One hundred days. He marked it the only way he knew how: current state, baseline, delta. The quarterly review went on the blank side of the third bark-sheet. He wrote the heading and crossed it out because the month didn't exist here, and wrote Day 100. What happened. instead. The summary was this: Level 9. Wanderer Path. Echoes 3/5, which meant two deaths and a lot of not dying. One near-miss on Day 83 that the skills held. The raptor, Day 67.
He added it without ceremony because the accounting didn't get to be accurate by omitting things that cost something. Nine skills from zero. One Uncommon shelter with no highlighted weaknesses. One Uncommon armor set. One resource circuit producing 435 XP daily. One destination in the destination column. He looked at the summary.
"Not bad," he said, to the morning and the rust-bark forest dropping away below the shelf.
"For a data analyst in cargo shorts who got here by yawning at his desk." He paused.
"I'm going to note that and then move on before I make it weird." He moved on. 【Milestone: 100 Days Survived — Solo】 The Wanderer endures. The wilds have catalogued you as a permanent resident. Solo days: 100 | Deaths: 2 | Echoes: 3/5 | Skills: 9 Hidden Charisma: 7. 8 (accumulated through conduct — 0 points allocated) The Watchers note he has been building a social stat for one hundred days without knowing it existed. The horrors persist, and so do you. For now. He read the Hidden Charisma number three times.
"Seven point eight," he said.
"I have a Charisma score of 7. 8 and I have not had a conversation with a human being in one hundred days." He looked at the notification.
"The system has been tracking conduct. I have been conducting myself ethically in a forest with no witnesses. The forest has apparently been writing it down." He sat with the implications. Haven's Reach had thousands of people in it. He had verified this from channel data, KaiS's structural reports, the scout activity patterns. Thousands of people, a social ecosystem, a settlement that ran on the kind of coordination that required people to speak to each other with some degree of competence.
He was going to walk into that with a Charisma score built entirely from talking to a fire, a maybe-now-deceased raptor, and the occasional boar he'd been about to kill.
"I need to raise this," he said.
"Before I get there. Somehow." He looked at the forest.
"Somehow." The question of how to raise a social stat while being comprehensively alone turned out to produce a list that was shorter than he'd have liked. He could post in the channel. He opened the composition window. He looked at it. He closed it.
"Nope," he said.
"Next option." He considered talking to the shelter more deliberately, on the theory that the system had been tracking his monologues and might continue to do so. He had been talking to the shelter for one hundred days. If that were sufficient the number would be higher. He filed this under insufficient data and moved on. He looked at the ethical choices angle for a long time.
The hidden stat had grown from conduct, from the pattern of decisions made under conditions where the worse option had always been available. Which meant the growth mechanism wasn't conversation, it was the accumulation of choices that demonstrated something the system classified as social character. He had been making those choices for one hundred days without trying.
The question was whether making them more deliberately would accelerate the growth or just make him feel like he was doing something productive when he wasn't. This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
"The honest answer," he said, to the bark-sheet, "is that the only real way to raise a social stat is to be social. Which requires people. Which are at Haven's Reach." He looked at the departure prerequisites column.
"So the answer to 'how do I raise Charisma before I get there' is 'get there faster.'" He added departure prep: accelerate to the prerequisites column. 【Charisma — Growth Analysis】 Current: 7. 8 (hidden — not visible in Status until group content) Growth mechanism: Ethical conduct, positive channel engagement, ally affinity Projected growth: Stagnant at current solo rate Note: Meaningful growth requires social context.
The Watchers observe him attempting to reverse-engineer a social skill while sitting alone on a cliff. They note he has concluded that the solution is to go somewhere with people in it. They note it took him approximately twelve minutes to reach this conclusion. They note the conclusion was available on Day 1. They are not going to say anything else about the twelve minutes. They are absolutely going to keep thinking about it. The channel that afternoon had two items worth the bark-sheet.
[CrimsonEdge] hadn't posted in eight days. Two additional cell accounts had gone quiet in the same window. He ran the updated threat assessment: network activity down sixty to seventy percent from prior baseline, confidence spread across sector migration, target saturation, and external disruption. He filed it under opportunity window, unconfirmed duration and added it to the route intelligence column with the appropriate hedge. A quieter corridor was not a safe corridor. It was a corridor worth timing.
Then [LiraT]. [LiraT]: scout marker pattern confirmed at 3 locations. organized systematic survey. [LiraT]: confident this is legitimate Haven's Reach activity, not the other network. [LiraT]: considering moving in that direction when I have a safer read on timing. He read it again. He caught his hand moving toward the composition window and redirected it to the bark-sheet instead.
"She's considering moving," he said, in a tone he'd have called flat if he were being less honest.
"The person whose environmental data has improved my operational picture eleven times across one hundred days is considering moving toward the same destination I have in my destination column." He wrote it on the bark-sheet.
"to be fair, I think it's the only destination, at least that I know of, but still." He looked at what he'd written.
"That's not only a route intelligence update," he said.
"I know that's not only a route intelligence update." He wrote below it, in smaller marks: timeline has changed. He spent the evening on departure prep. The prerequisites column had five items. Cave sector seven was the one that required the most planning — unexplored, unknown threat profile, the lighting solution still being staged from materials the circuit had been accumulating for two weeks. He pulled the cave planning section and updated it with the current kit assessment.
The Uncommon armor changed the risk calculus. The Wanderer terrain passive changed the approach options. He could run the cave tomorrow if the lighting solution held, which it would, because he'd built it from three data points instead of one and it was going to hold. Route final check was the other long item.
The bark-sheet's northern territory was annotated but not complete — fourteen kilometers of partial data, the triangle-symbols meaning be careful here covering the sections he'd mapped from channel intelligence rather than direct observation. He could extend the circuit push for three more sessions and close most of the gaps. He added the sessions to the week's plan. The greaves were in the crafting preview. The ore for session three was in the cache.
He added greave construction to the departure prep column because leaving Haven's Reach without complete leg coverage was a choice that required justification, and he didn't have a justification.
"Level 10 soon," he said, to the prerequisites list.
"Cave the day after. Route pushes for three days. Greaves if the ore holds. Then." He looked at Haven's Reach: north in the destination column.
"Then the timing question." The timing question was whether considering moving in [LiraT]'s post meant days or weeks and whether the PK network's reduced activity window was going to hold long enough to matter and whether his own prerequisites were going to resolve before the window closed. He didn't have enough data to answer the timing question. He'd built his entire methodology on not making decisions before he had sufficient data.
He was aware, sitting in the entrance of the best shelter he'd built in the light of the fading Crimson wild sun, that there was a version of this where waiting for sufficient data was just waiting. He banked the fire. He dropped the latch bar. The door held. Outside: the rust-bark forest, the 200-meter sightlines, the stars in their wrong colors doing their slow pulse on the northern horizon.
Somewhere north-northeast: a person who had improved his operational picture eleven times without knowing he existed, who was considering moving toward the same destination he'd been building toward for eighty days. He went to sleep thinking about the gap between considering and moving and what his own prerequisites list meant for that gap, and the thought that arrived without being requested was: you've been going the same direction for a while now. He let it exist. He didn't examine it further.
One thing at a time.
