He brought Confluix's June report to the full council in October, three months after he had received it. The delay was not strategic avoidance. He had been processing it — letting the information settle into the picture of everything they knew, testing his hypothesis against the evidence, consulting Confluix through the heliograph for clarification on specific points. He had wanted to bring the report to the council when he had enough understanding of it to answer the questions the council would have.
He put the report on the table.
"Confluix found something in the deep Ironfen," he said.
"Evidence of prior presence. Markings that predate the Adversary, the goblin clan settlements, and anything in the regional historical record." He paused.
"Old stone constructions, worked surfaces, specific markings that are manufactured rather than natural. The working is precise — not primitive. Intentional and skilled." He paused again.
"Confluix's best hypothesis is that these are First Ones constructions. The same civilization referenced in Old Stone's clan memory — the ones who were here before the goblins, who the clan tradition describes as having left, or retreated, or gone somewhere else." The council absorbed this.
"How old?" Chung said.
"Confluix's estimate: hundreds of years minimum," Marcus said.
"Possibly longer."
"What are the constructions?" Hargrove said.
"Functional? Defensive? Ceremonial?"
"Unknown," Marcus said.
"Confluix describes them as purposeful without being able to determine the purpose. The layout suggests organization — designed, not random." He paused.
"The specific location matters: the Adversary's core was in this area. The disruption of the ecology around the core, and then the restoration after the operation, uncovered what had been there before."
"The Adversary wasn't random," Danny said. He was at the end of the table with the specific quality of someone who had been thinking about the implications since Marcus had shown him the report privately.
"It displaced itself into a specific location that had prior significance. Whether that was intentional or coincidental, I don't know. But the location isn't arbitrary."
"The First Ones built something there," Okafor said.
"And then the Adversary arrived at the same place through the same transition that brought us here."
"Which means the First Ones' constructions and the Adversary's arrival in that location may be connected through the transition itself," Marcus said.
"I don't know how. Confluix doesn't know how. But the connection is worth understanding." You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
"The boundary," Vance said.
"Old Stone's clan memory has the First Ones establishing a boundary between the Ironfen and the territories to the north. Confluix has been monitoring the boundary since the alliance was established and has found evidence of active maintenance — structural interventions that are more recent than the historical constructions."
"The First Ones are still there," Danny said.
"That is Confluix's hypothesis," Marcus said.
"Present on the other side of the boundary. Maintaining it. Watching." The room was quiet.
"Watching us?" Hargrove said.
"Watching the Ironfen," Marcus said.
"But the Ironfen includes us, now. Whatever we have done in the Ironfen — the operation, the Adversary's resolution, the goblin clan returns — has been visible from the boundary." He paused.
"It was not invisible."
"Have they made contact?" Chung said.
"No," Marcus said.
"Confluix has found no evidence of direct communication. But the maintenance has continued. Confluix's interpretation: whatever they are, they are not hostile. A hostile actor watching a territory for this long from a position of apparent capability would have acted. They haven't acted."
"Patient," Danny said.
"Patient," Marcus agreed.
"The word Confluix uses is 'waiting.'""Waiting for what?" Okafor said.
"We don't know," Marcus said.
"That is the most important thing we don't know." He looked at the council.
"I want to go north again," he said.
"To the constructions. With Confluix. To look at what's there and to see if there's a way to understand what it means." He paused.
"And I want Danny with me."
"Why Danny specifically?" Hargrove said. Marcus looked at the end of the table.
"Because the First Ones built something that has been maintained for hundreds of years," Marcus said.
"Whatever else they are, they are people who build things that outlast the people who built them. And Danny is the person who has been thinking most clearly about what that requires." He paused.
"If there is a way to make contact with whatever is on the other side of the boundary, it will require someone who can communicate across the gap between what they are and what we are. Danny grew up in that gap." Danny said nothing. He was looking at the table with the expression he had when he was working through something significant.
"Yes," he said finally.
"I'll come."
