Chương 7: Synergy

The snares had worked. This was not a given. He'd set them at dusk the previous evening using a vine-and-sapling system he'd reasoned out from first principles — trigger loop, tension line, anchor point — and then had spent approximately forty percent of the night convinced he'd gotten the geometry wrong and would find them empty and sprung in the morning, which would mean he'd wasted good vine on a theory and would have to go back to active hunting. He'd gotten the geometry right.
Two rabbits, caught clean, dead before he'd reached them. He crouched over the first snare and felt something that took him a second to identify because it had been absent long enough that he'd stopped expecting it: satisfaction. Not excitement. Not relief — he knew relief now, had it catalogued precisely as the thing that fired when a meter stopped falling or a wolf stayed in its quadrant. This was different. Quieter.
The satisfaction of a system that had been designed correctly producing the result it was designed to produce. He reset both snares for tonight. Then he processed the rabbits with the stone axe, which did the job in a way that worked, oh it was functional, but slower than it should be, and left him aware the whole time that there was a better tool for this and he just didn't have it yet. Yet being the operative word. He felt like the only edge he had on this place was his absolte stubbornness. He'd take it.
He saved both pelts, working them loose with more care than yesterday's attempt, because something in the back of his mind had filed leather, future application and he'd stopped dismissing notes from the back of his mind since they'd started being right. 【Material Acquired 】 Raw Hare Pelt x2 (Common) Current state: Uncured Potential applications: Basic insulation, container lining, primitive wrap Processing required before use: Curing or smoke-treatment The Watchers note you're thinking ahead.
They find this mildly threatening. He had two rabbits. Yesterday he'd have cooked them the way he'd been cooking everything — meat, fire, done — and called it a meal. The meters would have moved in the right direction and that would have been the metric. He did not cook them immediately. He went foraging first.
Specifically — he went to the patch of disturbed ground near the eastern thorn-trees where he'd found the pale mushrooms two days ago, the ones the Nexus had tagged Palegrove Mushroom (Common — further analysis recommended) without committing to edibility. He'd been leaving them alone on the basis that further analysis recommended was Nexus for we don't want to be blamed for this, but yesterday he'd noticed something: the mushrooms grew in clusters at the base of the same root systems as the Ironroot.
Same soil disturbance, same moisture conditions. Plants that grew together in the same environment tended, on Earth, to either complement each other or have developed similar properties. He had a Perception of 6. 2 and a hypothesis. He brought three mushrooms back and sat with them at the fire, holding each one in the heat-adjacent light where the coloration was clearest. Pale, firm-capped, no visible discoloration or slick surface.
He held one over the steam from water he sprinkled onto a flat stone laid across the fire, one that he had decided was going to be a makeshift cooktop— and watched the cap change color slightly in the steam. The color shift went from pale cream toward a golden yellow. The Nexus, apparently, had been waiting for him to get to this.
【Botanical Analysis — Updated 】 Palegrove Mushroom (Common) — EDIBLE CONFIRMED Flavor profile: Mild, earthy, absorbs cooking medium *Nutritional value: Moderate (superior to Ironroot) Synergy detected: Pairs with Crimson Wilds Herb and protein-rich meat Perception +0. 1 (independent field analysis under pressure) The Watchers note you ran an experiment. The bar continues to rise. Synergy detected. He read that twice.
Then he pulled up his ingredient list and looked at it the way he used to look at a dataset that had just produced an unexpected correlation — not with excitement, because excitement was premature before verification, but with the alert stillness of someone who understood they might be looking at something real. Palegrove mushroom. Crimson Wilds herb. Rabbit meat. He'd been using one of those three in isolation.
The Nexus was suggesting all three were talking to each other in ways that produced something greater than the individual components. He wrapped the first rabbit — both pieces, meat and the bone-stripped secondary — in the broad herb leaves, pressed mushroom slices against the surface, and folded the whole assembly into a tight packet using a large water-catching leaf he'd identified last week as structurally useful. The bundle went into the coals at the fire's edge, not on the direct flame. Slow heat.
Even distribution. The smell changed within ten minutes. Not something is cooking — he knew that smell. This was different. Layered. The herb was releasing something it didn't release when cooked alone, and the mushroom was doing something to the meat's surface that the plain roast never achieved, and the result drifting upward from the coals was the first genuinely appetizing thing he'd encountered in four days. This novel is published on a different platform.
Support the original author by finding the official source. He had to wait another twenty minutes. He spent them building the fourth shelter wall from the timber he'd been gathering, because standing over the fire watching it would not make it cook faster and he had things to do." Leave it alone" His mother had taught him that when she first taught him how to cook. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just leave it the hell alone and let it do it's thing.
He thought of his life back in California and briefly wondered what she was doing, hopefully she wasn't pulled into this place, he doubted the criteria would be genetic. The wall went up faster than the first three — the skill was accumulating in his hands without formal announcement, notches cleaner, lashing tighter.
【Skill Progress 】 Base-Building (Novice) — advancement logged Construction efficiency improved marginally. Structural coherence of current shelter: Adequate. The Watchers observe you filling gaps. Literally and otherwise. When the packet's outer leaf had gone from green to a deep crackling brown at the edges, he pulled it from the coals with two sticks and set it on a flat stone to rest. He waited another five minutes, because he'd learned that lesson with the Ironroot, and then he opened it.
The steam came out in a column. The meat inside was the color he recognized from properly cooked things, from restaurants and kitchens and his mother's table on Sundays, the color that meant done, and it had pulled away from the bone in a way that the plain roast never quite managed. The mushrooms had collapsed into a layer against the meat's surface, and the herb had done something to the exterior that the word seared wanted to apply to even though he'd used coals, not flame.
He ate a piece before the Nexus notification arrived, because he was done letting blue boxes tell him what his own mouth was doing. It was good. Not adequate. Not marginally preferable to not eating. Good, as in a word he would have used in a real-world context with real-world standards attached.
He chewed slowly and his brain, which had been operating in crisis-management mode for four days, did something he hadn't felt it do since Sacramento: it stopped running threat calculations for approximately thirty seconds and simply registered the meal. The Nexus, with characteristic timing, chose this moment to weigh in.
【Recipe Unlocked 】 Herb-Wrapped Roast — Apprentice (Upgraded via independent ingredient discovery) Hunger Restoration: +65% Stamina Regen: +12% for 45 minutes post-meal Nutrition bonus: Hunger decay rate −11% for 6 hours Your body recognizes real nutrition. Note the difference. The Watchers did not expect this particular development today. They are re-evaluating the entertainment schedule. Perception +0. 1 appeared a beat later, quieter, like an afterthought. 【Attribute Gain 】 Perception: 6. 2 → 6.
3 (independent field analysis — botanical synergy identification) He kept eating. He felt like maybe feasting could be appropriate but didn't want to get that bold. Hunger climbed through 70%, 80%, past the threshold where the number stopped being urgent and became simply a measure.
It hit 94% as he finished the packet and folded the empty leaf wrapper across his knee, and he sat with it in his hands while the Stamina Regen bonus settled into his system — a warmth that didn't come from the fire, a steadiness in his limbs that the meters didn't have language for but his body recognized.
"Holy shit. I made a good meal in a forest that wants to kill me," he said. His voice came out quieter than intended.
"My Michelin star is pending. The wolves are not invited." The clearing held the comment without returning anything. The fire crackled. The Anchor Stone pulsed its four-second clock.
Two dead rabbits had become a meal that the Nexus categorized as substantively different from everything he'd eaten since arriving here, and he was sitting alone in the Crimson Wilds with an empty leaf wrapper in his hands thinking about how on a different Tuesday he would have sent a text — made something genuinely good tonight, no idea how — and someone would have responded with something, anything, even just an emoji, and the moment would have existed in the shared space between two people instead of dissolving into the blood-red canopy above him.
He wanted to tell someone it was good.
"I told the fire," he said.
"The fire didn't respond. Which is more than my last girlfriend responded. So, progress." He opened the Ring Channel. Read for five minutes. [GoodSamaritanX] had been quiet since the MarcoB incident — sixteen hours of silence now, longer than any previous gap. [KaiS] had posted a dry observation about snare geometry that was, Finn noted, technically correct and suggested field experience. A cluster of newer players were sharing foraging finds with varying degrees of accuracy.
One of them had apparently eaten the Bloodthorn Berry, which the Nexus had flagged as Toxicity Suspected on day one, and was posting about it in terms that suggested the Nexus had been, if anything, conservative. He did not post. He thought about posting the recipe, but maybe the mushrooms were only in his area. He didn't want to give away his position. Not yet. The second rabbit was for tomorrow.
He wrapped it in broad leaves and set it in the coolest corner of the shelter, which wasn't refrigeration but was better than leaving it out. He banked the fire with the attention of a man who had now done this enough times that the motions were automatic — the right wood, the right arrangement, the ash layer that would hold the coals through the night. His Fatigue meter sat at 34%, which was the lowest it had been since arrival.
The nutrition bonus was already visible in the slower bleed rate, the system acknowledging that a body properly fed operates differently than a body running on minimal calories and determination. He noticed this the way he noticed all the meter movements — as data, as confirmation that the variables he was adjusting were producing the predicted outcomes. He noticed the other thing too. The thing that wasn't data.
He let himself notice it for exactly as long as it took to bank the fire and settle into the shelter, and then he put it away, because the forest didn't care about the weight of eating well alone, and the meters didn't either, and he had work to do tomorrow that required him functional rather than dwelling. The fourth shelter wall was up. The snares were set. The Anchor Stone pulsed at his back. The meal sat warm and real in his system in a way that plain roasted roots had never managed.
He didn't know yet how long it would be before a meal felt like enough. Tonight it did. He closed his eyes while the forest ran its nighttime register around him, and for the first time since Sacramento, he wasn't waiting for something to go wrong.
