Albert opened his eyes. He was standing in the exact center of the Veyric Memory Porcelain tiles in the Restricted Section basement. Thin blue lines connected the embedded shards beneath his skeletal feet. For several seconds, no one said anything. Bart, Gregor, and Mabel simply stood outside the glowing boundary of the array, watching the Chief Custodian. Albert instinctively reached up with one bare skeletal hand. His fingers touched the pristine black knot of his bow tie. There was no ink there.
There had not been for more than six centuries.
"I remember," Albert said quietly. Bart adjusted his glasses.
"All of it?" Albert paused. He let his hand fall away from the bow tie.
"No, sir but I remember considerably more than I did five minutes ago," Albert added. Bart processed the quiet admission. Keeper #4, 091 hadn't destroyed Albert's memories. He had shelved them behind a double Authority restriction. He hadn't trusted the Curator with everything or Albert with everything. He hadn't even trusted himself with everything.
He had deliberately splintered the absolute power of the Archive into five separate, objecting Authorities, specifically so that no single person could reconstruct the dangerous sequence of events surrounding the Ruin. Nobody carried the entire path." He gave Closure to the Curator," Albert said, his glowing blue eyes fixed on the empty air as the memories settled into place.
"Keeper #4, 091 gave him the silver key. He broke it himself." Bart nodded slowly. For weeks, he had assumed the grey man guarding the iron boxes was simply an obstructionist hoarding power. But he wasn't the enemy preventing the Archive's restoration. He was exactly what Keeper #4, 091 had intended him to be. He was one of the surviving brakes.
"Then there's only one person left to review," Bart said. Gregor slung his leather satchel over his shoulder and sighed.
"Grey suit?"
"Grey suit," Bart confirmed. He looked around the quiet, cool air of the Restricted Section.
"But this time, let's invite him here." Bart raised his hand.
"System," he commanded.
"Initiate institutional review of External Closure Authority." REVIEW LOCATION: INFINITE ARCHIVE - MAIN FACILITY EXTERNAL HOLDER ATTENDANCE: REQUIRED ATTENDANCE REQUEST: PENDING Gregor watched the blinking cursor.
"Can he say no?" A moment later, the blue text flashed. ATTENDANCE REQUEST: ACCEPTED They walked back upstairs to the main indexing desk. The polished wooden floorboards creaked softly under Mabel's massive weight as she settled near the grand staircase. Bart took his place behind his desk, resting one hand beside his faded BPL mug. Albert stood perfectly straight beside him while Gregor fluttered about. Across the room, the faded sign above the plain white Staff Restroom door flickered.
INBOUND TRANSFER EXTERNAL CUSTODY AUTHORITY The brass knob turned. The door opened with a tiny click, the Archive entirely abandoning its usual gurgle in the face of the approaching authority. The Curator appeared in the doorway. Then, he stopped just for a moment. For the first time since Bart had known him, the grey suit man appeared uncertain. His pale eyes moved beyond Bart. They swept over the damaged but functioning wooden shelves. The warm, flickering glow of the reading lamps.
The polished brass railings of Reference and Cross Reference. The Restricted Section door, humming with wards. Albert, standing perfectly straight. Mabel, resting comfortably inside and Gregor, leaning against a pillar. 616 years of frozen absence compressed into several seconds. It was a ridiculous, tiny pocket of life, but it was alive. Then he stepped across the threshold. For the first time in six centuries, the Curator stood inside the Infinite Archive. His eyes immediately found Albert.
"External Closure Consultant," Albert said politely.
"Chief Custodian," the Curator replied, his voice completely level.
"You were there."
"Until I wasn't," the Curator said. Albert nodded slowly. His gaze dropped to the Curator's pristine collar, where the damaged, intricately worked silver Keeper key hung on its chain.
"Keeper #4, 091 gave you that."
"Yes." Albert's fingers tightened once around the wooden broom handle then relaxed.
"It is good to see you again," Albert said. The Curator seemed at a loss and then recovered quickly.
"Likewise, Chief Custodian." There were no accusations, sudden revelations of betrayal or ancient grievances. They were two professionals confirming what had happened the last time this institution was alive. The Curator's gaze shifted to the enormous pale Sphinx resting near the stairs.
"Senior Access Guardian," the Curator acknowledged. Mabel inclined her massive head.
"External Closure Consultant." The Curator looked toward Bart, taking in the fact that Mabel was standing freely inside the main facility.
"You reviewed her posting."
"It was overdue," Bart said.
"By centuries."
"Slightly delayed but yes." The Curator looked at the man behind the desk. Bart hadn't bypassed Keeper #4, 091's safeguards. He had just finished their overdue paperwork.
"System," Bart said quietly.
"Open Closure Authority review." The System chimed above the main desk. CLOSURE AUTHORITY REVIEW Original delegation: VERIFIED Delegating authority: KEEPER #4, 091 Operational model: EXTERNAL CUSTODY Authority token: DAMAGED / VALID Emergency mandate: VALID This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Current custodian: VERIFIED Continuing necessity: PARTIALLY VERIFIED Last complete review: 616 YEARS AGO Current review status: OVERDUE Bart looked directly at the Curator across the wooden desk. He wasn't going to defeat the grey suit man. He was going to validate him.
"Your appointment was legitimate," Bart said. The Curator said nothing.
"Your mandate was legitimate."
"Some of the things you've Closed should remain Closed," Bart stated plainly. The Curator's expression didn't change, but his eyes locked onto Bart's.
"And yet?"
"And yet," Bart said, gesturing to the System interface, "Keeper #4, 091 required review upon institutional restoration."
"The Archive is still under restoration," the Curator pointed out.
"Under a provisional Keeper."
"Correct," Bart said.
"Which is why I haven't ordered the Closed Collection opened. I'm reviewing the office that keeps it Closed."
"And if your review concludes the Ending remains dangerous?" the Curator challenged softly.
"It stays Closed."
"For how long?"
"Until the next review." The Curator's pale eyes narrowed.
"And if every review reaches the same conclusion?"
"Then it stays Closed forever," Bart said simply. He let the word hang in the air for a moment.
"But it gets reviewed forever, too." That was the distinction. Bart didn't want to open every dangerous book in existence. He just refused to accept that restrictions should be permanent and unquestionable. Accountability was the difference between a library and a tyrant's vault.
"And the Master Tile?" the Curator asked quietly. Bart didn't hesitate.
"We know it exists."
"Yes."
"We know it contains information Keeper #4, 091 believed was dangerous."
"Yes."
"We know Keeper #4, 091 refused to tell you even where he'd hidden it." The Curator's jaw tightened infinitesimally.
"Yes."
"Then its location remains Closed," Bart said. Gregor blinked.
"So we're leaving it there?"
"Under restriction," Bart said. The Curator's eyes narrowed.
"You already know where it is."
"Yes," Bart admitted.
"Then Closure has failed."
"No," Bart corrected firmly.
"A restricted location being discovered during an authorized inspection is not the same as making it public. The Tile remains physically secured in Veyr. The Archive will not circulate the location. It will not cross reference it. The relationship remains Closed."
"And access?"
"Restricted." The Curator looked at him for a long, heavy moment. Then he gave one slow nod.
"System," Bart commanded.
"Submit Closure Review Findings." CLOSURE REVIEW FINDINGS Original appointment: VALID External custody: VALID Emergency mandate: VALID Current custodian: VERIFIED Continuing hazard: VERIFIED Blanket non-reviewability: INVALID Corrective action: PERIODIC KEEPER REVIEW REQUIRED"I recognize the External Closure Consultant as the lawful holder of the Closure Authority," Bart declared.
CLOSURE AUTHORITY: VERIFIED Holder: EXTERNAL CLOSURE CONSULTANT Operational model: EXTERNAL CUSTODY Status: RECOGNIZED Above them, the massive Master Authority Network panel flared into existence. A fourth heavy, intricate seal ignited with a brilliant blue light. MASTER AUTHORITY NETWORK MEMORY - VERIFIED RECORD - VERIFIED CITATION - VERIFIED CLOSURE - VERIFIED / EXTERNAL SUCCESSION - PROVISIONAL VERIFIED: 4 / 5 Somewhere deep in the buried darkness of the East Wing, a massive THUD!
vibrated through the floorboards. The fourth lock had engaged. The Curator heard it. After 600 odd years, the Archive had formally recognized the Closure he had carried alone.
"Four," the Curator said quietly.
"Four out of five," Gregor echoed. The Curator looked back at Bart.
"You chose not to open it."
"I chose to review it," Bart corrected.
"There is a difference," the Curator acknowledged softly.
"Apparently."
"Keeper #4, 091 knew that too," the Curator added. He turned back to the System. He had one more Authority to restore. He just needed to find the right form and file the correct validation.
"System," Bart said.
"Initiate Succession authority restoration." The blue text flickered. DENIED Bart frowned. He adjusted his glasses.
"Reason?" SUCCESSION CANNOT BE RESTORED THROUGH PREDECESSOR AUTHORITY SUCCESSION CANNOT BE SELF-CERTIFIED KEEPER STATUS: PROVISIONAL Bart stared at the screen. He was completely out of ideas. He couldn't trace Succession backward, because Keeper #4, 091 had deliberately broken the chain of inheritance. He couldn't self-certify, because that violated the entire premise of the Authorities.
"System," Bart demanded.
"Define requirements for Succession Authority restoration." SUCCESSION AUTHORITY Purpose: VALIDATION OF INSTITUTIONAL STEWARDSHIP Appointment: INSUFFICIENT Administrative capability: INSUFFICIENT Authority reconstruction: INSUFFICIENT Requirement: INSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION"Recognition by whom?" Bart asked. A KEEPER MAY BE APPOINTED BY A PREDECESSOR. A KEEPER MUST BE RECOGNIZED BY THE INSTITUTION THEY KEEP. Bart looked around the Archive.
"The building?" Bart asked. INCOMPLETE INTERPRETATION"The books?" Gregor guessed. INCOMPLETE"The staff," Albert said quietly. ELIGIBLE CONSTITUENCY IDENTIFIED Bart turned around. That was the realization. The Infinite Archive wasn't just physical shelves, geographical maps, and ancient magic. It was the staff, the patrons, the procedures, the relationships, and the people who chose to participate in it. The Curator had been staring at the single Authority left on the Master Network panel.
"He couldn't give it to you," the Curator realized softly.
"Keeper #4, 091?" Bart asked.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because then it would still be his decision," the Curator said. It was the final safeguard. Keeper #4, 091 had deliberately created a system where the previous Keeper, no matter how powerful, could not unilaterally choose the next absolute authority. He could provide the tools. He could leave the manual. But Bart had to be recognized by the institution that survived him. Bart thought of the bizarre, reconstructed Archive he had somehow built.
He looked at Albert, the undead custodian who had been waiting six centuries to regain a sense of what happened and stayed loyal to the archive. He looked at Mabel, the massive Sphinx finally free to leave, who had chosen to stay. He looked at Gregor, the professional thief who had somehow become the Archive's most reliable asset. And finally, the Curator, the terrifying administrator who had stopped fighting him. SUCCESSION REVIEW AVAILABLE Eligible attestations detected.
"Attestations?" Bart asked.
"That sounds like paperwork," Gregor noted.
"It is," Bart said. Gregor brightened immediately.
"Oh, good." The blue text flared brightly across the entire ceiling of the main hall. INSTITUTIONAL RECOGNITION MAY BEGIN
