Chương 135: CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-FIVE: ALDRIC'S RESPONSE

The response from King Aldric — he had been king for two years now, the regency term concluded, the succession framework's transition managed without the crisis that the framework's second-year test had threatened — arrived in the third week after the declaration. It was not a condemnation. It was not a recognition. It was an invitation.

King Aldric wrote, in his own hand, in the formal language of royal correspondence: that the Kingdom of Valdenmarch, through its sovereign, noted the declaration with interest; that the succession framework's recognition clause had established the march's sovereign character two years prior; and that the king would be honored to receive the Warden of the Ashford March in the capital for a formal state visit at a time of the Warden's choosing. A state visit.

The language was precise: not a diplomatic visit, not a commercial meeting. A state visit between sovereigns. Vance read the invitation and said: "He's accepted the implication of the recognition clause."

"Two years late," Hargrove said.

"No," Vance said.

"Why now?" Chung said.

"The declaration made inaction more costly than action," Vance said.

"Before the declaration, the recognition clause was a diplomatic convenience — it gave him credit for recognizing our sovereignty without requiring him to operationalize what that meant. The declaration forced operationalization." She paused.

"A king who acknowledges a sovereign's existence and then ignores that sovereign's formal declaration of their sovereign character looks like he doesn't believe his own acknowledgment."

"The state visit," Marcus said.

"What does it require from us?"

"Preparation," Vance said.

"The protocols for a state visit between sovereigns — the march and the kingdom are not equivalent in scale, but the equivalence of sovereign status is the point of the visit, not the scale. The protocols should reflect that." She paused.

"I'll design them."

"How long?" Marcus said.

"The visit should happen in autumn," she said.

"That gives four months. The preparation requires two." She paused.

"The preparation is also an opportunity."

"For what?" Marcus said.

"The state visit will produce a formal agreement," she said.

"Not the succession framework — that's already established. Something additional. The relationship between the march and the kingdom needs a formal bilateral framework that goes beyond the succession context." She paused.

"I've been thinking about what that framework should cover for six months. The declaration creates the moment to propose it."

"Draft it," Marcus said.

"I've been drafting it," she said. Of course she had.
