Custodian Mera Pell did not summon security, she simply pressed a small ceramic button on her desk. A moment later, two junior clerks entered the office, pushing a white ceramic trolley. Resting on the trolley were 12 massive, identical volumes bound in spotless white leather. VEYRIC ARCHIVAL BYLAWS Current Edition: 611th Revision The clerks parked the trolley next to Bart and quietly backed out of the room. Mera folded her perfectly manicured hands on the desk.
"You requested the complete rules, Keeper. There are currently 8412 active statutes governing Veyric ceramic engineering and inter dimensional liability." Bart looked at the 12 massive volumes. Then, he smiled. It was the terrifying, genuine smile of a career librarian who had just been given a properly indexed rulebook. Mera Pell's confidence visibly weakened and she looked a bit shaken. Gregor immediately stepped up behind Bart, rolling up his sleeves.
He had absolutely no idea what was happening, but he recognised a fight when he saw one.
"Do you need water, Boss?" Gregor whispered loudly.
"A towel? Should I watch the door?"
"I just need the master index, the revision history, the superseded clauses, and the definitions appendix. Don't worry Gregor," Bart said, pulling his chair closer to the trolley.
"Gregor, hand me my pencil." Bart did not read every page, reading everything was for amateurs. Librarians knew where the real answers hid. He read the table of contents. He read the index. He read the amendment register, and read every single section containing the words commission, successor, inspection, revocation, and liability. For 90 minutes, the office was filled with nothing but the rapid rustle of turning pages and the soft scratching of Bart's pencil.
Gregor paced back and forth behind the chair like a second preparing his fighter for an underground brawl. He periodically glared at the Custodian, offered Bart a canteen of water, and attempted to wipe imaginary sweat from Bart's forehead until Bart pushed the towel away. A blue System screen flickered in the corner of Bart's vision.
PROCEDURAL ANALYSIS ACTIVATED Definitions cross-referenced: 41 Conflicting authorities detected: 2 Potential exception identified: 1"She looks worried, Boss," Gregor whispered, eyeing Mera.
"I think you might be winning."
"Please stop judging this legal debate," Bart muttered, flipping to volume nine. He stopped at a status table attached to the original commission entry. COMMISSION NETWORK STATUS Primary structure: Infinite Archive Connection: Active - Severely Degraded Last integrity audit: 616 years overdue Original authorised officer: Keeper #4, 091 Administrative status: Unreachable Bart circled the final three lines and there it was.
He opened his Administrative Rights screen and directed it towards the original commission entry. The two blue seals flickered as they compared their authority records. SUCCESSION STATUS: RECOGNISED Mera's mouth tightened. After another ten minutes, Bart stopped reading. He closed the heavy book with a loud, satisfying thud. He carefully aligned his pencil next to his notepad, pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, and looked directly at the Custodian.
"I have reviewed the relevant statutes," Bart said calmly.
"Keeper #4, 091's sealing order is legally valid. It prevents the transfer, disclosure, or removal of the Master Memory Tile." Mera gave a stiff nod.
"Then we are finished." If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"We are not," Bart said.
"Because I am not requesting transfer, disclosure, or removal. I am requesting the mandatory safety inspection your own laws require." Mera frowned.
"Excuse me?" Bart tapped his notepad." Section 14. 3 - Continuing Material Responsibility. Any Veyric memory component maintaining an active magical connection to an external structure remains under the technical responsibility of the commissioning kiln." Bart opened volume nine and turned it to face her." Section 14. 7- Mandatory Integrity Inspection," Bart continued.
"Sealed status, private ownership, and foreign jurisdiction shall not prevent inspection where component failure may threaten inhabited structures, connected archives, or public reality."
"Section 3. 8 permits permanent closure where the contents present an existential information risk," Mera said, her voice tightening. Bart turned one page." Amendment 608," he replied.
"Permanent closure suspends public access. It does not suspend mandatory material inspection." Gregor leaned towards Mera.
"That sounds like Boss wins!."
"The sealing order supersedes standard administrative maintenance," Mera argued, though her voice was noticeably strained.
"Not according to Section 14. 9 - Successor Access," Bart countered.
"Where the original authorised officer is deceased, missing, or administratively unreachable, inspection authority transfers to the recognised successor of the commissioned institution. I am Keeper #4, 092." Mera just stared at the open book.
"You may deny me access," Bart said, his voice perfectly polite.
"But under Section 14, if you refuse an authorised successor's request for a mandatory audit, your office formally assumes uncapped liability for every structural failure caused by the unaudited component. Refusal Consequence: Automatic suspension of Founding Kiln certification pending structural review."
"A certification suspension would halt every Memory Porcelain export from Veyr," Mera said.
"That sounds inconvenient," Bart said.
"It would collapse at least 3 industries."
"Considerably inconvenient."
"The Infinite Archive is currently held together by one restored floor, several wooden shelves, and bit of my optimism right now," Bart noted. Gregor raised a hand.
"Also, The floor has cracks."
"Thank you, Gregor," Bart said.
"Many cracks," Gregor added helpfully.
"Sometimes it groans." Mera read the clause three times. Her eyes moved from the inspection requirement to the liability provision, then to the severely degraded network status displayed beside Bart's recognised succession record. She became noticeably paler. She closed her eyes.
"I dislike you."
"That does not appear relevant under the current edition of laws," Bart said gently. A soft chime echoed in Bart's ear. ADMINISTRATIVE RIGHTS UPDATED Foreign institutional procedure successfully interpreted. New Procedure Unlocked: Comparative Bureaucracy Current proficiency: Provisional Mera let out a sharp sigh and pulled a fresh pad of white paper from her desk. She began writing with rapid, angry strokes.
"I am issuing a Limited Emergency Inspection Warrant," Mera said sharply.
"Conditions are as follows. I will accompany you. No records may be copied. The Master Tile cannot be removed from the premises. You may inspect structural integrity and access metadata only. Any unexpected memory release immediately terminates the inspection."
"Acceptable," Bart said. Mera slid the transfer papers back across the desk.
"Then sign the completeness waiver for the six perimeter tiles." Bart took his pen. He drew a clean line through the completeness waiver on the fourth page. Beneath it, he wrote in precise letters: Recipient accepts temporary custody of containment tiles A-1 through A-6 without prejudice to any claim concerning omitted components. He turned the amended form towards Mera.
"Subject to your countersignature," Bart said. Mera stared at the amendment. Then she pressed her ceramic seal beside it with enough force to crack an ordinary desk. AMENDMENT ACCEPTED Only then did Bart sign beneath the seal. He pulled the staff-welfare form from the bottom of the pile.
"The brewer is a separate classification," Bart noted."It is," Mera said through tightly clenched teeth. Bart finished signing and said "Excellent ". He carefully packed the magnificent coffee maker into his padded satchel. Mera stood up, smoothing her white lab coat.
"Follow me. The Master Tile is beneath Kiln Zero. It was the first geothermal chamber constructed in Veyr, before standard safety laws existed." Gregor frowned, slinging his pack over his shoulder.
"That sounds bad.""It is the reason standard safety laws exist," Mera said flatly. She led them out of the office and down a pristine white corridor, stopping in front of a heavy set of reinforced ceramic elevator doors. Mera opened a wall compartment and handed Bart and Gregor two white thermal coats and pairs of heavy goggles.
"Wear these unless you would like Kiln Zero to classify your skin as removable contamination," Mera said. They quickly put them on. Mera pressed her hand against a glowing blue panel. The doors slid open with a heavy hiss of steam, and they stepped inside.
"Kiln Zero has been sealed for centuries," Mera warned as the elevator began to descend.
"The automated safety protocols are still active. They are 613 years old."
"How dangerous are they?" Bart asked.
"They were designed to sterilise biological contamination, enforce exact weight distribution, and repair anything the system classifies as 'broken,'" Mera said.
"Including visitors." Gregor smiled, patting his leather pouch.
"Finally. Something to test sneaking past." Mera looked at him.
"The last inspector who attempted that became part of the wall." Gregor slowly stopped smiling. He pushed his sandwich deeper into his pouch and took a step back. Bart adjusted his heavy goggles as the air in the elevator began to grow uncomfortably warm.
"Well, Gregor," Bart said mildly.
"You wanted to do some sneaking right?." The white ceramic doors slid open, revealing a vast shaft behind a transparent thermal barrier. Far below, furnace-blue light pulsed through the darkness.
