Chương 14: The Gym Bell Rings

Juniper High Gym had been built to survive basketball seasons, school dances, pep rallies, budget cuts, and the smell of adolescent confidence. The Tutorial improved it by making the building actively hostile. Unit Seven rolled down County Road Nine with the Right-of-Way Ram still glowing on its front bumper. Blue route markers stretched ahead like runway lights. Behind them, the broken toll plaza clicked and cooled in the sunset, while the black countdown window hovered in the corner of Mateo's vision.
Collections notice active. Superior authority: County Turnpike Office Estimated arrival: 22 hours, 41 minutes Balance due: one city.
"I hate that it says one city like that is a normal invoice line," Darren said. Rosa did not take her eyes off the road.
"Murray once billed a department for one stapler."
"It was a box of staplers," Murray protested over the radio.
"You wrote one stapler, quantity twelve."
"That is called specificity."
"That is called how tollbooths get elected." Mateo would have enjoyed the argument more if the high school was not visible ahead, pulsing red through the trees. The campus sat on a hill behind football fields and a parking lot full of trapped cars. The old electronic sign at the entrance flashed half a message: WELCOME JUNIPER HAWKS, then SYSTEM EVENT, then PLEASE REPORT TO ASSIGNED ACTIVITY. Blue emergency lights glowed in classroom windows. Smoke drifted from the cafeteria roof. The gym was the worst part.
Its double doors opened and closed by themselves. Every time they opened, Mateo heard a crowd cheer from inside, too loud and too hollow. The scoreboard above the entrance had torn through the wall like a second face. JUNIPER 00 VISITORS 99 PERIOD: OVERTIME Dr. Patel leaned forward from the back seat.
"We have injured people inside?" Rosa checked the route prompt.
"Crowd density high. Morale unstable. Injured confirmed." The radio crackled. A teenage voice came through, trying very hard to be calm.
"Route Seven? This is Juniper High. We are in the gym. Coach Brandt is hurt. The bleachers keep moving when people panic. The scoreboard says we lose if the visitors hit one hundred."
"Name?" Rosa asked.
"Maya Chen. Student council secretary. Temporary because the president cried in the equipment closet and the vice president tried to fight a pom-pom."
"Maya, how many survivors?"
"Eighty-three in the gym, maybe twelve in the cafeteria hall, unknown in classrooms. We have three nurses, one coach, six kids with broken bones, and a mascot head that keeps whispering school spirit." Darren closed his eyes.
"I knew mascots were cursed." Mateo opened Sort the Pile. Juniper High Gym Status: unclaimed shelter node Residents detected: 95 immediate, 31 scattered Threat detected: morale contest / crowd panic / athletic equipment corruption Materials: bleachers, gym mats, volleyball poles, scoreboards, lockers, PA system, folding chairs, trophy cases, floor wax, marching band carts, cafeteria trays Warning: do not chant along. The gym doors slammed open. A basketball rolled out. It stopped in front of Unit Seven.
Then it unfolded into eight orange legs. Enemy detected: Dribble Spider Level 2 Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings. Behavior: bounce / trip / humiliate Pickles barked from Unit Twelve. The Dribble Spider froze just long enough for Gloria to run it over.
"I like school better already," Gloria said. They made entry through the side hall by the locker rooms. The main doors were a trap; even Mateo could see the red pressure lines around them. Unit Seven could not fit inside, so he parked the truck against the curb with the Right-of-Way Ram facing outward and the Route Siren linked to Pickles. The side hall smelled like rubber mats, old sweat, and ozone. Lockers trembled as they passed.
A row of combination locks clicked open one by one, releasing paper streamers that tried to wrap around wrists.
"No chanting," Rosa reminded everyone.
"What counts as chanting?" Darren asked. The PA system screamed, "LET'S GO HAWKS." Darren clamped both hands over his mouth. They reached the gym at 19: 08. The bleachers had become stairs, walls, and teeth. Survivors huddled at center court around a circle of gym mats. Nurses worked by phone flashlight. A big man with a whistle around his neck sat against the scorer's table with one leg splinted in yardsticks. A teenage girl with a clipboard stood in front of him like paperwork could be armor.
Maya Chen saw Rosa and lifted the clipboard.
"Visitors are at ninety-nine." The scoreboard buzzed. JUNIPER 00 VISITORS 99 NEXT EVENT: FREE THROW A hoop at the far end of the gym tore loose from the wall. It dragged itself across the court, net snapping like teeth. Basketballs rose from the racks and hovered behind it. Hazard event: Free Throw Line Make no sound. Miss no rescue. Stop no game.
"Those are terrible rules," Niko said.
"Gym class rules usually are," Mateo said. The first ball launched at a child with a broken arm. Niko moved without thinking. He raised the Jaw Shield and took the ball on the center plate. It hit like a thrown cinder block. The scoreboard ticked. VISITORS 99. 2"It scores partial points for bruises," Dr. Patel snapped.
"Absolutely not." Mateo claimed gym mats, volleyball poles, the scorer's table wheels, cafeteria trays stacked by the concession stand, and a marching band cart abandoned under the bleachers. The blueprint formed around the need in front of him. EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY: QUIET LANE Required: gym mats, cafeteria trays, cart wheels, volleyball poles, route authority Effect: silent evacuation path, ball impact reduction, panic damping Cost: 7 Focus"Building quiet," Mateo said.
"Best sentence I have heard in a school," Rosa replied. The Quiet Lane rolled out across the hardwood: gym mats locked edge to edge, trays beneath them sliding like muffled skates, volleyball poles forming rails wrapped in torn netting. The lane glowed faint blue and swallowed footfalls. Maya breathed through her nose like the room had asked a stupid question.
"Can I put freshmen on that during assemblies?"
"If we live, we can negotiate," Rosa said. The hoop charged. Darren grounded himself on the scorer's table and fired a thin lightning line into the backboard frame. The hoop spasmed. Rosa threw her No Parking spear through the net. Niko shoved the Jaw Shield under the rim and lifted.
"Mateo!" he grunted. Mateo grabbed the loose hoop with Scrap Pull and fed it into the Quiet Lane. The lane grew a curved guard at the front. Improvised upgrade: Ball Stopper, Grade D Quiet Lane stability: 79% The scoreboard buzzed again. The mascot head at midcourt turned toward them. It sat on the floor beside a duffel bag, brown and white feathers dusty, cartoon beak smiling too wide. No one was wearing it. It spoke anyway.
"School spirit required." The crowd trembled. Bleachers folded inward. Maya's clipboard shook in her hands, but she stepped onto the Quiet Lane and lifted her voice without chanting.
"Rows one through three, move when called. Injured first. No running. If you can carry supplies, raise a hand. If you are scared, raise a hand anyway and we will give you something to hold." A system window opened over her. Candidate role recognized: Shelter Captain Candidate: Maya Chen Accept temporary role? Maya looked at Coach Brandt. Coach Brandt gave her a thumbs-up and looked as if it cost him dearly.
"Accepted," Maya said. Shelter Captain active. Effects: crowd movement clarified, panic spread reduced, teenagers complain with purpose.
"That last effect is powerful," Darren whispered. It was also visible. The bleachers slowed wherever Maya pointed. Students who had been shaking found tasks small enough to hold. One boy with a bloody nose became the official keeper of flashlights. A girl in a basketball jersey took charge of passing water bottles along the Quiet Lane without spilling. A parent who had been praying into both hands opened them and started tying strips of gym towel around ankles that needed support.
Mateo felt the node respond to that more than it responded to any weapon. Salvage was not only metal and plastic. Sometimes it was frightened people becoming useful in the exact shape they could manage. The mascot head opened its beak. Every basketball in the gym launched at once. Dr. Patel called triage names. Maya called rows. Rosa held the lane. Niko became a moving wall. Gloria and Pickles blocked the side hall while Unit Twelve's horn blared outside every time something tried to circle around.
Mateo kept the Quiet Lane together as balls hammered the rails and the bleachers chewed at its edges. The scoreboard climbed. VISITORS 99. 6 VISITORS 99. 7 VISITORS 99. 8 The last injured student reached the hall at 99. 9. The mascot head leapt. Rosa caught it on the end of her spear and pinned it to the center-court logo.
"No chanting," she said. Pickles barked through the Route Siren. The mascot head deflated into feathers, foam, and one very relieved smell of old storage closet. Hazard event cleared: Free Throw Line Gym morale stabilized. Juniper High Gym claim progress: 48% The scoreboard went dark for three seconds. Then it lit again. NEXT EVENT: PEP RALLY From the cafeteria hall came the sound of drums. Maya swallowed.
"We do not have a band today," she said.
