The camp was finished. He'd been adding to it incrementally since Day 89 and he knew, standing in the shelter entrance on the morning of Day 114 with his Fortification Sense passive returning zero weaknesses and his resource circuit running at 440+ XP per day and his materials cache at its highest-ever level, that there was nothing left to optimize. The camp was done. The camp was a solved problem.
He had one unsolved problem, which was the road north, and soon he would hit Level 10 made his stats what they were going to be when he walked it. So today was for the road. The greave components had been staged on the cliffside's work surface for two weeks, copper panels he'd pressure-formed during the second smelting session, set aside in the shapes he'd calculated for the leg profile rather than the torso profile, waiting for the priority to shift.
He was aware, pulling them out of storage, that he had spent fifteen weeks becoming someone who pre-staged copper panels against future production requirements. The data analyst from Sacramento had thoughts about this. He didn't consult them. He worked through the morning. The copper panel shaping was familiar now, the hammerstone technique at the correct angle, controlled pressure-forming rather than percussive knapping, the material doing what copper did when you understood what copper wanted to do.
The inner leather padding came from the Thorn-Serpent pelt he'd been holding in the cache since Day 83's hunt with exactly this application in mind, dense, flexible, the chemical properties of serpent hide providing a natural grip against the copper's interior surface that had struck him as useful when he'd processed the skin and turned out to be correct. The bone articulation at the knee joint was the engineering problem.
He needed the greave to move with the leg — a locked panel that restricted the knee bend would be worse than no armor at all for the terrain navigation the northern route required. He worked through two failed articulation configurations before the third produced the range of motion he needed: a stacked bone-disc pivot at the kneecap's position, the copper panels split into upper and lower sections that could flex independently.
【Crafting Success】 Copper-Plate Greaves (Common — Leg Armor) Leg damage reduction: 18% Speed penalty: −4% at full exertion (manageable at Agility 17. 9) Durability: 72/72 Coverage: Upper leg, knee (articulated), lower leg Full armor set: complete. The Watchers observe he has been building toward this for forty-one days and has now achieved it and is currently sitting in his shelter. They note the Crimson Wilds has not seen what he's built.
They note the Crimson Wilds has opinions about him based on data that is now significantly out of date. They would like to suggest, purely in the interest of accuracy, that someone should go correct the record. They are not going to specify who. He tested them with a circuit run at combat pace, not patrol speed but the full-exertion movement he'd need if something went wrong on the northern road and the plan became improvisation.
The speed penalty was real and within the tolerance he'd calculated: noticeable at full sprint, negligible at patrol pace, nonexistent at Cautious Movement. He ran the perimeter of the shelf and back twice. The greaves held. The knee articulation moved correctly. He'd built functional leg armor on the first attempt, which was either evidence of genuine skill progression or a sign that the universe was saving something unpleasant for later, and he chose not to examine which. He sat down and did the full kit review.
He laid it all out on the flat rock the way he'd laid out the gear inventory on Day 86 and stood back and looked at it — fifteen weeks of incremental production spread across two square meters of basalt. The chest piece anchored the left end, Uncommon, which he still noticed every time the Nexus confirmed it because Uncommon meant the gap between what the forest threw at him and what he looked like afterward had gotten meaningfully smaller.
Greaves this morning, Common but functional, the articulated knee joint the thing he was most satisfied with. The shoulder wrap beside them, wolf-leather, still holding. The hatchet, copper-reinforced, the primary weapon that had stopped feeling like a weapon he'd built and started feeling like a weapon he carried, which was a different thing.
The ivory long-knife next — the item he was proudest of, not because it was the best in the kit but because it had required him to completely rethink how a blade was supposed to work. The two spears last, for the ranges and angles the close weapons couldn't reach. He put it all on. He stood in the shelter entrance in the full kit and looked out over the territory below the cliffside. The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"Okay," he said, to the armor and the mirror he didn't have.
"So this is what this feels like." He stood in the shelter entrance in the full kit — copper plate, greaves, bracers, the whole set — and tried to get an honest read on it.
"I feel like I should be doing something dramatic right now. Surveying my domain. Making a speech." He looked at the rust-bark forest.
"I'm not going to do that. But I understand the impulse." He moved both arms. Rotated. Did a half-crouch to test the knee articulation.
"I also look like I made all of this myself, which I did, which is either impressive or deeply concerning depending on which version of me you're asking." He stood up. Rolled his shoulders. The armor settled correctly.
"Okay. That part's not ridiculous." He looked at the forest.
"That part's actually pretty good." 【Full Combat Kit Assessment】 Torso protection: 38% (Uncommon) Leg protection: 18% (Common) Shoulder: Covered Primary weapon: Copper Hatchet (STR +3) Secondary: Ivory Long-Knife (precision draw-cut) Ranged: Bone Spear (7m, reinforced tip) Effective HP with armor modifiers: Significantly above base Road-travel assessment: Capable The Watchers note the assessment. They note it is accurate. They note it is the first time this has been accurate.
He was running the afternoon circuit's throw practice when the Weapon Mastery notification arrived. Three months of combined stealth-throw drills, the circuit's daily hunting applications stacking against a rank-up counter that had been sitting at 71% since before the plateau broke. Today's session, fifty throws against the bark target at progressively varying distances, had crossed the threshold somewhere around the forty-first.
He knew this because his body knew it before the Nexus confirmed it: the release point cleaner, the follow-through more committed, the motion running a better version of itself than it had yesterday in a way that expressed itself in how the throw felt leaving his hand rather than where it landed. Three months of repetition had apparently produced an outcome. The Nexus was, for once, telling him something he'd already figured out. 【Weapon Mastery: Thrown — Rank-Up!
】 Novice → APPRENTICE Accuracy: +8% → +16% at optimal range Throw force: Physical stat ×1. 4 (improved from ×1. 3) Effective engagement range: Extended to 8. 5m (from 7m) at Apprentice confidence The Watchers note the throw improvement. They note it arrived during the preparation session. They note the timing as either meaningful or convenient. They decline to classify which. He tested the extended range on the final nine throws.
The extra meter and a half wasn't a dramatic change but it was a safety margin, and safety margins were what kept Echoes at three rather than zero. He retrieved the spear and held it for a moment. He had been throwing this weapon at targets in the rust-bark territory for three months. He was not doing this to stay in the rust-bark territory.
He sat at the cliffside's edge in the full kit at dusk, looking out over the territory he'd mapped and survived and built for fifteen weeks, and thought for the first time with deliberate attention about leaving it. Not permanently. He had a Superior-rated shelter, a mapped resource circuit, a defensive position he wouldn't find better without a lot of work or a lot of luck. He would come back, probably. If come back was the right frame, which it might not be once he'd seen what Haven's Reach was. But leaving it.
Walking north with the pack frame and the bark-sheet and the full combat kit, and arriving somewhere with other people and finding out what that was like. He had been moving toward this conclusion for weeks. The Wanderer Path's for now had been saying it since Level 9. The chat accounting on Day 110 had said it more directly.
The hidden Charisma counter's existence had said it in a different register entirely — apparently fifteen weeks of ethical choices in a forest with no witnesses had been quietly accumulating in a column he hadn't known existed, which was either the most on-brand game mechanic in a game full of on-brand game mechanics, or the system's way of noting that what he'd been doing out here had a name and the name wasn't just survival. He was ready to make the decision.
He hadn't made it yet because Level 10 was soon, and he didn't start the next thing until the previous thing was complete. Whether that was discipline or avoidance, the honest proportion was probably not worth examining right now. He opened the channel before sleep and found that LiraT had posted that afternoon.
The flood from last week's storm had reshaped a section of what she'd been mapping as the legitimate scout route, new debris field, gap in the northern approach corridor, not impassable but needing reassessment. She'd checked the Haven's Reach markers past the gap. They were still visible. The route existed. It just needed adjustment. He read it twice. She was mapping the road to Haven's Reach. Not as an abstract planning exercise, as an active survey.
Post-storm condition updates, marker confirmation, route adjustment. She was close enough to the approach corridor that its debris field was operationally relevant, which meant she was close enough to Haven's Reach that the question of how to get there was a practical one. He had been calling the things waiting on the other side of Level 10 decisions for two weeks, in a way he was increasingly aware meant something he hadn't fully examined. He did not open the composition window.
He closed the tab instead and lay down in the shelter he'd built from nothing, that had kept him alive through everything the forest had sent, that he was leaving in two days, possibly three, after Level 10 fired and the last prerequisite on the list was crossed off. He went to sleep in the best position he'd ever been in, preparing to leave it.
