Chương 61: IN CASE I FAIL

19 HOURS BEFORE THE RUIN Albert had been dead for roughly 52 hours. He had already discovered several disadvantages to the condition. First, standard issue cotton gloves no longer fit properly, lacking skin and muscle to hold them in place. Second, Quills had a frustrating tendency to slip between his bare skeletal fingers. Third, navigating the remaining operational corridors meant encountering screaming junior staff. Alternatively, he no longer required lunch, which meant he could continue to power through.
Albert tightened his grip on his broom handle, adjusting to the terrifying lightness of his new physical structure, and surveyed the grand intersection of the North Wing. The Infinite Archive was radically different from the institution it had been two days earlier. The bustling, deafening symphony of existence was gone. The public galleries were nearly empty. The towering portal arches that had once flashed with constant traffic stood dark and dead. Entire sections of the facility had been sealed.
Magical lighting failed in irregular patches, casting long shadows across cracked floors, while emergency hazard barriers blocked half the aisles. Albert swept a pile of shattered glass from beneath a toppled desk. He was still working. A surviving senior indexer hurried past, both arms wrapped around a stack of files. She caught sight of him and froze.
"Chief Custodian?"
"Yes, Madam," Albert replied politely. She stared at his bleached ribcage.
"You're dead."
"Apparently."
"Should you be working?" Albert looked around at the failing lights, the cracked floors, and the distant, muffled sound of reality tearing itself apart somewhere beyond the East Wing. Then he looked back at her.
"Should you?" The indexer swallowed, tightened her grip on the files, and hurried away. Albert returned to sweeping.
"Your dedication to facility maintenance is very inconceivable," a dry voice echoed from the shadows. Albert turned his skull. Morzath stepped from behind a cracked marble pillar. The lich glided across the ruined floor with his dark robes flailing. He stopped in front of Albert, purple eye lights passing slowly over the custodian's reconstructed skeletal frame. A blue System panel pulsed into existence between them.
SOUL-STATE CONTINUITY: STABLE Projected degradation: NONE DETECTED"You should remain structurally functional indefinitely," Morzath declared.
"Should?" Albert asked.
"Nothing is truly indefinite." Albert tapped the wooden handle of his broom against another hovering panel. Projected operational lifespan: INDEFINITE"Your paperwork disagrees."
"Your paperwork has not met enough gods," Morzath said mildly. The lich turned toward the far end of the corridor. A violently swirling portal of dark magic remained open against the wall. Through it came the distant sounds of clashing steel, roaring fire, and thousands of people having what Albert assumed was a very unpleasant afternoon.
"My siege has been unattended for more than two days," Morzath observed.
"Is that problematic?" Morzath considered the question.
"For them." The lich gave Albert a brief, respectful nod. Then he stepped through the portal. The dark magic collapsed behind him with a sharp crack, leaving Albert alone in the corridor. His uniform lapel chimed immediately.
"Chief Custodian," Keeper #4, 091's voice crackled through the failing administrative enchantment.
"Report to the East Wing vault." The East Wing was almost unrecognizable. The grand corridor ended abruptly at a massive, newly reinforced vault door of iron. Defensive runes had been carved directly into the floor. Keeper #4, 091 stood before an intricate administrative apparatus suspended in the air. He looked completely hollowed out. His robes were ruined while his hands trembled. Dark circles had become deep bruises beneath his eyes, and he seemed to be holding himself somehow upright through willpower alone.
Nearby stood the Curator, perfectly composed with an Immaculate grey suit and pristine white gloves.
"Keeper," Albert said, coming to a halt.
"Curator."Neither man acknowledged the greeting. They were staring at a towering System interface. MASTER AUTHORITY RESTRUCTURING Existing Keeper authority: UNIFIED Proposed authority model: DISTRIBUTED The blue text shifted. The single concept of Keeper divided into five glowing words. MEMORY RECORD CITATION CLOSURE SUCCESSION Albert stared at them.
"Five Authorities," Keeper #4, 091 said, his voice ragged.
"Memory. Record. Citation. Closure. Succession."
"Why divide them, Keeper?" Albert asked.
"It leaves the Archive vulnerable." Keeper #4, 091 did not look away from the vault.
"Because no Keeper should ever be able to open that door alone." Albert looked at him.
"Including you?" The Keeper finally turned his head. His eyes were dark and haunted.
"Especially me." Albert's skeletal fingers tightened slightly around the broom.
"I don't understand, sir."
"It is a division of function," Keeper #4, 091 said. He pointed toward the glowing words.
"Memory determines what the Archive may retain and recover." His finger moved.
"Record determines what the Archive recognizes as established fact." Again.
"Citation determines which facts may safely be connected." Again.
"Closure determines what must not presently be accessed." And finally: "Succession determines who may inherit the institution." Albert considered the five Authorities.
"And opening the vault requires all five?"
"Not exactly." Albert waited.
"It requires that none of them object." The Keeper turned toward the Curator. He lifted one trembling, ink-stained hand and touched the glowing word: CLOSURE. The interface changed. EXTERNAL CLOSURE DELEGATION Custodian: EXTERNAL CLOSURE CONSULTANT Authority: CLOSURE Scope: TERMINAL HAZARD COLLECTION Operational model: EXTERNAL CUSTODY Authority token: LIMITED KEEPER KEY Mandate: PRESERVE RESTRICTIONS Review status: REQUIRED UPON INSTITUTIONAL RESTORATION Keeper #4, 091 reached into his ruined robes.
He withdrew a heavy silver key. It was intricately worked, covered in tiny administrative sigils, and radiated enough authority that even Albert could feel the Archive recognizing it. The Keeper looked at the key and then broke it. The snap rang sharply through the corridor. A thin line of blood appeared across one ink-stained palm. Keeper #4, 091 offered one broken half to the Curator. The surviving section still carried the Keeper's authorization seal.
Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation. The Curator looked at it.
"You are giving me a Keeper key."
"Part of one."
"Outside the Archive."
"Yes." The Curator closed his white gloved fingers around the damaged silver key. After a moment, he hung it beneath his collar.
"That has never been done."
"That is currently the recommendation," Keeper #4, 091 replied dryly. The Curator adjusted his grip on the clipboard.
"And if no Keeper returns?"
"Then keep it closed." The Curator nodded once. His eyes moved toward the vault.
"What about the Master Tile?" Keeper #4, 091's expression changed.
"Hidden." The Curator went perfectly still.
"You said it would be destroyed."
"I tried."
"What does remain then?" Keeper #4, 091 closed his eyes for the briefest moment.
"The part of the ending I could not erase." There was silence for a while. The Curator's fingers tightened around the edge of his clipboard.
"Is the Master Tile included in the external custody transfer?"
"No."
"Then where did you hide it?" Keeper #4, 091 looked at him.
"You don't need to know." For the first time, the Curator's expression visibly hardened.
"You are giving me Closure."
"Precisely." Keeper #4, 091 continued.
"Closure is not omniscience." The Curator's jaw tightened.
"If that Tile contains what you say it contains, its location is relevant to my mandate."
"It is relevant," the Keeper agreed.
"Then tell me."
"No." Albert watched both men. The Keeper's voice softened.
"If you know where it is, then eventually someone can learn it from you." The Curator said nothing. Keeper #4, 091 looked toward the five Authorities.
"This only works if nobody carries the entire path." Then the Curator gave one slow nod. He did not look happy about it. Albert stepped forward.
"The ending of what?" Both men turned toward him. A harsh red warning exploded into existence. RELATIONSHIP QUERY BLOCKED Albert frowned at the System message. Keeper #4, 091 gave a tired, humorless smile.
"Exactly." He gestured toward the floating administrative panels.
"The danger isn't necessarily in individual facts, Albert." The Keeper raised one finger.
"A date can be harmless, a location can be harmless, a name can be harmless, a sequence can be harmless." He turned toward the sealed vault.
"Until someone realizes why they belong together." Albert looked back at the five glowing Authorities.
"Citation."
"Citation," Keeper #4, 091 echoed. The structure made sense now. 3 MINUTES BEFORE THE RUIN The Infinite Archive was screaming. A deafening roar of tearing reality vibrated through the marble. The magical lighting had failed entirely, leaving the East Wing corridor lit only by the strobing red flashes of system alerts. A massive thud echoed through the cracked marble beneath them. The external bulkheads had slammed shut, sealing the transit corridors.
Somewhere beyond them, the Curator's broken silver key had gone silent. Keeper #4, 091 stood before the black iron vault. He had just severed the final administrative connections. The Archive was sealed. The Keeper turned slowly. He looked at Albert.
"System," the Keeper said, his voice barely audible over the roaring destruction.
"Projected cognitive continuity for Chief Custodian Albert?" INDEFINITE"Memory integrity?" STABLE"Institutional recognition?" PERMANENT Albert rested both skeletal hands on his broom.
"Is something wrong, sir?"
"No." A long pause.
"That is the problem." Albert understood. He would not merely survive the catastrophe. He would remember it. Every route. Every instruction. Every movement of personnel. Every connection. If the containment failed to account for Albert, then part of the containment had already failed.
"Then why preserve me?" Albert asked quietly. The colour drained from Keeper #4, 091's face. For a moment, there was only a profoundly exhausted man standing in the ruins of everything he had been responsible for protecting.
"Because if this place survives, Albert, someone has to remember what it was."
"You just said I cannot remember."
"Not everything." The Keeper looked around the ruined corridor.
"You need to remember the Archive." Albert waited.
"The procedures, the staff, the sections. The way this institution is meant to function. The rules we got right. The mistakes we learned from." His eyes returned to Albert.
"But not the dangerous sequence of events now unfolding around us. I need to restrict your recall."
"Of what?" Keeper #4, 091 hesitated.
"The last 72 hours." Albert looked at his body and understood immediately.
"That includes my death."
"Yes."
"Morzath."
"Yes."
"Even Mabel's reassignment and the five authorities" The Keeper paused.
"Yes."
"Everything happening now?"
"Everything." Keeper #4, 091 tapped the air. A new interface appeared. STAFF MEMORY RESTRICTION Employee: ALBERT Affected period: FINAL 72 HOURS PRECEDING RUIN Memory integrity: PRESERVED Deletion: PROHIBITED Conscious recall: RESTRICTED Restriction window: ACTIVE UNTIL RUIN EVENT Institutional anchor: RETAINED Recovery requirements: MEMORY AUTHORITY + CLOSURE CONCURRENCE Albert read every line carefully. Especially: Deletion: PROHIBITED. And then: MEMORY AUTHORITY + CLOSURE CONCURRENCE.
"I won't do it without your agreement," Keeper #4, 091 said over the noise. Albert looked at him.
"You are the Keeper."
"That was not my answer." Albert leaned slightly against his broom.
"Will I know something is missing?"
"Possibly."
"Will I know why?"
"No."
"Will I remember agreeing to this?" Keeper #4, 091 looked at the 72 hour scope.
"No." Albert considered this.
"That seems poorly designed." The Keeper almost smiled.
"I know. If I'm wrong," Keeper #4, 091 continued, "a future Keeper with Memory and Closure can reverse it." That Albert understood. Custodianship and Preservation. The Keeper wasn't destroying evidence but shelving it. Albert looked toward the iron vault.
"You're shelving my memories."
"Temporarily."
"Under restricted access."
"Yes." Albert thought.
"Then somebody should remember to review them." Keeper #4, 091 nodded.
"That's what the next Keeper is for." The System chimed. STAFF MEMORY ACCESS RESTRICTION Restricted employee: ALBERT Affected period: FINAL 72 HOURS PRECEDING RUIN Restriction authority: KEEPER #4, 091 Recovery requirement: MEMORY + CLOSURE Reason: A cursor blinked. Albert looked at it.
"You haven't entered a reason, sir." Keeper #4, 091 stared at the empty field. For a long time he did nothing. The ruined Archive screamed around them. Somewhere beyond the sealed walls, reality broke a little further. The Keeper raised one trembling, ink stained finger. He typed. Reason: IN CASE I FAIL Albert looked at the words. Keeper #4, 091 turned away from the screen. He stepped closer. For a moment, he simply looked at Albert….
the surviving fragment of an orderly, magnificent institution they had both served for centuries. Then the Keeper frowned. Albert's black bow tie was slightly crooked. Keeper #4, 091 reached up. His ink stained fingers gently straightened the tie against Albert's collarbone.
"Thank you, sir," Albert said.
"You'll complain otherwise."
"Naturally." The Keeper let his hand fall away.
"Albert."
"Yes, Keeper?" A long pause stretched between them.
"If someone comes after me," Keeper #4, 091 said softly, "don't assume they're right just because the Archive chose them." Albert tilted his skull.
"Then what should I do?" Keeper #4, 091 looked at him.
"Your job." Albert tightened his grip on the broom.
"Of course Sir." Keeper #4, 091 turned back toward the interface. He pressed his hand against the glass. EMPLOYEE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT RECORDED MEMORY RESTRICTION INITIATED The world began to disappear. It did not hurt. It was simply the quiet closing of doors inside Albert's mind. Mabel walking down polished steel rails into the brightly lit transfer corridor.. gone. Morzath kneeling beside him on cracked marble, purple eye-lights glowing.. gone. Keeper #4, 091 laughing through exhaustion about an untidy apocalypse..
gone. The broken silver Keeper key passing into the Curator's white-gloved hand.. gone. The five glowing Authorities dividing the absolute power of the Archive.. gone. FINAL 72 HOURS - CLOSED Darkness rushed in. But just before the final door sealed, Albert looked down at his chest. Keeper #4, 091's fingers had left a small dark smudge of ink on the pristine fabric of his black bow tie. The Keeper had gotten ink on his bow tie. Then there was only darkness.
