The ride back from the Ironfen constructions took two and a half days. The February cold was present and insistent, and Marcus and Danny and Mensah rode in the quiet of people who have encountered something significant and are processing it rather than discussing it. Mensah had taken measurements. Systematic, methodical documentation of every stone's position, every mark's location, the specific geometric relationships between elements.
He had applied the notation system he had developed for the goblin language work — a way of recording spatial and geometric information that the standard written language did not efficiently capture. Danny had written twelve pages of notes during the visit. Not on the stones themselves — he had left the physical documentation to Mensah.
He had been writing about what the arrangement implied about the people who built it: what you had to know to build a calendar of this precision, what you had to believe about the importance of time and observation, what kind of civilization organized itself around this kind of sustained, generational project. He showed Marcus the notes on the second day of the ride.
"They built for the long term," Danny had written.
"Not for immediate function — the calendar's precision exceeds any practical agricultural or ceremonial need. They built it because they believed precision over time mattered. They built it as an argument: here is what sustained attention to the sky produces. Here is what you can know if you watch long enough." He had paused in the writing.
"They are the original not-knowers. They didn't know what they would find when they watched the sky. They watched and they recorded and they built the system that made the accumulated watching legible." Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere. Marcus read this and thought about the foundational document Danny was writing and about seven years of building by not-knowing toward what the situation required.
The First Ones had been doing the same thing for hundreds of years. The scale was different. The domain was different. The principle was the same.
"You're going to write about this," Marcus said.
"In the document," Danny said.
"Yes. The First Ones are the longest-running example I've found of the principle. Centuries of sustained not-knowing toward what the sky would reveal." He paused.
"They didn't stop when they understood the sky. They built a system for maintaining the understanding and continued to add to it."
"The institution," Marcus said.
"The institution," Danny confirmed. They rode into Greyhold on the third day in the late afternoon, and Marcus went to the study and wrote in the notebook: The First Ones built a calendar of extraordinary precision over hundreds of years. They maintained it. Someone is still maintaining it. They have been watching the Ironfen — and us — for longer than we have been here. Danny believes they are waiting for us to demonstrate readiness for contact. The demonstration is understanding what they built.
We will bring Old Stone. We will study the constructions. We will demonstrate the understanding. This is the next thing.
