Chương 159: CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-NINE: THE IRONFEN IN SPRING

Confluix's spring report, arriving in April of the eighth year, was the longest the Ironwyrm had sent. It covered the standard content — boundary monitoring, goblin clan returns, fragment degradation now complete. And then a section that was longer than any previous supplemental content, which Confluix described as: An observation that I have been developing for six months and that I am confident enough in to report.

The observation: the First Ones' maintenance activity had continued shifting since the February construction visit. The shifts were not random. Confluix had found a structure. The maintenance activity was, by Confluix's assessment, communicative. Not language. Not signal in the heliograph sense. Something more like the astronomical calendar in the constructions — information encoded in the pattern of behavior rather than in explicit marks or sounds.

What the pattern said, as best Confluix could interpret it: We have been watching. We see the question being answered. We are preparing. Preparing for what, Confluix could not determine. Marcus read the section four times. Then he wrote back to Confluix: Your interpretation — preparing for what? A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. Confluix's response came three days later: I believe for contact.

The preparation pattern is consistent with what the astronomical calendar shows for transition periods — specific activities that precede the moment when two systems interface. I want to be clear about my confidence level. The analogy may not hold. But the pattern is real and the preparation interpretation is the best fit I have found. Marcus showed Confluix's message to Danny.

"They are going to make contact," Danny said.

"Confluix says preparing," Marcus said.

"Not imminent."

"Preparing means the decision has been made," Danny said.

"The preparation is the implementation." He paused.

"The question is whether we are ready."

"You said that once before," Marcus said.

"You said the constructions were the test — the demonstration of readiness. We brought Old Stone. We studied the markings. We understood what was built."

"Yes," Danny said.

"And they noted it." He paused.

"The preparation began after we showed we understood what was built. The next demonstration is—" he paused again "—the foundational document."

"They can't read the document," Marcus said.

"No," Danny said.

"But the document is not for them. The document is for us — it is the explicit statement of what we have been doing. The act of making it explicit is itself a demonstration." He paused.

"The same way the constructions were not for us but were demonstrative to us. The First Ones made their building explicit. We are making our building explicit." Marcus was quiet for a long time.

"Then we finish the document," he said.

"Yes," Danny said.

"That's why I'm still writing it."
