"There's a brick wall painted to look like a hallway," Gregor called out.

"TEMPORARY STEP COMPRESSION MEASURE - FESTIVAL CROWD CONTROL." Bart looked at Harold while Harold just tried to look busy.

"Temporary," Gregor said.

"How long?"" 306 years." They successfully cleared eight more loops until Gregor returned from the right hand split, wiping dust from his jacket.

"Corridor 7 exists," Gregor reported. Bart frowned.

"It was marked demolished 412 years ago." Harold checked his modern facility plans.

"I can tell you what the historical record requires. I cannot redesign your municipal emergency route." Harold nodded once.

"Sure that makes sense" Gregor frowned.

"Why is that any good?"

"Because he's a librarian," Harold said, already unfolding a fresh survey parchment and withdrawing his pen, "and not a municipal engineer." Harold began a formal survey of the existing stone beneath their feet. He mapped the physical dimensions, documented the active doorways, and certified its modern emergency function. "Your Junior Helper has excellent spatial awareness." Gregor winked at Bart.

"Never in doubt."

"Nobody disputed that," Bart said.

"Lots of people have," Gregor muttered.

"Keeper Sanders," Harold said, holding out a thinner, orange bound volume.

"Our current municipal code. 619th revision." Bart looked at it.

"A donation?"

"Interinstitutional reference copy." Bart accepted it carefully, putting it just above the heavier book. Gregor looked between them.

"Are we taking two books home?"

"One recovery," Bart said.

"One acquisition." When Bart and Gregor stepped back through the Staff Restroom door, the Infinite Archive was reassuringly intact. Elian was still in midst of reading, Bernard was resting. Albert was sweeping near the mahogany desk. Bart decided this qualified as reassuringly normal. Both he and Gregor walked to Patron Services and dropped the massive architectural tome into the Intake Tray. The scales flared a brilliant, blinding blue.
