The first operational test happened on a Thursday morning in March, in the forge complex's eastern expansion that Briggs had been building since January.
Not the public March — this was a controlled test, witnessed only by the people who needed to witness it: Briggs, Patel's civil engineer (whose name here was Edwyn, who had returned to Greyhold for the installation phase as Briggs had requested), Washington who needed to understand the energy output characteristics for the pharmaceutical operation's planning, and Marcus. Danny was there too.
He had asked to be there with the specific directness he brought to requests that he had already decided were appropriate, and Marcus had said yes because Danny's reasons for wanting to be present at significant organizational moments were consistently good reasons even when he didn't explain them.
The device was not large — it was the scale of a first prototype, which meant it was significantly smaller than what the technology would eventually produce but large enough to perform the specific function it had been designed for: driving the mine's drainage pump. The mechanism was Briggs's design, modified by Edwyn's structural analysis and built by Brennan's son Aldric, who had become, over six years in the forge complex, the best ironworker in the territory and possibly in the region.
Briggs ran the startup sequence himself. The preparation took forty minutes. The process was deliberate and methodical and without drama — the valves opened in sequence, the pressure built according to the curve Briggs had calculated, the indicators he had built into the system to monitor the critical parameters moved within the ranges he had specified. There was a period of about three minutes where the system reached its operating condition and stabilized. Then it ran.
The sound was nothing like what Marcus had expected, which was itself information about the degree to which his expectations had been shaped by modern context. He had been expecting something mechanical and industrial, something that sounded like the future it represented. What the steam engine sounded like was: rhythmic, deliberate, not loud — the specific cadence of a piston moving in a cylinder with the regularity of a designed process rather than the irregularity of a natural one.
He stood in the expansion building and listened to it and felt the air move slightly from the working mechanism and looked at Briggs. Briggs was watching the indicators. His face had the quality it had when work reached its correct completion — not excitement, because excitement was for things that were uncertain, and Briggs had been fairly certain this would work. The quality was closer to recognition: the machine doing what he had designed it to do, confirming that the design was correct.
"Pressure holding," Briggs said, to no one specifically.
"Temperature?" Edwyn said.
"Within the specified range," Briggs said.
"The insulation is performing better than the model." He made a note.
"That's useful — it means we have margin in the energy balance I didn't build in."
"What margin?" Washington said. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.
"About eight percent," Briggs said.
"That eight percent is available for the pharmaceutical operation's energy requirement without impacting the mine drainage function." He looked at Washington.
"You've been asking about a steam-driven extraction process for the tier three compounds."
"For six months," Washington said.
"You can have it," Briggs said.
"The margin supports it." Washington made a note. The conversation between Briggs and Edwyn and Washington continued — technical, specific, the conversation of people who understood the system and were already planning its implications. Marcus stood and listened and let his mind range across what the running device meant for the sequence that Briggs had laid out in October. Mine drainage: now possible. The deeper ore sections of the seam above Coppermill were accessible. The iron surplus was buildable.
Mill expansion: the waterwheel installation for the second mill was in planning. The energy question for the forge bellows was addressable with what the steam engine could provide. Textile operation: the equipment design was Briggs's next project after the mine installation was complete. The labor was available in the territory if the equipment was there. Economic independence: twelve months away, by the most conservative estimate.
Possibly eight, if the mine expansion progressed on the accelerated timeline that Edwyn had identified. He thought about Danny's phrase for the next phase: Roots. The thing that made growth possible and durable. Not visible growth — foundation growth, the kind that happened below the surface and that everything afterward depended on. The steam engine was roots. It was not visible from outside the forge complex.
It would not be visible in the territory's life until the mine expanded and the iron surplus appeared and the textile operation began and the economic relationships changed. But it was running, and it would run, and what it ran would change everything downstream.
"Briggs," he said. Briggs looked up.
"How long before the mine installation?" Marcus said.
"The pump mechanism is six weeks," Briggs said.
"The drainage channel infrastructure is Edwyn's work — how long?" Edwyn looked at his notes.
"Eight weeks," he said.
"With the labor allocation we discussed."
"Fourteen weeks," Marcus said.
"Twelve if we push the foundation work," Edwyn said.
"The schedule has margin. Whether it's worth using the margin depends on whether the timeline pressure justifies it."
"It does," Marcus said.
"The Cassian buyers are expecting the surplus announcement. I've been managing expectations for three months. Twelve weeks is better than fourteen."
"Twelve weeks," Edwyn said, with the flat acceptance of a professional adjusting his plan to an operational requirement. Danny, who had been quiet through the technical discussion, said: "The miners. The ones who'll be working the deeper sections." Briggs looked at him.
"We've addressed the ventilation," he said.
"The drainage changes the water situation. The structural reinforcement design is Edwyn's."
"The working conditions," Danny said.
"The shift length. The rest requirements. The pay structure." He paused.
"The deeper sections are going to be harder work in worse conditions. That should be reflected in how we treat the people doing it."
"We haven't designed the labor structure yet," Briggs said.
"Then we design it now," Danny said.
"Before the expansion begins. Not after the miners are already working in conditions we haven't thought through." Marcus looked at Danny and then at Briggs.
"He's right," he said.
"The labor structure is a prerequisite, not a follow-up. Who's the right person to design it?"
"Price," Briggs said.
"Her civil patrol work has given her the best understanding of labor conditions across the territory."
"Price and Vance," Danny said.
"The labor structure needs to have legal standing, not just operational standing. Otherwise it's a policy that can be changed by whoever's running the operation."
"Price and Vance," Marcus confirmed.
"By the time the mine installation is complete. It's a prerequisite for operation." Briggs looked at the running steam engine for a moment, then at Danny, then at Marcus.
"He's going to be running this organization before any of us notice," Briggs said.
"I know," Marcus said.
"I'm right here," Danny said.
