Mateo had never trusted shortcuts. Shortcuts were how trucks got stuck under railroad bridges, how supervisors promised impossible deadlines, and how someone in a meeting said we can skip that step five minutes before creating six new steps with consequences. The County Turnpike Office had found a shortcut. That meant the city had a little over ten hours to prepare for whatever collected cities as payment. Unit Seven idled outside Juniper High Gym while the newly claimed node glowed behind them.
Inside, Maya and Dr. Patel turned Bleacher Fort into a shelter with frightening speed. Outside, the route network pulled every claimed node into Mateo's dashboard: Water Tower, Crown Mall, Municipal Garage, Northside Library, Riverside Clinic, Juniper High Gym. For the first time, it looked almost like a city. Little icons moved between the nodes.
Not people exactly, but promises of people: a food cart from Crown Mall, a water barrel from the tower, a medicine crate from the clinic, a garage wrench, a library card, a gym whistle. Each one drew a faint blue line as it moved. When the lines crossed, they strengthened. When they paused, Mateo could feel the whole network waiting for someone to make the next sensible choice. That was worse than a simple fight. A simple fight asked for force.
A city asked for timing, trust, and enough patience to let other people be competent without grabbing the wheel. Not a safe city. Not a pretty city. But one with lines connecting people who had started the day alone. Emergency civic event approaching: COLLECTIONS Hostile authority: County Turnpike Office Demand: one city Suggested response: Detour Protocol"I do not like protocols the system suggests after causing the problem," Rosa said.
"No one likes mandatory training either," Murray said, "but sometimes the fire extinguisher video contains useful information." Gloria made a noise over the garage channel.
"If you compare this to a training video again, I will assign you to tire inventory." Murray went silent. Mateo selected Detour Protocol.
DETOUR PROTOCOL Goal: prevent hostile authority from collecting Juniper civic core Required node contributions: Water Tower: pressure / boundary flow Crown Mall: food logistics / crowd support Municipal Garage: vehicles / fuel / barricades Northside Library: records / public access writs Riverside Clinic: medical triage / contamination screen Juniper High Gym: shelter / morale broadcast / runners Central anchor required: City Hall or equivalent Rosa took in the last line for a beat.
"City Hall is downtown." Mateo looked toward the dark skyline.
"Of course it is." Downtown Juniper had been quiet on the route map all day. Too quiet. The Tutorial had thrown monsters at transfer stations, libraries, clinics, tollbooths, and gyms, but City Hall sat under a blank gray square with no prompt and no promise.
"Equivalent," Darren said hopefully.
"Could a garbage truck be equivalent?" Unit Seven flashed its headlights.
"Do not encourage it," Rosa said. Horace came onto the radio from the library.
"City Hall holds the seal, council records, emergency charters, and the old bell from the courthouse. If this thing wants the city, it will aim there eventually."
"Eventually just became ten hours," Dr. Patel said. Maya's voice joined from the gym node, young but steadier than before.
"We can send runners. Not kids into combat, but messages between safe interiors. We know the school tunnels and the maintenance path behind the football field." If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"No unsupervised heroics," Rosa said.
"That is why I said runners, not heroes." Rosa looked mildly offended that the teenager had phrased it correctly. Mateo opened Sort the Pile across the linked route. Available assembly paths: 1. Barricade Ring - moderate defense, low coordination 2. Public Notice Net - high warning coverage, low physical defense 3. Detour Spine - route redirection, high coordination, requires central anchor 4. Improvised City Hall - risky, requires accepted civic authority"Improvised City Hall," Mateo read.
Every radio channel objected at once. It was almost beautiful. Valerie: "That sounds illegal." Gloria: "That sounds expensive." Horace: "That sounds historically complicated." Dr. Patel: "That sounds like it needs a tetanus shot." Murray: "That sounds procedurally unsupported." Rosa waited until they finished.
"Mateo."
"I am reading options."
"Your beard is considering a coup." The route map pulsed. A new warning appeared at the southern edge of Juniper. Hostile scout detected: Audit Van Level 6 Affiliation: County Turnpike Office Behavior: assess / mark / summon The first Collections vehicle arrived early. It rolled down Maple Street with no driver visible behind its tinted windshield. It was a white county van with black striping, roof cameras, side scanners, and a receipt printer mounted where the front license plate should have been.
Its tires left yellow toll lines on the road. A speaker on top clicked on. It moved with the confidence of an office that had never been punched. That, Mateo thought, was a mistake on its part. People retreated behind the Bleacher Fort windows, but they did not scatter. Maya's runners pulled the younger kids away from the doors. Dr. Patel moved her triage chairs deeper inside. Gloria shifted Unit Twelve into position without waiting for orders.
Rosa watched the van's cameras and lifted one hand, counting the sweep pattern under her breath. The city was afraid. It was also learning.
"Pre-collection assessment in progress. Please present city for valuation."
"Absolutely not," Rosa said. The van printed a notice and fired it at Unit Seven. Niko blocked it with the Jaw Shield. The paper hit hard enough to stick. Preliminary lien applied: Unit Seven Contested. Mateo's dashboard flashed red.
"It tried to put a lien on my truck." Gloria's voice went cold.
"Break it." The Audit Van turned its side scanner toward the gym. Yellow lines crawled over the doors, seeking the node claim. The Bleacher Fort lights flickered inside. Maya came over the radio.
"It is marking the shelter." Mateo did not have time for a perfect build. He claimed the broken toll barrier arms still bolted to Unit Seven's ram, the Public Access Writ from the Toll Warden, library receipt paper, gym megaphone parts, and a pressure valve Gloria had welded onto the truck after the water tower fight. Emergency assembly available: Detour Sign Effect: redirect assessment beam, create false route branch, brief hostile confusion Cost: 5 Focus"False route branch?" Darren said.
"We are making a municipal decoy?"
"We are making a sign," Mateo said.
"Historically, signs are powerful," Horace said. Rosa grabbed the gym's portable microphone from Maya and plugged it into Unit Seven's route channel.
"All nodes, Detour Protocol practice run. When I call, answer with your role. Keep it short. Keep it true." Mateo built the Detour Sign. It unfolded from the truck's side like a roadwork warning made by people with no budget and too much spite. Receipt paper became reflective backing. Barrier arms formed an arrow. The Public Access Writ burned blue across the middle in unreadable legal fire. The Audit Van's scanner swept toward it. Rosa called, "Water Tower." Mrs. Vance answered, "Pressure held."
"Crown Mall." Valerie: "Food moving."
"Garage." Gloria: "Fuel guarded."
"Library." Horace: "Records copied."
"Clinic." Dr. Patel: "Triage ready."
"Gym." Maya: "Shelter standing." The Detour Sign flashed. The Audit Van's yellow beam bent. Instead of touching the gym, it followed the false arrow into an empty drainage ditch beside the football field. The ditch immediately received a printed valuation notice and seemed offended.
"Assessment redirected," Mateo said.
"Can we hit it now?" Gloria asked. The Audit Van reversed. It did not flee. It recalculated. Its roof cameras spun, stitching together node lights, route markers, and faces. A black window opened above it. Scout behavior changed: summon.
"Hit it now," Rosa said. Unit Seven lunged. The Right-of-Way Ram struck the van's front quarter panel. Niko slammed the Jaw Shield into the side scanner. Darren grounded lightning through the Detour Sign's metal arrow. Gloria brought Unit Twelve across the street and boxed the van against a parked school bus. The van's printer screamed. Paper flooded the street, each sheet stamped with penalties, liens, fees, assessments, surcharges, and one line that just read ATTITUDE. Pickles barked. The Route Siren echoed.
Every paper marked ATTITUDE burst into harmless confetti.
"Good dog," Gloria said, with reverence. Mateo hit Compactor Bite. Unit Seven caught the van's printer assembly and crushed it flat. Hostile scout defeated: Audit Van Level 6 Recovered: Scanner Eye, Lien Plate, Black Ink Cartridge, County Seal Fragment Detour Protocol progress: 18% Warning: primary hostile authority has received partial map. The countdown changed again. Estimated arrival: 8 hours, 03 minutes. For a long moment, no one spoke. Then Murray cleared his throat.
"I may have a procedurally unsupported idea." Rosa looked at Mateo. Mateo looked at Unit Seven, the connected nodes, and the gray square over downtown City Hall.
"This day is getting worse," he said. Murray said, "Yes. But I know where the emergency charter copies are."
