Dungeon creatures would move." Ria traced three smaller streets with one finger, then stopped over a service road behind an evacuation route.

"These things are changing direction when your formations shift. They are testing resistance." Hasegawa studied the same markers, her expression slowly hardening.

"You think they're choosing weak points rather than expanding randomly."

"I know they are." Ria traced the northwestern evacuation corridor southward.

"If another breach forms here, the civilians lose their only clean retreat." One of Aaron's tactical officers frowned.

"That's barely a road." Ria turned toward him.

"Can one of the creatures fit through it?" The officer hesitated.

"Some of them."

"Then the creature will not care what your city planners named it." Matsuda's mouth twitched despite himself. Aaron was already shifting personnel markers.

"Hasegawa, redirect two B-rank teams toward the north flank. Matsuda, can Chiba spare one mobile A-rank group?" Matsuda checked the terminal attached to his wrist.

"One safely. Maybe two if the southern manifestation stays quiet."

"One," Aaron decided.

"Keep the other. If the network redistributes again, I don't want Chiba exposed because Saitama panicked." Ria nodded once.

"Better." Matsuda continued looking at her for a moment longer. She noticed immediately.

"What?"

"You've done this before." Aaron suddenly became fascinated with the lower corner of the tactical display. Ria raised one eyebrow.

"Battlefield distribution?"

"Yes."

"Often enough." Technically true. The safest kind of truth. Before Matsuda could press further, the national emergency network activated. The central screen divided into several live feeds, most shaking from impacts, movement, or mana interference. Nobody on the other side appeared to have found a quiet office for the meeting, which was reassuring in the worst possible way. The first stable feed came from Osaka.

Ryuji Takeda filled most of the frame, blood streaked across one side of his forehead while orange emergency lights flashed behind him. Something enormous crashed through a wall somewhere off-camera, showering the road with masonry. Ryuji twisted away from the device and shouted, "Rear leg first! Stop wasting attacks on the shell!" before turning back as though nothing had happened.

"Shanks," Ryuji said, breathing slightly harder than normal, "if this meeting lasts longer than thirty seconds, Saitama is paying for whatever building falls while I'm standing here." Aaron's expression flattened.

"Osaka status."

"Three active fractures. We suppressed two smaller ones, but another opened beside the eastern evacuation route. Civilians are still moving." Ryuji ducked when a slab of black crystal flew over his head and shattered behind him. His usual grin vanished when Aaron asked about casualties.

"Four Hunters seriously injured. No confirmed civilian deaths in my sector. Southern line is taking the worst of it." Ria leaned toward the screen.

"Are the creatures moving evenly after emergence?" Ryuji frowned.

"No. Every time we reposition, part of the wave changes direction. Thought it was instinct."

"It isn't." Before he could respond, another feed stabilized. Shin Kurosawa, Kanagawa's Guild Master, stood beneath several enormous translucent barriers stretched between buildings like sheets of glass. Something struck one hard enough to send ripples of force across the entire structure, yet Shin barely shifted his posture.

"Kanagawa has four confirmed breaches," Shin reported.

"Two contained. One unstable above the coastal evacuation route. Yokohama Metropolitan Branch is holding the waterfront manifestation." A third feed opened immediately beside his. Leon Graves was apparently fighting while talking. Steel fragments hovered around him in a loose orbit—pieces of guardrail, torn vehicle frames, exposed rebar, and what looked suspiciously like half a traffic sign. Behind him, the Yokohama waterfront had become a corridor of crushed cars and smoking black crystal."'

Holding' is generous," Leon said, gesturing with two fingers. Three steel shards shot past the camera and struck something offscreen hard enough to produce an ugly scream.

"I've lost six traffic lights, twelve cars, and one coffee shop that charged criminal prices but made respectable espresso." Shin's expression remained unchanged.

"Civilian casualties, Graves." Leon's sarcasm vanished immediately.

"Minimal so far. Two Hunters critical. Waterfront evacuation is almost complete, but the main rupture is expanding. I can keep the monsters inside the industrial road. I cannot punch the sky shut." Aaron nodded.

"Do not attempt direct spatial suppression unless your anomaly team confirms stability." Leon raised an eyebrow.

"You say that like somebody on this call actually has a person capable of arguing with a dimensional fracture." Several nearby Hunters looked toward me. I sighed. Leon noticed. His expression changed instantly.

"Oh. That's the A-rank?" Aaron ignored him with impressive discipline. The Utsunomiya feed came next. Masato Fujimori stood in the center of what had probably been a normal intersection half an hour earlier, his massive frame coated in dust while slabs of broken roadway floated behind him. Aaron looked toward the screen.

"Fujimori. Tochigi status?" Masato stared calmly into the camera.

"Two breaches." Aaron waited. Masato remained silent.

"And?" Aaron eventually asked, one eyebrow beginning to twitch. A roar erupted behind Masato. He looked over one shoulder, lifted a hand and closed his fist. The feed shook violently as a stone pillar erupted somewhere offscreen, followed by one very brief scream and a crash heavy enough to distort the microphone. Masato looked back toward the camera.

"One breach." Ryuji's laughter exploded through the Osaka channel. Aaron closed his eyes. I liked Fujimori. The final major feed came from Nagoya. Renji Tachibana's camera struggled to track him because pale lightning kept carrying him across the battlefield.

"Five manifestations," Renji reported while moving.

"All individually low to mid threat. Numbers are increasing, though. We can keep them separated from civilian routes unless something heavier crosses." Hasegawa folded her arms and studied the combined feeds.

"Tokyo is seeing the same pattern. Small ruptures are appearing faster than large ones."

"Chiba too," Matsuda added. Ria stared at the national map while another cluster of red points appeared.

"Because the smaller fractures are not failed openings." Aaron looked toward her.

"Then what are they?"

"Deployment points." The answer had barely left her mouth when northwestern Saitama flashed crimson. An alarm shrieked through the command area. One of Aaron's officers spun toward the tactical display, his face paling as the new marker stabilized.

"External rupture forming behind the evacuation corridor! Forty meters from the secondary route!" Matsuda looked toward Ria. She looked back without satisfaction.

"I did warn you." Aaron was already demanding numbers. Twenty-three Hunters remained in the area, only four A-rank. Kurose and Ruruka were redirecting toward the new manifestation, but hundreds of civilians were still inside the corridor. Vael approached from behind us, his gaze settling on the shelter indicator.

"The Velmorans." Aaron understood immediately. His face did not brighten with relief. If anything, it became more uncomfortable.

"I'm not conscripting refugees."

"Good," Ria replied.

"Then ask them." Aaron nodded.

"That was my intention."

"I know, but make the conditions explicit." Ria rested one hand against the tactical console, and something older entered her posture for a moment—the ruler beneath the woman who argued about school lunches and blankets in my apartment.

"Their shelter remains theirs whether they fight or not. Their families keep food, medicine, protection, and legal consideration. Refusing must change nothing." Vael lowered his head.

"I will make the request." Ria looked toward him.

"As Vael." A small flicker of old habit crossed his face.

"Not as your commander."

"Not as my commander." Seris stepped beside him and folded her arms.

"I should probably accompany him." Vael gave her a weary look.

"Why?"

"Because you once asked a baker for temporary use of his kitchen by telling him to surrender the structure."

"The entrance had collapsed."

"You broke the wall."

"The wall was tactically irrelevant." Seris glanced toward Aaron with patient vindication.

"You see the problem." Aaron rubbed one hand over his face.

"Use the shelter channel." Vael and Seris moved toward the communications station while I watched Ria for a moment longer. Naturally, she noticed. Her crimson eyes narrowed.

"Why are you looking at me?"

"You're doing the thing."

"What thing?"

"The commanding thing." Ria straightened with offended dignity.

"I have commanded before."

"Yeah. I noticed." Understanding crossed her expression, followed immediately by irritation. Aaron suddenly found the tactical display fascinating enough to study from extremely close range, while I raised both hands before Ria decided to demonstrate a different kind of authority.

"Didn't say anything."

"You were thinking it."

"Can't prove that." Ria's eyes narrowed farther.

"I know your face."

"That sounds unhealthy." The look she gave me suggested she was considering proving exactly how unhealthy it could become, but the shelter channel activated before she had the chance. Vael delivered the request exactly as Ria had instructed. No title. No command. No implied debt. Civilians were trapped, experienced volunteers were needed, and anybody who refused would remain under the same protection as before. Seventeen volunteered within four minutes. Two more joined while the first group prepared.

Not everyone did. That mattered. One former soldier refused because his elderly mother could barely walk and he would not leave her alone. Another told Seris that he had spent enough of his life fighting and would not pick up a weapon again unless something entered the shelter itself. Several wounded survivors were medically prohibited from participating. The mother who had arrived with her sick son never approached the armory. She stayed beside his bed. Ria read that line twice. Aaron noticed.

"Something wrong?"

"No." Her expression softened by the smallest degree.

"She stayed." Aaron followed her gaze.

"Good?"

"Good that she believed us." Ria's fingers rested lightly against the console.

"She believed refusing would not cost her son his place." Aaron fell quiet. So did I. Nineteen volunteers could reinforce an evacuation route. That woman staying beside her child meant the promise had survived something harder. The northwestern sector deteriorated before the volunteers finished assembling.

"Command, this is northwestern unit!" a voice shouted through Aaron's radio, gunfire and screaming audible behind him.

"Secondary barricade is gone! Multiple hostiles entering through the service road!" Ria looked toward me. I was already raising one hand.

"Get the volunteers ready." The Warp opened directly onto a street full of screaming civilians. Heat, smoke, and the metallic stink of blood rolled through the corridor before anybody crossed. Evacuation buses sat crooked across several lanes, some still loading civilians while Hunters fought less than thirty meters away. Black crystal covered the road in jagged fragments, and one portable Guild barrier flickered so badly that every impact made it almost disappear. Talren crossed first.

The broad-shouldered Velmoran carrying Ardent followed immediately behind him, then the rest of the volunteers entered in pairs. Several looked toward the human Hunters with visible tension, but none had enough time to dwell on it. Something slammed into one of the buses. Metal shrieked. The vehicle rolled onto its side, windows exploding across the pavement as civilians scattered from the collapsing route. A massive creature tore through the wreckage.

It resembled a wild boar only in the broadest and least respectful interpretation of anatomy, with black crystalline plates covering its skull and shoulders while its jaw split vertically to reveal violet light pulsing between uneven teeth. Kurose met the charge before it reached the evacuees. His weapon smashed against the beast's skull hard enough to crack one outer plate, but the creature's momentum barely slowed.

Kurose's boots carved dark lines through the asphalt as it forced him backward, every muscle along his jaw tightening while he twisted the monster's head away from the civilians.

"Large target on the north side!" Kurose shouted, bracing both hands against his weapon.

"Keep everyone behind the buses!" Ruruka appeared on the creature's left in a burst of blue-white wind. Gale Acceleration carried her inside the first swing, and her sword struck the armored front joint hard enough to shower sparks across the road. The crystal held. Ardent's wielder saw the angle instantly.

"Inside the joint!" Kurose glanced toward him while still resisting the beast's head.

"I noticed!"

"You attacked the plate."

"I'm busy stopping it from eating people!"

"That does complicate precision." Kurose looked as though being crushed by the monster had become only his second-largest irritation. The beast roared and jerked its head upward. Kurose lost contact for half a second, and that was enough for it to surge forward. Ruruka vanished. Wind cracked across the avenue as Gale Acceleration carried her beneath the creature's shoulder. She planted one foot against fractured pavement, twisted her entire body and drove her sword into the softer seam behind the joint.

Lightning erupted through violet tissue, illuminating the monster's veins beneath the armor. The huge leg buckled. Ardent's wielder moved before the creature hit the ground. His curved sword followed the exact opening Ruruka had created, dark metal flashing once beneath the violet sky before the weakened joint separated completely. The beast crashed onto its side hard enough to shake the buses. Kurose rolled clear, came up on one knee and raised his weapon over the damaged skull.

"Now! Hit the break!" Hunters attacked from one side. Velmorans attacked from the other. A fire skill detonated across the cracked armor while a demonic spear punched beneath the jaw. Ruruka drove lightning through the opening again, and Kurose finished the sequence with a two-handed strike that shattered the remaining crystal and drove the skull into the road. The beast stopped moving. For less than a second, the two groups looked at one another across the corpse.

Then three smaller creatures dropped from the fracture. Both sides tried to establish their own formations. Both chose the same ground. It immediately went badly. A human fire-user released a wide blast through a gap just as two Velmorans shifted into it. Both demons threw themselves aside, one rolling behind an abandoned sedan while the other hit the pavement shoulder-first. Talren spun toward the Hunter, anger flashing across his face.

"Watch your line!" The Hunter glared back through drifting smoke.

"Then stop crossing it!" A crystalline hound lunged directly between them before the argument could develop. Talren cut from the left while the Hunter fired from the right, and the creature collapsed beneath both attacks. They stared at the corpse for half a heartbeat, then at one another. Talren raised his sword slightly.

"That worked." The Hunter looked almost offended.

"Don't sound surprised." Another creature came through the smoke. Talren stepped low without waiting, and the Hunter's next blast passed over his shoulder. The monster died even faster. Ruruka became the only reason the two formations did not repeatedly injure one another by accident. She moved through the center with wind curling around her boots, directing people between strikes instead of standing behind them.

Her sword flashed through one creature's neck, lightning snapping from the blade as she pivoted toward the human line.

"Two steps right!" Ruruka shouted.

"Velmorans, close the opening they leave. Nobody chases anything past the buses!" The formations shifted awkwardly. A winged monster dropped behind her. Ruruka did not see it. Someone else did.

"Gale swordswoman!" A Velmoran soldier slammed into the creature before its claws reached her back. His weapon caught the strike with a metallic shriek, and the force drove him half a step into the road. Ruruka turned instantly. Lightning flashed. Her sword entered through the monster's throat. The creature collapsed between them. Then both fighters recognized one another. The soldier's face tightened first. I recognized him too—the survivor who had spoken about Captain Veyr.

Ruruka's fingers tightened around her sword. Three years earlier, they had stood on opposite sides of an evacuation corridor not unlike this one. Ruruka had killed somebody he cared about. He had almost certainly fought Hunters whose names she still remembered. Neither had forgotten. No apology could erase that. No speech would make the dead less dead. Another creature charged from their right. The Velmoran stepped left while Ruruka moved right, their blades crossing through the monster from opposite sides.

Lightning flashed between the wounds, and the creature folded onto the pavement. The soldier looked toward her and gave one short nod. Ruruka returned it. Then both turned toward the next enemy. The second breach opened less than a minute later. Space tore apart above the northern buildings, violet light spilling across the rooftops while another cluster of monsters began pushing through. Kurose looked upward with visible disgust.

"Of course." Ardent's wielder stepped beside him, blood already darkening one side of his coat.

"You sound surprised."

"I was hoping reality might become less irritating." The Velmoran glanced briefly toward me.

"You know Arclight." Kurose followed his gaze.

"That seems unlikely." I almost felt offended. Almost. Then the national emergency network erupted again. Osaka reported a synchronized surge. Kanagawa followed. Yokohama. Nagoya. Utsunomiya. The seven-anchor network was accelerating everywhere at once. I closed the Warp and moved. For the next forty minutes, I stopped having a location. I had problems. A fracture opened inside the upper floors of a residential tower in Chiba.

By the time I arrived, smoke poured through shattered windows and fire had already spread across two levels. Local Hunters were trying to reach residents trapped behind a collapsed stairwell, but winged creatures kept moving through the darkness above them. I raised one hand.

"Illuminate." White-gold light flooded the tower, cutting through smoke and stripping away every unnatural shadow the creatures were using as concealment. Three shapes appeared clinging to the ceiling. Two more crawled along the outer wall, their black crystal reflecting the sudden brightness like wet stone. A family of four crouched behind the broken stairwell. One creature was already moving toward them.

"Arcane Chains." Pale bindings snapped around its wings and torso. I pulled once, and the monster crossed the hallway backward before slamming into a concrete wall hard enough to leave a crater. Another beast lunged from a doorway. Compressed water twisted around its limbs and throat before it reached me, tightening until the creature hit the floor with a furious snarl.

"Aqua Bind." I left it struggling and Warped beside the trapped family. The youngest child screamed when I appeared. Reasonable reaction.

"Guild evacuation," I told the parents while opening another corridor behind me.

"Go through." The father stared at the hole in space, then at me. His face had gone pale beneath the soot covering it.

"Is that safe?"

"No." His eyes widened. I sighed.

"Safer than the burning building." The man looked toward the flames licking across the ceiling, then back at the Warp.

"Fair." The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation. They went through. Good decision. The tower shook violently before I could move again. Something had struck the outside wall. I stepped through a broken window and looked down. A four-armed crystalline creature was climbing the exterior, each hand tearing chunks of concrete loose while it moved. Far below, an evacuation bus was still loading civilians. The monster saw it. Then jumped. I Warped into open air.

One moment I stood beside the tower. The next I was thirty meters above the street directly in front of the falling creature. Its face was difficult to interpret. I chose surprise.

"Arcane Chains." Pale bindings exploded around all four arms. Momentum continued carrying the creature downward, but I rotated my shoulder and pulled sideways. The chains followed the motion, dragging the monster out of its fall and swinging it through open air. It crashed through the upper level of an empty parking structure across the road. Concrete erupted outward in a rolling gray cloud. I started lowering myself. Then the residential tower groaned. That sound was worse.

One of the supports damaged by the breach finally split. The upper corner of the building shifted, glass cracking across multiple floors before several hundred tons of steel and concrete began folding toward the evacuation route below. People screamed. I dropped. My boots hit the road hard enough to fracture the asphalt. Both hands rose.

"Levitate." The building stopped falling. Not cleanly. Steel screamed inside concrete while the broken section shuddered above the avenue. Entire rows of windows shattered from structural tension, loose glass cascading toward the street until controlled wind caught the fragments and suspended them around the larger mass. Pain struck both shoulders immediately. The building shifted another half meter. I pushed harder. Pale mana rippled across the road as Arcane force and controlled wind fought gravity together.

"Clear the street!" I shouted. Hunters dragged civilians toward the barriers. One bus accelerated from beneath the suspended section while another group stumbled from the building entrance, coughing through the smoke. A woman tripped over broken pavement and nearly went down; a Hunter caught her around the waist and half-carried her toward safety. The structure groaned again. My right arm went numb almost to the elbow. I tightened the field.

A Warp opened several meters behind me, and Kurose emerged with an emergency response group already running. He made it three steps before the enormous shadow overhead finally registered. His pace slowed. Then stopped. Kurose tilted his head upward and stared at several hundred tons of concrete hanging above the avenue. His mouth opened slightly before he finally looked back toward me with an expression suggesting his ability to process my existence had reached another temporary limit.

"Arclight," Kurose said, pointing toward the suspended section.

"Are you holding the building?"

"Part of it," I answered through clenched teeth, tightening the field when another section shifted. Kurose looked up again.

"That is a lot of building."

"I noticed." A slab broke loose from the damaged edge. I caught it with a secondary current of mana, and another pulse of numbness ran through my hand. Kurose was still staring. I jerked my chin toward the civilians.

"You planning to admire it all night?" That restarted him. Kurose spun toward his response team and began shouting evacuation orders, his voice cutting through the sirens and collapsing concrete while I concentrated on keeping architecture where architecture generally belonged. Above people. Not on them. The final civilians cleared the danger zone less than a minute later. It felt considerably longer.

I lowered the broken section into the empty side of the avenue as carefully as several hundred tons of unstable concrete allowed. The mass struck the road with a roar, splitting apart and filling the street with enough dust to erase the nearby buildings for several seconds. Nobody was underneath it. Good enough. I flexed my right hand. Nothing. Then pain. Then pins and needles. Better.

"Ren." I closed my eyes for a moment. Of course. Ria stood several meters behind me, having arrived through one of Aaron's emergency transfer routes. Dark mana still smoked faintly around her hands, dust streaked her silver hair, and a thin cut crossed one cheek. Her gaze went directly toward my hand. I put it into my coat pocket. She stared at me.

"That was suspicious."

"I have pockets."

"You hid your hand."

"Sometimes hands go in pockets." Ria walked closer, her expression becoming increasingly dangerous.

"Give it to me."

"That is a strangely romantic demand."

"Ren." I surrendered the hand. She caught my wrist and sent a thin thread of dark mana through the damaged pathways beneath the skin. Her expression worsened almost immediately.

"You cannot feel these fingers."

"Somewhat."

"You are tearing the pathways further."

"There was a building."

"That is not a defense."

"It was falling on people." Ria looked toward the evacuation route, where the final civilians were disappearing behind Guild barriers. The anger did not leave her face, but something underneath it softened. She understood. That did not mean she liked it.

"If you collapse," Ria said quietly, releasing my wrist at last, "I will personally revive you."

"That sounds supportive."

"So that I may kill you afterward."

"Less supportive."

"I am an exceptionally supportive wife." I almost smiled. Ria noticed.

"Do not."

"I didn't do anything."

"You were about to." Aaron's voice erupted from the radio at her waist before she could continue.

"Northwestern corridor is collapsing. Major wave incoming. Ruruka and Kurose are requesting immediate reinforcement." Ria grabbed the transmitter.

"How many?" Aaron's answer came over the sound of fighting.

"Enough that counting stopped being useful." Ryuji Takeda's voice broke into the national channel a second later, noticeably less amused than before.

"Osaka just got a synchronized surge. All active fractures increased output." Shin Kurosawa followed from Kanagawa, heavy impacts booming behind his controlled voice.

"Confirmed. Barrier pressure doubled within twenty seconds." Leon Graves swore somewhere on the Yokohama channel before reporting, "Waterfront just opened another line. Whatever they're doing, it's happening together." Masato Fujimori came through next.

"Three breaches." Aaron paused.

"You had one." Masato looked somewhere off-camera.

"Not anymore." Renji Tachibana's voice arrived through electrical interference.

"Nagoya confirms synchronized escalation. The waves are changing direction after emergence. This is coordinated." Ria and I looked at each other. Neither of us needed another conversation. I opened a Warp. The northwestern corridor had become a war. Not a Guild incident. Not a monster outbreak. War. Three fractures hung above the avenue, black wounds pulsing beneath violet clouds while creatures poured into streets already buried beneath wreckage. Smoke rolled between the buildings in gray sheets.

Guild barriers flickered along the east, while the western side was marked by darker Velmoran formations and overturned vehicles dragged into makeshift cover. The distance between both groups had shrunk since I left. Not enough. Kurose fought near the center, blood soaking one sleeve while he drove his weapon through the chest of a crystalline beast. He kicked the corpse away and immediately turned toward another attacker.

Ardent's wielder was less than five meters from him, cutting down whatever slipped through Kurose's right side without either man acknowledging the arrangement. Ruruka moved between both formations in flashes of wind and lightning. Her ponytail had partially come loose, dark strands snapping across her face as Gale Acceleration carried her from one failing position to the next.

She landed beside a B-rank Hunter whose barrier had begun cracking, drove her sword through the creature battering against it, then disappeared again before the body finished falling. Vael was farther forward than anyone sensible should have been. Seris was beside him. Aaron was no longer behind the command vehicle. His gauntlets were on. A monster lunged toward him, but Aaron shifted before the attack properly began.

Clairvoyance sharpened his perception until every movement looked almost unfair; he stepped inside the claws, rotated beneath the creature's shoulder, and drove one reinforced gauntlet into the seam beneath its jaw. Psychic Resonance flashed. The monster simply stopped. Its body collapsed beside him. Another beast came from behind, but Aaron ducked before its muscles finished contracting.

"Kurose!" he shouted. Kurose glanced over while blocking another creature.

"Three steps right!" Kurose moved without asking. A crystalline spear punched through the exact patch of road he had occupied. He stared at the crater for half a heartbeat before looking toward Aaron.

"You could warn me sooner!" Aaron drove a gauntlet into another monster's throat.

"I did."

"That was half a second!"

"That was when you needed to move."

"That is not enough time for normal people!" Aaron twisted the creature's head aside and crushed the weakened joint.

"Then become faster." Kurose stared at him with open offense. Ardent's wielder cut down another creature beside him and glanced toward Aaron.

"Your Guild Master seems pleasant." Kurose wiped blood from his lip.

"You should meet him during paperwork season." A heavy crash shook the western line before the Velmoran could answer. Something enormous had broken through. Two volunteers disappeared beneath the force of its charge. One struck the hood of a parked car hard enough to cave it in; the other rolled across the pavement and did not immediately rise. The creature responsible stood nearly four meters tall, humanoid only in the vaguest sense.

One arm was grotesquely larger than the other, covered from shoulder to fist in overlapping black crystal. It swung. The Velmoran barrier shattered. Dark fragments of protective mana burst across the avenue, and three fighters went down. The monster charged through the opening toward the evacuation lane. Ria moved. For an instant, her gaze went toward the Velmoran who had been thrown against the car. Something sharp crossed her face—not panic, but anger deep enough that the air around her seemed to darken.

Then she was gone. Matsuda saw her cross the lane.

"Ria!" The creature's oversized fist came down. Concrete exploded. Dust swallowed the impact. Several nearby Hunters flinched. I didn't. Ria emerged beneath the monster's extended arm, silver hair streaked with dust while dark mana condensed along her forearm into a narrow blade. She drove it into the softer seam behind the elbow and dragged the edge forward as she ran beneath the limb. Black blood sprayed across her sleeve. The creature roared. Ria planted one foot against the damaged joint and used it as a step.

Then another. Then another. She ran along the monster's arm as it twisted violently beneath her, and for half a second her silhouette was framed against the violet fracture overhead. Then she jumped. The dark blade pierced the side of the creature's neck. The monster swung backward with its smaller arm. Ria released the blade and dropped beneath it, landing in a low crouch while broken glass skittered around her boots. The creature turned. Still standing. Ria's eyes narrowed with visible irritation.

"You are remarkably persistent." The monster roared and charged again. Ria waited until the enormous fist was almost on top of her before stepping aside, the strike tearing another crater through the road beside her. She placed one palm against its chest. Dark mana compressed between them until the air visibly warped.

"Black Dominion." The impact sounded like artillery. The monster left the ground. Its body crossed the avenue, smashed through two smaller creatures, tore apart a barricade, and disappeared through the front of an abandoned convenience store. Glass, shelving, and concrete erupted back into the street in a glittering cloud. Several Hunters stared. Ria did not. Her attention had already returned to the wounded Velmorans.

"Second rank, close the opening!" she ordered.

"Do not crowd around the injured. Leave a lane for the healers!" The Velmorans moved immediately. So did several human Hunters nearby. Matsuda noticed. His gaze followed Ria as she formed three dark spears and drove them through separate creatures before turning toward Aaron.

"You said she was a commander." Aaron blocked another monster's claws with one gauntlet.

"I did." Matsuda's eyes narrowed.

"What kind?" Aaron glanced briefly toward Ria.

"A competent one."

"That answer is becoming suspicious."

"Then stop asking suspicious questions." Hasegawa heard the exchange. Her expression sharpened. Aaron pretended not to notice. Farther forward, Vael had stopped focusing on the monsters closest to him. He was watching something behind them. A thin creature remained near the western fracture instead of joining the attack. Its long arms stayed close to its body, and its narrow head turned whenever the defensive formation shifted. Vael watched it through two separate exchanges. Then his expression changed.

"There." Seris followed his gaze while parrying a hound-like creature.

"Which one?"

"The thin one near the rupture." Seris glanced over.

"Ugly."

"Useful."

"Those are not mutually exclusive." The creature tilted its head. Three armored beasts immediately abandoned the Velmoran side and shifted toward a weakening human barrier. Seris's amusement disappeared.

"Oh."

"It is directing them," Vael said. Seris wiped blood from the corner of her mouth with one thumb.

"Then we should introduce ourselves." They moved. The distance between them and the thin creature was packed with monsters. Vael met the first one head-on, his sword crossing through its throat before it finished turning. A second attacked from the left, forcing him to catch the claws against his guard. The impact drove him sideways. Seris slipped past his shoulder. Her shorter blade entered the second creature behind the knee. It fell. Vael finished it while moving. A third monster lunged from his blind side.

Seris ducked. Vael's sword passed over her shoulder and entered the creature's open mouth. The timing was too clean to be improvised. They had done that before. Many times. A larger monster caught Vael across the shoulder before he could clear the next opening. Claws ripped through his coat and flesh beneath it, spraying blood across the pavement. Seris's face changed instantly.

"Vael!"

"I'm moving," he answered through gritted teeth, refusing to slow.

"That was not my concern."

"It should be. We are surrounded."

"Then stop getting cut." Vael drove his sword into the creature that had injured him and used the embedded blade to pull himself inside its reach. His elbow struck the exposed joint, forcing the arm down. He ripped the weapon free and tore it through the monster's throat. Seris cut another creature away from his side and stared at the blood spreading down his sleeve.

"You're getting slow." Vael looked genuinely offended.

"You are becoming irritating."

"Becoming?" A creature jumped between them. They killed it together. The coordinator began retreating toward the fracture. Vael saw it. His expression hardened.

"No." He pushed forward. The creature unfolded both arms, crystalline blades extending along them while black projectiles formed around its wrists. The first volley came fast. Vael knocked one aside, a second grazed his ribs, and the third would have struck his throat if Seris had not deflected it at the last instant. Vael reached the creature. Its first blade came high. He blocked. The second swept low. He twisted away, but crystal still opened a line across his abdomen. Pain tightened his face.

The coordinator leaned forward. It sensed weakness. Vael stepped closer. The creature hesitated. Wrong decision. His sword entered beneath its jaw and emerged through the back of its skull. Vael twisted once, and the creature went limp. The effect across the battlefield was immediate. Several monsters changed direction without warning. Two collided while trying to follow different paths, while another charged straight into a prepared human barrier instead of circling toward its flank.

A cluster pressing against the western line scattered and attacked whatever happened to be nearest. Seris looked around, breathing hard.

"They lost coordination." Vael pulled his sword from the corpse and looked toward the fractures instead of the swarm. His expression had gone grim.

"They were not merely coordinated." Seris followed his gaze. Vael tightened his grip around the bloodied sword.

"They were deployed." That word reached me over the battlefield. It felt important. I did not get time to decide why. All three fractures pulsed at once. The violet sky brightened enough to throw hard shadows across the avenue. Pressure struck the street a second later, forcing Hunters to brace and making several Velmorans look upward. The black openings widened. Rows of silhouettes appeared behind them. Not scattered beasts. Formations.

Dozens of creatures arranged beyond the ruptures as though somebody had positioned them before opening the doors. Aaron saw them. His expression hardened.

"Brace! Heavy wave incoming!" I rose above the avenue. From that height, the defensive problem became obvious. The humans still leaned east. The Velmorans still leaned west. They were fighting the same enemy now, but a narrow seam remained between both formations. The next wave was going to find it. Arcane light gathered around both hands. I reached toward the eastern rupture first.

"Spatial Lock." Pale geometry wrapped around the black wound, tightening until the fracture shuddered and narrowed. I reached toward the western one. A second lattice formed. Pain shot through my right shoulder. Fine. The center fracture widened faster. I raised my other hand and forced a third Spatial Lock into place. That one hurt. A lot. The damaged pathways through both arms felt as though somebody had threaded heated wire through them.

My fingers trembled before the third lattice finished forming, and blood began running beneath my nose. Aaron looked up and understood immediately.

"Arclight is restricting the breaches!" he shouted through the command channel.

"Hold the line and kill everything already through!" Kurose blocked a crystalline strike and looked skyward.

"How restricted?" Aaron punched another creature beneath the jaw.

"Enough!"

"That's not a measurement!"

"It's the one you're getting!" Kurose swore and returned to fighting. The eastern wave hit first. Three armored creatures struck the Guild barrier almost together. The translucent wall bent inward beneath their combined weight, cracks of white mana spreading through its surface while the Hunters behind it slid backward across the road. A fourth beast launched itself over the barrier. Hasegawa moved before it reached the ground.

She stepped onto the glowing wall, used the barrier itself as a platform and launched upward. Her weapon cut through one wing, forcing the creature sideways in midair. Matsuda attacked from below. His strike hit the exposed torso and drove the monster into the pavement. Two Velmoran volunteers rushed into the opening and finished it before it could rise. Hasegawa landed near them.

For the briefest moment, all three looked at one another, each visibly aware of how strange the arrangement would have seemed only hours earlier. Then another monster reached the barrier. Nobody had time to discuss whose kill it had been. The western wave struck seconds later. Crystalline hounds hit the Velmoran shields first, followed by heavier humanoid creatures wielding bone-like growths as clubs. One shield cracked immediately. Another held.

A volunteer was dragged forward by a hound's jaws before Talren caught the back of his armor and hauled him into formation again. Ruruka crossed the center lane in a burst of lightning. She struck one hound through the skull and stepped over the falling body. A larger creature swung toward her immediately. Ruruka ducked beneath the sweeping arm, loose strands of hair snapping across her cheek as displaced air tore above her head.

She twisted on one heel and drove her sword upward, lightning racing along the blade before it struck the thinner armor beneath the creature's shoulder. The monster recoiled, but another was already charging from her left. Ruruka glanced toward Captain Veyr's friend.

"Again! Cover the flank!" The soldier reacted immediately, stepping between her and the incoming claws. Steel shrieked against black crystal as the impact forced him backward, his boots scraping across the asphalt while strain tightened his face.

"Any time now, Gale swordswoman!" he shouted.

"Working on it!" Wind exploded around Ruruka. She vanished from his side and reappeared above the monster, both hands wrapped around her sword. Lightning flooded the weapon from guard to tip before she drove it through the opening he had created. The creature hit the road face-first. The Velmoran tore his blade free and looked toward her, breathing hard.

"Again?" Ruruka rolled one aching shoulder and raised her sword.

"Again." The next monster reached them before either could catch a full breath. Three years ago, those words would have meant another attack against one another. Tonight they meant the next enemy. Kurose and Ardent's wielder had developed their own version of cooperation. Less graceful. More violent. A crystalline beast slipped beneath Kurose's guard and struck him across the chest. He crashed through the side of a parked car, metal folding around his body. Ardent's wielder turned immediately.

Another creature lunged toward the wreckage before Kurose could rise. The curved sword intercepted its claws, but the impact drove the Velmoran to one knee. Kurose tore himself out of the car. He saw the demon struggling beneath the creature's weight. His expression changed. He charged. Kurose's weapon slammed into the monster's exposed side. Crystal shattered. Ardent entered the opening. The creature collapsed between them. Kurose caught the Velmoran by one arm and hauled him upright.

"Still alive?" The man coughed and wiped blood from his mouth.

"Unfortunately for you." Kurose almost laughed. A second monster attacked. They turned together without discussion. The eastern barrier failed. One layer shattered beneath an armored creature's charge. The second collapsed behind it. Hasegawa spun toward the gap.

"Reserve formation forward! Close it before they reach support!" There was no reserve close enough. The first monster crossed. Then the Velmoran shield line moved sideways. Nobody ordered them. One demon took the empty position beside a human barrier Hunter. Another stepped into the next gap before the wave could exploit it. The human Hunter glanced sideways. For a heartbeat, surprise crossed his face. Horns. Crimson eyes. Old Velmoran armor. Three years ago, that sight had meant enemy. He raised his shield anyway.

The Velmoran raised his. The next creature hit both. Their boots slid backward together. Neither fell. Another Guild barrier shattered farther north. This time, human Hunters moved toward the Velmoran formation. No command. No discussion. They simply filled the empty spaces. The invisible boundary separating the two groups began disappearing beneath necessity. A demon swordsman took claws through the shoulder.

A human support Hunter caught him before he fell and dragged him behind the line while another Velmoran filled the opening. A Guild fighter lost her weapon when a crystalline tail knocked it from her hands; Talren kicked a fallen sword across the pavement, and she caught it without asking whose weapon it had been. Their eyes met. Talren pointed toward the incoming wave. The Hunter turned and fought. No thanks. No speech. Later. If there was a later. Above them, the center fracture pushed harder.

My right hand went completely numb. Blood ran from my nose, then a warm line reached my ear. Annoying. Ria looked up. Even through the chaos, she noticed.

"Ren!" she shouted, crimson eyes widening when she saw the blood.

"I know!"

"Your pathways are failing!"

"Still working!"

"That was not reassurance!" A monster reached her before she could continue. Ria turned and drove a dark spear through its chest without taking her eyes off me. The center lattice flickered. For one terrible second, the rupture widened. I saw what waited behind it. Dozens. Maybe more. Rows of creatures standing beyond the breach. Waiting. Deployed. Vael's word returned. The fracture pulsed. Pain burned white through my arms. I clenched both hands. Arcane light exploded across the sky.

"Stay shut." The fracture screamed. There was no better description for the sound. Space folded inward with a noise like steel scraping along bone, and every intact window along the avenue cracked at once. The lattice tightened. The center opening narrowed again. Below me, the two formations finally stopped being two formations. A Guild shield-user lost the Hunter beside him, and a Velmoran swordsman took the empty position.

A demon stumbled under a heavy strike; a human Hunter caught him by the armor and shoved him upright. Kurose saw Ardent's wielder surrounded and crossed what had once been the dividing lane without even noticing he had done it. Ruruka landed among them. Vael moved beside Aaron. Seris covered Hasegawa's blind side. Nobody announced what had happened. Nobody needed to. They had become one line because dying separately had finally become too stupid to justify. Aaron saw it. Ria saw it. So did I. The monsters charged.

Aaron raised one blood-covered gauntlet.

"Hold the corridor! Nothing reaches the civilians!" Ria stepped into the center of the mixed formation, dark mana gathering around both hands.

"Do not chase beyond the line! Hold your ground and kill whatever enters it!" Different voices. Same order. The wave struck. A reinforced monster hit the center shield formation hard enough to lift two defenders from their feet. The human Hunter on the left lost his grip, but the Velmoran beside him caught the edge of the barrier and shoved one shoulder underneath it.

"Push!" the Hunter shouted through clenched teeth.

"I am pushing!" the Velmoran snapped, his boots carving trenches through the road.

"Push harder!"

"Excellent advice!" Both drove forward at the same time. The monster's balance shifted. Ruruka appeared over their shoulders in a flash of lightning and drove her sword through the opening at its collar. The creature collapsed against the shields.

"Good push!" she called before disappearing toward another gap. Neither defender had enough breath left to answer. On the western flank, three hound-like creatures crashed through Talren's group. One slipped beneath a spear and caught a younger Velmoran across the thigh, sending him to the ground with a scream. A human Hunter from Hasegawa's unit stepped over the fallen demon without hesitation and intercepted the next bite on a reinforced forearm guard.

The creature's jaws snapped shut less than a handspan from his face.

"Get him back!" the Hunter shouted. Two Velmorans dragged the wounded fighter away while the human strained against the monster's skull. Talren reached them from the side. His borrowed blade punched through the creature's throat. The body collapsed. The Hunter looked toward Talren, breathing hard. Talren raised one eyebrow.

"Still surprised?" The Hunter wiped black blood from his cheek.

"A little."

"Work on it." They turned toward the next target. Near the center, Kurose and Ardent's wielder had become irritatingly coordinated. Kurose drove one creature backward with two heavy strikes. Ardent flashed from the side and opened the knee. The monster dropped, and Kurose crushed the exposed head before it reached the ground. A second beast attacked from behind the Velmoran. Kurose saw it first.

"Down!" Ardent's wielder ducked immediately. Kurose's weapon passed over his head and struck the monster directly across the mouth. The Velmoran rose beneath the attack and drove Ardent upward through the jaw. The creature collapsed between them. Kurose exhaled hard.

"We're even." The Velmoran looked toward him, one corner of his mouth moving despite the exhaustion.

"We stopped counting." Kurose paused for half a second before nodding.

"Better." Vael's voice cut through the battlefield.

"Third spinal plate on the reinforced ones! Break the connector before striking the chest!" Aaron repeated the information immediately through the Guild channel.

"All ranged teams, third spinal plate! Ignore frontal armor until the connector is exposed!" Human attacks shifted. Velmoran attacks followed. Matsuda shattered the marked plate on one of the larger creatures with a heavy strike and shouted toward Talren's group, "Opening!" Three Velmorans attacked the exposed point. The monster folded. Matsuda stared at them for a fraction of a second, perhaps realizing that he had just deliberately created a kill for demons. Talren raised his sword toward him.

"Again?" Matsuda's expression hardened.

"Again." The next creature died the same way. Seris disappeared from the line. That was rarely comforting. Kurose noticed.

"Where did the other one go?" Vael blocked a crystalline blade and answered without looking toward him.

"If you mean Seris, somewhere unpleasant." One adaptive creature had begun changing its armor orientation whenever an attack approached, turning reinforced plates toward every threat it could see. Seris apparently decided that visibility was optional. She let the creature notice her. Then she ran into an alley. The monster followed. Kurose caught the movement.

"That thing is faster than she is." Vael's expression remained completely calm.

"No." The alley went quiet. Several seconds passed. Something crashed against a wall. Glass shattered. The creature roared. The roar ended abruptly. Seris emerged through the broken window of a storefront rather than the alley entrance, black blood covering one side of her face. She wiped her blade against a hanging curtain and glanced toward the others. Kurose stared.

"What happened in there?" Seris looked briefly over her shoulder at the dark interior.

"It became educational." Kurose opened his mouth. Then decided against it. Smart man. Ria had pushed farther forward. Seven dark spears floated behind her shoulders, each dense enough to distort the air around it. She swept one hand forward, and the projectiles crossed the avenue in streaks of black. The first pierced a winged creature and carried it into the side of a building.

The second took another monster from the air, while three more struck the road in front of a charging cluster and erupted upward in dark pillars, breaking the formation without releasing enough sovereign pressure to expose what she truly was. Ria moved through the opening personally. A creature swung toward her head. She ducked, silver hair passing inches beneath the claws while her mana blade crossed its abdomen.

Another attacked from her side; she stepped inside the strike and drove one elbow into the inner joint before releasing a concentrated burst of darkness through her palm. The monster spun away. Ria never stopped moving.

"Left flank, three meters forward!" she shouted while parrying another attack.

"Do not let them bunch against the broken barrier!" A human squad obeyed immediately. Matsuda noticed. So did Hasegawa. Neither questioned it. Ria had been right too many times. Hasegawa entered the same opening, cutting across the exposed flank of a creature Ria had turned sideways. Ria saw her movement, adjusted instantly, and sent a dark spear past Hasegawa's shoulder into a monster attempting to approach from behind. For a heartbeat, the two women looked at each other. Hasegawa gave one sharp nod.

Ria returned it. Then both turned toward different enemies. The battle kept going. Time stopped behaving properly. Twenty minutes. Thirty. Maybe longer. My world narrowed to three fractures and the pain burning through my arms. Every pulse from the network pressed against the Arcane lattices. Every time one tried to expand, damaged pathways screamed beneath the strain. Below, the mixed line bent. It did not break. A human shield shattered and a Velmoran replaced it. A demon went down and a Hunter dragged him back.

Kurose pulled Ardent's wielder from beneath a collapsing barricade; ten seconds later, Ardent hooked Kurose's armor and yanked him away from snapping jaws. Ruruka moved through anything threatening the center. Matsuda hammered one creature sideways and shouted for the Velmorans to finish it. They did. Aaron's Clairvoyance kept saving people from attacks they did not even know were coming.

"Duck!" he shouted. Three Hunters obeyed, and a black projectile passed over their heads. Aaron's eyes shifted toward Kurose.

"Forward!" Kurose moved without asking why. A creature landed behind him instead of on top of him. Aaron pointed again.

"Left!" Ruruka twisted and intercepted claws that would have torn through a Velmoran at her back. Nobody asked Aaron how he knew anymore. They listened. Then all three fractures pulsed again. I felt another formation building behind them. Enough. I extended Spatial Awareness deeper than I had before, past the local openings and the pressure hanging over the avenue, toward the pathways beneath them. Seven anchors. One rhythm. One structure. Power moved between them like blood through shared veins.

I could not safely sever that network without knowing what the resulting collapse would do. But I could make this section expensive. I drew more mana through damaged pathways. Pain flashed white behind my eyes. Ria looked up. Concern became fury the instant she realized what I was doing. I ignored her. Pale Arcane intensified across all three lattices. The fractures trembled. I rotated both hands. Space twisted. All three openings narrowed at once. Not closed. Compressed.

The formations waiting beyond them jammed against shrinking passages. Creatures collided inside the ruptures, several losing limbs when the dimensional edges cut through them. Others fell into the street already injured and disoriented. Aaron saw it immediately. His face changed. Then he understood.

"Push!" Aaron shouted. Ria heard him and snapped her head toward the line.

"Advance! Five meters, no farther!" This time, the orders came together. Humans and demons moved. The line surged. Three meters. Then five. Ruruka disappeared into lightning, Gale Acceleration throwing her through the center before the nearest creatures could react. Kurose drove after her with a roar, Ardent flashing beside him as the Velmoran matched his advance stride for stride. Vael raised his sword and pushed the left flank forward, while Seris slipped through the right like a blade searching for ribs.

Hasegawa's remaining ranged unit unleashed everything they had been conserving. Matsuda hammered reinforced targets until the spinal connectors Vael had identified burst apart, and human attacks poured into the openings a heartbeat before Velmoran weapons finished the kills. Ria stepped forward with darkness gathering around her shoulders. For one moment, the shape of that mana looked almost like the shadow of a crown. Nobody there understood what they had seen. Not yet. The monsters broke. Not instantly.

The first rank collapsed beneath the combined advance. The second tried to hold and failed when the compressed fractures behind them stopped feeding reinforcements fast enough. Creatures at the rear turned toward openings that had become too narrow to receive them. The mixed formation kept moving. A monster lunged toward Talren, and a human Hunter struck it from the side before his blade arrived.

Another leapt over the shield line, only for a Velmoran spear to catch it through the abdomen before a Guild fighter finished it. Kurose and Ardent's wielder reached the same armored creature at once. Kurose struck high. Ardent cut low. The monster dropped between them. Neither man looked at the other. They were too tired. The final creature fell almost twenty minutes later. There was no cheer. Nobody had enough breath. The avenue gradually became quiet beneath the continuing sirens.

Broken Guild barriers flickered and died. Black crystal smoked where it lay across the road, and violet light from the fractures reflected across pools of blood and shattered glass. Humans and Velmorans sat against the same wrecked cars because nobody cared which half of the street had belonged to whom an hour earlier. A Guild healer knelt beside a demon soldier and wrapped his wounded arm without asking which army had caused the older scars beneath it.

Talren sat against a concrete divider while a young Hunter handed him a bottle of water. He drank half and passed it back without thinking. The Hunter accepted it the same way. Kurose collapsed against the side of a ruined car. Ardent's wielder sat beside him because every other nearby surface was either broken, burning, or covered in monster blood. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Kurose glanced toward the curved sword resting across the Velmoran's knees.

"So that's Ardent." The demon immediately looked suspicious.

"Yes." Kurose studied the blade.

"Not bad." Ardent's wielder stared at him. Kurose frowned.

"What?"

"That was almost respectful."

"Don't get used to it." The Velmoran rested his head against the car and exhaled slowly.

"Likewise." Neither smiled. Both came dangerously close. Farther down the avenue, Ruruka stood breathing hard while the final traces of wind faded around her boots. Her hair had mostly escaped its ponytail now, damp strands clinging to her forehead and cheeks. Captain Veyr's friend passed nearby on his way toward a healer. They looked at one another. This silence lasted longer than the first. Eventually the Velmoran inclined his head. Not forgiveness. Not surrender. Recognition. Ruruka returned the gesture.

Then he continued walking. Ria moved through the aftermath more slowly. Her silver hair was tangled with dust and black blood stained one sleeve. She stopped beside an injured Velmoran long enough to check the wound, then crossed toward a human Hunter who had taken a shard of crystal through the thigh. The man stiffened when she crouched beside him. Ria examined the bleeding.

"You are losing too much blood." The Hunter looked at her in disbelief.

"I noticed."

"Then stop." He blinked. Ria sighed and pressed two fingers near the wound. Controlled dark mana gathered around the torn vessels, applying just enough pressure to slow the bleeding without damaging the surrounding tissue. The Hunter looked down at the black energy. Then at her horns. Then at her face.

"Thanks." Ria stood.

"Try not to require it twice." She moved on. The Hunter watched her leave. Nobody nearby found the exchange particularly strange anymore. That might have been the strangest part. I lowered myself from the sky. My boots touched the road. My knees nearly followed. Annoying. I corrected quickly. Ria noticed. Of course she did. Her head turned immediately. I straightened. She began walking toward me. I briefly considered Warping. Probably not worth the consequences. Aaron reached us first.

His gauntlets were covered in black blood, one side of his coat torn almost completely open. He looked toward the exhausted mixed formation behind us, eyes moving across humans and Velmorans receiving treatment beside one another. For once, he seemed uncertain what to say. Ria stopped beside him. Aaron eventually looked toward her.

"Trust may come later." She recognized her own words. Something softened in her expression.

"What we required was enough time to survive each other." Aaron looked over the ruined street.

"Apparently the monsters provided a practical demonstration."

"An inefficient diplomatic method."

"I've attended worse meetings." I joined them and glanced between both.

"You two done becoming friends?" They looked at me simultaneously. Ria's gaze dropped toward my hands. I put them in my coat pockets. Aaron noticed. His expression worsened. I regretted speaking. Vael saved me. He approached with Seris beside him, blood already soaking through a temporary bandage around his ribs. Despite the injury, his attention remained fixed on a tactical tablet in his hand.

"The coordinator creatures were not simply directing individual attacks," Vael said.

"They were returning to fixed positions before every major formation shift." Aaron's expression returned immediately to business.

"You called it deployment." Vael nodded.

"Because that is what it was." Seris raised her own device.

"I tracked three before the final push. Their positions align with the strongest manifestation points." Ria's face changed.

"Show me." We returned to the mobile command vehicle. The national emergency network remained active. Ryuji Takeda was still visible on one side of the display, though somebody had apparently convinced him to sit while a medic wrapped his forehead. Shin Kurosawa's barriers continued holding Kanagawa. Leon Graves appeared to have lost another section of waterfront railing and looked personally offended by it. Masato Fujimori had reduced Tochigi back to one active breach.

Renji Tachibana was still moving quickly enough that his tracker repeatedly vanished from Nagoya's map. Aaron muted the regional audio without closing the feeds. Vael placed his tablet beside the main tactical display. Seris began adding markers. One for each confirmed coordinator. Another for every major breach. Then smaller markers showing the directions each wave had taken after emergence. At first, the pattern looked meaningless. Modern Japanese roads did not resemble Velmoran terrain.

Buildings occupied places where fields might once have existed, railways cut through the geometry, and highways curved around structures that had never existed in the old kingdom. Vael ignored the city. He drew lines through it. Seris rotated the map. Ria stopped moving. I noticed.

"What?" She did not answer immediately. Her crimson eyes moved from one marker to another while Vael added another line, then another. The breaches formed arcs. Not perfect ones while the modern city remained visible. Seris removed the road overlay. Only spatial positions remained. The geometry became obvious. Ria slowly reached toward the screen. Her fingertip touched one of the outer clusters.

"These were staging positions." Aaron leaned closer.

"For what?" Ria traced inward.

"Movement toward a sovereign command installation." Hasegawa, now carrying a fresh bandage along one cheek, studied the empty center.

"A headquarters?" Vael shook his head.

"Not exactly. Velmoran forces used convergence formations around locations that could not remain spatially exposed. The outer positions stabilized movement inward while preventing enemies from identifying the central structure directly." Matsuda frowned.

"So the breach sites are defensive points around something."

"Partly," Seris replied. She shifted three of the newest markers across the display.

"But the sequence is wrong for defense." Aaron looked toward her.

"Explain."

"If Draeven were protecting something that already existed, the outer geometry would have been completed before the synchronized activity began." Seris traced the structure from the oldest manifestation toward the newest.

"Instead, every new breach is finishing another piece of the approach. It is forming from the outside inward." Ria's hand stopped over the blank center. Nobody spoke for several seconds. Her crimson eyes remained fixed on the empty space as if something invisible already occupied it. Recognition. The kind she wished she did not have. Aaron noticed too.

"Ria?" Her voice was quieter when she answered.

"A sovereign approach had only one destination." Aaron followed her gaze.

"The throne." Ria nodded once.

"Or the place where one was meant to stand." Matsuda looked at the outer arcs again.

"Then Draeven is protecting the route to his central installation." Seris shook her head.

"No." Everyone turned toward her. She reached across the display and shifted the newest breach marker into alignment with the rest. Another line appeared automatically, followed by a second. The empty region at the center became impossible to ignore. Seris looked directly toward Ria. There was none of her usual teasing in her expression now, none of the childhood friend who delighted in embarrassing Astrea over thunderstorms and old habits.

Only an intelligence officer remembering the architecture of a kingdom that had almost died.

"Ria, they are not protecting the road." Ria's face went completely still. Seris placed one finger against the center of the formation.

"They're building it." The command vehicle fell silent. Outside, humans and demons rested against the same barricades beneath the fractured violet sky. Some shared water. Others shared bandages. Several of them probably still hated each other. That was fine. Trust had never been required tonight. Only survival. I looked down at the map again. The seven anchors had synchronized. The external breaches had become deployment points. The creatures had moved according to old military geometry.

And every new rupture was constructing another segment of a path toward the center. The first breach had opened the door. Tonight, humans and demons had fought together to keep that door from swallowing a city. Now we knew where the road behind it was trying to lead. Somewhere beyond the map, Draeven was no longer waiting for us to discover his throne. He was building the road that would bring us to it.
