Bart prepared carefully for the trip to Dhoravel. He packed the reconstructed catalogue record for Rickard's cookbook, a stack of acquisition forms, request and emergency loan agreements. Finally, he added an empty wooden crate lined with soft padding to carry the Memory Porcelain. Gregor packed 5 large sandwiches.
"Dwarves might not feed us if we make fun of their axes," the thief explained, stuffing the food into his leather pouch. Bart ignored him and wrote a quick sign on a piece of thick paper, placing it right in the middle of his desk. KEEPER TEMPORARILY OFF-SITE For emergencies, please speak to Albert (the skeleton). Do not open the glowing cookbook. Albert paused his sweeping and leaned on his wooden broom to read the sign.
"Should the final instruction be written in larger letters, sir?" Albert asked. Bart looked over at the heavy green cookbook. Its closed cover occasionally lifted against the blue containment barrier, as though the pages inside were trying to turn themselves.
"Much larger," Bart agreed. Bart rewrote the final instruction in letters twice the original size. Then he added a second notice beneath it. AUTHORISED PATRON CONSULTATION Patron: Morzath the Undying Supervisor: Albert, Chief Custodian Status: Permitted Restriction: Final recipe unavailable pending Keeper review Albert read the new notice.
"And if Lord Morzath objects to the restriction, sir?"
"Remind him that catastrophe class patrons are still patrons," Bart said.
"And if he continues to object?" Bart considered the question.
"Offer him the green tea." Albert looked towards the dark pouch in the Break Room cabinet.
"That may escalate the situation, sir." Bart secured his satchel and walked over to the plain white bathroom door. The heavy wooden sign hanging above the knob shimmered and changed. OUTBOUND ACQUISITIONS: DHORAVEL Destination: The Quiet Kilns of Veyr Destination Accuracy: 78% Cultural Advisory: The destination does not contain a forge. Do not ask where the forge is!! Gregor pointed at the final warning.
"What if we need a forge?"
"Why would we need one?," Bart said.
"What if we need an axe?"
"Then we will just leave." Bart grabbed the brass handle and pulled the door open. Whoosh. Gurgle. They stepped into the golden light. The white door vanished into thin air behind them. Far away, in a place completely hidden from the Infinite Archive, the Curator knew the exact moment Bart opened the door. The broken metal key hanging beneath his grey collar suddenly turned cold against his chest. He stood alone in a library where no book could be read. He called it The Closed Collection.
At the centre of the room stood a narrow iron lectern. Resting upon it was a single enormous ledger bound in black leather. The Black Catalogue contained no book titles. Titles created curiosity. It recorded only classification numbers, containment locations, and casualty estimates. During the black seed's brief connection, the Curator had seen enough of Bart's Archive. It was broken, chaotic, alive. The Closed Collection was the exact opposite. It was perfectly organised. It was completely silent. It was spotless.
Instead of books displayed on open wooden shelves, the room was filled with thousands of heavy, black iron boxes. The iron boxes were not ordinary vaults and their contents had been severed from every external catalogue, search spell, and portal network in existence. Only the Black Catalogue recorded where they had been buried. They could not be requested, borrowed, or accidentally discovered. Help support creative writers by finding and reading their stories on the original site.
They were not shelves instead graves of dangerous books. The Curator did not hate knowledge. He had simply stopped believing that every truth deserved a reader. SEALED ITEM 112 Cities Destroyed: 3 Access: Never SEALED ITEM 407 Subject: Resurrection Known Consequences: 812, 006 hostile returns SEALED ITEM 611 Subject: Children's Rhyme Moons Lost: 1 He held up the broken key. It still was somewhat connected to the damaged portal network.
Though unable to open a door or cross the Archive's defences, it caught fragments of information whenever Bart travelled. A fuzzy blue screen flickered in the dark air. ARCHIVE PORTAL ACTIVITY DETECTED Keeper: #4, 092 Destination: DHORAVEL Request Classification: Restricted Storage Materials Additional Request: Beverage Equipment Warning: Metadata integrity poor The Curator paused as he read the second request.
"At least he has his priorities in order," he murmured. He walked over to a small drawer built into the wall and pulled it open. Beneath a sheet of black glass lay a thin, shrivelled root. It was the sympathetic twin of the seed he had planted inside the botanical guide. The two had shared one magical signal. When the Archive classified and neutralised the parasite, the monitoring root had died with it.
BLACK SEED 173-B Remote link: Terminated Probable cause: Intake classification The Curator closed the drawer and it seemed the new Keeper had managed to survive. Previous Keepers had hidden dangerous knowledge behind layers of authority. The Curator had eventually learned that locks could be opened and rules could be rewritten. The new Keeper on other hand had reached the opposite conclusion. He had catalogued the danger, built it a safe room, and written a circulation policy.
The Curator was not certain whether that made him naïve or extremely dangerous. He turned away from the drawer and walked down a long row of iron graves. He stopped in front of a very old black box. DHORAVEL ORIGINAL ARCHIVE COMMISSION SEVENTH FIRING RECORD ACCESS: PERMANENTLY DENIED Bart's portal request showed that he was looking for six tiles of Veyric Memory Porcelain. The first six tiles formed the containment walls. The seventh was the Master Memory Tile.
It recorded every Keeper level decision made inside the Restricted Section: who entered, what they consulted, and what restrictions they imposed. Bart did not know it existed. The request for only six tiles suggested that the broken Archive System no longer knew the Master Tile had survived. But the Curator knew. He opened the black iron box. Inside lay a cracked firing shard, cut from the edge of the seventh tile before the Master Tile had been hidden beneath Veyr's oldest kiln.
Like all Veyric firing shards, it had remained magically linked to the completed tile until the final sealing. During that connection, it had copied fragments of the Master Tile's earliest memories. The original commission records had never named the hiding place directly. But the firing shard's fading connection had always pointed towards the oldest kiln in Veyr. A faint blue pulse travelled through the shard. The link was weak, but it proved the Master Tile still existed.
The Curator removed his right glove and touched the porcelain with his bare fingertip. Blue light spread across the shard. A man's damaged, exhausted voice filled the silent room.
"The six containment tiles have been installed," Keeper #4, 091 said. The Curator heard his own younger voice answer.
"And the Master Tile?"
"Hidden."
"You said it would be destroyed." The memory flickered.
"I tried."
"Then what does it still contain?" Keeper #4, 091's voice became almost inaudible.
"The part of the ending I could not erase." The shard went dark. The Curator knew what Keeper #4, 091 had attempted. He knew about the hidden tile and the records the old Keeper had tried to erase. He did not know what had happened after the Archive locked him out. The old Keeper key had gone silent three minutes before reality broke apart. The Curator stared at the darkened shard. He had made Keeper #4, 091 a promise.
That promise had survived the Keeper, the Archive, and centuries of disasters whose records now rested inside black iron graves. It would survive Keeper #4, 092 too, if necessary. The office of the Founding Kiln Records had guarded the existence of the Master Tile since the original commission. Its current Custodian might not recognise the Curator's name, but Veyric archival law still recognised the seal hanging beneath his collar. An original commission seal remained valid until formally revoked.
The Infinite Archive had fallen before it could revoke anything. The Curator drew out a black paper card. The broken key could no longer open doors, but the old document courier routes still answered its authority. He picked up a pen and wrote a precise message. To the Custodian of the Founding Kiln Records, A representative of the Infinite Archive is travelling to Veyr. You may provide standard containment materials. Do not permit him access to the Original Commission Archive.
Do not mention the Master Memory Tile. Report anything he claims regarding the archive. -The Curator The Curator pressed the broken key against the bottom of the message. A faded blue symbol appeared beneath his signature the surviving authorisation seal of Keeper #4, 091. The card vanished in a colourless flame. He returned the firing shard to its black iron box and slowly pulled his white glove back over his hand. Bart Sanders believed he was travelling to Dhoravel for six tiles. There had always been seven.
