Bart, Gregor, and Mera Pell stepped out of the elevator. Even through the barrier, Bart could smell the burnt sand.
"Stay exactly on the designated path," Mera warned, her voice slightly muffled behind her mask.
"Do not touch the walls. Do not deviate from the floor tiles. Kiln Zero does not understand the concept of a mistake. It only understands contamination and structural failure."
"Understood," Bart said. Mera tapped a control pad on her wrist. A thin blue guidance line appeared across the hexagonal floor tiles beyond the barrier. It flickered twice, directed them straight towards a blank wall, and vanished entirely. Mera stared at the empty floor and spoke "The designated path appears to have suffered some calibration drift across centuries." Gregor immediately dropped into a low crouch.
"Good," he said, his eyes darting across the microscopic gaps between the tiles.
"Now it is a spatial challenge." Gregor moved through the thermal barrier first. The heat pressed immediately against his white thermal coat, but he ignored it.
"Pressure plates," the thief whispered, " I have encountered the likes before".
"They aren't rigged to drop rocks. They are calibrated scales. Each tile permits only a narrow weight range. Step too heavily or spread the weight across the wrong combination and the floor drops out."
"That is correct," Mera said, sounding mildly surprised.
"How did you know?"
"I have spent my entire life avoiding being crushed by all types of security systems," Gregor said proudly. He moved forward, his footing remarkably light and precise. He gracefully hopped between three specific tiles, his leather boots making no sound. He paused, tested three neighbouring tiles with his fingers, and pointed to each in turn.
"Mera, left tile. Boss, the wide one beside it. Step separately and do not lean towards each other." Bart carefully followed his instructions. In this strange dungeon like place, Gregor was the expert. Then, a soft chime echoed from the ceiling. A sleek, white ceramic construct dropped silently from a maintenance hatch. It looked like a 6 legged mechanical spider, its joints glowing with blue energy. It landed perfectly on a wall panel and rotated its smooth, eyeless head towards Bart.
A pale blue light swept over Bart from head to toe.
DIAGNOSTIC SCAN COMPLETE Target: Bipedal Unit Warning: Structural misalignment detected in central support column. Action: Administering permanent fusion sealant. The construct raised two front legs. The tips whirred open, revealing nozzles dripping with a thick, rapidly hardening white resin.
"Boss!" Gregor yelled, reaching for his daggers.
"Wait…let me try something." Bart said sharply. He simply opened his Administrative Rights screen and stared directly at the mechanical spider.
LIMITED EMERGENCY INSPECTION WARRANT DETECTED Foreign administrative override permitted for visitor safety classifications only. Bart had spent nearly 90 minutes understanding Veyric regulations. He could guess how this facility thought based on the laws.
"The structural variation is pre-existing, documented, and compatible with normal operation," Bart told the construct, speaking in a firm, bureaucratic tone.
"Under Visitor Accommodation Clause 8. 4, it is classified as an authorised biological condition, not equipment damage." He submitted the correction through his inspection warrant. The construct froze. Its nozzles hovered inches from Bart's lower back. The construct's blue light flickered.
CLASSIFICATION UPDATED Lumbar irregularity: Authorised biological variance. Action: Repair prohibited without informed consent. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident. The mechanical spider retracted its nozzles, gave Bart a polite, mechanical nod, and scurried back up into the ceiling. A blue screen popped up in front of Bart.
PROCEDURAL SYNERGY DETECTED Comparative Bureaucracy applied to automated safety regulation.
KEEPER PROCEDURE UNLOCKED: SAFETY-CODE INTERPRETATION Function: Assists in identifying obsolete or incorrectly applied safety classifications. Current proficiency: Novice. Bart adjusted his heavy goggles.
"Definitions," he said quietly.
"They matter everywhere." Mera stared at him.
"You just filed a grievance with an automated surgical drone."
"I corrected its terminology," Bart replied.
"Shall we continue?" They pressed deeper into the kiln. Gregor navigated two more sections of pressure sensitive flooring, calling out precise weight instructions. Finally, they reached a massive sealed pressure door. Next to the door was a single, slightly raised pedestal. Before anyone could move, a harsh, pulsing red light flooded the corridor. A mechanical voice echoed from the walls.
STERILISATION PROTOCOL INITIATED Warning: Invasive biological civilisation detected. Location: Unsanctioned organic containment unit.
"What is happening?" Bart demanded. Mera's expression sharpened. She crossed to the emergency panel and scanned the readings.
"The system has detected an active fermentation culture. If it is not quarantined immediately, this corridor will be sterilised with liquid fire."
"Where is the quarantine unit?" Bart asked. Mera pointed at the raised pedestal next to the door.
"The balance plate doubles as the disposal incinerator."
"But we don't have an invasive biological civilisation!" Gregor shouted.
THREAT UPDATE: Unsanctioned culture multiplying rapidly. High concentrations of foreign yeast and aggressive bacterial fermentation detected. Bart slowly turned to look at Gregor. Gregor froze and looked down at his leather pouch.
"My sandwiches," Gregor whispered, horrified.
"The sourdough. The aged blue cheese. It's been incubating in the geothermal heat." Gregor opened his pouch and pulled out his remaining two and a half sandwiches. Mera checked the scanner.
CONTAMINATED ORGANIC MASS: 1. 26 KILOGRAMS. The number glowing above the disposal plate changed.
REQUIRED QUARANTINE MASS: 1. 26 KILOGRAMS. Gregor looked from the plate to his lunch.
"No."
"The facility has already weighed the contamination," Mera said urgently.
"It has judged them without knowing them," Gregor said, clutching the bread to his chest.
"Put the sandwiches on the plate, Gregor," Bart said gently.
STERILISATION IN T-MINUS 15 SECONDS. With tears welling in his eyes, Gregor stepped forward and gently placed his lunch onto the balance pedestal. A glass cylinder slammed down over the pedestal. The red lights vanished.
QUARANTINE SUCCESSFUL. CIVILISATION CONTAINED. The massive pressure doors hissed and slowly ground open. Behind the glass, a flash of blinding white heat vaporised the sandwiches in an instant. Gregor pressed his hand against the warm glass.
"They were good sandwiches," he mourned.
"Your sacrifice is noted in the official record," Bart said, patting the thief on the shoulder. They stepped through the open pressure doors and into the Original Commission Archive. Bart expected to see a pristine, perfectly preserved chamber of ceramic. Instead, they stepped into a zone of destruction. Half of the room was melted into glassy slag. The white ceramic had been fused together by heat so intense it looked as though a miniature sun had briefly ignited inside the vault.
But the other half of the room was completely untouched by fire. In fact, it seemed a bit unnatural. The ceramic walls in the second half weren't just frozen; they were grey, brittle with no warmth. Mera stopped at the edge of the ruined chamber. Behind her heavy goggles, her eyes widened.
"This is impossible."
"Was it an attack?" Bart asked, his breath misting.
"I don't know. But no Veyric weapon or kiln process could have done this." She studied the brittle grey porcelain.
"It is not frozen. Frozen material still possesses temperature. This material no longer recognises heat as a valid property." Bart moved closer and felt warmth being drawn from his skin.
"Is it forcing everything nearby to match its recorded temperature?"
"Yes."
"And what does it remember?" Mera stared at the wall.
"Nothing." Bart stared at the impossible damage. He remembered the inscription carved into the sealed metal vault beneath the Archive's ruined East Wing.
I should not have let them read the ending. Perhaps Keeper #4, 091 had not sealed this chamber merely to protect an administrative record. Perhaps he had been trying to contain whatever had happened here. Bart turned his attention to the centre of the ruined chamber. At its heart stood an ancient calibration platform. Six narrow channels led outwards toward empty sockets where the original perimeter tiles had once rested before being transferred to the Infinite Archive.
The central socket, built for the Master Tile, was larger. And completely empty. A faint blue pulse travelled through one of the six channels. It reached the empty central socket, then continued down through a hairline seam in the platform. Bart turned to Mera.
"According to the commission plans, where should the Master Tile be?" Mera did not answer immediately. She slowly raised one hand and pointed a trembling finger towards the empty central socket.
"There."
