Chương 45: You wont get there without us. ;)

The circuit ran itself. This was not complacency, it was a system that had been tuned correctly, where the operator could give it appropriate attention rather than desperate attention, where the difference between a good day and a great day was measured in tens of XP rather than the binary of survived versus didn't. He extracted ore, ran the game trail convergence, covered the biome-edge scan, came back with materials and meat and the Wanderer bonus applied to all of it.
Eighty days ago the variable had been lived or died. The upgrade in operational precision was, he allowed himself to acknowledge, significant. Daily total: 441. He wrote it on the bark-sheet with the same weight he gave all the numbers, which was appropriate weight rather than drama. The Level 10 bar was at 1, 181/18, 000. Seventeen days at current rate, possibly fourteen if the cave exploration delivered decent exploration XP.
He made dinner, ate at the shelter entrance with the fire at his back, and opened the Ring Channel. [CrimsonEdge] had been in the flagged column for two weeks. The posting pattern had the same coordinate-extraction tells as every other PK network account he'd catalogued across eighty days, but with an edge the professional accounts had learned to sand off. The slightly elevated aggression of someone bored with the patient version of the job. He'd been watching it accumulate.
Tonight, in response to a low-signal question from a new account asking about player settlements, it made the kind of error that impatient people make when the answer feels like an opportunity to sound threatening. [CrimsonEdge]: Haven's Reach exists, been there, it's real, but you won't get there without us;) His stomach soured.
"The winky face," he said, to the fire and the channel and the general universe.
"Really committing to the brand." He kept looking at the post.
"Also, thank you. Genuinely. I've been building a threat model for the approach corridor for three weeks and you just saved me a lot of inference work." He pulled the bark-sheet out. The destination had been real for a while. What [CrimsonEdge] had just confirmed wasn't Haven's Reach, it was the operation.
You won't get there without us wasn't a bluff, it was an advertisement: a PK network cell that had been running active interdiction on the approach corridor long enough to be comfortable announcing it to strangers. They weren't opportunistic. They were positioned. Waiting. Running the northern road as a supply chain the way toll collectors ran bridges, except the toll was everything you had and the collectors weren't offering change. He updated the threat model column.
【Threat Model — Approach Corridor Updated】 [CrimsonEdge] self-report: 'been there' — confirmed active cell presence on Haven's Reach approach Assessment: Organized interdiction, not opportunistic ambush. Cell comfortable enough to advertise position. Implication: Fighting through is not the optimal strategy. Fighting through may not be possible solo.
Route revision required: stealth and marker identification elevated from secondary to primary The Watchers note he has confirmed the existence of an organized PK ambush operation on his planned route, sourced from the ambush operation's own recruitment pitch. They note the winky face has contributed more to his threat model than three weeks of channel analysis. They are choosing not to comment on what this says about the three weeks. Love this story?

He wrote two lines in the prerequisites column under Route Intelligence and did not spend time on the feeling of the threat model updating in the wrong direction. The data was the data. The plan was adjustable. The plan was going to need adjusting. He kept reading. [LiraT] posted at 1831. [LiraT]: seeing what I think are legitimate HR scout markers on the eastern trail. [LiraT]: different from the other network.
consistent with official signage description. [LiraT]: will post more if I can verify. treat as unconfirmed for now. He sat with that for a moment.
"Of course," he said, to no one. Not annoyed. She'd done the work he hadn't. She was out there, moving through the same environment, posting route intelligence for strangers who needed it, finding the counter to the exact problem [CrimsonEdge] had just confirmed. The eastern trail. Legitimate markers. A different network running the road the way a road was supposed to be run. He read the post again.
The hedge was correct, the same epistemically honest framing she applied to everything: what I think, treat as unconfirmed. Her track record across eighty days translated that as: she'd seen the markers. She wasn't certain. She was going to verify. When she verified, she would post. He added a line to the bark-sheet: Scout marker identification. Eastern trail variant. Source: [LiraT], Day 80.
【Route Intelligence — Updated】 Scout markers reported: eastern trail (LiraT, Day 80 — unconfirmed, high-reliability source) Assessment: Two versions of the northern road now in evidence. PK interdiction confirmed (CrimsonEdge). Legitimate scout corridor probable (LiraT).
Navigation priority: identify and track legitimate marker system before committing to route The Watchers note he now has a threat and a potential counter to the threat, both sourced from the same channel, on the same evening, from people with very different ideas about what the road is for. They note [LiraT] posted her findings within the hour. They note Finn has read her post four times and has still not replied. They note this is the eighty-second consecutive day of not replying.
They are updating the count with the enthusiasm of people who have a lot of time. He closed the channel, trying to ignore the watchers. Not entirely succeeding, but making the attempt. The Level 10 allocation plan was open on the bark-sheet from three days ago: combat primaries, Strength and Vitality, enough HP and damage output to fight through whatever the PK network sent at him on the approach. The reasoning had been sound when he'd written it. The reasoning was now behind the new data.
Fighting through was not the answer. [CrimsonEdge]'s post had been clear enough: a cell that comfortable with the corridor wasn't going to be surprised by a solo player with good combat stats. They had numbers, position, and the patience of people running an established operation. Strength and Vitality were the right allocation for a fight he could expect to win. They were not the right allocation for a fight he should be trying to avoid. He drew a line through the old plan.
Agility for movement speed and approach angles. Perception for reading terrain, identifying markers, tracking the gap between PK patrol windows that the channel data suggested existed. The Wanderer Path was built on not being found, and the road to Haven's Reach was a stealth problem before it was anything else. He'd spent eighty days building exactly the instrument the approach corridor required. The correct answer was to use it. Intellect got one point.
The locked recipe had been sitting in the crafting tree's preview since Level 7 with its threshold unmet, and one point was not going to close the full gap, but one point was a data point and the locked recipe was still the most interesting item in his Nexus tree and he was going to get there eventually. He rewrote the allocation column.
【Level 10 Allocation — Revised】 Previous plan: Combat primaries (Strength +2, Vitality +2, Willpower +1) Revised plan: Navigation primaries (Agility +2, Perception +2, Intellect +1) Rationale: Approach corridor = stealth and routing problem. Combat stats adequate for likely engagement. Intellect +1: locked recipe threshold progress. The Watchers observe Intellect receiving one point. One. Out of five. They note the locked recipe has been locked since Level 7 and will remain locked after this allocation.
They note he has now allocated nine points across three levels without once asking what it would actually take to open the recipe. They note this is, technically, a data gap in someone who describes himself as analytical. They find the gap's persistence interesting in a way they are not going to explain. He updated the prerequisites column with the revised allocation, added the scout marker identification task, and closed the bark-sheet.
The bark-sheet had a section at the bottom that said HAVEN'S REACH in letters he'd pressed harder than necessary. It had the destination confirmation and the threat model and the route intelligence and the prerequisites list and now the allocation revision. It also had, at the bottom margin, a line that had been there since Day 75: Not scared of this. He looked at it.
"Still accurate," he said, to the shelter and the fire and the northern direction. Then, after a moment: "Ask me again after the approach corridor."
