Chương 42: The Third Key

Hester Crowl surrendered her brass key with the grimace of someone who very much needed her funding unfrozen. Dr Maud Brack provided the Bryology key with equal reluctance, producing a small, intricate silver key from a moss lined leather pouch. Professor Conrad Tiller did not have his key."It is in the conservatory," the towering Soil Alchemist said, crossing his massive arms.
"Locked in a secure cabinet." Bart adjusted his glasses and gestured for him to lead the way.
"Then shall we retrieve it." They left the manicured serenity of the West Quadrangle and walked toward the eastern edge of the academic grounds. Here, the flawless, blue tinted grass gave way to smelly dirt. The Department of Soil Alchemy was housed in a massive, soot stained stone conservatory. Jagged copper lightning rods spiked upward from the arched glass roof. Steam vents hissed along the masonry, and the air was thick with the scent of wet compost and sulfur. Gregor stopped at the heavy iron doors.
He looked at the soot and copper rods very deliberately, the thief pulled on his safety goggles from his pouch and snapped them over his eyes. Elian looked at him.
"Is that entirely necessary?"
"I survived a monastery where the bread tried to conquer the kitchen," Gregor said flatly.
"I have developed a reasonable distrust of anything involving ingredients, heat, and people insisting they know what they are doing. If the dirt starts bubbling, I am diving out a window."
"It is soil, Gregor," Bart said.
"That is exactly what the monks said about the dough," Gregor muttered. They pushed through the doors. The interior of the conservatory was less an agricultural facility and more an industrial hazard. Massive stone vats bubbled with thick, colorful muds. The air was sweltering.
"Where is the key?" Bart asked. Conrad had already rushed toward the far end of the conservatory, shedding his academic robes as he went. Underneath, he wore a heavy leather smithing apron and brass goggles. He plunged his hands into a pair of thick gloves that were stained purple to the elbows and grabbed a massive iron stirring paddle.
"I liked him better when he was arguing about dirt," Gregor whispered. Conrad seemed a bit frantic. He was standing over a massive copper cauldron. Inside, a thick, glowing crimson slurry was expanding rapidly, letting out deep burping noises that shook the floor. Bart walked closer, ignoring the intense heat. He checked the brass plaque bolted to the side of the vat. EXPERIMENTAL GROWTH MEDIUM - BATCH 42 Gregor pointed at the number.
"Is that good?" Bart looked at the boiling red soil.
"Traditionally, it is supposed to be an answer." The cauldron burped again, spitting a glob of mud against the stone wall. It immediately burned a hole through the mortar.
"Though I don't think it understood the question," Bart noted.
"Tiller!" Hester shouted over the hissing steam.
"What is that?"
"Runaway acidification!" Conrad roared, fighting to keep the heavy paddle moving through the thickening slurry.
"The nitrate concentrate is rejecting the substrate! If I can't stabilize it in the next couple of minutes, the entire east wing of this conservatory is going to become a very fertile crater!" Dr Maud took a sudden undignified step backward.
"The stabilisation table!" Conrad yelled, his massive shoulders straining against the churning red mud.
"Where is the stabilisation table?" Bart looked around the workstation. There were hundreds of loose papers, notebooks, and charts scattered everywhere.
"Which one?" Gregor asked.
"The emergency soil treatment schedule look for it!" Bart turned away from the boiling cauldron. He didn't know Greenhollow chemistry, and Restricted Inspection couldn't tell him how to fix an active alchemical reaction. But he knew how technical documents were organized. He spotted a massive, heavily dented filing cabinet bolted to the far wall. Bart strode over and began scanning the drawers. Cultivation. Substrate Preparation. Seasonal Reactions. Emergency Remediation.
He yanked the bottom drawer open, his fingers flying through the tabbed folders.
"Found it," Bart said calmly. Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings. Conrad stared at him through the steam.
"How?" Bart unfolded the laminated sheet.
"Alphabetization." He scanned the text rapidly. SLURRY DISCOLORATION: CRIMSON Probable condition: Runaway acidification Emergency treatment: Calcinated hearth ash Application: Rapid integration. Bart looked up.
"Where is the calcinated hearth ash?" Conrad pointed a purple-stained glove toward a large grey bucket resting on a high stone shelf across the room.
"There!" Gregor was already moving. He vaulted over a bubbling vat of blue mud, kicked off a sturdy potting bench, and snatched the bucket from the high shelf. He landed cleanly on the stone floor, spun, and executed a perfect dump directly into the boiling copper cauldron right as the red foam reached the brim. The cauldron let out a massive, wet SPLAT!! A thick puff of steam billowed toward the glass ceiling. The angry crimson slurry instantly settled and noise stopped.
The glow faded, and the mud rapidly cooled into rich, healthy looking brown soil. Conrad dropped the heavy iron paddle. He pushed his brass goggles up onto his forehead, staring at the perfectly neutralized soil. He looked at the bucket, at Gregor and finally at Bart.
"How did you know what to use?" the massive elf asked, his voice shaking slightly. Bart adjusted his glasses.
"The manual was very clear. Now, the key please?" Conrad pointed a trembling finger toward a heavy, lead lined cabinet near the back wall. He walked over and tried his cabinet key. It refused to turn. He swore under his breath.
"The heat has jammed the lock." Gregor crouched in front of it.
"Finally," he said, pulling a slim metal pick from his pouch.
"Academic work I'm actually qualified for." Three seconds later, the lock clicked. Inside, resting on a velvet cushion, was a heavy black iron key with a symbol of glowing green roots etched on it.
"Got it, Boss," Gregor said. Bart nodded.
"Excellent. Let us proceed." The Joint Deposit Archive was located in a dark, overgrown clearing behind the oldest greenhouses on campus. The building itself did not look like a library but like a tomb. It was a low, heavy structure built from black basalt, completely devoid of windows. The only entrance was a massive stone door, reinforced with iron bands and sealed by three enormous, distinct keyholes arranged in a triangle.
Above the keyholes, faintly visible through centuries of creeping ivy, was the familiar emblem of the Order of the Rooted Quill. Bart stood before the door with Gregor and Elian. Behind them, Hester, Maud, and Conrad stood in a deeply uncomfortable silence. They had spent the entire walk watching each other suspiciously, terrified that one of them was about to be proven right. Bart gave each of them the keys and asked to do the honors Hester stepped forward and slid her brass key into the top lock.
Maud placed her intricate silver key into the lower left. Conrad thrust his heavy iron key into the lower right. The three ancient scholars exchanged one final, bitter look, then turned their keys simultaneously. Deep within the stone, there was the gritting sound of ancient levers turning. The enchantments holding the door released one by one, letting out a faint puff of stale, dry air. With a grinding groan, the massive stone door swung slowly inward. Bart stepped inside. The air was frigid.
The interior of the vault was lined with narrow, dusty shelves holding thousands of sealed wooden deposit boxes. Most of them were covered in thick layers of undisturbed dust. A tarnished brass plaque was fixed to the wall beside a central deposit desk. Bart wiped away a layer of grime to read it. ORDER OF THE ROOTED QUILL EXTERNAL DOCUMENTARY AGREEMENT Partner Repository: INFINITE ARCHIVE Function: Independent attribution deposit and citation verification Elian stared at it.
"Keeper."
"Yes, just call me Bart please""Did your library work with everyone?" Bart looked down the seemingly endless, dust choked shelves.
"Increasingly, I am concerned that it did." He walked down the central aisle, scanning the faded brass index plates bolted to the ends of the wooden racks. He stopped halfway down the third row.
"Veridian," Bart read quietly. He pulled a heavy, sealed deposit ledger from the shelf and laid it carefully on the stone reading table. He blew a layer of dust from the cover, revealing the Rooted Quill emblem.
"Is the answer in there?" Hester asked, her voice tight.
"Let us see," Bart said. He opened the heavy cover. The first page was a standardized registration document. ORDER OF THE ROOTED QUILL JOINT DEPOSIT RECORD Deposit subject: ALDOUS VERIDIAN Primary deposit: Treatise on Living Cultures (Original Drafts) Bart ran his finger down the page, past the dates and the physical deposit inventory, until he reached the classification breakdown.
HISTORICAL SUBJECT CLASSIFICATIONS INCLUDED: Pomological Studies Fermentation Sciences Bryology Mycology Soil Alchemy Medicinal Cultivation Agricultural Thaumaturgy Total historical classifications: 7 Gregor leaned over the table. He looked at the list and counted slowly.
"Seven," Gregor said.
"Yes," Bart replied. Gregor looked at the faded emblem stamped at the bottom of the page. He pointed a calloused finger at the long quill, tracing the lines downward.
"Seven roots." Bart stared at the registration page.
"Yes." Behind them, none of the three department heads said anything. Bart looked back at the seven classifications, Three modern departments. Seven older fields. And one supposedly very busy scholar. He took out his notebook.
"We need the earliest records."
