The lean-to had served its purpose. He stood outside it on the morning of Day 25 and looked at it with the critical eye of a man who had been living in a thing and was now looking at the thing rather than through it. Four walls, one of which was the Anchor Stone's base. A roof that had performed adequately in two rain events and had a drip problem in the northwest corner that he'd patched three times with diminishing returns. A thorn perimeter that worked.
A floor that was compacted dirt and root systems and the particular variety of cold that came from ground contact all night regardless of how much Fatigue recovery the shelter's stats were providing. He thought about the threat level he currently understood the forest to contain. Level 8 wolves. A Level 14 Forest Boar. Something that had made the slash marks, whose upper range he still hadn't fully classified.
The plateau math that meant he was going to be here, in this territory, for another fourteen to eighteen days minimum before Level 6 moved him into a different capability tier. He looked at the lean-to again.
"No," he said, and pulled out the bark-sheet to start the site survey. 【Construction Project Initiated】 Assessment: Current shelter — functional, suboptimal Project: Reinforced Pit Shelter (planned duration: 3 days) Site requirements: Natural windbreak, drainage slope, concealment from primary wolf corridor Materials: On-site (ironwood timber, stone, vine, broad-leaf) The Watchers observe you initiating a multi-day building project. They adjust their entertainment schedule accordingly. They have learned to do this.
The site selection took two hours and was the most important two hours of the project. He'd learned this from the lean-to, which he'd built in the first available location rather than the best available location, and which had therefore required retrofitting every time the environment demonstrated a preference for his original decisions to be wrong. Two hours of walking in circles looking at rocks and drainage angles and wolf patrol corridors before touching a single piece of timber.
On Day 4 he would have considered this an inexcusable delay. On Day 25 he considered it the reason the lean-to had a drip problem and the new shelter would not. Site selection before the first swing of the hatchet. Always.
He found it on the second full circuit of his mapped territory: a curved section of the rock face on the western edge, convex in the north-facing direction, which meant it naturally deflected the prevailing wind that came from the northwest and also provided a hard structural surface on one side that no amount of timber-framing could match for integrity. The ground in front of it sloped southeast at exactly the gradient that sent drainage away from the shelter footprint rather than through it.
And the wolf's established northwest patrol corridor ran between two reference points that put this site firmly in the quieter southeastern quadrant — visible from the patrol route only if you knew exactly where to look and approached at the right angle, which wolves presumably did not do on the basis of architectural preference. He staked the footprint. Then he started digging.

"This one just has dirt in it." The digging was the part the documentaries didn't cover, which was consistent with his experience of everything the documentaries had implied would be straightforward. The top layer of soil came up without much argument — damp, fibrous, the root mat breaking away from the stone hatchet's improvised pickaxe application in satisfying chunks. He worked through it by switching between the chopping motion that broke the surface and the leveraging motion that lifted the broken sections out, developing a rhythm that his body settled into after the first forty minutes in the way that repetitive physical work developed its own rhythm separate from conscious intention. He'd done this without a precisely defined application in mind, operating on the general principle that straight dry timber was a resource worth accumulating in a world where the uses for straight dry timber were reliably greater than the supply. Now he had the application.
The wall posts went in first — eight of them, driven into the pit's perimeter at even intervals with the stone hatchet serving as a mallet, the base of each post seated against the clay layer that had been such an obstacle yesterday and was now doing useful work as an anchor medium.
His knot work had gotten genuinely good somewhere over the past three weeks — he noticed this in the absence of hesitation, his fingers finding the vine sequence without the conscious direction that had been required when everything was new. The diagonal brace on the east wall required twenty minutes of staring at the geometry problem before the solution became obvious.
"The solution is always obvious after twenty minutes," he told himself, implementing it.
"The twenty minutes is the price of obvious." Two wall sections failed — the northwest corner where he'd miscalculated the post spacing relative to the rock face integration, and the south wall's lashing where the vine tension had been applied in the wrong sequence and produced a structure that flexed when it should have held.
He rebuilt both without annotating the failure beyond a brief note in his mental construction log, because the rebuild was the work and the failure was just the cost of getting to the rebuild. The roof was the Day 3 problem, and he'd known it was the Day 3 problem since he'd started the site survey, which was why he'd been mentally circling it for two days while his hands worked on the parts he understood better.
The fundamental engineering challenge was load distribution across a span that had no center post — he'd deliberately designed the interior without a center post because a center post was an obstacle in a space already compact, and the rock face provided the northern anchor, but the southern span needed to carry its own weight and the weight of whatever weather landed on it without the compression load path that a post would provide.
He solved it with a doubled-ridge system: two parallel beams running east-west at the roof's peak, spaced to distribute the load across both the north rock face and the south wall's top rail simultaneously, the lateral bracing between them triangulated rather than squared. It was the kind of structural insight that arrived not from engineering knowledge — he did not have engineering knowledge — but from looking at the problem long enough that the physics of it became visible. The first time apparently didn't meet your standards. The second time apparently didn't meet your standards.
The third time met your standards. The Watchers are trying to decide if this is admirable or exhausting. They have decided it is both. It is a very good hole with a roof. The Watchers find this more honest than most progression. They also find it more difficult to interrupt than most progression. Single impressive acts have gaps. Accumulated intent does not. Fortification Sense: active. The next build will be faster. The Watchers are aware of what that means. The projection has been updated. The projection remains a problem. The Fortification Sense passive turned on automatically and immediately identified three things he'd built incorrectly in the shelter he'd just finished.
He fixed all three before he cooked dinner, because finding out your construction has weaknesses and then not addressing them was a category of negligence he was unwilling to accept from himself.
"Fortification Sense shows me every weakness in my own construction," he said, working the third fix — a crossbeam joint on the northeast corner that had been lashed at the wrong angle and would eventually torque under sustained load.
"I found three immediately. This is either very useful or the system's way of telling me my workmanship is only technically adequate. Possibly both."
He built a small cooking fire in the center of the pit floor, the smoke finding the vent gap he'd designed into the roof peak — not perfectly, there was some back-draft in the first ten minutes before the thermal draft established itself, but then the smoke went up and out and the fire stayed down and the shelter held the warmth against its walls in a way the lean-to had never managed. He cooked the Herb-Wrapped Roast.
He ate it inside the shelter he'd built, listening to the rain that had resumed, watching the broad-leaf roof perform its designed function.
"I built a house," he said.
"It has four walls, a roof that mostly works, and a floor made of creek stones I carried one armful at a time. The Nexus called it Common. The forest called it an obstacle it can't easily get through. I prefer the forest's assessment." The Fatigue meter was responding to the new shelter already — the passive drain rate visibly slower in the forty minutes he'd been inside, the difference between adequate shelter and good shelter quantified in decimal fractions per hour that would compound across the weeks ahead.
Outside: rain on the Crimson Wilds, the canopy taking the first impact and the undergrowth catching the rest, the forest doing its nighttime register in wet-weather mode. Inside: fire, warmth, the smell of cooked food and wood smoke and something that was starting to approximate the feeling of a place rather than a position. He'd been building shelter in this forest for twenty-three days. All of it had been functional. None of it until tonight had been, without qualification, good.
He ate the last of the rabbit and looked at the walls and the roof and the creek-stone floor and the smoke finding its way out through the gap he'd designed for it, and felt the quiet satisfaction of a thing correctly done. Tomorrow: the tannin investigation. He'd written must not defer again on the bark-sheet and he meant it. Tonight, for the first time since Sacramento, he wasn't cold while it rained.
