Murray said stealing evidence was not the correct term.
"Recovering," he said, sweating through his collar while the cash box rattled on its platform.
"Preserving. Securing for appeal. Possibly seizing, but only if we establish emergency municipal interest." Rosa watched the cable wrapped around the box pull tight enough to sing.
"Can we establish that before the machine eats us?"
"Ideally."
"I hate ideally." The Brineyard Recovery Core had stopped pulling them toward the pit, but it had not stopped thinking. Yellow light crawled up the cable from the red machinery below. Every few inches, the light printed a word on the metal. ASSIGNED. ASSIGNED. ASSIGNED. The cash box answered by locking itself harder.
Evidence object detected: Chain-of-Title Cash Box Contents: assignment papers, lien purchase records, secured-party fragment Protection: debt ownership cable / adverse possession claim / spite The box had old stickers on it under the soot. Mateo could see their outlines where rain had not quite reached: inventory numbers, a county barcode, a faded municipal property tag, and one square where a label had been scraped away with a knife. The scrape bothered him more than the locks.
Scrapes meant a person had stood here once with time enough to hide a name. Lenora saw him looking.
"That square used to identify the custodian."
"Person or office?"
"Both, if they wanted someone to blame." Rosa's expression did not change, but her spear shifted toward the cable.
"Then we are taking it before it remembers a scapegoat."
"Spite is a protection class?" Darren asked. Gloria wiped rain and grease from her cheek.
"Spite holds half my garage together." Mateo climbed down from Unit Seven's running board with the Appeal Stamp in one hand and the Red Tape Cutter in the other. His Focus felt thin, stretched across too many assemblies: Route Warrant, Cost Containment Loop, Archive Cold Boxes waiting back at City Hall, the Common Use Appraisal, the Appeal Docket. Every civic miracle came with a bill, even when the magic was blue instead of yellow. He hated that Brineyard understood that.
It was not fighting them like a monster anymore. It was waiting for them to accept the cost of fighting. Lenora knelt beside the cable and held the parcel map above it. Ink crawled from Brineyard through county lines, then split into little tributaries of ownership.
"Greycart does not own the debt now," she said.
"It assigned collection rights to the Receivership Board, but the board pledged them forward."
"Forward to who?" Rosa asked. The burned name on the assignment papers pulsed once.... HARBOR HOLDINGS TRUST. Murray shook his head.
"Could be one of several trusts. Harbor, New Harbor, Null Harbor, Black Harbor. The missing beginning matters." Darren pointed at the red pit.
"Ask the evil trash lamp." The Recovery Core spoke.
"Cost accepted."
"It has one answer," Darren said.
"Bad lamp." Niko held the Jaw Shield between the cable and the team. The yellow ASSIGNED marks kept trying to jump onto the shield rim. He scraped them off with a broken bolt. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
"If we cut the cable, does the box become ours?" he asked.
"Possibly," Murray said.
"That sounded bad."
"It could also destroy chain of custody."
"That sounded worse." Rosa keyed the radio.
"City Hall, we need public interest in the Brineyard evidence box. Fast." Maya answered from the lobby, breathless.
"Define public interest."
"People who got charged for things they did not ask for." There was a pause. Then Maya said, "That is everyone." The Front Desk Anchor began ringing upstairs, miles away but somehow audible through the rain at Brineyard. One bell. Then another. Then a cascade of complaint receipts poured through the open radio channel as voices joined the record.
"They billed my block for debris after the storm."
"We never got the roll-off they charged us for."
"My mother's alley cleanup got marked complete before the truck came."
"They said contamination and sent the fine to the city."
"They charged the food court for disposal during the outage, and we hauled it ourselves." Each complaint struck the Cost Containment Loop and turned one yellow ASSIGNED mark blue. Mateo saw the opening. But the complaints were not clean. They came with anger, contradiction, bad dates, half-remembered truck numbers, and the human habit of turning "I think" into "I know" when the wound underneath was old enough. The cable tried to use that. Yellow sparks crawled across the receipts, circling every uncertain word.
APPROXIMATE. UNVERIFIED. INCOMPLETE. Maya's voice cut through the radio.
"Tell them approximate still counts as a lead." Horace followed immediately.
"And incomplete records are not false records. They are invitations to corroborate." Mrs. Vance added, "I invite that cable to shut up." The yellow sparks hesitated. Mateo stamped three receipts in a row. RECEIVED. RECEIVED. RECEIVED.
"We are not using each complaint as proof by itself," he said.
"We are using them as a pattern." The Cost Containment Loop accepted that. Blue light ran through the receipts like a bus route finding stops. Sort the Pile offered him a new assembly.
Available materials: public complaints, Route Warrant, Cost Containment Loop, chain-of-title cable, cash box, Red Tape Cutter, Appeal Stamp, city emergency quorum Potential assembly: Evidence Hold Effect: preserves contested title records without accepting debt ownership Cost: 3 Focus Risk: summons title claimant"Of course it summons the claimant," Mateo said. Rosa did not blink.
"Do it." Mateo wrapped the cable in blue complaint receipts. Darren welded the papers into a sleeve with low lightning. Lenora copied the ownership path onto painter's tape and spiraled it around the cash box. Murray spoke the most careful sentence of his life.
"Juniper asserts emergency possessory hold over the chain-of-title documents for the limited purpose of appeal defense without accepting, purchasing, assuming, validating, or otherwise adopting the underlying debt." Everyone stared at him.
"That was normal for my people," he said. Mateo stamped the cash box. RECEIVED. Then he cut the cable. The Recovery Core screamed through every conveyor belt in Brineyard. Evidence Hold established. Debt ownership transfer denied. Chain-of-Title Cash Box secured. Warning: title claimant notified The box popped open. Inside were assignment papers, a ledger of surcharge transfers, a set of county board approvals signed by people who had used very expensive pens, and a glossy black folder with no logo.
The folder was cold. Mateo opened it. The burned name completed itself in blue fire. NULL HARBOR HOLDINGS TRUST Murray sat down on the wet concrete.
"That is not a local collector," he said.
"Normal," Rosa said.
"It is a secured debt vehicle. It buys distressed municipal obligations and forces restructuring through receivership. It does not want Juniper's money. It wants control over the assets that keep Juniper alive."
"That was horrible, but I understood it," Darren said. The black folder unfolded another page by itself. At the top was a map of Juniper. Not Lenora's map. This one was cleaner, colder, drawn in straight lines with no alleys, no porch routes, no bus detours, no food court, no borrowed chairs, no dog. The map labeled each node with one word. COLLATERAL. The word did not glow like the Tutorial. It sat flat and black, which made it worse. Tutorial panels were rude, but at least they admitted they were magic.
This was just ink. Ordinary ink. The kind a person signed under fluorescent lights while thinking about lunch, never imagining the paper could turn a water tower into collateral and a bus route into leverage. Mateo had always thought the scariest part of the apocalypse would be the monsters. Then the monsters kept explaining paperwork. Water tower. Garage. City Hall. Clinic. Library. Unit Seven. Mateo's mouth went dry.
"They put the truck on there." Gloria leaned over his shoulder. Her face went still in a way more frightening than anger.
"They put my garage on there." The Recovery Core pulsed red again. This time, it did not say cost accepted. It said, "Collateral identified." The entire facility shook. Unit Seven's wheels locked. Null Harbor claim activated. Collateral freeze attempt: Unit Seven Field Review Arrival: 16 hours, 44 minutes Rosa grabbed Mateo by the collar and shoved him toward the truck.
"Evidence in the cab. Everyone out."
"Unit Seven cannot move!" Gloria shouted. Mateo looked at the blue route line under the truck. It was freezing yellow from the tires inward. The truck was not stuck because Brineyard held it. It was stuck because someone had just claimed it. Pickles barked at the wheels. The bark printed one tiny blue word on the frozen route line. CONTESTED. Mateo lifted the Appeal Stamp.
"Good dog," he said. Then every trash bale in Brineyard turned toward them.
