He'd been throwing the spear at the same tree for thirteen days. The tree had not improved from the experience. He had. He ran the formal session after the trap check, twenty throws, timed intervals, the transition from Cautious Movement posture to throwing posture incorporated into each attempt. The miss pattern emerged by the twelfth throw: right-biased, consistent, which meant correctable. Right bias in a right-handed throw meant a late release, the body already rotating before the fingers finished.
He'd built this flaw across twelve days of practice and found it on the thirteenth, which was either a bad timeline or the most useful possible day to discover it. He adjusted his release point on the following eight throws. Hit, hit, hit, hit, hit. Final count: 16/20. Six of those in the innermost circle, which had been aspirational eleven days ago.
【Practice Session — Formal Assessment】 Throw count: 20 │ Middle-circle hits: 16/20 (80%) Innermost circle hits: 6/16 (improved from 2/20 Day 1) Right-bias correction: Applied and verified across final 8 throws Transition accuracy: 13/20 (stealth posture → throw posture, no alignment break) The Watchers note he has been throwing rocks at a tree for eleven days. They note the tree has not moved once. They find his commitment to this arrangement genuinely difficult to explain to outside observers.
Then the Nexus arrived. 【Skill Unlocked】 Weapon Mastery: Thrown (Novice) Passive: Thrown weapon accuracy +8% at optimal range. Thrown damage: Physical stat ×1. 3 on confirmed hits. The Watchers note it took eleven days of unsupervised rock-throwing to reach Novice. Novice. They are choosing not to look up how many tiers remain. Some data is more useful when you don't have it. He ran the confirmation math.
The multiplier stacked against the composite tip's penetration profile and the seven-meter clean-angle calculation produced a number the Nexus endorsed with more specificity than it usually bothered to offer: at Pause Point 1, right-flank strike, the boar's vital organs could not avoid it. He read it twice. He agreed.
"16 out of 20 at seven meters," he said, to the target tree and the bark-sheet and the general principle of earned outcomes.
"I've been throwing a bone-tipped spear at a tree for two weeks and the tree has never retaliated. Tomorrow's target will." He ran the hunt plan once out loud, walked the shelter length with it, let the muscle memory encode the steps. Gear check. Full meal. Bed at 2015. He was in position at 0601. Western approach, Cautious Movement active, the NW breeze holding its direction the way forty-four days of observation said it would. The rust-bark understory moved around him without registering him.
The plan had been a document for twelve days. Now it was just what he was doing. The boar emerged at 0618. One minute off. He adjusted: Pause Point 1 window now 0632–0650. Neither difference was meaningful. He stayed still and watched it move toward the creek, and felt something that wasn't quite relief, he'd trusted the patrol data, and the patrol data was correct, and the feeling of a model being validated by the thing it modelled was its own register. This book was originally published on Royal Road.
Check it out there for the real experience. He started moving when the boar turned east. Cautious Movement, half pace, the soft-ground corridor absorbing his footfalls without comment. The boar reached the flat root section and its head dropped. Scan frequency down. Grazing mode. Seven meters. He was there before he fully registered crossing the distance. He planted his weight. Released early, the way his hands had practiced, the correction locked in across eight throws against a tree that didn't charge back.
The spear left on the correct trajectory, rotating cleanly, and the reinforced tip found the right flank behind the shoulder exactly where twelve days of bark-sheet annotations said it needed to go. The boar didn't fall. He'd known it wouldn't. What he hadn't fully accounted for, despite knowing it intellectually, was the sound — five hundred pounds of wounded animal, the scream of it bouncing off the creek valley walls, the explosion of motion as it registered the hit and couldn't locate the source.
The first charge went forty degrees wide of him, disoriented. Shadow Step fired the moment the spear left his hand. Two seconds of full concealment, that sensation like a held breath past its limit — he moved left, changed angle, the boar's charge carrying it straight through the space where he'd been. It turned. Head up, scanning, the red-rimmed eyes running the area with the focused attention of something in pain that intended to take that pain out on whatever had caused it. It found nothing.
He was fifteen meters away in Cautious Movement and the scan found nothing. He gave it forty seconds. The boar's posture was dropping, the wound doing the math the Nexus had promised, the scan becoming less organized, the breathing audible from where he stood. It hurt and it couldn't find what had hurt it and those two facts were doing his work for him. He had the bone knife in his hand. He wasn't certain when he'd drawn it.
The plan hadn't specified the knife, had specified the withdrawal and reassessment, but his hands had apparently skipped ahead without consulting the document. He closed to eight meters in Cautious Movement. Then six. The boar turned northwest and scanned for something that wasn't there, and he closed to four. The knife went in at the base of the skull.
The boar went down in the space between one second and the next, and the forest returned to its regular ambient register as if nothing had happened, and he stepped back and his hands were shaking. He sat down on the flat root section at Pause Point 1, the exact spot he'd spent six hours observing the boar occupy across four reconnaissance sessions, and waited for his hands to stop. 【Combat XP — Solo Kill】 Forest Boar (Adult, Level 14): Planned tactical engagement. First throw confirmed.
Shadow Step concealment applied. Finisher executed. Combat XP: +280. Weapon Mastery: Thrown — significant progress. Forty-eight days of preparation. Ninety seconds. The Watchers are doing the math on that ratio and find it speaks for itself. They would also like to note that the boar appeared to be favoring its left foreleg, which is information they are simply putting on the table.
"Okay," he said, to the boar and the creek and the general situation.
"That was significantly more than a rabbit." He sat with that for a moment. The boar was enormous up close in a way that thirty-five meters of observation had not fully communicated, and his hand was still on the hide because the hide density was exactly what he'd calculated and his brain was apparently insisting on verifying this several times.
"If Brenda could see me right now," he said, mostly to himself, "she would never give me another data entry backlog as long as she lived. Sharp stick, Brenda. One sharp stick." He looked at the boar. The boar had no notes on the matter.
"Yeah," he said.
"That's what I thought." He opened the bark-sheet to the supply log and wrote: Day 47. Boar. Clean kill. Then he started processing. Two hours before the sun angle shifted, a significant amount of material to move, and a resource route waiting on the other side of the work. He didn't mind.
