"Dejan, this has nothing to do with your grandson killing an innocent boy. Stop beating around the bush. Give a proper reason and take responsibility for your grandson's recklessness." Old Lady Linlyn completely ignored Dejan's explanation. Most members of high society already knew these details, understanding that the trial provided clues regarding the terrain they had to cross to reach the center.
Naturally, no one was willing to reveal the secrets they held to others, as doing so would put them at a disadvantage.
"I bet you all knew that secret. However, do any of you know what it means if someone wakes up from that slumber?" Dejan asked, a faint smile appearing on his face.
"Hahaha!" He suddenly burst into laughter upon seeing the crowd's expressions shift at this new information. In the next second, Dejan's demeanor completely transformed. Previously, he had appeared ready to accept any blame, yet now, his posture shifted as if he held the absolute highest position in the hall.
"Dejan, as I said, this has nothing to do with what I asked you. I expect a proper answer the next time you speak," Linlyn stated, greatly irritated by the old man's sudden change in behavior.
"Madam Linlyn, I will give you a proper answer if you agree to form a pact to work together, splitting the power and wealth equally." Although Dejan had conducted extensive research and collected every rumor throughout his life regarding these kinds of trials, he still lacked the necessary knowledge and strength to achieve his goals within this trial. However, he now held leverage. He could utilize these people's knowledge and strength to gain power for himself.
"Just what kind of secret do you hold that makes you think we will agree to team up with you?" Lothaire asked in a somewhat curious tone. Within this trial, out of everyone present, he believed himself to possess the most knowledge regarding the trial's mechanics. After all, his ancestors had already entered and successfully escaped with their lives. Therefore, he doubted Dejan possessed any secret information about the trial that could compel him to team up with these people.
"I have a Key to open the Torical Secret Chamber," Dejan said, an amusing smile appearing on his face. Once everyone heard Dejan's words, their expressions immediately changed. Dejan felt very content with the crowd's reaction, gaining full confidence that he would hold absolute authority over this group from here on out. This was because the Torical Secret Chamber was one of the many rumors known to everyone aware of the trial.
The Torical Secret Chamber was one of the primary reasons why some people chose to enter voluntarily. It was widely believed that the chamber held the secret to reaching the next section of the trial. Furthermore, the Torical Secret Chamber contained vast treasures that one could obtain if they managed to open it.
"How can we believe you truly possess a Key to open it? It could just be another rumor spreading through the world, right?" Lothaire leaned forward, his interest piqued.
"Perhaps it is merely a rumor, Mr. Lothaire. If you are not ready for this pact, I will not persuade anyone. However, if you agree, we can discuss this further," Dejan said nonchalantly. This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there. Everyone fell into deep thought. They knew that if Dejan's claims were true, this trial would become an enormous opportunity for them.
This was especially true for Gina; unlike the others who had entered the trial in the name of rescuing their family members, she had come purely to gain wealth and power. Thus, she suddenly stood up and declared loudly, "I will agree to this pact of cooperation, Mr. Dejan. Let us discuss the clauses of the agreement." Hearing Gina's brave and enthusiastic voice, everyone snapped out of their deep thoughts, immediately shifting their gazes toward her.
"If what you are saying is true, then there is nothing against working together," Lothaire said.
"Mr. Lothaire, rest assured in the integrity of my words. You will not be disappointed," Dejan said as his gaze swept over the two individuals who were still deep in thought.
"What do the two of you say?"
"As Mr. Lothaire said, if what you claimed is true, then we can work together. There is no problem on my side," Yvan replied.
"Very well. What about Madam Linlyn?" Dejan turned towards the old woman.
"I need the real reasons for your grandson's actions. My granddaughter was in deep sorrow. Only then will I decide to join hands with you," Linlyn said. She simply could not bear the grief her granddaughter had experienced within this trial. If she could not provide some form of resolution, it would mentally affect her.
"Hahaha!" Dejan burst into laughter after hearing Linlyn's words.
"The reason my grandson killed the boy was to gain a Special Ability to read the inscriptions of the Torical Secret Chamber," Dejan said. Silence! A heavy quiet permeated the chamber for what felt like an eternity. Everyone plunged into deep contemplation over the old man's words. Unable to comprehend the sudden news, they stood completely frozen, as though struck by lightning. What do you mean? How could he gain an ability by killing someone?" Linlyn finally asked, snapping out of her bewildered daze.
"As I asked earlier, do any of you know what significance it holds if someone wakes up from deep sleep?" Dejan repeated, bringing back the question they had completely ignored.
"Are you trying to say the boy your grandson killed was in a deep sleep and woke up?" Lothaire asked in a grim tone.
"Yes, Mr. Lothaire. The boy woke up within a few hours of arriving at this place," Dejan confirmed.
"I have never heard of anything like this before. Just how did your grandson know and act upon it?" Lothaire asked. If one were to measure the extent of knowledge held among the people present, it was apparent that he himself possessed the most. Yet, even he had not known that one could obtain the Ability to read the Torical Secret Chamber's inscriptions through such means. This was a complete surprise to him as well.
"There are always people who happen to know one or two things. I am quite certain I do not even know half of the things you know about the trial. I wouldn't ask you about those things, right?" Dejan said. However, the truth of the matter was that neither he nor Victor had actually known this beforehand. To think that killing someone who awakened from a deep sleep would result in this—it was a completely unexpected gain they had obtained.
This harvest would undoubtedly place them at the absolute top of the hierarchy. It was finally their time to rise to power. After all, those who took risks would always rise in life. Another reason he had hidden the fact that Victor killed the boy was purely to display dominance. Victor believed the action would somehow help their family obtain wealth and power within this trial. However, he had not known that this single act would provide them with such massive leverage over the city's elite families.
From here on out, the Pleasence Family would rise to the number one position without a doubt. Once the trial was over, even the Van Zandt Family would be forced to bow their heads. Dejan could hardly wait. While the rest of the room descended into heavy contemplation, he chuckled to himself, relishing the sudden windfall the boy had provided. While he was musing over the future, someone suddenly entered the chamber where they were holding their discussion.
He turned around to see exactly who possessed the courage to enter while the city's big shots were having a conversation.
'It must be Denis Hatfield, who refused to cooperate with the team and even refused to participate in this meeting,' Dejan thought to himself. However, to his surprise, it was not Denis. Instead, it was a group of people, and Dejan could easily recognize them." Edgar Bargen," Dejan muttered to himself when he saw who was barging towards them.
