Chương 31: Stealthy

There was a difference between hunting something and studying it, and today he was doing the second one. He'd made this distinction on the walk back from the rust-bark field camp, while his body ran the return circuit on autopilot and his brain worked the boar problem on its deliberate planning track. He had two days on the countdown. He had a spear that needed reinforcement.
He had a stealth skill that was good but that he hadn't yet fully tested against the boar's sensory profile — which was considerably more sophisticated than the wolf's, and which he had zero field data on. He needed field data. This was how he had come to be the kind of person who conducted pre-dawn behavioral surveillance on forest wildlife. Nothing he had done in his previous life had specifically prepared him for this application. The methodology transferred anyway.
He positioned for the dawn session at 0545 — forty meters southwest of the creek's eastern approach, settled into the root mass of the widest rust-bark trunk he'd found in the area, which provided full body coverage and required zero movement to maintain. Root mass. Before dawn. Voluntarily. He thought about all the times he had drug himself out of bed to get to class or work on time. Apparently all he lacked was the proper motivation. Certain death is pretty motivating.
He activated Cautious Movement, adjusted his weight against the bark, and waited. 【Stealth Session — Dawn】 Cautious Movement: Active Position: 40m SW of creek, root mass concealment Objective: Boar patrol observation — timing and route mapping Wind: Favorable (NW breeze, consistent) The Watchers observe you observing the boar. They note, for their own records, that this creates a situation in which you are the subject of surveillance conducted while conducting surveillance, which they find structurally elegant.
They are watching you watch. You are watching it move. It is, as far as they can determine, not watching anything — which gives it, statistically, the least complicated morning of the three parties currently involved in this arrangement. They decline to comment on what you intend to do to the creature whose patrol route you are so carefully mapping. They will simply note that the boar has no idea you exist, that you have no idea what they are doing, and that this is probably fine for at least two of you.
The boar emerged from the southwest at 0617 by the Nexus clock, which was the first hard timestamp he'd had on its morning routine. It moved with the unhurried authority of something that had not encountered a meaningful challenge in its established territory in some time, following a line through the rust-bark trees that he now read as a worn path — the ground compression cumulative from repeated transit, the undergrowth trained away from the corridor by consistent contact. He watched it reach the creek at 0624.
Seven minutes from emergence to water. It drank at the same section of bank he'd been using on his water runs — upstream, the deeper pool where the flow slowed behind the boulder. It spent four minutes drinking, then moved east along the bank for approximately sixty meters before the first pause: a flat section of exposed root between two boulders where it stood with reduced alert posture, its head lower, the scan frequency dropping. Grazing mode.
He wrote on the bark-sheet in the smallest marks he could produce without losing legibility. Pause Point 1 — creek bank, 60m east of drinking pool, 0631–0648. The boar held the position for seventeen minutes. He used every second of that window to map the approach vectors available to him from Pause Point 1 — the western approach partially blocked by a boulder cluster, the northern fully open but fully upwind, the southwestern clear and downwind. The answer was there before he finished the question.
Southwestern approach from Pause Point 1. He marked it. The boar completed its morning circuit and returned to the southwest at 0714. Total observation: 57 minutes. He waited another full hour before moving, because patience was the tool the dawn session required — not patience as a concept, but patience as an hour of lying in a root mass while nothing happened, which was the version of it that actually counted. 【Observation Session 1 — Logged】 Boar emergence: 0617. Creek arrival: 0624. Pause Point 1: 0631–0648.
Return: 0714. Approach vector confirmed: Southwestern (downwind, partial cover) Perception +0. 1 (sustained behavioral pattern observation — extended duration) The Watchers observe your note-taking. They find the methodical quality alarming in context. He ran the circuit back to base camp, ate a full Mushroom-Root Stew, checked the traps — two catches, the mechanism running itself the way it did now, and returned for the mid-morning session at 1045. He had been doing surveillance on a boar since before sunrise.
This was his life. He had made his peace with it sometime during the root-mass hour and had not revisited the question. The boar was at the creek again. Different timing on the second visit, which told him the morning circuit wasn't the only patrol — the animal was running multiple passes, the intervals driven by something he didn't have enough data to classify yet. Water access frequency. Temperature response. Territory maintenance. He wasn't sure why and wasn't sure if he needed to know why.
He watched the mid-morning session for forty-five minutes, catching the boar at Pause Point 2: a rust-bark deadfall on the creek's southern bank where it paused in a sun patch for eleven minutes, perfectly still, red-rimmed eyes half-closed. Sun-basking behavior. He'd seen it in other animals, reptiles, cats, dogs, but hadn't expected it in a mammal the size of a small car, but the Nexus didn't offer a taxonomic explanation and he wasn't going to assume one. He filed it: observed, source: direct, confidence: high.
Pause Point 2 — south bank deadfall, approximately 80m from Pause Point 1. The sun angle at this time put the southwestern approach in shadow from the boar's perspective — a different advantage than downwind. It meant the approach corridor was visually reduced from the boar's position during the 1045–1100 window. He marked it. The third session was the afternoon slot, and the third session was when the Nexus caught up to what his sustained stealth practice had been accumulating toward.
He'd been running Cautious Movement for portions of every day for the past week. The dawn session had been an unbroken hour of it. The mid-morning session forty-five minutes. The afternoon session, which he'd approached with the specific deliberate intention of closing to fifteen meters on the boar during its Pause Point 1 behavior, was adding up to something the system had been tracking against a threshold he hadn't checked recently. You could be reading stolen content.
Head to the original site for the genuine story. He was at twelve meters, two meters closer than he'd brought himself during the wolf test, when the notification arrived. He stayed absolutely still while he read it. Twelve meters from a Level 14 Forest Boar that was in grazing-mode posture. He did not let the notification cascade distract him from the primary task, which was remaining undetected. The boar grazed. He read. 【Skill Rank-Up!
】 Basic Stealth: Novice → APPRENTICE Detection chance at deliberate pace: −22% (previously −12%) Cautious Movement detection reduction: −44% (doubled from base) New Active: Shadow Step — 2-second full concealment burst Cooldown: 90 seconds"The prey has learned to disappear."
"Unfortunate." — Watcher internal log, accessed without authorization. Again. The Watchers have stopped trying to secure their logs. The effort is no longer cost-effective.
He retreated from twelve meters in Cautious Movement at the same steady pace he'd approached — not faster, because faster was the input that triggered alert transitions in animals currently in passive posture, and he had enough fine-motor control at half-speed now to hold the deliberate rhythm across the full sixty-meter withdrawal without it costing him anything. The boar didn't look up. At seventy meters he tested Shadow Step.
The active fired in a way he hadn't anticipated, not a visual effect he could see, but a perceptual confirmation from the Nexus that his detection signature had dropped to near-zero for the duration, and a physical sensation that was closest to a held breath extended beyond the breath's natural limit. Two seconds. Clean. The boar, visible at seventy meters in the afternoon light, ran its scan at the moment he activated and the scan found nothing. He tested it three more times. Walking, standing, mid-movement.
All four produced the same result.
"Cool, Shadow Step works," he said, at the safe distance of one hundred and twenty meters from anything that might object.
"I disappeared for two seconds. The boar was fifteen meters away and didn't register the movement. I've apparently had this sitting in the skill tree for some time, conducting my approach routes in full visibility like an amateur. That's not information I'm going to spend any further time on." The dusk session completed the data set.
The boar's evening patrol was a mirror of the morning but later — emergence at 1731, the Pause Point 1 position held for twenty-three minutes rather than seventeen, the additional time suggesting the evening circuit had a different energy budget than the morning one. Pause Point 3 appeared: a section of the creek's western bank, distinct from the morning circuit's route, that the boar visited only in the evening. Twenty minutes of low-alert posture, facing east into the last light. He mapped the full circuit now.
Four observation sessions. Six hours of cumulative Cautious Movement. Complete timing data on the morning and evening circuits. Three pause points with approach vectors, sun angles, and downwind corridors annotated for each. 【Stealth Apprentice — Session Log】 Total sustained Cautious Movement: 6. 1 hours Agility: 14. 7 → 15. 0 (+0. 3 — extended precision movement at low speed) Boar patrol: Full circuit mapped (morning + evening) The Watchers note you spent a full day doing reconnaissance on a Forest Boar.
They note this is the most thorough pre-hunt analysis they have observed from a player. They update the Forest Boar's parameters. The update makes the Forest Boar more dangerous. You're welcome.
"What?! Why am I getting punished for being cautious and planning?." Finn's annoyance grew.
"I spent all day following a five-hundred-pound territorial forest pig without it knowing I existed," he said, sitting at the base of the rock face with the bark-sheet open in the last of the day's light and the full patrol map in front of him.
"I have a complete map of its daily schedule. I know where it naps. I am stalking it like a particularly well-organized vengeful data analyst. That should be rewarded, not punished." He wrote the hunt plan in full. Not the sketch he'd made on the boar plan draft — the operational version, with timing windows and approach vectors and contingency sequences. The bark-sheet's supply log section had enough margin remaining for a proper document, and this warranted a proper document.
Approach: Western vector, morning session, target window 0631–0648 (Pause Point 1). Wind: NW consistent — approach from SW maintains downwind position. Stealth: Cautious Movement from biome transition line. Shadow Step held as reserve — deploy at 10m approach or on unexpected alert-state transition. Throw: Primary at 7m, Pause Point 1 position. Southwestern approach corridor provides clean angle on right-flank target zone. Spear-tip reinforced (tomorrow).
Withdrawal: Immediate Shadow Step on throw completion, then Cautious Movement to 200m before normal movement. No line-of-sight assessment during withdrawal — move first, evaluate after. Contingency: Pause Points 2 and 3 available for secondary and tertiary throws if primary produces insufficient wound. Maintain Cautious Movement between points. Do NOT approach Pause Point 2 or 3 if boar has entered alert-state. He read it back to himself twice. The plan was good.
He'd built plans before in the forest and the word good had meant different things at different stages, and right now it meant a plan that had its assumptions identified, its failure modes considered, and its execution sequence clear enough to run under adrenaline without making a decision that hadn't already been made. It was also, by raw word count, the most detailed operational document he'd produced since the Q4 fraud case at work.
The consequence window for errors on the fraud case had been significantly more forgiving. The remaining gap was the spear tip. He'd been tracking the tip's durability — it was at 20/22 from the bad-angle impact during practice, and the bone geometry adequate for the practice target wasn't adequate for penetrating the boar's hide at the necessary depth on a single throw. The boar had significantly more dermis density than a bark target.
He needed a reinforced tip with a narrower penetration profile and denser material, which the Grade B flint he'd harvested from the rust-bark seam could provide in combination with the bone splinter's structural role. Tomorrow's crafting session. He wrote it on the list, which was where the things that were definitely going to happen went. He cooked inside, the smoke finding its vent, the shelter holding its warmth.
He hadn't been this focused on a single operational objective since a fraud pattern at work that had popped up and taken three weeks to build the case on. The feeling was similar: the accumulation of data toward a threshold, the point where the data said act now, the plan existing in enough detail that the execution was mostly just not deviating from it. He'd caught the fraud pattern. He'd been right.
His manager had received the credit, the recognition, and — he had since inferred — a quarterly bonus that didn't appear anywhere near his paycheck. Which was the kind of outcome he had accepted at the time as just the way things worked, and which, from his current vantage point, he could finally classify with the precision it deserved: not a dataset he needed to keep carrying. He had left that operating environment behind in every meaningful sense. AetherForge had seen to that, if nothing else. Silver linings.
He tried not to think about that parallel too directly. The boar had a patrol, a schedule, three pause points, and two downwind approach corridors. He had a plan, a reinforced spear tip to build tomorrow, and two Shadow Step practice sessions before the hunt window opened. He went to sleep thinking about the approach angle on Pause Point 1 and whether the southwestern corridor's partial boulder coverage was an advantage or a constraint on the follow-through trajectory. Advantage.
The boulder coverage provided concealment if the boar's alert-state transition was faster than anticipated. He closed his eyes and the plan ran itself one more time on its own, which was the sign it had been built well enough to be internalized rather than just referenced. Three days.
