The blue text flared brightly across the entire ceiling of the main hall. SUCCESSION REVIEW Candidate: BARTHOLOMEW SANDERS Status: PROVISIONAL Institutional constituencies required: Staff Patrons Partner institutions Community relationships Adversarial relationships Independent oversight Recognition requires demonstrated institutional function. Bart stared up at the massive interface hovering above his reading room.
"Demonstrated how?" The System paused. THE INSTITUTION MUST BE IN USE. Instantly, the magical lights of the Archive dimmed. A warm, golden glow spread outward from the center of the Reading Room, casting soft shadows across the polished wooden floorboards. Above Bart's desk, the Quiet Clock began to tick. AFTER-HOURS READING ROOM - ACTIVE SUCCESSION ASSEMBLY MODE Bart sighed.
"This seems now a performance review." INCOMPLETE INTERPRETATION"Party?" Gregor suggested. CONSIDERABLY WORSE INTERPRETATION Bart watched as the Archive began to prepare for company. It was the building remembering what it was supposed to be. Two oak reading tables unfolded themselves from a collapsed pile of lumber in the corner. Six leather chairs dragged themselves across the floor, settling into place. Warm lamps ignited further down the aisles, illuminating shelves that had been dark for six centuries.
An old wooden coat rack materialized near the entrance. The broken secondary intake tray on Bart's desk smoothly repaired its splintered wood. The building was breathing again. Across the room, the Staff Restroom door gave a violent rattle. WHOOSH! GURGLE! Elian walked in, his arms wrapped around a towering stack of heavily warded tomes. The young Silver Spire scholar didn't seem to notice the glowing blue text on the ceiling, nor the Sphinx, or the grey suited stranger standing.
He just looked relieved to be at the Archive.
"Evening, Keeper," Elian said, heading straight for his usual table near the Cross-Reference section. Bart watched him drop the books with a heavy thud.
"Elian."
"Yes?"
"Apparently you're here to evaluate me." Elian stopped organizing his quills. He looked up at the ceiling.
"I only came to study." PATRON RELATIONSHIP VERIFIED Bart nodded." That counts, I guess..." Before Elian could ask questions, the restroom door rattled again. It swung open dramatically, revealing a swirling vortex of dark magic.
"MORTALS," a terrifying voice boomed, before the Archive's After-Hours enchantment immediately clamped down on the volume.
"... tremble before my presence," Morzath the Undying finished in a whisper. The lich stepped into the room. He stared upward at the ceiling.
"I continue to dislike this policy." He ignored Bart entirely, gliding straight toward the Culinary Research section. A moment later, Gurrum ducked his massive, heavily muscled frame through the doorway, carrying a woven basket. The enormous Golden Troll gave Bart a brief nod, walked over to Culinary Research, and looked down at a bowl resting on the table.
"Did you feed the starter?" Gurrum asked.
"Twice," Morzath said proudly.
"It is not an army."
"It appeared hungry." Gurrum sighed deeply, pinched the bridge of his nose, and took up his normal position beside the lich. Gregor casually strolled past their table, his hand drifting toward the woven basket. Gurrum slapped his hand away with a wooden spoon without even looking.
"I thought we had an understanding," Gregor complained, rubbing his knuckles.
"After we get some work done," Gurrum grunted. Albert, who had been watching the exchange from the center of the room, slowly walked over to Culinary Research. He stopped beside the table.
"Lord Morzath," Albert said. The lich didn't look up from his dough.
"Chief Custodian." Albert paused.
"I remember our first consultation now." That stopped Morzath. The lich slowly turned his skull. He looked at Albert properly, the purple fire in his eye sockets sharpening as 600 odd years of history collapsed between them.
"Ah," Morzath said quietly. Albert reached up and touched the pristine black knot of his bow tie.
"The continuity appears to have held." Morzath studied the skeletal form whose continuity he had preserved centuries ago.
"Perfectly." Albert lowered his hand.
"The bow tie survived."
"Standards matter," Morzath agreed. For another moment, the two undead men regarded one another. Then Morzath returned to kneading, and Albert picked up his broom. Above Bart, the System chimed. INSTITUTIONAL FUNCTION REVIEW Constituency: STAFF Has the candidate produced a functioning staff relationship? STAFF RELATIONSHIP EVIDENCE REQUIRED Gregor looked uncomfortable under the sudden, glowing blue attention.
"Boss gave me a job." INSUFFICIENT"Of course," Gregor muttered. He scratched his neck.
"He gave me a job when I couldn't even read what the job was." Bart opened his mouth to object, but Gregor held up a hand.
"Albert taught me the letters," Gregor said, looking up at the System.
"Boss decided I was worth teaching." He looked toward the little blue record currently pulsing above him.
"Then he made me teach somebody else." RELATIONSHIP PROPAGATION VERIFIED STAFF DEVELOPMENT CHAIN VERIFIED In the shadows near the stairs, a neglected alcove suddenly swept itself clean. A polished wooden desk appeared, along with a slate chalkboard and a small brass plaque. STAFF DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING Service status: RESTORED Gregor stared at the plaque.
"I have a department?"
"Section," Bart corrected. The System's attention shifted to Mabel.
"My emergency assignment was lawful," the massive Sphinx stated, her voice vibrating through the floorboards. She looked at Bart.
"Keeper Sanders did not order me to abandon it or invalidate it. He confirmed that it had once been valid, established that its termination condition had been satisfied earlier, and finally performed the review nobody else had been authorized to conduct." A long pause hung in the air.
"Then he asked where I wished to serve," Mabel finished quietly. PERSONNEL STEWARDSHIP VERIFIED STAFF WELFARE SAFEGUARD RESTORED Behind Bart's desk, a battered personnel filing cabinet snapped its drawers back into perfect alignment. PERSONNEL SERVICES - MINIMUM OPERATING CAPACITY Finally, the System focused on Albert. Was Bartholomew Sanders recognized because the Archive selected him?
"No," Albert answered clearly. The Reading Room went quiet.
"Keeper #4, 091 specifically instructed me not to do that," Albert explained, gripping his broom. He turned his glowing blue eyes toward Bart.
"I chose him."
"When?" Bart asked.
"I have since the moment he complained about the chair, sir." Before Bart could respond, a flurry of paper erupted from the upper galleries. The Almanac of Inevitable Doom swooped down like a predatory bird, circling Bart's head twice before hovering directly in front of the System interface. It snapped open to a blank page aggressively scribbling bright red ink across the parchment.
THE KEEPER WILL CONTINUE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT HIS BACK, HIS COFFEE, HIS BUDGET, AND THE QUALITY OF HIS OFFICE FURNITURE FOR A VERY LONG TIME. Bart stared at the hovering book.
"Thank you?" The pen stabbed the parchment again. THAT WAS NOT PRAISE. LONG-TERM INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY PROJECTION: POSITIVE The Almanac snapped shut and zoomed back into the rafters. INSTITUTIONAL CONTINUITY: VERIFIED Deep beneath the floorboards, a heartbeat activated. THUM. The Archive's internal staff network that was dormant since the Ruin came back online, humming warmly in the walls. Does the candidate maintain patron relationships independent of institutional coercion?
Elian looked up from his heavily warded tome.
"He didn't give me the answer." Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on the original website.
"He made me prove it," Elian clarified, tapping his quill against the page. Gurrum looked up from his dough. He pointed a massive, flour-dusted finger at Bart.
"He borrowed my book. He did not claim ownership." Morzath wiped flour from his skeletal hands. He turned to face the glowing ceiling.
"He denied me access."
"This continues to sound terrible," Bart sighed.
"Correctly," Morzath whispered dramatically.
"I am Morzath the Undying. I have destroyed kingdoms and ended three heroic bloodlines. And this... librarian... served me, acquired what he could, restricted what he must, and treated my catastrophe-class status as entirely irrelevant to his institutional rules. No empire has ever treated me so disrespectfully."
"Thank you," Bart said.
"It was a compliment," Morzath assured him. The blue text overhead flared brightly as the Archive processed the combined patron testimony. PATRON SERVICES CLUSTER VERIFIED REFERENCE SERVICES - VERIFIED EXTERNAL HOLDINGS TRUST - VERIFIED PATRON EQUITY - VERIFIED The Archive transformed around them. Six more polished wooden reading desks repaired themselves, snapping into perfect rows. A curved mahogany counter materialized near the entrance, complete with a small brass bell.
On Bart's desk, the Interlibrary Loan interface expanded. INTERLIBRARY NETWORK Registered external lending partners: 1 Concurrent external holdings capacity: 1 → 3 The System paused its interrogations. Elian leaned over to ask Gurrum a question about magical fermentation. Gurrum criticized Morzath's kneading technique. Gregor successfully read the label on a jar of preserves. Mabel quietly patrolled the perimeter. Albert swept the floor around them.
The Curator stood near the Restricted Section door, perfectly still, watching the chaotic, quiet little community exist. Bart realized he wasn't producing evidence for a tribunal. The room was producing it around him. The Staff Restroom door exploded open.
"KEEPER!" Everyone turned. King Aurelius IV stormed into the Archive, wearing a velvet cape and an expression of absolute fury. Thaddeus walked in behind him, carrying a neat stack of paperwork. Aurelius didn't bother with introductions. He glared at Bart.
"Oh, good," Gregor said.
"The goose man."
"I AM A KING," Aurelius bellowed. Gurrum looked up from his pastry. Morzath paused his kneading. Elian closed his book. Aurelius's gaze passed over Albert whom he had long ago decided was beneath royal concern then stopped on Mabel, Gurrum and rest of the gang. He looked back at Bart.
"Why is your library like this?"
"We're busy," Bart said.
"He ignored royal authority!" Aurelius shouted at the ceiling, apparently deciding to just yell his grievances at the building itself. INDEPENDENCE VERIFIED"He questioned Tremendian history!" RECORD ACCOUNTABILITY VERIFIED"He permanently connected my name to a goose!" VERIFIED RELATIONSHIP PRESERVED UNDER REPUTATIONAL PRESSURE"STOP AGREEING WITH ME!" Aurelius demanded. ADVERSARIAL RELATIONSHIP FUNCTION VERIFIED Across the main hall, a shuttered wooden booth snapped open.
A fresh coat of varnish swept across the wood, and a polished brass sign unfolded above the window. COMPLAINTS & APPEALS Aurelius stared at it. A small, crisp paper ticket popped out of a dispenser on the counter. NOW SERVING: 001 KING AURELIUS IV Thaddeus stepped up to Bart's desk, ignoring his monarch's outrage.
"He believed me," the scholar said quietly to the ceiling.
"No," Bart corrected immediately. Thaddeus smiled.
"Exactly." Bart hadn't just believed him. He had verified the truth, and then, rather than taking permanent control of Tremendian history, he had empowered Thaddeus to manage it. The Staff Restroom door rattled violently again. WHOOSH! GURGLE! Nobb and Hedd tumbled through together, landing in a heap of green limbs and wet dirt on the polished floor. They stared upward at the glowing ceiling in absolute awe. Albert immediately stopped sweeping. He stared at the muddy footprints trailing across his pristine floor.
Nobb, Hedd noticed the skeleton while he stared back. Neither appeared pleased by the other.
"WOOD PRIEST!" Nobb suddenly yelled, spotting Bart. Bart closed his eyes.
"Hello, Nobb." Hedd pointed excitedly at Gregor.
"TWO PIG MAN!"
"Three," Gregor corrected automatically. Nobb reached into his ragged tunic and proudly produced a crumpled piece of parchment. He held it up for the room to see. It contained jagged, mostly legible charcoal letters. NOBB HEDD NO EAT LEGS Gregor crouched beside the goblins and squinted at the parchment.
"Your E is backwards." Nobb looked confused.
"Still?"
"Still," Gregor said, holding out a hand.
"Here." Before the System could fully process the literacy effort, the small liaison tray on Bart's desk chimed sharply. A piece of white Veyric porcelain rose from the tray, unfolding into a smooth ceramic screen. Mera Pell's face appeared. She adjusted her severe spectacles and looked at Bart.
"Keeper Sanders."
"Custodian Pell," Bart replied.
"I find Keeper Sanders administratively exhausting." PREFERENCE IRRELEVANT"Good," Mera sniffed.
"However, he recognized valid restrictions. He challenged invalid processes through proper legal channels. He accepted a limited inspection. He did not attempt to claim the Master Tile, and he did not break what he could not safely destroy." Then Mera's eyes shifted. She noticed the immaculate man in the grey suit standing nearby. Mera had never met the Curator face-to-face. She only knew him as the anonymous, infuriating operator of a damaged Keeper key.
"Is that the operator of the damaged Keeper key?" Mera asked sharply. The Curator closed his eyes.
"Yes," Bart said. Mera immediately reached for a thick stack of forms off screen.
"Excellent. There are 37 mandatory identity fields outstanding on your file."
"This matter is closed," the Curator said, his voice flat.
"That is not a recognized response category," Mera snapped back. Bart smiled. He had accidentally reunited the multiverse's two most stubborn bureaucrats. DING! Another panel lit up on Bart's desk. MONASTERY OF THE SEVEN OVENS - UNSOLICITED INSTITUTIONAL COMMENT Keeper Sanders demonstrated courage, administrative persistence, and an unacceptable willingness to improvise with sacred pastry. - Abbot Halvorn The Saltfold is doing very well. - Brother Odo DELETE THE SECOND LINE.
- Abbot Halvorn Immediately afterward, three adjacent panels flared to life next to Halvorn's message. Professor Hester, Conrad, and Maud of Greenhollow University appeared simultaneously.
"Keeper Sanders was correct," they said in unison. The three academics stared at one another. Then, they immediately began screaming over each other about exactly why Bart was correct, citing conflicting paradigms. The System mercifully terminated the connection before they could restart a another academic war. EXTERNAL INSTITUTIONAL NETWORK VERIFIED The Archive cascaded with upgrades. A tiny, brightly colored bookshelf materialized near the front desk, filled with beginner reading primers.
The small wooden tray on Bart's desk stretched upward, transforming into a massive wall of intricately carved pigeonholes. Hundreds of empty, glass fronted shelves materialized out of the dust along the far wall. BASIC LITERACY & OUTREACH - RESTORED EXTERNAL LIAISON NETWORK - RESTORED POLICY & STANDARDS REPOSITORY - RESTORED MULTI-INSTITUTION PROVENANCE SEARCH: ENABLED Bart looked up. The blue text on the ceiling shifted, tallying the results of the strangest gathering the Archive had ever hosted.
INSTITUTIONAL FUNCTIONALITY Staff - VERIFIED Patron service - VERIFIED Community access - VERIFIED External partnership - VERIFIED Adversarial accountability - VERIFIED Independent oversight — PENDING All turned to look at the Curator. The grey man stood near the Restricted Section. He had come to inspect Bartholomew Sanders, but instead, he had watched what Bart had built. It wasn't just shelves and rules. It was people. Morzath and Gurrum arguing over yeast. Elian reading.
Gregor showing Nobb how to properly draw the letter 'E'. Mabel guarding the door. Thaddeus working at the liaison desk. Aurelius filling out complaint forms. Mera aggressively trying to force the him to complete Form 41-B. It was ridiculous, chaotic. But it was alive. CAN THIS INSTITUTION DISAGREE WITH ITS KEEPER?
"Yes," Bart said. SELF-ATTESTATION INSUFFICIENT The Curator stepped forward. He didn't offer a speech about Bart's character or his magical prowess.
"He argued with me," the Curator said, his voice carrying perfectly.
"Repeatedly. He challenged my mandate. He reconstructed every procedural route I attempted to close."
"This seems to be going well," Bart murmured.
"And when he discovered my authority was legitimate," the Curator continued, his pale eyes locked on Bart, "he preserved it. When my objection was justified, he accepted it. When my office required a review, he reviewed it." The Curator stopped in front of Bart's desk.
"He understands that access and restraint are not opposites," the Curator said softly.
"I recognize Bartholomew Sanders as Keeper #4, 092." INDEPENDENT REVIEW & OVERSIGHT External Closure Authority: REGISTERED Mandatory Keeper Review: ACTIVE Closure review schedule: RESTORED Institutional objection procedure: RESTORED For the first time in six centuries, the Archive once again possessed a functioning mechanism capable of saying no to its Keeper. SUCCESSION - VERIFIED The room exploded with light once again, lines began appearing in the air. But they didn't connect books.
They connected the people in the room. A line snapped from Bart to Gregor. From Gregor to Nobb and Hedd. From Bart to Albert. From Bart to Mabel. From Bart to Elian, stretching outward toward the Silver Spire. From Bart to Thaddeus, and through him to Tremendia. Another line connected Bart directly to Aurelius. Aurelius stared at the glowing blue tether linking him to the librarian in absolute horror.
"REMOVE THAT." RELATIONSHIP VERIFIED"KEEPER!" Aurelius yelled. Another line stretched from Bart toward Greenhollow, immediately splitting into three branches. From Bart to Gurrum. From Bart to Morzath. From Gurrum to Morzath. From Bart to Mera. From Mera directly to the Curator. From Bart to the Curator. From Albert to Mabel. From Albert to the Curator. It wasn't a magical web of friendship. It was a verified institutional relationship network. It was what Bart had been rebuilding all along.
INSTITUTIONAL NETWORK: FUNCTIONING High above them, on the Master Authority Network panel, the fifth and final seal slammed into place with a concussive THUD. MASTER AUTHORITY NETWORK MEMORY - VERIFIED RECORD - VERIFIED CITATION - VERIFIED CLOSURE - VERIFIED / EXTERNAL SUCCESSION -VERIFIED 5 / 5 BARTHOLOMEW SANDERS KEEPER #4, 092 STATUS: FULLY RECOGNIZED The blue text vanished, replaced by a massive, overarching system diagnostic. ARCHIVE HEALTH: 0. 0001% → 0.
001% Current Rank: F - BARELY OPERATIONAL Gregor stared at the ceiling.
"We're still barely operational?"
"Ten times more operational," Bart corrected happily. The blue light faded entirely, leaving the Reading Room bathed in the warm, golden glow of the After Hours lamps. But nobody left. Elian went back to his reading. Gurrum began cutting pastries. Morzath continued to knead another batch of dough. Mera and the Curator continued their vicious argument over identity fields through the ceramic panel. Aurelius angrily filled out Complaint Form 3 of 19. Thaddeus eagerly explored the new liaison drawers.
Gregor knelt down beside Nobb again, patiently tracing the shape of the letter 'E'. Mabel watched the door. Albert swept around all of them. Bart sat behind his wooden desk. He picked up his faded BPL mug and took a sip. His coffee was completely cold. 616 years ago, the Infinite Archive had lost almost everything. Bart looked around the crowded Reading Room. A lich was arguing with a baker. Two goblins were writing on the furniture. A king was threatening the complaints desk.
And somewhere behind him, the Chief Custodian was already sweeping up mud. It was absolutely terrible library behavior. Bart smiled, holding his cold coffee. It was also, unmistakably, a library again.
