Naomi chuckled softly.
"Just sit still. We need to win this case." Laxmi bounced her leg up and down. The fire user hated sitting still. She wanted to punch the bad guys. Zinia patted Laxmi's shoulder to calm her down. Ira stood perfectly still near the wall. Her face was totally blank. Luna was fast asleep on a nearby bench. Risa held her teddy bear tightly. The sweet healer looked very nervous. A few rows behind the 13th Unit, someone else sat in the public gallery. It was Elma.
The blonde servant from the 16th Unit wore her spotless white and gold uniform. Princess Hestia gave her a short break. Elma decided to come to the courtroom. She held a small, hidden bag of lemon drops in her lap. She wanted to give them to Ken later. Elma looked at Ken's messy hair. Her cheeks instantly turned a bright, vibrant shade of pink. She quickly looked away. She stared very hard at the ceiling. She tried to hide her blush. Today, there will be a hearing in the Carrion murder case against Dr.
Raven, and the day after tomorrow there will be a hearing in the Police Chief murder case. The Head Judge hit his wooden gavel on the desk. Thwack. Thwack.
"The Imperial Court is now in session," the Head Judge announced. His voice echoed across the massive room.
"We are here to review the charges against Dr. Raven. The 13th Unit accuses him of treason and murder." Dr. Raven's lead lawyer stood up. He buttoned his expensive jacket. He walked to the center of the room. He smiled a very fake, deceptive smile. He looked at the judges.
"Your Honors," the lawyer said smoothly.
"These charges are completely ridiculous. Dr. Raven is a respected official. He serves the Belmontia Empire perfectly. The 13th Unit is just making up stories. They want to score political points in the Succession War. They have absolutely no real proof." Sayma frowned. She clicked her pen.
"He is lying," Sayma whispered to Iris. The lawyer continued his speech. He walked back and forth. He used big words. He waved his hands in the air.
"They claim Dr. Carrion was murdered. But the police report is very clear. Dr. Carrion caused a chemical accident in his own laboratory. He made a mistake. The explosion was an accident. My client had absolutely nothing to do with it." Laxmi gritted her teeth.
"I really want to set his expensive shoes on fire," she whispered. Zinia smiled a tough smile.
"Wait for our turn, Laxmi." The lawyer pointed a finger at Princess Iris.
"The 13th Princess relies on the word of a crazy gardener and a mutated street thug. That is not evidence. That is pure fiction. We demand that all charges be dropped immediately." Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. The lawyer sat back down. He looked very smug. Dr. Raven smirked. The corrupt politician thought he had already won the trial. The Head Judge looked at Princess Iris.
"Princess Iris Belmontia. Do you have a witness to counter this defense?" Princess Iris nodded gracefully. She stood up. Her posture was completely flawless.
"Yes, Your Honor. I call my servant, Ken Eliot, to the witness stand. He was present during the entire investigation. He personally spoke to the suspects." The Head Judge looked at his list.
"Ken Eliot. Please approach the witness stand." Ken let out a massive, dramatic groan. He threw his head back. He looked at the ceiling.
"Do I really have to walk all the way over there?" Ken complained loudly.
"The witness stand is on the other side of the room. That is a massive amount of unnecessary cardio. My legs are officially on strike today." Naomi laughed quietly. She grabbed his arm and pulled him up.
"Go, slacker. Do your job. I will buy you a snack later."
"You promised," Ken said. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets. Ken walked slowly to the front of the room. He dragged his cheap shoes on the smooth marble floor. Scuff. Scuff. Scuff. He slouched his shoulders as far as they could possibly go. His untucked shirt flapped loosely behind him. His tie was totally sideways. The elite nobles in the public gallery gasped loudly. They covered their mouths. They could not believe a servant looked so incredibly messy in the Imperial Court.
It was a massive insult to their strict rules. The three judges frowned deeply. They looked very annoyed.
"Mr. Eliot," the Head Judge scolded. His voice was stern.
"Tuck your shirt in. Fix your tie. Show some respect for this courtroom." Ken stopped walking. He looked down at his shirt. He gave the judges a goofy, completely relaxed smile.
"My shirt is perfectly fine, Your Honor," Ken replied cheerfully.
"It is called maximum airflow. If I tuck it in, I will get too warm. And if I get too warm, I will definitely fall asleep. You do not want a sleeping witness, right? That would be very bad for the trial." The Head Judge stared at him. The judge's face turned slightly red. He hit his gavel on the desk.
"Just sit down in the chair, Mr. Eliot!" Ken walked up the small wooden steps to the witness box. He sat down in the wooden chair. He immediately shifted his weight. He leaned far back. He crossed one foot over his other knee. He looked completely unbothered by the intense atmosphere.
"This chair is terribly uncomfortable," Ken complained out loud. He rubbed his lower back.
"You guys really need to buy some cushions. I feel like I am sitting on a pile of rocks. This is a very hostile workplace environment." Dr. Raven sneered in absolute disgust. He looked at his lead lawyer. The lawyer nodded confidently. The lawyer stood up and walked toward the witness box. He intended to completely destroy this lazy boy.
"Mr. Eliot," the lawyer began smoothly. He adjusted his expensive silk tie.
"You claim that Dr. Carrion was murdered. But you have no degree in magic. You have no degree in science. You are just a simple, uneducated servant. Why should anyone believe your crazy theory?" Ken let out a long, loud yawn. He covered his mouth with his hand. He stretched his jaw completely open.
"Excuse me," Ken said lazily.
"Your voice is very boring. It makes me sleepy." The lawyer stopped walking. His confident smile vanished. His eye twitched with pure irritation.
"Answer the question, Mr. Eliot!"
"Okay, okay," Ken said. He slouched even lower in the uncomfortable chair.
"You say Dr. Carrion blew himself up by accident. That is incredibly stupid." The lawyer gasped.
"Objection! He is using insulting language!"
"I am using logical language," Ken corrected him smoothly. He rested his chin on his hand. He looked at the lawyer with sleepy, half-closed eyes.
"Dr. Carrion was a genius. He built a secret, completely secure laboratory. Geniuses do not accidentally mix explosive radiation materials and blow up their own secure rooms. That is terrible math. They only blow things up on purpose. Or, someone else blows them up to steal their blueprints."
