The eighth year of Marcus Cole's life in Aethermoor began in spring. He stood on the north wall on the first morning of the eighth year. The accounting was different from the seventh year's accounting in a way he had not anticipated. The seventh year's accounting had added the names to the numbers, which had changed the nature of the accounting. The eighth year's accounting added the constructions — the evidence of the First Ones, the maintained boundary, the calendar of hundreds of years.
The accounting now included things that were larger than the organization's seven years and that placed the seven years in a context they had not previously had. The organization was seven years old. The constructions were hundreds of years old. The maintenance was ongoing. He was standing at a specific position in a much longer story, and the length of the story before his part in it was evidence of something that he was still working out the implications of. He wrote in the notebook: Seven years.
The organization exists. The declaration has been made. The bilateral framework with the kingdom is signed. The protocol with the Church is in place. The eighty-five have reached the floor — the search continues as the organization continues. The First Ones' constructions have been found and are being studied. The boundary is maintained. Someone is watching. Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
What they are watching, I believe, is whether what we are building is the kind of thing worth making contact with. I believe it is. The test is building it better, not demonstrating that it already is. Below him, the city was waking in the spring morning. The school lights were on. The forge was beginning. The clinic's first appointments were being received. The civil patrol was on its morning circuit. The press was setting the next broadsheet edition. Eighty-three soldiers still unaccounted.
One hundred and twenty-four confirmed and active or in contact. The work continued. The search continued. The building continued. He looked north, where the Ironfen was different now in ways visible only to someone who had been watching long enough to know what different looked like. The goblin clans in their returning territories. Confluix in its vast domain, monitoring, reporting, thinking its long thoughts and attending monthly council sessions through the heliograph.
The constructions in the interior, maintained by someone who had been there for hundreds of years and was still there and was watching. He thought about Danny's foundational document, which was growing toward completion and which said things that he had been building toward for seven years without knowing he was building toward them. He thought about Aldric's word: argument. He thought about what an argument required. Not force. Not authority.
Evidence, and the patience to let the evidence be seen, and the willingness to be wrong about specific things while remaining committed to the underlying principles, and the building — always the building, the physical demonstration that what you believed was true was demonstrated by whether what you built on that belief actually worked. Seven years of building. The argument was still being made. He went back down to the study and began.
