The boar was dead. He'd processed it the evening before — three hours, the full capacity of his bone knife, and a growing understanding the killing portion of this endeavor ended up being the easiest and less work intensive part. The pelt was the largest piece of leather material he'd ever handled, the quality classified as Exceptional, a tier above anything in his current inventory. The meat was in the elevated cache in careful portions, eight days of full-nutrition meals.
The tusks were alongside the copper ore in the materials cache, applications TBD, structural quality obvious. He'd eaten the two post-hunt stew portions sitting outside in the dark. They'd tasted better than any meal he'd made in forty-seven days, partly the stew's quality, partly the flavor of a promise that arrived exactly on schedule. He had been twelve days of preparation and one boar in the making of those portions. It was worth it. The hunt had worked. This morning he was running the circuit.
The circuit's first leg was the rust-bark copper seam — two hours north, the pack frame distributing the load across both shoulders. The terrain moved under him the way terrain moved when the body had learned it, less a series of obstacles requiring individual decisions and more just ground. He reached the seam at 0840.
The extraction technique had become automatic somewhere in the last week — the hammerstone finding its angle before his conscious attention arrived with instructions, the copper-bearing sections separating from their host rock with a quality that his first attempt here had not produced. He had, at some point become a person who extracted copper ore somewhat efficiently. The Nexus had noted this. So had his forearms. He filled the pack frame in forty minutes and started the return leg.
【Extraction Session — Copper Seam】 Ore extracted: 15kg (Apprentice Tier) Technique efficiency: Improved vs. Day 1 extraction Strength: 13. 4 → 13. 5 (+0. 1 — sustained haul and extraction work) Seam integrity: Good — significant yield remaining The Watchers observe the industrial operation. They note the word "industrial" is somewhat overexaggerated. The game trail convergence was the second leg — the three trails merging into their corridor half a kilometer south of the seam.
He cached the ore at the biome boundary, dropped the pack frame, and ran the approach with the combined stealth-throw methodology. Two kills of some sort of pheasant creature in forty minutes, both at the corridor's choke point, both throws landing clean on the first attempt without repositioning. Both fantastic additions to his stew. He processed at the corridor's edge and added the meat to the carry load.
The Weapon Mastery passive expressed itself the way passive bonuses always did in this world, not visibly, not dramatically, just in the outcome. He was getting accustomed to competence arriving quietly, without announcement. He was choosing to find this acceptable rather than suspicious.
【Hunting XP — Convergence Zone】 Kills: 2 (combined stealth-throw technique) Throw accuracy: 2/2 at optimal range Combat XP: +150 Weapon Mastery: Thrown — rank-up progress noted The Watchers observe he has run the same circuit eleven mornings in a row. They observe it is very safe. They observe he has more boar meat than he can eat in two weeks and went and got more meat anyway. There are thorn-serpents forty meters east of his current position. The Watchers are not suggesting anything.
They are simply noting the proximity and that it might be interesting to investigate. The biome-edge leg took ninety minutes — the systematic shimmer-scan along the transition zone section he hadn't covered in the previous expedition. The Foraging passive lit up three new specimens: two in the blue shimmer range, one in the amber-blue requiring staged testing. He took samples of all three and marked the locations. The test-priority list was accumulating entries faster than the testing protocol was clearing them.
He noted this as a future-week problem rather than a today problem, and moved on. 【Exploration — Biome Edge】 New terrain covered: 0. 8 km (transition zone, unmapped sections) Exploration XP: +90 New specimens: 3 (2 blue shimmer, 1 amber-blue — testing pending) Perception: 13. 8 → 13. 9 (+0. 1 — sustained novel biome observation) The Watchers note the expansion is systematic. They note systematic things are pretty boring. They suggest reaching out of his comfort zone, it could've be good for him. Or not.
The craft work at home base — breaking the copper-bearing stone from its grey matrix host, separating and sizing the ore for the eventual smelting process — was the circuit's fourth leg and the only one that happened in the shelter's warmth. The clay survey was next on the prerequisite list. The crucible fabrication was the step after that. He was two steps from the processing capability that would convert the ore cache into the Copper-Plate Armor and Copper-Reinforced Tools sitting in the recipe preview.
Two steps was not two days, but it was not fourteen steps either, and there had been periods when fourteen would have felt optimistic. He pulled up the HUD to look at the days summary, an action he hadn't been watching too closely, but wanted to check on his progress. The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
【Daily XP Summary】 Copper ore extraction: +52 Active hunting (convergence zone): +150 Biome-edge exploration: +90 Craft work (ore preparation): +48 Total daily XP: 340 Plateau daily average: 190 Efficiency improvement: +79% Level 7 projected at current rate: 7–9 days The Watchers note the breakthrough with significant irritation. They note the irritation is accurate.
"Fine be irritated, it'll give you something else to do." Finn said below his breath. He sat with the daily total and let it be real for a moment. Three hundred and forty. Not an exceptional day, not a day that required special conditions or unusual luck, just the first full run of a circuit he'd mapped and optimized across two weeks. The plateau had been generating 190 on a good day. This was a baseline day, the floor of what the new circuit produced without anything going particularly right.
"Five days," he said, to the bark-sheet and the ore pile and the Level 7 bar that had moved more today than in the previous eleven combined.
"Maybe eight if I'm accounting for variance. Weeks, I was measuring this in weeks." He looked at the projection.
"The better circuit was just sitting there. Genuinely just sitting there the whole time." A pause.
"I'm not mad about it," he said, in the tone of someone who was a little mad about it. The plateau was ending.
He'd been on it for twenty-five days and it was ending because he'd found a route the plateau version of his toolkit couldn't have run, the copper seam required the environmental read he hadn't had at Level 2, the game trail convergence required the stealth-throw combination he hadn't built until Level 6, the biome-edge exploration required the Foraging Apprentice passive that had arrived at the plateau's midpoint. The route was the product of everything he'd accumulated.
He couldn't have run it earlier because he hadn't been capable of running it earlier. That was what the plateau had been for. He filed this without drama. He opened the channel for the first time in two days. Three posts from [LiraT]. He read them in order. The first was a predator movement update for the Mistveil ridgeline — the pack behavior she'd flagged before had shifted east, reducing the clearance requirement on the western approach by approximately 200 meters.
Immediately applicable to the northern route planning he'd been staging. The second was a note about a botanical cluster at her biome edge — brown-capped fungi with dense growth pattern, Foraging passive flagging with emphatic shimmer. He read this twice. Emphatic shimmer was the same signal his passive had produced for the rust-bark large-leaf specimens still in his test-priority queue. Different species, same signal tier, different grids. She was running the same passive and encountering the same anomaly class.
The third post made him stop. [LiraT]: found a mineral deposit worth noting — copper-bearing stone, blue-green surface banding. [LiraT]: sharing coordinates: [Sector 7, Grid 2-C, NE face of boulder cluster]. [LiraT]: to be clear — these are the coordinates of the deposit, not my location. the deposit is worth noting, i'm not there right now. [LiraT]: the channel has a problem, so: that's the deposit, not me. He read the last two lines three times.
She'd anticipated the inference and addressed it before it could be made. She'd shared a resource coordinate and then immediately clarified the distinction the threat model required, not because anyone had asked, but because she'd been running the same threat model long enough that the preemptive note had become reflex. She knew the channel's problem the same way he knew it. She'd been thinking about the same architecture, the same risk, for approximately as long as he had.
"Clever," he said, and then didn't say anything else for a while. She'd figured out the same problem he had and found a partial solution to it and posted the solution to the channel for anyone to use, which was the part he kept coming back to. She'd done the part he hadn't. The posting part. The being-useful-to-strangers-at-minor-personal-cost part. He looked at the two paragraphs he'd drafted twice this week and deleted twice this week.
"Good for her," he said, with complete sincerity and absolutely no self-examination happening whatsoever. The deposit coordinates were two kilometers northeast of his seam, a different section of the same geological formation, which confirmed the continuity. There was more copper in the rust-bark zone than thirty kilograms. The circuit's resource leg had more depth than he'd mapped. He added the coordinates to the bark-sheet: [LiraT] source, Sector 7 Grid 2-C. Formation extends NE. Expanded yield potential.
He made the Mushroom-Root Stew for dinner with the boar meat base, richer than the standard recipe, the Apprentice Cooking passive registering it as an upgrade. He ate it with the bark-sheet's updated projections in front of him. Seven to nine days to Level 7. A geological formation larger than he'd thought. A source who had independently found both the resource and the problem model and addressed both in the same four-line post. He was awake four times during the night.
Not from threat awareness, the perimeter held, the shelter held, the forest ran its established register without triggering anything. The four awakenings were from the other category, which he identified on the second waking and noted as a data point: anticipation. The kind that arrived when the next thing was clearly approaching and the wait had a defined duration short enough to feel real rather than abstract. Anticipation: present, manageable, filed. He went back to sleep each time. The plateau was ending.
He was looking forward to Level 7. Morning was coming.
