The XP bar tipped while he was carrying firewood. Not during the wolf-parallel stealth drill he'd run at dawn, which would have been narratively appropriate. Not during the training circuit, which at least had the dignity of being deliberate physical effort.
During lumber transport — three armfuls of split ironwood from the woodpile extension to the shelter's fuel reserve, his third trip, his mind on the fuel-burn calculation for the next five days and whether the pale bracket fungi colony was ready for its second harvest cycle. The blue cascade arrived between the second and third armfuls and he almost dropped the load. He didn't drop it.
He kept walking the twelve steps to the fuel reserve, set the wood down with carefully, and then stood in his shelter doorway reading the level-up notification with the expression of a man who has been waiting for something for thirteen days and is now experiencing the arrival of that thing while covered in wood chips. 【LEVEL UP! 】 You have reached Level 7. 5 Free Attribute Points available. XP to Level 8: 3, 000 Crafting Apprentice tree: UNLOCKED Through grinding patience, you reach the next stone on the path.
The Watchers have seen Level 7 arrive in many ways. Combat. Crisis. A man once hit Level 7 falling off a cliff, which was at least exciting on the way down. Player 4782 hit Level 7 moving lumber. He did not even drop it. He just — leveled up — and then kept walking, which is either the most efficient thing they have ever witnessed or the least interesting, and the Watchers are finding, to their displeasure, that those are not mutually exclusive. There is a thorn-serpent colony two kilometers east.
There is a ridge-stalker that has been watching his perimeter for three days. These are not suggestions. The Watchers do not make suggestions. They are simply logging assets that are being criminally underutilized by a man who smells like sawdust.
"Yup," he said, to the shelter and the woodpile and the general principle of level-up timing.
"Which is frankly the safer option. Not during a heroic moment. During lumber transport. The Watchers are as disappointed as I am." He allocated before he'd picked up the next armful. Agility and Perception were the co-primaries — the combat game and the hunting game were the next things requiring improvement, and both stats fed both goals. Two each.
The fifth point into Intellect, because the Crafting Apprentice notification had appeared alongside the level-up and the new recipe categories required the investment to unlock the higher tiers. He'd been building toward this threshold since the chest armor project had first been flagged as pending on the priority queue, and the investment now would pay forward across every crafting session he ran from this point. 【Attributes Updated】 Agility: 12. 7 → 14. 7 (+2) Perception: 11. 4 → 13. 4 (+2) Intellect: 6. 7 → 7.
7 (+1) HP: 310 → 330 Crafting Apprentice tree: UNLOCKED The Watchers note the allocation. They note the Agility gain with particular attention. They make a note to speak with the wolf population. The Agility adjustment was immediate in the way physical stat gains always were — a settling and then a re-settlement, his body redistributing its default weight allocation to accommodate the new movement potential.
He picked up the third armful of firewood and carried it to the fuel reserve and the twelve steps felt measurably more controlled than the twelve steps before the allocation, which was either genuinely the stat expressing itself or the power of knowing the stat had changed. Both, probably. Both were real. He opened the Crafting Apprentice tree and read through the new categories.
【Crafting Apprentice Tree — UNLOCKED】 New recipe categories accessible: — Improved Tools (Apprentice): Superior durability, reduced maintenance frequency — Medicinal Compounds (Apprentice): Multi-compound treatments, condition management — Basic Armor (Apprentice): Leather + bone composite — requires structural-grade leather Prerequisite materials for Basic Armor: Confirmed in current inventory. The Watchers note the chest armor project has been in the queue for eleven days. They say nothing further.
The silence is its own comment. He didn't read the Nexus's silence wrong. The chest armor went first. He'd had the cured pelts in the elevated cache long enough that they'd started feeling like permanent fixtures rather than pending materials. The chest armor project had been on the bark-sheet's priority queue for eleven days with a note next to it that had progressed from 'soon' to 'this week' to something he'd stopped writing down because the notation had become embarrassing.
The bone-plate reinforcement components were already shaped from the femur fragments. The binding system was the same doubled-vine and resin technique that had held everything structural in this camp since the hatchet head. What was new was the Basic Armor recipe's construction geometry — the way the leather sections needed to overlap at the torso's high-impact zones, the bone plates positioned not for coverage area but for load distribution across the points where a predator's primary strike would connect.
He read the recipe schema three times before starting, because reading the schema correctly was the difference between armor that held and armor that looked right from the front and failed from the side. The work took three hours. Not three hours of dramatic, heroic crafting — three hours of careful problem-solving in which the careful part was doing more work than his hands were. The shoulder section went in cleanly.
The torso coverage needed two recuts of the main leather panel before the geometry matched the bone-plate positions.
The lower section — protecting the abdomen where a boar tusk's upward arc would connect on a charging approach — required a structural decision about flexibility versus coverage that he resolved by laminating a thinner hare-pelt layer over the primary wolf-hide, which was either elegant engineering or evidence that he'd miscalculated the primary layer, and he was choosing to characterize it as the former.
He had been alone for thirty-one days and there was no one available to audit this decision, which was the one concrete benefit of solo operation he was prepared to acknowledge. Stolen story; please report. The result was not elegant. He knew this before the Nexus confirmed it.
【Crafting Success】 Leather-Bone Chest Armor (Common) Physical damage reduction: 22% (predator strike — moderate impact) Coverage: Torso, shoulder (partial), abdomen Durability: 48/48 Weight: Moderate (movement penalty: −6% at full exertion) Construction quality: Functional — asymmetric finish (cosmetically imperfect, structurally sound) The Watchers note you made armor. They note it is slightly crooked.
They would also like to note that armor is, at its core, a hypothesis — a theory that the materials and construction will perform as intended when something with teeth makes a counterargument. They find unverified hypotheses aesthetically incomplete. There are wolves within two kilometers. The Watchers are not telling him to go find one. They are simply observing that the scientific method exists for a reason and that he is, currently, holding untested data. They would find the test very interesting.
They would find the results educational. For everyone. He pointedly ignored their comments and put it on. The fit was better than the construction quality suggested it would be — his measurement work had been accurate even when the geometry was fiddly, and the leather had a natural conformity to his torso's shape that the rigid bone-plate reinforcement benefited from rather than fighting. The right shoulder sat approximately four millimeters higher than the left, which was the asymmetric finish the Nexus had noted.
He decided to characterize this as a custom fit rather than a manufacturing defect. He walked to the creek. The rust-bark creek, eastern approach, the route that maintained four hundred meters from the boar's territorial center — he'd been running this approach in Cautious Movement for practice, the route now as mapped in his body as the training circuit. He found a section of still water in the boulder formation's lee and crouched at the edge and looked at his reflection. The cargo shorts, still.
The grey t-shirt, still, considerably less grey after thirty-one days of field use. One sneaker on the left foot. The wolf-leather shoulder wrap, the chest armor over it with its bone-plate inlays catching the afternoon light. His face, which had developed over a month the specific weathered quality of a face that spends most of its time outdoors.
"I now have armor," he said, to the reflection and the creek and the rust-bark forest that had been trying to contextualize him since his first crossing into it.
"Leather and bone, slightly asymmetric, smells like the tanning process I used, which was not ideal. It reduces damage by twenty-two percent. I am twenty-two percent harder to kill than I was this morning. Significant upgrade." The reflection didn't argue. He looked like someone who lived here. Not someone surviving here, not someone enduring here, someone who had assessed the environment and built a response to it, not just to be overtaken by it.
The distinction was visible in the reflection in a way he couldn't have named precisely but didn't need to. He filled both water skins and came back. 【Equipment — Chest Armor (equipped)】 Physical damage reduction active: 22% Movement penalty (full exertion): −6% Combined with Wolf-Leather Wrap: Shoulder + torso coverage The Watchers note you are no longer wearing only civilian clothing. This took 31 days. They adjust the threat parameters for threats within your territory.
The evening patrol ran differently with the armor on. Heavier — not dramatically, but perceptibly, the weight distributed across his torso in a way that the shoulder wrap alone hadn't been. He ran the training circuit at half pace deliberately, calibrating the weight penalty under controlled conditions rather than pushing through it blind.
The movement penalty the Nexus had quoted at six percent was real at full exertion and close to negligible at the sustainable circuit pace, which meant the armor's cost was primarily in peak-sprint contexts rather than the sustained movement that defined most of his operational activity. The boar engagement would be a sustained movement context. Cautious Movement approach, throw, immediate Cautious Movement retreat. Not a sprint.
The six percent movement penalty applied differently there — extending the retreat time slightly, which he'd need to account for in the readiness calculation. He adjusted the boar plan timeline on the bark-sheet. New readiness estimate: nine days from tonight. He was eating the evening Mushroom-Root Stew when the [LiraT] post appeared in the channel sidebar. He opened it. [LiraT]: SE biome edge note — rust-bark transition zone has three water sources within 2km of the Mistveil border, two of which are territorial.
[LiraT]: the third is accessible from the eastern approach if you avoid the 400m southwest zone. clean water. He stopped with the spoon halfway. The eastern approach. The 400-meter southwest zone.
He was reading a description of the rust-bark creek's access route — his route, the one he'd mapped over two field visits and one near-miss with a Forest Boar — described from an external observational position located somewhere close enough to the creek and the Mistveil border to have mapped the same territorial patterns he'd mapped independently. She was north of him. She was close enough to the rust-bark transition that they might be describing the same watershed from different directions.
He updated two notes on the bark-sheet. The water source confirmation. The territorial zone corroboration. He added a new line: [LiraT] position estimate: 2–4km NNE. Consistent with Mistveil boundary proximity. Two to four kilometers north-northeast. Not close enough to see each other's fires. Close enough that they were describing the same creek from different angles without knowing they were doing it.
Close enough that if he'd posted his eleven words, she might have read them and known exactly what territory he was in. He noted that this was either the best argument for having deleted them or the worst one, and he was not going to decide which tonight. He closed the chat tab — had been watching himself start to open the composition window again and had closed the tab instead, which was faster than opening the window and typing eleven words and deleting them and he was getting tired of the sequence.
Thirty-one days. Level 7. Chest armor, slightly crooked, twenty-two percent harder to kill. A boar plan nine days from readiness by the revised estimate. A shelter with a locked door and a training program that had made him measurably faster and quieter than he'd been a month ago. He was still alive. He was significantly more capable of staying that way. The plateau had produced this, the thirteen grinding days that the XP bar had made feel like standing still while he was moving the whole time.
He checked the XP bar for the next level. 3, 000 XP. He looked at the number, did the current daily rate calculation, arrived at the answer, and closed the bar without letting himself feel anything about the answer. The plateau continued. He had a plan for the boar. That was enough for tonight.
