Crown Mall had survived the first day of the apocalypse better than most governments Mateo had seen. This was not praise. The parking lot was a maze of abandoned cars, delivery vans, shopping carts, and improvised barricades made from planter boxes. Blue light traced a route from the water tower to the old main entrance. The glass doors were blocked from the inside by tables and a pretzel kiosk. Above the entrance, half the mall sign still worked.
The other half blinked in a rhythm that made it look like the building was trying to remember its own name. Food smell drifted through the broken doors. After a day of wet cardboard, mold monsters, water wraiths, and laundry warfare, the smell of hot oil nearly knocked Mateo over. Rosa noticed.
"Do not make decisions while smelling fries."
"That should be on a city poster."
"I will put it under emergency preparedness." Valerie's people opened a narrow path through the barricade. They did not lower their weapons. Juniper's crew did not either. Cooperation, Mateo was learning, looked a lot like mutual suspicion with better paperwork. Inside, Crown Mall Food Court was bright. Not fully. Not normally. Half the overhead lights were dead, and the skylight above the central court glowed blue from the dome. But compared to the transfer station, the mall felt absurdly intact.
Tables had been pushed into rows. Restaurant counters served as command posts. A children's play area had become a sleeping zone. The smoothie shop was triage. The arcade entrance had a handwritten sign taped over it that read in huge marker: DO NOT OPEN. NO TICKETS ARE WORTH THIS. Evan would have appreciated the sign. One hundred and twelve residents turned to watch Juniper's delegation enter. Mateo came with Rosa, Mrs.
Vance, Niko, Darren, Imani the nurse, and Marcus, who refused to leave Nina's side until Nina told him he was hovering and she had not survived haunted washing machines to be smothered by a husband with a golf club. Nina stayed at Juniper. Marcus came because the Notice Board assigned him rescue liaison, and because Rosa told him if he wanted to make promises about routes, he could learn how routes worked. The food court had its own system window hovering above the fountain.
CROWN MALL FOOD COURT - LEVEL 1 SANCTUARY Residents: 112 Food: Stable, rationed Water: Stable Boundary Integrity: 52% Primary Authority Holder: Valerie Chen Special Asset: Kitchen Line Coordination Mateo looked at the fountain. The water had been drained. The basin was filled with canned goods, kitchen knives, syrup boxes, and glow-marked tokens. A plastic mall directory stood beside it with colored tape marking zones: sleeping, cooking, clinic, watch, storage, absolutely not.
"You have an absolutely not zone too," Rosa said. Valerie's expression did not change.
"The arcade." Darren leaned around Niko to look.
"What happened in the arcade?" Every mall resident within earshot said, "No." Darren stepped back.
"Understood." Valerie led them to the central food court tables. Someone had placed a laminated catering menu in the middle like a treaty document. The menu had burn marks around the edges.
"Terms," Valerie said.
"Food first," Rosa said.
"Terms first."
"Food is terms. We defended your water."
"Our shared water."
"Good," Rosa said.
"You are learning." Mateo sat because his legs had begun making arguments. The Level Up helped, but it did not erase everything. His body remembered running to the water tower, fighting through a laundromat, building municipal nonsense, and pulling cores out of monsters like he was clearing storm drains with opinions. Valerie placed three plastic baskets on the table. One held foil-wrapped sandwiches. One held paper cups of soup. One held ration bars from a sporting goods store.
"Good faith," she said. Rosa took one sandwich, opened it, inspected it like it might contain a contract, then handed half to Mateo. It was chicken, probably. Hot, definitely. Mateo ate two bites before remembering he was supposed to negotiate.
"Dangerous," Rosa said.
"The sandwich?"
"You with blood sugar." Valerie waited until everyone had eaten enough to stop looking like they might bite the tables.
"The mall has food production," she said.
"Juniper has salvage and space. The water tower created a route marker between us. We need a formal exchange system before people start improvising one badly." A blue window unfolded over the catering menu. MUTUAL AID CHARTER EXPANSION AVAILABLE Linked sanctuaries may establish exchange rules. Options: Barter Table, Ration Contract, Shared Work Order, Command Merger Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. Warning: Command Merger may cause immediate arguing.
"Not four," Rosa said.
"Agreed," Valerie said.
"Look at us," Darren whispered.
"Diplomacy." Mrs. Vance elbowed him. Mateo read the options. Barter Table was simple and chaotic. Ration Contract was organized and dangerous, because contracts could grow teeth. Shared Work Order made his class pulse in recognition. It sounded dull. That made it powerful. He opened the details. SHARED WORK ORDER Linked sanctuaries define tasks and rewards by urgent need. Example: Juniper provides barricade reinforcement. Crown provides meal ration batch. Authority Holders approve requests.
Residents may contribute for credit. Benefit: morale stability, clear records, reduced hoarding. Downside: paperwork.
"Shared Work Order," Mateo said. Rosa gave him a proud, exhausted look.
"That is the least exciting answer."
"Exactly." Valerie tapped the menu.
"It requires approval from both authorities."
"And records," Mateo said.
"We have Evan."
"We have Marisol," Valerie said. A woman at the noodle counter raised one hand without looking away from a notebook.
"I heard my name and reject additional work unless compensated in coffee."
"We have instant coffee," Mateo said. Marisol looked up.
"Real coffee or apocalypse apology powder?"
"Apology powder."
"Double compensation."
"Fair." The system accepted this as negotiation. Shared Work Order drafted. Required signatories: Mateo Ruiz, Valerie Chen Clerk support recommended: Evan Holt, Marisol Vega Initial exchange suggestions available. Suggestions appeared. 1. Juniper reinforces Crown Mall west doors. Crown provides 80 meal rations. 2. Crown provides kitchen sanitation supplies. Juniper provides mold containment guidance. 3. Juniper builds route markers. Crown provides portable food kits for rescue teams. 4.
Crown opens arcade for salvage assessment. Juniper assumes emotional risk.
"No," every mall resident said again. Mateo took in option four for a beat. Rosa pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Do not look interested."
"I am not."
"Your posture is."
"My posture has been unfairly profiled." A crash came from the west side of the mall. Everyone froze. Then a second crash. Valerie stood.
"West doors." They ran. Crown Mall's west entrance opened toward the old department store wing. The doors had been barricaded with benches, planters, and three coin-operated massage chairs. Something on the other side slammed into them again. The glass flexed. A planter cracked. Mateo activated Sort the Pile.
Boundary stress: west entrance Materials: benches, planters, massage chairs, department store mannequins, sale signs, garment racks Threat outside: Pack movement / retail constructs / discount pressure"Discount pressure," Mateo said. Rosa looked at the doors.
"I already hate it." The doors shattered inward. A wave of mannequins stumbled through. They wore clearance tags, torn scarves, and fragments of formalwear. Their smooth faces had blue price stickers where eyes should be. Their plastic hands opened and closed. Behind them rolled two clothing racks like antlers, pushed by something made of hangers and wire. Enemy detected: Clearance Dolls Level 2 Enemy detected: Rack Stag Level 3 Behavior: swarm / snag / mark down morale A sticker slapped onto Darren's chest.
It read nothing, because the system had learned not to generate readable text on enemies, but the emotional meaning was obvious.
"I have been discounted!" Darren shouted.
"Fight the economy!" Rosa shouted back. Niko slammed the Jaw Shield into the first mannequin. It burst into plastic limbs. Valerie's bread knife carved through a clothing rack. Mrs. Vance sent electricity through the metal hangers and made the Rack Stag kick backward. Mateo saw the west entrance failing. The barricade had been built to block people, not animated retail resentment. The mall needed reinforcement now, which meant the first Shared Work Order was writing itself.
Emergency Assembly available: Retail Return Wall Required: benches, planters, garment racks, massage chairs, pallet rack anchors Optional component: Public Complaint x1 Cost: 5 Focus"I need the complaint form," Mateo said. Rosa grinned in spite of herself.
"I knew that thing would be useful." He claimed benches, planters, garment racks, and the massage chairs. The chairs resisted in the way objects resisted when they believed they had one simple job and apocalypse had promoted them without training. Mateo added the Public Complaint. Blue light snapped everything into place. The Retail Return Wall unfolded across the west entrance. Planters became weighted bases. Benches locked into a waist-high barricade.
Garment racks arched overhead and snagged mannequins as they tried to climb. The massage chairs mounted themselves facing outward and began vibrating with hostile intent. The next wave of Clearance Dolls hit the wall and bounced. Assembly complete: Retail Return Wall, Grade D Effect: blocks light enemies, reflects swarm pressure, mildly humiliates retail constructs"Mild humiliation is not enough," Rosa said. Valerie stepped forward with three tray-shield bearers.
"Then add service." Her cooks threw boiling soup through the garment rack gaps. The mannequins melted at the shoulders. Darren fired a bolt into the Rack Stag. The lightning jumped from hanger to hanger, spelling a jagged shape in the air that looked almost like a receipt. The stag collapsed into wire. The west entrance held. Boundary breach repelled.
Shared Work Order completed: Emergency West Door Reinforcement Crown Mall owes Juniper: Meal Rations x80 Juniper owes Crown Mall: Continued inspection of retail threats within reasonable civic scope"Reasonable civic scope," Mateo read. Rosa shook soup off her spear.
"That phrase has never protected anyone." Valerie looked at the Retail Return Wall, then at Mateo.
"You build quickly."
"Only when everything is already broken."
"Useful specialty."
"Depressing specialty." They returned to the food court with eighty ration packs, a signed Shared Work Order, and a new problem. The mall had threats in the department store wing. Juniper had salvage but not enough food. Both sanctuaries had water now, and the route marker between them pulsed brighter every time someone crossed it. The system liked patterns. Patterns drew attention. Evan and Marisol met through the Notice Board after Mateo and Valerie signed the charter expansion.
Their first shared note appeared over the catering menu in two different handwritings. SHARED WORK ORDER LEDGER CREATED Clerk note: Please stop creating categories called Absolutely Not without subcategories. Assistant Clerk response: No. Rosa laughed so hard she had to sit down. Mateo loaded the first ration packs onto a flat cart. Niko and Marcus secured them with bungee cords. Priya added two trays of soup cups with lids. Mrs.
Vance traded wiring advice for a bag of coffee grounds that might once have been decent. Darren tried to remove the discount sticker from his vest and discovered it had become a status condition. Status: Marked Down Effect: minor morale penalty when ignored; minor morale gain when underestimated Duration: 02: 13: 44"I am weaponizing retail disrespect," Darren said.
"Finally," Rosa said, "your build has a lane." As they prepared to leave, Valerie walked Mateo to the mall entrance.
"The arcade is a problem," she said quietly.
"Everyone's reaction suggested that."
"Tickets animate. Prizes whisper. Something behind the prize counter is issuing quests to children." Mateo stopped.
"Children?"
"Two went in during the first hour. We got them out. They keep asking to go back." Rosa, who had absolutely been listening, appeared at Mateo's shoulder.
"No."
"We are not doing it now," Mateo said.
"Good."
"But we are doing it." Rosa looked at Valerie.
"This is your fault."
"The arcade existed before me."
"Then capitalism's fault. Fine." A blue route marker appeared beyond the mall doors, tracing back toward Juniper. Halfway along the line, another marker flickered faintly north, toward the municipal garage. Route Claim available. Suggested route: Mason Tower - Crown Mall - Juniper Transfer - Municipal Garage Benefit: vehicle recovery, fuel access, city radio hub Threat estimate: C+ Mateo looked at the marker. Unit Seven sat disabled on Mason and 8th, waiting like a bad idea with a steering wheel.
"C plus," he said. Rosa sighed.
"You used to complain when dispatch sent you to two mattress pickups in one morning."
"That was before mattresses stopped being the weirdest part of the route." Mateo picked up the Token Hook and looked at the ration cart, the route marker, the mall, the transfer station beyond it, and the faint line leading toward the garage.
"We take food home," he said.
"Then we get the truck."
