Chương 18: The Art of the Deal
Keeper of the Infinite Archive [Cozy, Comedy, Mystery, Prog. Fantasy] · AsherVayne · 45 chương · ~20 phút đọc · Tạo 24/08/2026
The massive Golden Troll Quality Inspector leaned farther over the counter, casting a shadow that entirely swallowed Gregor.
"Rose syrup glaze," the troll rumbled.
"Monastery butter. Maybe far too much yeast." His golden eyes narrowed.
"Someone replaced the required stabilising fat. That pastry was baked without a licence holder and someone has been eating an unlicensed imitation Moonfold." Gregor slowly, carefully, stepped completely behind Bart. Bart adjusted his glasses and met the giant inspector's gaze with perfect professional calm.
"You have an excellent nose, Inspector," Bart said, using his firmest Library Voice.
"The Infinite Archive has provisionally classified the incident as a Category 4 Culinary Heresy involving a baker in training and significant structural damage." The troll paused, processing the bureaucratic terminology.
"Category 5," the troll corrected in a deep rumble.
"The reaction must have reached at least the courtyard." Bart calmly reached into his pocket, pulled out his pencil, and made a note on a scrap of paper.
"Noted. Category 5." He reached over the counter, grabbed Gregor by the arm, and pulled the thief forward. Before Gregor could squeak, the troll pulled a glowing red metal stamp from his pristine apron and pressed it firmly against Gregor's stained leather sleeve. It left a bright, glowing red mark directly over the syrup stain. EVIDENCE - DO NOT WASH Gregor stared at his arm in horror.
"These were my least dirty clothes."
"You will report this directly to Master Gurrum Goldbelly," the inspector ordered, releasing Gregor's arm.
"That was already our intention," Bart replied smoothly. The inspector paused again. His eyes moved from Gregor's EVIDENCE - DO NOT WASH stamp to the brass oven door medallion hanging from Bart's pocket.
"Abbot Halvorn named you a Brother of the First Oven?"
"Honorary," Bart clarified.
"After I prevented his monastery from becoming one very large pastry." The inspector's expression became considerably more serious.
"Acceptable," the troll said.
"Third aisle, centre pavilion. Do not dawdle." Honeyglass Market was a marvel of culinary architecture, but Bart kept his eyes strictly on the stall numbers. When they reached the centre pavilion, they found the grandest stall in the entire market. Built of polished dark wood and trimmed with gleaming brass, it looked like a temple of baking. Behind the massive counter stood Master Gurrum Goldbelly. If the inspector seemed large, Gurrum was akin to a titan.
He was a towering mountain of golden fur and muscle, expertly wielding a solid oak rolling pin the size of a tree trunk to flatten a sheet of dough with precision. But Bart's eyes were immediately drawn to the shelf directly behind the troll. Resting on a velvet lined ceremonial stand, enclosed securely inside a locked, thick display case, was a book bound in faded green leather. A brass plaque was bolted to the front of the case. SIGNED COPY FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF MASTER GURRUM GOLDBELLY Not for sale.
Consultation by permission only. Bart stepped up to the counter.
"Master Gurrum Goldbelly?" The giant troll did not look up from his dough.
"We are closed for custom orders. The displayed pastries are 3 silvers each."
"I am Bart, Keeper of the Infinite Archive," Bart said. Gurrum stopped rolling. He slowly raised his massive head, his golden eyes narrowing.
"The Infinite Archive still exists?"
"Barely," Bart admitted.
"But its cataloguing and lending systems are operational."
"And what does a library want with my bakery?"
"We were ordered by your Quality Inspector to report a Category 5 Culinary Heresy at the Monastery of the Seven Ovens," Bart explained.
"A rogue monk attempted to bake a Rose Pearl Moonfold without your Guild's stabilising fat."
"Fools. This is precisely why the Guild restricted the recipe," Gurrum growled. Bart nodded.
"That brings me to the book. I am here on behalf of a patron who wishes to consult Rickard's authoritative text. I require The Master's Guide to Advanced Pastry Baking." Gurrum just stared at him." And," Bart added, remembering his jammed coffee grinder, "I also require one drop of clarified Golden Troll Fat." Gurrum slowly set the tree trunk rolling pin on the counter. There was a very uncomfortable silence. Other trolls at nearby stalls stopped kneading dough, customers looked up and stopped chattering.
A dropped whisk clattered loudly against the cobblestones. Gurrum leaned over the counter, his massive face looming just inches from Bart's.
"You entered my stall," Gurrum rumbled, his voice dark and dangerous, "asked for my most sacred book, and then requested part of my body?" Bart considered the sequence of events.
"In retrospect," Bart said, "I should have begun with the document." The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
"Troll fat is not a commodity you simply ask for, human," Gurrum growled.
"Master bakers ceremonially set aside minute quantities of their own fat over many years. It is rendered, clarified and stored in a sealed personal reserve. Each drop represents a lifetime of work."
"I apologise," Bart said, completely sincere.
"I was unaware of the cultural significance."
"Apology accepted," Gurrum said stiffly.
"Now leave. The book stays here. And my reserve stays sealed." Bart did not leave. Instead, he reached into his pocket and unfolded the crumpled parchment they had obtained in the ruined kitchen.
"Before we departed the monastery, we secured this," Bart said, placing it on the counter. Gurrum examined the parchment.
"This is not Rickard's handwriting."
"No," Bart said.
"It is a transcription preserved by the younger monks." Gurrum read farther. Gurrum's dismissive expression slowly disappeared.
"But these measurements are Rickard's. Including the mistake he corrected in the published version."
"Then it proves the restricted recipe is still circulating," Bart said.
"And being baked by people who do not understand it," Gurrum growled. Bart reached into his satchel and withdrew a small package wrapped in wax paper, given to him by Abbot Halvorn before they climbed into the flour cart. He placed it on the counter and unwrapped it.
"This was produced when we stopped the expansion," Bart said.
"The monastery has provisionally named it a Saltfold." Gurrum broke off one crisp layer and tasted it. The master baker chewed thoughtfully.
"Rose-syrup. Heavy salt. Monastery butter." He took another bite.
"Stable," he admitted reluctantly. Bart adjusted his glasses.
"That was the objective."
"I will submit the transcription as formal evidence and permit the Guild to create a certified copy. The original transcription will be catalogued by the Archive," Bart continued.
"You will also receive the Saltfold sample and its preparation method, a formal report on the Category 5 incident, and a proper catalogue record identifying you as the legal owner of Rickard's signed copy. Furthermore, once the Archive's Culinary Wing has been restored, you will receive supervised access as its first registered external scholar." Gurrum folded his massive arms.
"A generous offer. But I will not surrender the book."
"I do not want you to," Bart said. He looked past Gurrum at the heavy honeyglass display case.
"But I do want to save it." Gurrum frowned.
"The book is perfectly safe." Bart explained.
"You have placed it directly behind a working pastry counter. The temperature fluctuations are drying out the binding. Give it another 10 years in that box, and the pages will turn to dust. I can even try to make a copy that preserves it""You claim the Infinite Archive barely survives, yet you offer to protect my book?"
"The building is damaged," Bart said.
"I still have resources. For a few days, I can keep one book cool, dry and properly handled." Gurrum looked back at the display case. For the first time, doubt crossed the giant troll's face. He folded his massive arms.
"Who is this patron?"
"Morzath the Undying." Gurrum went completely still.
"The Scourge of the Ashen Plains?"
"He recently acquired a library card," Bart said. Gurrum stared at him.
"That is somehow more concerning." He reached under his counter and pulled out a heavy ledger and a quill.
"It is a loan," Gurrum said, his tone softening with professional respect. He wrote rapidly, then spun the ledger around for Bart to read.
"7 days according to which calendar?" Bart asked. Gurrum paused.
"Gildaran." Bart wrote it down.
"Thank you." making a mental note to figure out how much that meant.

Gurrum stared at the amendment. Bart stared back.
"Acceptable," the troll eventually said. Gurrum signed the bottom of the page with a heavy flourish. Bart read the agreement one final time before adding his own signature. Gurrum summoned a Guild clerk. The clerk placed a fresh sheet beside Odo's transcription and copied every line with painstaking care. When the work was complete, Gurrum stamped the duplicate with the Guild seal and returned the original transcription to Bart.
"The Archive keeps the original transcription," Bart said.
"The Guild keeps the certified copy," Gurrum replied. Gurrum wrapped the remaining Saltfold and placed it beside the certified transcription. Only then did he unlock the glass case. He carefully handed the heavy cookbook to Bart. Then, the master baker reached beneath his counter and brought up a beautiful, sealed glass jar glowing with golden oil, his personal reserve. Using a tiny silver dropper, Gurrum extracted a single, perfect drop of clarified Golden Troll Fat and deposited it into a tiny glass vial.
He handed the vial to Bart.
"The book is a loan," Gurrum said.
"The drop is a professional courtesy for preventing a provincial pastry disaster from becoming a national one." It was deep into the night when the monastery flour cart carried them back to the courtyard. The air was cool, and the monks had long since retreated to their dormitories. Standing completely untouched in the centre of the cleared stone tiles was the plain white Staff Restroom door. Bart grasped the handle and pulled it open. Whoosh. Gurgle.
They stepped across the threshold, and the door vanished into thin air behind them. Bart carried the cookbook to the Intake Tray and lowered it carefully onto the glowing surface. The tray flared blue. Unlike the previous books, the cookbook did not rise towards a shelf. A translucent barrier formed around it as the System began registering the temporary loan.

Bart went completely still.
"Boss?" Gregor asked, noticing Bart's silence.
"Is something wrong?" Bart's eyes remained fixed on the name Keeper #4, 091 and the restriction beneath it. He thought of the sealed metal vault hidden beneath the East Wing rubble.
"No, Gregor," he said quietly.
"But I think we are going to need a much stronger Restricted Section."
