The raptor was waiting at the perimeter when he opened the shelter door. It had been doing this for five days. The first morning it had been there, he'd stood in the doorway for a full thirty seconds trying to decide what to file it under. He'd settled on bonded companion behavior, reference taming notes and had moved on, which was the correct operational response and which had not prevented the second morning from producing the same thirty-second pause, or the third, or this one.
The acknowledging nod had developed somewhere around Day 3 — the kind of gesture that arrives without a decision being made about it. The Nexus had not acknowledged the nod with a skill point. He was counting it anyway. He went to check the traps. The raptor ranged ahead. The territory expansion had been the week's primary operational development.
With the raptor ranging forty meters ahead on the circuit's northern and eastern legs, the dead-zones he'd been approaching with full Cautious Movement protocol had opened into assessable terrain. The raptor moved through them at its natural pace and its absence of alarm told him what a four-hour reconnaissance session would have told him at slower throughput. Three new sectors in five days. Sector 5 had produced a secondary mineral deposit noted for the copper formation's northeastern extension.
Sector 6 had a Grade B water source — cleaner than the home stream, less accessible, useful as backup. Sector 7 was the one he kept returning to in his mental mapping: a cave formation his Perception had flagged when the raptor's circling pattern drew his attention to the right section of rock face. He hadn't entered it yet — staging the entry for when he had better lighting solutions than his current fire-at-range approach.
The raptor's mid-circuit signal came at the third-leg junction — it vanished into the undergrowth at his eleven o'clock, the specific disappearance-pattern his body had learned to read as distinct from its casual ranging before he'd consciously codified the difference. Deliberate disappearance, short range. Return within ninety seconds from approximately the same direction. He dropped into Cautious Movement.
【Scout Signal — Detected】 Raptor behavior: Directional withdrawal + return (11 o'clock) Assessment: Proximate hazard, static Cautious Movement: Active Perception range: Extended (scout passive) The Watchers note the raptor identified the threat, communicated the threat, and took appropriate cover, all before Finn had completed his own assessment. They note he is currently using a Level 9 predator as his primary early warning system.
They note the raptor does not have a bark-sheet, a threat model, or 63 days of Perception training, and found the hazard first anyway. They are updating their comparative intelligence file. The thorn-serpents were denning under a deadfall thirty meters off the circuit path, a nest he'd have assessed as dormant based on the shed-skin color gradient, except the scout passive's extended read was giving him the tunnel entrance diameter measurement that put it in the recent-formation category.
[LiraT]'s framework, applied automatically: 18-to-22 centimeter diameter, active nest, higher aggression radius, 200-meter clearance. He marked the location on the bark-sheet and routed around it. The raptor reappeared at his two o'clock and resumed its ranging pattern, already two circuits ahead of the hazard site, indifferent to the warning it had just provided in the way that operationally effective things are indifferent to their own utility.
"Okay," he said, to the raptor's retreating shape ahead of him in the canopy gaps.
"That was yours. I'm giving you that one." He watched it thread between the rust-bark trunks like the terrain wasn't there.
"I was just going to walk right into it, wasn't I." The raptor did not look back.
"Yeah," he said.
"I know you know." The circuit's fourth leg produced the level. He wasn't watching the counter. He had stopped watching it daily sometime in the second week of the breakthrough phase, because watching it was a way of slowing down the effective rate of time-passage while the number moved at its own pace regardless. He was thinking about the cave formation and its entry requirements when the cascade arrived between the biome edge's third new-specimen identification and the return leg's start point. He stopped.
The raptor stopped too, twenty meters ahead, turning back to assess why the forward element had halted. He raised a hand. It held position. 【LEVEL UP! 】 You have reached Level 8. 5 Free Attribute Points available. XP to Level 9: 5, 000 Time from Level 7: 5 days. Stair-step acceleration confirmed. The Watchers note Level 8. They note the Crimson Wilds has threats rated up to Level 18 that Finn has been routing around since spawn. They note he has a raptor now.
They note the thorn-serpents are not going to hunt themselves. They are not telling him what to do. They are simply observing that Level 8 in a Level 18 zone is, mathematically, still quite low, and the circuit is getting a little repetitive to watch.
"yeah, I'll get right on that" he said, to the rust-bark forest and the raptor holding position at twenty meters and the generally indifferent universe.
"Five days. The plateau took three weeks for the same distance. I found the right system. Finally. I'm not going to be smug about this because the forest doesn't care about smug." He allocated. Agility and Perception as paired primaries — he noted, without particularly dwelling on it, that this was the first time since Day 1 a creature had materially influenced his attribute planning.
The scout passive's range extension made every point of base Perception more valuable at scale, and the territory expansion it enabled made movement efficiency the multiplier on all of it. The raptor was a temporary practical arrangement. It had still rearranged his quarterly allocation strategy. He was choosing to treat this as a feature rather than a diagnostic. This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
Strength got the fifth point because the copper-tool crafting pathway required sustained investment there, and because his combat profile was tilting toward the Agility side in ways that needed the physical anchor to remain balanced under actual engagement conditions. 【Attributes Updated】 Agility: 15. 6 → 17. 6 (+2) Perception: 13. 9 → 15. 9 (+2) Strength: 15. 5 → 16. 5 (+1) HP: 370 → 400 The Watchers note Agility 17. 6. They note Perception 15. 9 with the scout passive adds up to something they need to factor.
They schedule a parameters review. This is the fourth parameters review. The raptor resumed its ranging when he moved again, slotting back into its circuit pattern with the practical immediacy of something that had observed the pause, registered its nature, neither threat nor food, therefore resume operation and returned to its function.
He ran the remaining circuit legs with the expanded coverage producing a read of the terrain that was beginning to feel less like what he could detect and more like what he'd need to actively try to miss. He mapped two additional features on the return leg that the new baseline caught where the old one hadn't — a secondary game trail convergence in sector 5 that would improve the hunting leg's yield, and a water seepage at the sector 4 rock face that confirmed the underlying water table's proximity. Daily XP: 415.
He wrote it on the bark-sheet and looked at the Level 9 requirement. 5, 000 XP. At 380–415 per day, assuming reasonable variation: twelve to fourteen days. He'd need to build in the cave formation exploration when he staged it — a single session that would generate significant exploration XP. Call it ten to twelve if the cave produced.
He started the evening meal when he reached camp, the raptor transitioning from circuit-ranging posture to camp posture with the shift the past five days had made predictable — tighter range, perimeter-adjacent, the shelter's familiarity apparently having become part of its working model. He cooked the Mushroom-Root Stew. He cooked a second smaller portion.
He set the second portion outside the perimeter on the flat rock he'd been using as a feeding station since Day 2 of the bond, which the Nexus had confirmed as bond-maintenance behavior on Day 3, which he'd been using that confirmation to justify what he would have done anyway.
"The thing is," he said, to the raptor, "if you had a name, this would be a much more normal conversation. I could say 'hey, good work today' and it would land differently. Right now I'm just talking at you, which is." He considered this.
"Which is what I'm doing anyway, but a name would make it feel more intentional." The raptor looked up briefly, then went back to eating.
"I had good names, for the record. Really solid options. You would've liked them. I'm very confident you would've liked them." He watched it eat.
"The naming thing is just not a good idea. Practical reasons. Which I've explained. You were there for that conversation, you did the head tilt thing, you understand the situation." The raptor trilled. Short, low, not directed at anything in particular.
"Yeah," he said.
"I think so too." He paused.
"That's not — I know you didn't say anything. I'm aware of that. I'm just." Another pause.
"It's been a long day." 【Bond Maintenance — Logged】 Supplemental feeding: Day 5 Bond affinity: 74% — stable (temporary ceiling — Beast Core required) Movement bonus: +15% rust-bark terrain (active) Scout passive: Active Note: Temporary bond degradation rate: Reduced by consistent positive reinforcement. The Watchers observe the feeding ritual. They are hoping he does know that the raptor cannot understand your language, right? He checked the channel after dinner. [LiraT] had posted at 1420.
He read the timestamp before the content. Habit. [LiraT]: thorn-serpent activity pattern has shifted in the eastern sector, nests that were dormant last week are showing active indicators. [LiraT]: shed-skin coloration changing toward the blue-grey range across multiple sites. checking whether the storm pattern is driving this or if there's a territorial expansion happening. [LiraT]: recommend treating any previously-mapped dormant nest as potentially active until you verify current shed-skin status.
He looked at the thorn-serpent denning site on his bark-sheet, marked this morning, with the active-nest notation and the 200-meter clearance. He looked at her post timestamp. Her observation and his observation were the same observation from different positions.
She was northeast, eight to twelve kilometers, working the same data from a different angle — the shed-skin shift from dormant-indicator to active-indicator across multiple sites was the environmental signal, and both of them had caught it on the same day because both of them were running the same kind of systematic environmental scan of their respective territories.
【Perception Synthesis】 [LiraT] post: thorn-serpent activity shift (cross-sector) Cross-reference: Personal observation — 1 new active nest confirmed this morning Pattern: Environmental trigger causing simultaneous activation across multiple sites Assessment: Storm-precursor activity or territorial expansion (LiraT's framework — two hypotheses) Recommendation: Extend active-nest assumption to all previously-mapped dormant sites pending verification Perception: 15. 9 → 16. 0 (+0. 1 — external data integration expanding environmental model) The Watchers note he and [LiraT] have now independently mapped the same environmental shift from different positions and arrived at compatible conclusions, which is what two people working together looks like except neither of them knows the other exists. They note he could post in the channel. They note the channel is right there. They note his current social roster consists of one temporarily-bonded predator he won't name.
They find this a compelling argument for trying something different. The worst case is someone tries to kill him, which at least would be more interesting than the morning circuit. He updated the bark-sheet. Every previously-mapped thorn-serpent site now had a provisional active-nest notation pending fresh shed-skin verification — six sites in total, two confirmed active, four requiring circuit verification in the next three days.
He wrote it in the same dark charcoal he used for the threat model rules, because it had the same quality of mandatory. He was eight to twelve kilometers from the only person in 289 active accounts running the same kind of systematic environmental analysis he was running. The distance was not improving. He had done all the correct things one did about a distance like this, and the distance remained exactly what it was. He did not post.
The raptor was on the shelter's exterior wall, the position it had taken on its second night at camp and returned to each night since. He could hear it through the walls. He lay down behind the locked door and thought about the cave formation in sector 7 and its entry plan, and the copper crucible's third attempt curing in the shelter corner, and twelve to fourteen days to Level 9 if the circuit held. He thought about the observation in the channel that complemented his own and that he couldn't respond to.
He went to sleep
