Suddenly, her hand stopped moving. Her green eyes widened in pure shock. She pulled her hand out. A bright, glowing golden ring rested right in her palm. The entire 13th Unit gasped loudly.
"You actually found one!" Laxmi cheered. She jumped into the air with excitement.
"He was right! The pigeon dream was real!" Sayma stared at the ring. She looked totally bewildered.
"This defies all logical probability. You guessed the exact location based on a dream about birds."
"I told you," Ken smiled lazily. He popped his collar with one hand.
"My brain works in mysterious ways. Let us keep moving. The pigeons are calling me." The giant digital scoreboard in the sky flashed brightly. The blue number changed. It updated to three. The score was five to three. High above the arena, the sports anchors went absolutely wild.
"Did you see that, Sarah?!" Bob yelled into his microphone. He waved his hands frantically.
"The 13th Unit just secured their third ring! And it looks like Ken Eliot found it!" Sarah leaned forward in her chair. She watched the replay on her monitor.
"It is incredible, Bob! The analysts were completely wrong about him! He walked straight to that tree and pointed at the birdhouse! He did not even hesitate! He must possess a legendary, undocumented Detection skill!"
"A Detection skill!" Bob shouted loudly.
"That changes the entire match! He can sense the magical artifacts from far away! He is not a slacker! He is a human radar!" Down on the grass, Ken had no idea the commentators were calling him a human radar. He was just complaining about the weather.
"It is entirely too warm out here," Ken whined. He dragged his shoes along the dirt path.
"My suit is absorbing all the sunlight. I need a cold drink. Or maybe a swimming pool. Does this garden have a swimming pool?"
"Keep walking, Ken," Naomi smiled. She patted his back playfully.
"You are on a winning streak. Lead the way." Ken shuffled toward a large, decorative stone fountain in the center of a paved plaza. Clear water sprayed high into the air. The water pooled in a wide, shallow basin. Ken walked right next to the edge of the water. He looked down. He saw the faint golden glow resting at the very bottom of the fountain, hidden perfectly under some decorative rocks. He needed to get the ring. But he could not just reach in and grab it. That would look way too suspicious.
He needed to make it look like a complete, clumsy accident. Ken intentionally crossed his left foot right behind his right foot. He threw his arms wildly into the air. He let out a loud, comical yelp. Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.
"Whoops!" Ken yelled. He stumbled forward. He lost his balance completely. He did a dramatic, flailing dive straight into the stone fountain. SPLASH! Water flew everywhere. Ken landed face-first in the shallow basin. His tailored navy blue suit was instantly soaked. His white shirt stuck to his skin. He sat up in the water. He wiped his wet black hair out of his eyes. He coughed loudly.
"Ken!" Princess Iris called out. She ran toward the fountain.
"Are you okay?"
"I am entirely soaked," Ken complained miserably. He sat in the cold water. He looked at his ruined suit.
"This is a total disaster. My dry cleaning bill is going to be massive. I am filing a formal grievance against this fountain." Elma rushed over. The blonde servant wore her spotless white and gold uniform. She looked very concerned. Her cheeks turned a bright, vibrant shade of pink. She reached her hand out to help him up.
"You are so clumsy," Elma stammered. Her voice pitched up slightly.
"Why do you not look where you are walking? Give me your hand." Ken reached up to take her hand. But as he lifted his arm out of the water, something sparkled brightly in his grasp. He held a glowing golden ring.
"Oh, look," Ken said casually. He shook the water off the ring.
"I found another one. It was resting right under my knee. This fountain is very generous." Naomi stared at him. She burst out laughing. She could not hold it in. She covered her mouth with her hands. Her shoulders shook with pure amusement.
"You fell into a fountain and found a ring," Naomi laughed.
"You are the most ridiculous person in the world, Ken."
"I am a master of aquatic exploration," Ken corrected her. He climbed out of the fountain. His cheap shoes squished with water. Squelch. Squelch.
"But I am very cold now. We need to finish this game fast. I want a warm towel." The scoreboard flashed again. The blue number changed to four. The score was five to four. The 13th Unit was catching up fast. The momentum had completely shifted. They followed the dripping wet boy deeper into the artificial forest, trusting his bizarre, totally unexplainable luck to lead them straight to victory.
Ken squished his way down the dirt path. Water dripped steadily from his sleeves. He left a trail of wet footprints on the gray stones. He shivered dramatically.
"I feel like a wet dog," Ken whined. He hugged his arms tightly across his chest.
"A very sad, very tired wet dog. Can we speed this up? I am catching a cold. I will definitely need a large bowl of chicken soup for dinner tonight."
"Stop complaining," Laxmi grinned. She walked right next to him. She tossed a small fireball into the air. The heat from her fire magic warmed the air around him.
"I am drying you off. Just keep using your weird pigeon dreams to find the rings."
"They are not just dreams, Laxmi. They are highly tactical visions," Ken joked lazily. He looked around the large garden. He already knew exactly where the next two rings were hidden. He just needed to create a funny excuse to point them out. He stopped in front of a weirdly shaped, large gray rock. The rock sat next to a blooming rose bush. Ken pointed his finger at the rock. He put on a very serious, goofy expression.
"Zinia," Ken announced loudly.
"I have a very strong feeling about that rock. It looks very suspicious to me. It looks like it is hiding a big secret." Zinia cracked her knuckles. The strong earth mage smiled a confident smile.
"You think a rock is suspicious? That is a very strange observation, Ken. But your track record is flawless today. I will check it." Zinia walked over to the large gray rock. She placed her hands under the edge. She lifted the massive stone effortlessly. She tossed it aside like a toy. Resting in the dark dirt underneath the rock was a glowing golden ring.
"I do not believe it," Sayma whispered. She pushed her thick glasses up. She quickly wrote a note in her book.
"He did it again. He just stared at a rock and knew."
"I have an excellent eye for suspicious landscaping," Ken bragged proudly. He popped his collar. It was still wet, so it flopped back down instantly.
"I am basically a professional gardener now." The giant scoreboard in the sky flashed brightly. Five to five. The game was officially tied.
