The Curator stood perfectly still before the Black Catalogue, his hands still resting lightly on the edge of the iron lectern.
"Temporary storage," the Curator repeated softly. Gregor looked from the man to the rows upon rows of boxes stretching all the way.
"How long is temporary?"
"Under ordinary circumstances?" the Curator asked.
"Yes."
"Much less than six centuries." Gregor nodded.
"Good, Just checking if i understood the word correctly" 616 years, The Archive had collapsed, The portal network had died and The last Keeper had vanished. The Curator had apparently kept on doing his job. Bart respected that kind of dedication. The Curator then broke the silence and got straight to the point.
"You have found the Closed Collection. Congratulations. Now tell me what you intend to do with it""Nothing," Bart said calmly. The Curator's pale eyes narrowed slightly.
"Nothing?"
"I didn't come here to read the books." Bart pointed at the Black Catalogue.
"I came here to inspect your paperwork." Gregor shifted uncomfortably and smirked.
"Somehow that sounded more threatening." The Curator's expression changed.
"Custodial review parameters," the Curator said, A faint grey line of light appeared in the air between Bart and the lectern, hanging like a physical boundary.
"Asset existence. Custody. Administrative status. Original appointment. Review requirements. Non-hazardous metadata." His eyes remained on Bart.
"Forbidden: titles. Content. Discovery locations. Hazardous relationships." he paused for a bit,"Ending-related records."
"Acceptable," Bart said. Gregor frowned.
"We're agreeing not to look at anything inside the box?"
"We're agreeing to look at the correct things," Bart said. Bart stepped up to the iron lectern. He placed his hands near the edges of the Black Catalogue, but he did not touch it. He invoked Record and Citation, then opened the custodial inspection authority the Curator had already acknowledged. The air above the book shimmered, and a pale blue System display materialized.
MASTER CLOSURE REGISTER Designation: BLACK CATALOGUE Institutional owner: INFINITE ARCHIVE Custodial officer: EXTERNAL CLOSURE CONSULTANT Current Closure holdings: [CLOSED] Active restrictions: [CLOSED] Original delegation record: AVAILABLE Institutional review record: AVAILABLE Bart immediately pointed to the bottom line.
"Original delegation record." The blue text shifted, displaying a document that had not been seen since the hours before the Archive fell.
ORIGINAL EMERGENCY DELEGATION Authority granted by: KEEPER #4, 091 Purpose: EMERGENCY EXTERNAL CLOSURE Scope: Remove designated hazardous holdings from ordinary catalogue discovery Maintain external custody Preserve institutional ownership Prevent uncontrolled consultation Maintain master administrative register Submit Closure status to Keeper review Bart read the glowing words carefully. He looked over at the Curator.
"So he really did give you all this?"
"Yes, of course it is my responsibility" the Curator said simply.
"You could have shown us this earlier and cleared it up" Bart noted.
"It was Closed." Bart stared at him and he didn't have a good response to that. He stepped back from the lectern, adjusting his glasses.
"Your original appointment was legitimate."
"However," Bart continued, "that does not automatically establish that your current operation remains compliant." The Gregor looked at Curator.
"There he is."
"Who?" Curator asked, a bit confused.
"The real Boss mate.. keep up will ya" said Gregor Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings. Bart ignored the commentary. He turned back to the glowing blue interface above the Black Catalogue.
"Display last institutional review." The System processed the request slowly, digging deep into the Black Catalogue's administrative metadata. LAST COMPLETE CLOSURE REVIEW Reviewing authority: KEEPER #4, 091 Status: EMERGENCY CONTINUATION APPROVED Date: 616 years ago Next review due: [Multiple intervals dependent upon hazard class] Current review status: OVERDUE 616 years overdue.
"There was no Keeper," the Curator said quietly.
"That's a reasonable explanation," Bart said. Gregor looked shocked.
"Boss, you're agreeing with him?"
"But there's someone responsible for the office now," Bart finished.
"Responsibility and authority are not identical," the Curator noted.
"Neither is 616 years and 'temporarily overdue,'" Bart replied. The Curator gestured toward the endless rows of iron boxes behind him in the dark.
"There is a military manual in aisle 78 that can resurrect every soldier who has ever died following its orders," the Curator said softly.
"There is a children's astronomy text that removed one of its planet's moons when a reader corrected a diagram and there is a 43 page pamphlet whose argument becomes more convincing every time someone disagrees with it." Gregor frowned.
"That doesn't sound so bad."
"The last known disagreement ended with twelve thousand people building a cathedral but starving," the Curator said. He looked back at Bart, his pale eyes intense.
"Which one would you like to review first?"
"I don't know," Bart admitted.
"Precisely."
"I'm not arguing that they should be opened," Bart said quietly.
"I'm arguing that nobody gets to stop asking why they're closed." The Curator stared back at him. Bart turned back to the interface.
"Display the final Closure review conducted by Keeper #4, 091." REVIEW CONTENT: Partially Closed Administrative metadata: Available Associated personnel: Available where non-hazardous Period: FINAL 72 HOURS PRECEDING RUIN Bart continued.
"Display associated emergency staff." Names appeared. Most immediately dissolved red closure bars. One remained. ASSOCIATED EMERGENCY STAFF Name: ALBERT Position: Chief Custodian Status at beginning of period: LIVING Bart's eyes stopped there as the next line appeared, Status at end of period: UNDEAD Gregor leaned closer to the blue text.
"LIV-ING?" Bart didn't have an answer. Gregor repeated.
"Albert was alive?" He then stared at the next line.
"Is undead normally a staff classification?" The Curator considered the question.
"Historically, more often than you would expect."
"System," Bart said quickly.
"What happened to him?" RELATIONSHIP CLOSED"Who authorised the Closure?" Bart demanded. KEEPER #4, 091"Of course," Bart murmured. But a second line of metadata had appeared beneath the restriction warning. Memory record deposited: YES Institutional anchor: Chief Custodian continuity record Recovery requirement: Memory + Closure concurrence Bart stared at the final line. Memory alone had never been enough. He looked from the recovery requirement to the Curator. Memory and Closure. Two signatures for one locked door.
"Two signatures?" Gregor asked.
"Yes."
"To remember something?"
"Apparently." Gregor shook his head.
"No wonder everyone forgot." Bart looked at the Curator.
"I need access to the memory record."
"No," the Curator said immediately. Gregor sighed loudly.
"Here we go again." But the Curator didn't turn away. He looked at the boxes, then back at the Black Catalogue.
"Not here," the Curator finished. A new pale blue window materialized above the ledger. MEMORY RECOVERY PROCEDURE AVAILABLE Subject: ALBERT Location required: Infinite Archive Additional anchor: Veyric Memory Porcelain Closure concurrence: REQUIRED"If I grant concurrence, the memory becomes reviewable," the Curator said. The Curator studied Bart, then he removed his right glove with deliberate care and placed his bare palm against the cold leather of the Black Catalogue.
"Closure concurrence granted." Bart studied him.
"Why now?" The Curator's expression didn't change.
"You have spent weeks obstructing me."
"Correct."
"You hid the Closure records."
"They were Closed." Bart ignored that.
"You challenged my authority at every opportunity."
"Also factually correct." Gregor glanced between them.
"This is a surprisingly healthy relationship." Bart kept his eyes on the Curator.
"So why grant concurrence?" The Curator looked past him, toward the endless iron boxes.
"Because when you entered this facility, I expected you to ask what was inside them. But you did not."
"I asked who was responsible for them."
"Exactly." The Curator's gaze returned to him.
"Most people who discover a locked door immediately ask what lies behind it. Keepers are particularly prone to the habit."
"And what should they ask?"
"Who locked it." Bart glanced at the Black Catalogue.
"Why."
"Yes."
"And when it was last reviewed." For the briefest moment, the Curator looked almost irritated again.
"You were doing well until that part." Gregor snorted on the side. Bart adjusted his glasses.
"So this is a test?"
"No."
"It does feel like one." Bart then adjusted his glasses.
"Thank you."
"Do not thank me yet," the Curator said quietly. Bart paused.
"Why?" The Curator's bare hand remained on the Black Catalogue. There was no irritation in his expression now or disdain.
"Because Keeper #4, 091 went to extraordinary lengths to ensure Albert forgot those three days."
